Inhabiting The StoryWa s n ’t the royal wedding wonderful?I thought that it was a very movingand meaningful occasion that seemedto grip the whole nation; anotherimportant chapter in our Island story. What it is to be ‘us’ is best expressedin stories – 1066 and all that, theMagna Carta, the defeat of theSpanish Armada, the growth ofempire, standing alone against Hitlerin 1940, and, of course, our love/haterelationship with Brussels! These andmany other stories make up the grandstory which makes us what we are, expresses our national identity andwhich helps form the next generation. So it is with the Christian story toldyear on year through our manyfestivals. We have just passed through Holy Week and Easter reliving thecentral truths of the faith; the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This month sees two more important episodes in the grand story.Ascension Day (2 June) marks the final appearance of the risen Jesus tohis disciples, and on Pentecost Sunday (12 June) we remember thecoming of the promised Holy Spirit to those first disciples, giving thempower to go out and share the good news of Jesus with others. T h i smarks the birth of the Church, the story of which is still being writtent o d a y. Church festivals are pegs throughout the year on which we hangd i fferent parts of the story that makes the church what it is; the story thatmakes Christians what they are and by which we live.I n t e r e s t i n g l y, there is one further special church day in June; Trinity Sunday(19 June), which doesn’t have anything directly to add to the story. It’s thelast big day before Advent and the run up to Christmas, when we starttelling the story all over again, six months from now. You could say Tr i n i t ySunday is a bit of an anti-climax. We seem to go from re-telling the

wonderful old, old story to trying to sum things up in doctrines andpropositional statements – one God in three persons. Seasoned vicars tendto invite a guest preacher to do the sermon on this occasion! But that day shouldn’t be about giving a sermon that attempts to arrive ata definitive statement about God. Rather it is a timely reminder that Godis ultimately incomprehensible and not reducible to the size of our human minds. The Bishop of London shared with the newlyweds the words ofCatherine of Siena: Be who God meant you to be and you will set theworld on fire. These were wonderfully encouraging words for two youngpeople setting out on a new life together and seeking to bring the best outin each other. They might also be a reminder that God has made us for apurpose. God is ultimately incomprehensible but he can be known, andwe can best experience God by inhabiting the story given to shape us asthe people we are meant to be.

Our Historic BuildingsHave They a Future? Our parish is rich in church buildings. One of them is Anglo Saxon, very rare.Another is one of only two thatched churches in Essex, also very rare. The otherfive were built well before the Anglican Church was founded and are all importanthistorical buildings. They are a glorious collection and all seven are ‘special’.We are in the position of a youngster who has inherited a marvellous stately home,a national treasure, without the money to keep it up. Our visitors books show thatother people also appreciate these treasures, some of them from overseas. Each church costs at least £1600 per month to maintain, but is used for only a fewhours, so they have an operating cost of at least £500 per hour on average. A n ybusinessman would shudder. What would Jesus think? How many churches do we need for a parish of some 2000 people – perhaps on aSunday they could squeeze into one church! Let us imagine that we did that. What would we do with the other six? Let them fall down? But then we wouldhave six villages with ruined churches at their centres. Sell them off? Say one asa car auction house, one a holiday centre, one a market place with country shop

and post office, one a health centre with exercise machines and village nurse, oneas a community centre. Ouch! These special buildings, they need friends. For instance, there are 10,000 people in Baldock. St Mary’s Church at the centreof this historic town had a tower and spire that needed renovating at a cost of£400,000 (Medieval craftsmen are now expensive). The church is active withsome 100 people attending Sunday services and probably another 100 attendingweekday activities, so if each gave £2,000 the building would be made safe. Notp r a c t i c a l !But the building had friends. Nobody in the town wanted to see a derelict churchat the centre. For some it was a beautiful central building, for some it was history, for some it was a Christian centre. The town, as a whole, befriended it.Our seven parish churches need friends. It doesn’t matter as long as there are suchpeople who could work and organise and help preserve a precious heritage. T h e yneed to come from the whole society. This must be a joint venture. Elmdon(contact Stephen Baxter 838278) and Strethall (Contact Michael Pearson 01799521290) already have such groups of ‘Friends’. Jesus put people before buildings – so should we! But that does not mean weshould let our buildings decay. We should hand them on for futuregenerations to enjoy. If you would like to support your church and these wonderful buildings, Pleasespeak to your village contact listed on the inside back cover or the church off i c eif you would like to be a friend to any of our churches. Donations can be made to The Icknield Way Parish Trust and sent to The Churc hOffice, Crawley End, Chrishall SG8 0QL.Thank you!P e t e r H o d g e s

Saffron Walden ... andSupermarkets - an updateOver the last 18 months, applications from Tesco, Waitrose andSainsburys have been submitted to Uttlesford District Council (UDC)to extend existing stores or to build a new one. This article summarisesthe current status and considers the impact on Saffron Walden, thesurrounding villages and the residents. In October 2009, Tesco submitted an application to extend their currentpremises in Radwinter Road by approximately 50%. In November,Sainsburys also submitted an application for a brand new store, whichwas larger than a combination of the existing Tesco and Waitrose, onthe old Granite site and “tip” in Thaxted Road. Two organisations wereformed to fight or support these applications. Save Walden Town Centre (SWTC) was created from local activistgroups such as Friends of the Earth and Campaign for the Preservationof Rural Essex together with local business men, Saffron WaldenInitiative and residents who were strongly opposed to both applicationson the following grounds;• The impact on the viability and vitality of the centre of Saffron

Walden and the people who trade there. Much of the space in theseapplications is dedicated to non-food items and thereforedevelopment has a direct effect on smaller retailers who arealready struggling to make ends meet. The centres of other townssuch as Royston and Fakenham have been decimated by out oftown supermarkets which have removed customers, reducedturnover and resulted in shop closures.

