A message from the president Thank You, NEACUHO!

Paula “Raz” Randazza, Rivier College

The NEACUHO organization celebrates a successful year filled with shared professional development experiences for all levels of our membership – new, mid, and CHO as well as our paraprofessionals who are considering a career in our field. I look forward to presenting our collective accomplishments at the business meeting and celebrating with members who will be at the closing banquet.

For this last Navigator issue, I would like highlight some special achievements and thank those who have helped to make this year a great one! The 2011-12 Executive Board has been a supportive and dedicated group of professionals who have worked throughout the year to bring events and offerings in each of our six districts, appealing to varied levels of housing and residential life experience – I thank them all for their work! Gary Bice, Jr. the chair of our Strategic Planning Steering Committee led the Work Group Chairs – Cindy Long Porter, Josh Hettrick, Derek Zuckerman, Donna Rogalski, and Trixy Gardner – who in turn led our 40 volunteers through the strategic planning process, the end results of which will be available on the web site next month. I thank them all for that major accomplishment! The 75 members who have served on NEACUHO committees this year have helped the organization move forward by volunteering their time and offering their creative energy to our committee chairs; the

finance committee helped guide our budget process and recommended policies by which we govern our expenditures. In addition, Carol Sacchetti and Beth Moriarty created a “how to host” manual, that will secure NEACUHO traditions for years to come – all of these volunteers are to be commended for their efforts. At the conference, you will be able to pick out this dedicated bunch by the NEACUHO “N” pin displayed on their name tag – it is a visual sign of thanks and recognition for their dedication to the organization. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all of you who hosted NEACUHO on your campuses this year. I appreciate what you have done to provide us with physical resources to hold our events. To those of you who presented at our one-day events or those who will be presenting at the Annual – thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! Without you, we could not bring our members together in such a meaningful way. The past presidents of NEACUHO have been involved in great numbers this year; some of my fondest memories will be the connections I have made with members of this group – thank you for your continued dedication to the organization. Finally, a big THANK YOU to all of you, the NEACUHO membership, for giving me the opportunity to serve as President. It has been an honor and a privilege to share, celebrate, and learn with you during my most rewarding professional development opportunity. All the Best!

“Without you, we could not bring our members together in

such a meaningful way.”

District & Committee Updates

Hello Eastern New York and Vermont! I hope your summers are starting off well and you’re taking the deserved vacation time we have all earned this year. I’d like to thank everyone once again for a great year in E-NY & VT! We had a lot of great opportunities to bond, share, and learn. Below are some of the programs we were able to put on in our region this past year: · District Social @ Applebee’s in Latham, NY (8-10-11) · District Round Table Discussion @ The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY (12-9-11) · Hosted an RD2B Conference @ Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY (2-18-12) · Hosted New Professionals Conference & Mid-Level Institute @ SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill, NY (3-16-12) · District Round Table Discussion @ Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY (4-13-12) I look forward to the 2012-13 year and the many great things our new District Coordinator, Christina Lowery will put on for us! To contact Joe, please email him at [email protected].

The New Professional Development Committee has had a great year! We have had three successful conferences; RD2B at Rhode Island College, RD2B at Skidmore College and the New Professionals Conference at SUNY Cobleskill. I would like to, again, thank our host institutions for all of their efforts, and being such wonderful hosts to NEACUHO. We have also been able to bring you, the membership, articles related to New Professionals in each of this year’s Navigator publications. We are also very excited for the offerings we will have for New Professionals at this year’s Annual Conference! We will have our New Professional’s Orientation session again this year and will be starting a new initiative at this year’s orientation, a Scavenger Hunt. We really hope to see all of the New Professionals at the Annual participate in this new activity – as it promises to be a fun way to network, and learn some things too; and of course there is a great prize for the winning group! Lastly, our committee has been able to work with the Programming Committee to bring our New Professionals a track of programs specifically designed for them at the Annual Conference. We have had a wonderful year as a committee, and I would like to thank each of the members of the New Professional Development Committee for all of their hard work and dedication to both the committee and NEACUHO. To contact Casey, please email her at [email protected].

The New Professionals Case Study Competition occurs every year and is a regular tradition of fun-spirited competition and learning. Teams of 3-4 new professionals (from different institutions) are created at the beginning of the Annual Conference opening night (on Wednesday). Teams then have until Friday morning to develop a short presentation that addresses the questions presented in the case study scenario. On Friday, each team is scheduled to present in the morning to a small panel of judges. Here are a few frequently asked questions (with answers) as you prepare your journey participating in the Case Study Competition here at the Annual Conference this year at Northeastern University. Q: Wow Dave this sounds awesome, how do I sign up to join the competition? A: Simply email me with your name and institution or attend the Case Study required orientation on Wednesday night of the conference. Q: I heard there were going to be awesome program sessions this year. How do I participate in the Case Study Competition on Friday and present with my team, yet also attend program sessions? A: During your Friday presentation you would miss one of the two program sessions. However, with seven program sessions offered this year throughout the conference there is still an amazing opportunity to learn new ideas to bring back to your campus. You also learn and develop by working through the Case Study Competition. The Program Committee will even work around your schedule if you are presenting a session on Friday morning yet you would also like to compete in the Case Study Competition. Q: Ok, this sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost to participate? A: There is no additional cost to join the case study! You are already a the conference, you might as well participate. Q: I heard there are cool prizes for the winners, is there any truth to that rumor? A: Yes! The winning participants get a nice award medal to wear around on their home campus (very fashionable) and also receive a monetary award of $100.00. What a great way to begin the summer, right? Take a moment, think about it and then decide to participate in the Case Study Competition. It will be a great decision and further enhance your experience at the NEACUHO Annual Conference. I would like to thank the Program Committee for a wonderful year, and best of luck to all competing! To contact Dave, please email him at [email protected].

We would like to thank all Executive Board members for all of their contributions and updates

this year!

NEACUHO Steps Up to Honor Colleague!

The awesome NEACUHO membership has once again demonstrated its commitment to recognition. A long -time colleague and friend from the Mac Gray Co, BOB LOONEY, passed away in September, 2011. To honor his contributions to NEACUHO and the student housing profession, a trio of friends championed Bob as we sought a posthumous induction into the ACUHO-I Parthenon Society which requires a financial commitment of $2,500. We are thrilled to announce that target has been achieved and Bob will be posthumously inducted at the ACUHO-I Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA July 7-9, 2012. Without the commitment and assistance from the NEACUHO membership and other friends/colleagues, this incredible honor for Bob would not have been possible. Thanks for your generosity and allegiance to one of our own!
