WIR season opener at Banks Lake June 9-10
Too many issues of Marlee Hill’s Shear Pin have been published without some
out-of-Region 12 news. Today I will bring the readers up-to-date on the
happenings here in Washington State. The Seattle Outboard Association’s
membership has done due diligence preparing for the season that already has
one successful race under its belt. The Whidbey Island Roostertails are preparing
for their season opener at Banks Lake, in eastern Washington. CORA and the
Newberg Boat Club are gearing up for the 652nd Annual Newberg Boat Race on
the Willamette River. On top of all that, the greater Seattle area has seen a
mere handful of rainy days, only to be replaced by the gorgeous seventy-
degree-plus weather day in and day out.
The Seattle Outboard Association held its work party on a sunny morning
up at Howard and Jan Shaw’s house. Over a dozen of the association’s
members volunteered for several hours maintaining, restoring, and adapting all
of our existing and new equipment. Most notably, Rick Montoya spent several
hours under the hood of the club’s newly acquired van, giving it a “race ready”
tune-up. Howard Shaw, Jim Nilsen, Mark Mallory and Rick Sandstrom spent most
of the morning removing items from the old cub trailer and found them new
homes within the confines of the van. Pat Gleason and others spent several
hours on the video capabilities associated with the new digital clock from
Alzatrax. Jan and Howard.
The Silver Lake Resort in Silverlake, Washington was fully occupied by the
racers and families of SOA the first weekend of May. Kyle Bahl had been working
frivolously for several weeks prior to the event working out the logistics and tying
up the loose ends familiar to a race director. Racing began around noon
Saturday and ended promptly at six thirty. With the exception of three wet
drivers, and one very unfortunate and serious foot injury, the inaugural race-day

at Silver Lake was a success. A trophy presentation was held following the races
one of the resort’s buildings.
Preceding the racing Sunday, a hat was passed around for Cameron
Hansing’s foot injury and nearly six hundred dollars was collected in just a short
time. This impressive feat was just one of the many fundraisers being planned to
help our comrade in need.
Sunday’s race day was just as packed as Saturdays. The only water
access was a boat ramp barely wide enough for two C Stock Hydros. However,
with the assistance of “Slippery” Rick Hannon and a loudspeaker, the coming-
and-going was handled with smooth efficiency. I would like to personally thank
the ladies-of-the-barge, Lisa Peterson and Denise Johnson, as well as our referee
Jim Nilsen, and inspectors Dave Anderson and assistant Carl Lewis for their efforts
on and off the course. And a special thanks to the owners of the Silver Lake
Resort and race director Kyle Bahl for their hospitality and time.
A few weeks pass and the racing continued at Connelly Park, at the north
end of Moses Lake. The Tacoma Inboard Racing Association held its Solar Cup,
which featured several inboard, vintage, flat-bottom and outboard classes. The
course was a mile-and-a-quarter oval, with its six-buoy turns occupying most of
the width of the lake. Unfortunately, wind and boat traffic hindered some of the
outboard classes from taking to the water more than once over the two days.
Regardless, Kyle Bahl managed to set a new competition course record in C
Stock Runabout at 59.xxx miles an hour. Dave Anderson was very close to a
record in D Hydro, however it still remains a blank slate for this class. Anna
Cappelletti and her crew deserve a big thank you for extending the invitation to
the selected outboard classes.
The outboards have two races to look forward to in just the next two
weeks. The Columbia Outboard Racing Association and the Newberg Boat Club
will be hosting the 65th Newberg Memorial Day Weekend Boat Race, featuring
Stock, Modified, PRO, Junior and OPC category racing. The following Saturday
will be the annual Silver Lake Challenge held on Silver Lake just south of Everett.
Both races are long-standing traditions for outboard racers in the Northwest.
Whidbey Island Roostertails has been working tirelessly, thanks to the
efforts of Mark Kauth and Ron Magnuson, to put on an event at Sun Banks
Resort in Electric City, Washington. Unfortunately, the attendance is expected to
be too low to put on a race so the event will be cancelled. The first race for the

Roostertails will be their July 14-15th Lake Pleasant race near Forks, or Vampire
land as the rest of the world knows it, from the hit series Twilight.
See you in the first turn,
Kyle Lewis
Region 12:
This past month in Region 12 has given us a little break, allowing us racers
the time to make any necessary repairs or improvements to our engines or
boats. We have reached our offseason and, for Region 12, we’re not expecting
to see a race course again till August at Marine Stadium in Long Beach. Others
are looking to travel, unfortunately Region 11 has had some bad luck on getting
a race put on, having to cancel their past two races that were scheduled,
being the Lake Minden race and the Oroville race as well. Hopefully the race in
Chowchilla in July will work out, as I know a few Stock Outboarders from Region
12 intend to be there. As for some of the region’s inboarders, they plan on hitting
the Burley, Idaho race in mid-June, where ASH and AXH have also apparently
been sanctioned. Also what is coming up for us is the Newport Boat Show. Mike
Quindazzi has asked me to get anyone that is willing to help out and have their
boat on display at this show, so anyone who would like to help out and help to
hopefully get some more racers out on the water and get more people
involved, please contact me. Anything will help! Thanks everyone! See you all
on the water!