• Increase in traffic and congestion around the town as potentialcustomers are drawn to these supermarkets both from the town andsurrounding areas. Increasing the number of customers is the onlypotential justification for more retail space. Saffron Walden isalready congested and the road system and one-way streets werenot designed for the current traffic levels let alone an increase. Some areas of the town could see a doubling of the number of cars

and significant increase in heavy goods vehicles delivering itemsfor sale. Some villages will be affected by heavy delivery trafficpassing through.

• Lack of a demonstrated need by either Tesco or Sainbury’s forincreasing the amount of retail space in Saffron Walden.

• The level of pollution in a number of areas in Saffron Waldenalready exceeds the legal limit. Increasing traffic and congestionwill only make this situation worse.

Another group (Saffron Walden needs Sainsbury’s; SWANS) wasformed to gain support for the Sainbury’s application as it wouldincrease the freedom of choice for customers who did not wish to shopat Tesco and found Waitrose too expensive for their needs. The groupwas very active in canvassing opinion and used Facebook tocommunicate information. In early December 2010, after a number of delays, the DevelopmentControl Committee of UDC met to discuss both applications. Theoutcome was to turn down Sainsbury’s application based on theChairman’s casting vote and to narrowly approve the Tesco applicationsubject to some conditions. For once SWTC and SWANS were inagreement that the meeting was dreadful with failure of the PlanningDepartment to highlight the significant issues and Essex CountyCouncil Highways Department to provide satisfactory solutions to thetraffic issues. There have been 2 other developments since that meeting. Waitrosehave submitted, and had approved, an application for an extension oftheir town centre store with changes to the car parking arrangementsand Sainsbury’s have indicated that they will be submitting a newapplication for a store 20% smaller than that in the original plans.Whether this new application addresses the issues and reduces theimpact on the town remains to be seen. However it still leaves thequestion, does Saffron Walden need 3 large supermarkets at theexpense of small retailers and with the impact on the town and some ofthe surrounding villages?

My FavouriteMany of us will remember occasionsat school when we were asked towrite about a given subject. RecentlyMrs Hall, teacher of Year 5 and 6pupils at Chrishall School, gave herclass the following task forhomework: “Write at least threeparagraphs on something that is yourfavourite.” She received many piecesof interesting writing. We hope thatyou enjoy this example written by aYear 6 pupil, aged 11.

The ThreeInvestigatorsHave you ever read a ThreeInvestigators story? If not you shoulddefinitely try one because they aremy favourite books. They are a serieswritten in the 1960s, 70s and 80sabout three boys who form acompany called The ThreeInvestigators. There are about fortybooks in the English series but inother languages there are more. InGermany over 190 books about theboys have been published by lots ofdifferent people. I have got fifteen ofthem and they were originally myDad’s when he was a boy. The authorof numbers one to nine and alsoeleven in the English series is thecreator Robert Arthur — while therest were written by various otherauthors, he stayed on to be the editorof many of them. All the books have

really detailed, bright covers thatmake you want to read the books.

They are all set in Rocky Beach,California where the three boys live.Their names are: Jupiter Jones, FirstInvestigator; Pete Crenshaw, SecondInvestigator; Bob Andrews, Recordsand Research. They are about 13-14years old. Jupiter lives with his auntand uncle at the Jones Salvage Yardand this is where the threeinvestigators have their headquarters.Once, in the first book they manageto get an old printing press runningwhich they use to make a set ofbusiness cards. They always showthese to anyone who comes askingthem for help or is involved in amystery. The long running joke in thebooks is that their logo is threequestion marks and every timesomeone sees the card the first thingthey always ask is “What are thequestion marks for?” I love the waythat they solve all sorts of mysteriesfrom following a trail of clues left byparrots to investigating a green ghostthat is haunting an old house.

My favourite one so far is numberseven, The Mystery of the Fiery Eye. Ilove it because so much goes on atonce, false clues are left, a murder isfaked and a strange man with a blackmoustache is suddenly very interestedin the three boys... It all starts with a

teenage boy named August A u g u s twho has been left a strange letter byhis recently deceased great-uncleHoratio August. He goes to The T h r e eInvestigators for help (they have bynow become very well known in thearea). They discover that the ‘FieryE y e ’ that is mentioned in the letter is aunique, priceless ruby, stolen from T h eTemple of Justice, India! They worktogether and solve part of the letter. Ittells them of some busts of famousAmerican people that have come fromA u g u s t ’s uncle’s house. A false FieryEye is found in one of the busts.Having unscrambled more of thepuzzle the boys find a velvet-lined boxin a different bust but still no FieryEye, just a message saying: D e l v ed e e p e r. Time is of essence. The storyconcludes with the boys finally

solving the last part of the letter.A u g u s t ’s great-uncle had lovedsundials and was fascinated byd i fferent ways of telling the time.Studying the natural sundial near hishouse he found out that on A u g u s t ’sb i r t h d a y, 6th August, the tip of thelong shadow that stretched across hislawn marked a spot that was onlymarked once a year at 2:30pm and thisis where he had buried the Fiery Eye.As the boys rush to his house theydiscover that it is to be knocked downthe next day. Luckily, they manage tomark roughly where the shadow willbe the next day. They sneak back inthe night and find the Fiery Eye forreal. It ends with August selling theruby and giving each investigator agenerous reward, which went towardstheir college funds.
