Inside this issue: What a great month May was here at Quaker
Road School! On the sports front, our Junior Bas-
ketball teams pulled together in very tight time-
lines to participate in the Region 2 basketball
tournament. Both girls and boys teams com-
peted well against some formidable opponents
and did an outstanding job representing Quaker
Road School. Success is measured in many
ways, and the spirit, leadership and pride that
our students showed was more inspiring than
any championship would bring. Well done
teams and coaches, Mr. Hannahson and Mr
King! Mr Bootsma and Ms Bezotosny spent much
of April and May working with our Intermediate
students who participated in Flag Rugby. As
one of the few schools in our Region to have a
team, our Comets found themselves ―on the
road‖ often to face their competition. They
showed remarkable improvements with all of
their hard work and perseverance and made
Quaker Road proud with how they competed
and conducted themselves. Again—great
sportsmanship and leadership by all. In Track
and Field action, our Grade 3 –8 students were
great participants at our School meet held at
Centennial. They showed incredible athleti-
cism, and did a great job representing Quaker
Road school in the community. It was fantastic
having so many parents out to support our stu-
dents, and to help out with some of the events.
From this event, we had 62 students move on
to represent Quaker at the Regional meet held
in Ridgeway on May16th. Once again, our
students did a great job, with many advancing
on the DSBN meet which will be held in
St.Catharines on Monday, June 10th. Thanks
to all volunteers, and especially to Mrs De-
gasperis, Ms Fulford and Ms Sims for coordi-
nating/organizing the events.
As we are now into June, we have a very busy
month to end our school year as you will see
in the calendar section of the newsletter. Our
Grade 3 & 6 students are focused on complet-
ing the EQAO testing that will showcase their
academic strengths. We have many end-of-
year trips and experiences planned for stu-
dents in all grades and of course our Grade 8
Graduation is just around the corner, marking
a turning point for some of our students as
they transition from elementary school to sec-
ondary school. The School Advisory Council
and Fun Fair committee have been very busy
planning events for our Family Fun Fair event
on Thursday, June 13th from 5-8 pm.
Staff and Students are looking forward to a
great night of fun and excitement with our
school community. We look forward to a
great end to another school year!

Achievement & More
(S.L.A.M.)
S.L.A.M. is a full-day literacy pro-
gram for children ages 6-12 with
learning disabilities/ADHD (diagnosis not
required) to keep them on their toes dur-
ing the summer months. For the first
half of the day children will be involved
in hands-on, engaging literacy activities,
for the other half of the day working on
social skills through recreational ac-
tivites. Children will work and play in a
friendly, supportive environment with
low adult-child ratios. Children will also
have the opportunity to work one-on-one

Nolan Gough, Rachel Moore, Alex Barnes
and Anthony Perna, Intermediate students at
Quaker Road, have been chosen to represent
our school on June 3rd at the Welland Sus-
tainability Conference. Each year the Wel-
land Conservation program invites students
from across the board to be part of the Wel-
land Youth Sustainability Conference. The
conference is a full day of education, aware-
ness and fun for grade 7 & 8 elementary
school students across the city of Welland.
The day will involve learning activities,
guest speakers, presentations, discussion
groups and competitions that all have the
goal of teaching our leaders of tomorrow
about the importance of environmental sus-
tainability and how they can participate at a
local level. They also will incorporate tech-
nology into their teachings and build on the
students’ prior knowledge of conservation.
Our students will be discussing global and
local topics regarding energy, water and ag-
riculture. We can’t wait to hear what our stu-
dents have learned and hopefully apply some
of what they have learned at the school.
Quaker Road school is contributing to the fight
against cancer and held a Canadian Cancer Soci-
ety Relay For Life event on Friday May 31st.
This event was a wonderful celebration of sur-
vival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a
day of fun, friendship and fundraising— all of it
focused on the fight to beat cancer. Students
were involved in a activities and games to help
them learn more about cancer prevention and
the benefits of leading healthy lifestyles.
Quaker was thrilled to raise almost $2 000.
Students and staff brought in pictures of
friends and family that have been touched by
cancer. Thank you to all the survivors who
were able to participate in our opening ceremony
or in our survivors lap and to those who sup-
ported our fund-raising efforts.
Let’s see your licence Mister!! The Grade
one’s clearly enjoyed their visit to the Safety
Village on May 23rd.

Page 5 Technology Corner Wanted : Pelham Artists aged 8—18
Pelham Summerfest is again holding a Pel-
ham Night of the Arts, Friday, July 19th, from
4:00 to 10:00pm. There are many great activi-
ties planned, but we need your help to make
it a fabulous event. We invite Pelham youth,
aged 8 to 18 years of age, who are visual art-
ist to look through their portfolios and submit
a drawing, painting, photo, print, sculpture or
assemblage to display on Friday, July 19th.
We really want to show that the youth of Pel-
ham are truly talented.
Also included in the evening’s festivities are
performance arts which include music,
dance, drama and other. This is for all ages,
so please spread the word and get involved.
Deadline for submissions to Jessica Ruddell
at Pelham Town Hall is June 28th. For more
information call Jessica at 905-892-2607

Our Intermediate students have been us-
ing technology in some innovative ways to
share their ideas and learning. The tech-
nology known as “Extreme Collaboration”
brings student collaboration from mobile
devices to the SMART Board so students
can text ideas to a single SMART Note-
book page using an iPad, iPod or Laptop.
In fact they can use any device with a
web enabled browser. This technology has
obvious uses for class brainstorming—
collecting a multitude of ideas from the
class (even from those who feel a little
timid offering ideas in the whole class en-
vironment), can be used to poll opinions,
question and answer. Students are really
engaged by the “Bring your own device”
classroom as they have an opportunity to
use the technology from their connected
lives outside the classroom for meaningful
learning opportunities.
When chatting with some of the student’s
about this learning platform Chris noted,
“what was really amazing about this ap-
proach was that everyone in the class
could talk, even those who are usually
scared to talk openly.” Mansi added that,
“I think using extreme collaboration was
great because kids in my generation like to
use their technology inside the class as
well as outside the classroom”. Ryan felt
that, “it made the class more interesting,
unique and fun. It allowed me to express
my feelings in different ways”.
Kaitlyn Kettle, gr. 7 student at Quaker attended a
special DSBN Technology Camp for Girls on May 4
& 5th at the Scotia Bank Convention Centre.
Congratulations to the
Quaker Road Rugby
team for your excellent
sportsmanship and team
play. On Thursday, May
23rd the team faced off
against some very tough
competition and qualified for the knock-out
stage of the DSBN tournament. While there day
ended sooner than it should have, the team
stayed positive and fair-minded. Thanks Comets,
you did our school proud!!
