Lieutenant Governor’s Letter

2

Hey Division 39S, I hope everyone is having a relaxing summer now, especially after AP testing and finals! This year was definitely a tiring, busy year for me. I’m definitely ready for a break. However, remember that even though it is summer vacation, Key Club doesn’t stop! Start planning some service projects for the summer to stay active, and to spice things up a bit, have a social! Please feel free to invite me to any of your service projects, general/board meetings, and socials! I would love to come visit you guys to see what great things you’re doing. Also, try to invite other clubs as well; you can earn extra interclub points and get to know other key club-bers around your community. Please feel free to utilize the divisional Facebook group page to share your events! It’s a quick, easy way to invite and inform everyone in our division. A great way to boast up your club is to participate in the Governor’s Project this year. I highly encourage all clubs in our division to participate in service projects relating to children, such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Be sure to document all sources of proof, such as receipts, sign-in sheets, and pictures. Also, never forget to submit your monthly report to our new District Secretary, Kevin Duong. He is always waiting for and expecting your report! They’re due by the 5th of each month. Be sure to submit it on time, decorate the envelope, and complete the Task-O-The-Month for extra points! I have great aspirations for this division, so please turn in your re-ports! I cannot stress how important this is, especially since it helps me know how you’re do-ing so I may serve you better. Also, don’t forget to update your club information on the Texas -Oklahoma Key Club website! The past two months as serving as your Lt. Governor have been amazing! I’m so happy that I’ve gotten to meet with most of you guys, and I honestly can say everyone is utterly amaz-ing. I’m very excited to see you guys plan service projects and meetings for the summer. Our division looks like it will be a strong one! Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions; you won’t be bothering me, for it is my job to help you. This month, I will not be able to use my cell phone. The easiest way to contact me will be by email, Skype/ooVoo, or Facebook. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I will definitely get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for being such a great division to work with. Have a great summer, be safe, and stay active! Yours in service,

Christina Koo

Divisional Project

Basic Information

This year, the Division 39 South project will revolve around hunger. The title speaks for itself: hunger is unacceptable. Pretty much everyone experienced this overwhelming, consuming sensation called hunger, and it honestly is a very terrible, dark, driving force. Yet, our bountiful world has so much food to offer. Shouldn’t we share this with others? Thus, our project this year will encompass combating hunger to provide the basic necessities of life.

Goal

Each club should endeavor to participate in at least 2 different food related service projects. This service projects can include holding a canned food drive, volunteering at your local food pantry, participating in Feed the Kids, feeding the homeless, or donating/raising money for your local food banks.

Criteria

Keep all records of your service project, such as, sign-in sheets, receipts, statements, checks, and pic-tures. Then, scan those items and email them to me as proof that your club participated. Also, recurring projects, such as volunteering weekly at a food pantry, only counts as one project. Remember, the more you participate in this project, the more hunger we can fight. Money is tight these days, so your club does not need to feel obligated to donate money.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

7

Note: There is no longer Weekend of a Lifetime! Instead, try to attend Key Leader this summer. If you don’t have enough money, try to talk to your sponsoring Kiwanis club to see how they can help.

On May 30th, our division met at Stovall Park to have our very first PCM of the year. Overall, it was very suc-cessful, with Key Club trivia, my divisional project, dis-trict news, and a mini officer training. Afterwards, we

enjoyed our social with snacks, such as chips and orange juice, and a game of volleyball. Thank you everyone who attended; you guys saved me from a sea of awkwardness.

What Our Division is Doing

Officer Inductions “The Key Club Induction went very well. It was very nice for everyone to be recognized in their old and new positions for the new Key Club year. It was also fun to meet other officers from the other clubs in our division too! I’m so excited to be a newly-elected officer and can’t wait for the new Key Club year to kick off!”

