F airbanks Arts Association is hitting a 40 year milestone and we’re celebrating with this

year’s Charlie’s pARTy for the Arts. Incorporated in 1966, FAA is Alaska’s oldest arts council and is the official arts orgaization for both the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the City of Fairbanks. FAA’s programs focus on five disciplines: Visual, Literary, Performing, Community Arts and Arts Education.

Celebrating With Charlie Every organization has a symbol of identity. For FAA it is “Charlie” the dancing Caribou, created by Eric Cline. He shows up on posters, letters, invitations-- just about anything involving FAA. When you see Charlie, you know one of our staff, members, or volunteers is nearby. FAA celebrates Charlie every year at Charlie’s pARTy for the Arts, an annual event that brings members and friends of FAA together for a raffle and live auction to raise money for programs offered by the organization. In the past Charlie’s pARTy for the Arts has included a sit down meal, but this year we are celebrating with cake, ice cream and champagne. Tickets are $10 each.

Auction and Basket Raffle All parties have entertainment. At Charlie’s pARTy for the Arts, the best fun is participating

in the live art auction and basket raffle. The auction features original works created from an item selected by the Charlie pARTy committee. This year the committee selected a photo box, donated by Bower’s Office Supply.

Approximately 20 local artists are donating their time and additional materials to create one-of-a kind works of art. The basket raffle is another opportunity to take home a collection of fun stuff. A drawing will be held during the evening for five different baskets representing FAA’s five disciplines. Each basket is filled with goodies such as prints, jewlery, books, soaps and quilts. Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or 3 tickets for $5. Tickets are currently on sale in the Bear Gallery and will be available on the

Micheal Francis Kelly was born in Carson City, Nevada

about 50 years ago and grew up in the fruit basket of the world before it was known as Silicon Valley, CA. “The call of the north drew my wife and I to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1975. Attending the University of Alaska in the late 70’s I moved to Juneau in 1993. By day I work as a Systems Programmer for the State of Alaska. I have had no formal training in art or photography but my mother is an artist and some of her enthusiasm may have rubbed off on me. Photography is a form of meditation for me. I purposely use the automatic features of the camera when I can, to remain spontaneous when shooting. My day job is quite technical but I try to use photography to explore other venues. When walking with a camera I ‘see differently than walking without a camera. I look in a more

attentive way, without my mind wandering. On a good day there is no photographer, just process.

The Society of Bodacious Art Dolls (SoBAD) is a group of fiber artists who primarily

make cloth dolls. This group was formed in November of 2002 with eight charter members. The group has grown to twenty members and new membership is by invitation only. “Our group includes a diverse cross-section of women from throughout the community, some with formal art training, some who have been making dolls for years but most who have a strong sewing/quilting background interested in pursuing something new, fun and entertaining. “We were invited to open as featured artists for First Friday at Artworks and Light in the Attic Gallery. Several members of our group had work selected to appear at the Bear Gallery in the Interior Artisans shows and the Alaska Fiber Festival in Anchorage. In addition, several of our members had their work published in the Art Doll Quarterly and Quilting Arts Magazine during 2004 and 2005.”

Every year local artists create one of a kind art pieces for auction at Charlie’s Party for the Arts. Examples of artwork: 1) Craig Buchanan “My Upside-Down Image In Your Nose” 2) Sara Tabbaert’s “While Mountains Burn” 3) Dixon Jones “Rapprochement” 4) Rachael Kvapil’s “A View of Life (Girl)” 5) Mary Beth Michaels “Box” The auction will be on Saturday, June 3rd in the Bear Gallery during Charlie’s pARTy for the Arts. ~photos by Kathy Baker-Addy

Fairbanks Arts Association Begins Summer Hours

in the Bear Gallery

Fairbanks Arts Association’s Bear Gallery and Gift Shop will begin

summer hours starting May 29th and running through September 2nd. During this period the Bear Gallery will open at 11am and close 9pm daily. The extended hours mean we need more volunteer docents to run the gift shop, answer questions about the current exhibit, and ensure the integrity of the artwork on display. Fairbanks Arts Association provides training for prospective docents. Anyone with an interest in art can develop the skill necessary to help in the Bear Gallery.

To become a volunteer docent contact Kathy Baker-Addy, Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts Coordinator at 456-6485, Ext. 227 or email [email protected].

Jim Madonna is Professor Emeritus of Mining

Extension at the University of Alaska where he began teaching in 1973. Between 1987 and 1989, he hosted a weekly, one-hour radio talk show in Fairbanks, Alaska. The featured guests were Alaska pioneers who shared their frontier adventures.

Subsequently, fans of the program urged Jim to present the content of the interviews in book form. As a result, he published them in three volumes-“The Alaska Gold Trails” series.