-Elizabeth Hang, Spirit Chair Mansfield Summit High School

“This year's keyclub induction was pretty neat. We all came in wearing professional clothing and sat in rows like a courthouse! I tend to think these kinds of things are exciting! It was also really cool because we got to see people from other schools get inducted as well, like Mansfield, timber view, legacy, frontier, bowie, sequin, and Venus high school. I have to say though, our club was totally representing. Our club had the most members become inducted that day~ we all saw Us-man Hyder, our new president, got to sit at the front desks in the very front of the "court" room. And one by one, each newly inducted officer got to stand up and walk to the front to be appoint-ed. Christina Koo, our lieutenant governor was pretty much in charge of the induction. I'm so proud of her!! I have high hopes for our club next year! We're going to be awesome!!”

Legacy Waterballoon Fight After school hours one side of Mansfield Legacy High Schools parking lot had been deserted for one reason; to be set up as a war zone. In a structure of every man for himself, Legacy’s Key Club hosted a water balloon fight in order to collect donated books for Feed the Kids. Mansfield Lega-cy’s 2012-2013 Key Club President, Cynthia Garza, invited all of Division 39 South to participate in a fun event while collaborating with the charity organization Feed the Kids, a program that provides food for children during the summer whose families qualify for free or reduce lunches during the school year. The fight involved extensive running, throwing, chasing, splashing, and of course laughter accom-panying with a few playful taunts for a period of 45 minutes where no one ended up dry. The few requirements asked in order to attend were to bring a gently used children’s book, no see-through attire, and no bikini bottoms or tops in order for everyone to follow dress code standards. The event was a success! Everyone had fun and a good work-out, Summit’s Key Club president, Us-man Hyder, described it as a “fun” and “memorable” event that “we felt like we got closer to Lega-cy” at the end. The books were dropped off at the First Baptist Church where the food and books are distributed. Fortunatelyfor everyone this will not be the last water balloon fight for Mansfield Legacy High School’s Key Clubas they host one every year near the summer time and according to their president, there’s serious consideration of not only hosting one but two water balloon fights in both the beginning and the end of the school year. This is the true experiences that Key club is great for, not only to do acts of kindness and to help as much as possible but to do it in a fun and playful way that brings everyone together in order to be united in one purpose; to serve.

“Summit High Schools Key Club volunteered at the First Methodist Church to unload the books for the Feed the Kids program. members who volunteered were so ecstatic to volunteer! It only took two hours for everybody to unload everything, reload, sorting into categories, and putting them back on the trucks for shipment. One of the members says "The event was great, knowing that those books are going to a great cause made my time all worthwhile."

-Usman Hyder, President Mansfield Summit High School

“Relay for Life has really made a difference in my life and changed my perspective on things. See-ing all those people there to help the cancer foundation really touched my heart. I was also really proud of all the people in our club that came out as well to support cancer patients! The event was fun and I'll never forget it. Watching the cancer survivors walk out into the gym and walk around in a circle almost made me tear up!! In moments, everyone there, including the children, stood up and cheered for them with open hearts. We clapped and hollered and made them smile and grin. I had so much fun this year. I'm looking forward to next year's Relay for Life!”

-Grace Liu, Editor Mansfield Summit High School

Relay for Life

“This month our key club tried something new to recruit future members. Our wonderful spirit chair, Elizabeth Hang, took this chance to call T.A Howard (district middle school), to ask for time to call out to their students during lunch time. To me, this was a great opportunity to recruit possible members for our key club next year. About 10 of us drove to T.A Howard during our own lunch time and waited on stage for the students to walk in the lunch room. Soon, the cafete-ria was filled and some of the students gave us questioning looks like "who are they" or "what do they do?". After a few minutes, some of us walked down the stage to talk to the students sitting at the tables and give out flyers and little cards about key club. The rest of our club sat on stage to talk about keyclub to the curious ones that walked up. It was a bit funny how some students asked if key club made keys. In groups, we all talked about what we did and how we benefitted the community. We also talked about D-CON and what you got to learn and do. I feel that our trip to T.A Howard will gain us some new members next year!”
