Tideswell Cricket Club May match reports 4 May - Baslow v Tideswell :TCC 194-6, Baslow 100 *11 May – Tideswell v Parkhead: Parkhead 132-8, TCC 135-3 After the long unbroken months of sunshine, the cricket season is finally upon us. But while the weather leaves plenty to be desired, the quality of the cricket has been good. TCC normally begin the season with an away defeat by Baslow, from which it is possible to draw certain conclusions, e.g. whether the team has anyone capable of respectable batting, bowling or fielding this season. In 2003 one name has made the list in emphatic style – Pat Cafferky, whose 110*, including 5 sixes and 11 fours, laid the foundation for what was the first win in this fixture for at least 10 years. Mike Sayers (37) shared in a 160 partnership that built a total Baslow were unable to get near – especially with this season’s captain John Goddard also establishing his credentials with 4- 17 off six overs and 3 catches. Naturally morale was good for the following weekend, though Shef- field’s Parkhead CC can field a formidable friendly side. John Goddard put the visitors in to bat in chilly conditions on a dampish wicket which concealed occasional spiteful bounce. Soni (32) and Noble (39) were the top scorers in a cautious innings that set a manageable target – if the weather would allow. In the end it was bad light that was the greatest threat, and full credit to the visitors for sportingly playing on in the deep gloom after 8 p.m. as Tideswell finally ground out the runs. The winning shot was hit by Tim Pepper (40*), the other main scorer being Mike Sayers, who had to retire hurt on 48 with a pulled muscle. Tides- well’s young bowlers also starred: Matt Turner took 3-12 and Ryan Finney 2- 20. Despite the fact that on 18 th May the conditions did not allow even a start against BT Pensions, we wouldn’t want to leave any blank spaces, so here is a thought from St Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians for all those who engage in voluntary work: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.* Match ball sponsored by N.T. After the long unbroken months of sunshine, the cricket season is finally upon us.

Mike Sayers (37) shared in a 160 partnership that built a total Baslow were unable to get near – especially with this season’s captain John Goddard also establishing his credentials with 4-17 off six overs and 3 catches.

Naturally morale was good for the following weekend, though Shef-field’s Parkhead CC can field a formidable friendly side.

Kevin’s Community Corner.

Kevin Lowe, our Community Police Officer/Beat Man-ager, reports that, as a result of information received from the community, a person was arrested under sus-picion of stealing radio aerials from cars parked in High St about a month ago. This person, Kevin says, was not from Tideswell, but a local youth has also been arrested as an accomplice. Both of these people are going through the judicial procedure. Kevin said ‘This is the sort of co-operation that gets re-sults for us all. When members of the public are will-ing to give us information that the police can act on, we will’. Kevin went on to say ‘I am very grateful for the help that you have given me and I hope that this will encourage more co-operation between the police and the community, thank you’. Kevin can be con-tacted on 01629 762029.

Dear Sir, I feel compelled to write this letter in response to the seemingly endless stream of "We hate the young people of Tideswell" whinges featured in this publication. Most of these seem to be based around "I shouted/whined/threatened them with death but they didn't listen." I'm not surprised. If you really expect them to immediately stop whatever they are doing, you have forgotten what it is like to be young. It is true that, for better or for worse, the young people of today have more freedom and more legal protection than ever before. While we can sit around shaking our heads and grumbling about it, at the end of the day we must face the facts. Encouraging a "them and us" mentality is not the solution to any problem, and neither is complaining about it in the hope that it will go away. I believe that the only practical method of dealing with this "youthful exuber-ance" is for the older generations to win the respect of the young people of Tideswell, as painful as it may sound. We young people are not inherently evil - but shouting at us will get you nowhere in this day and age. A little mutual respect, however, can go a long way. Yours faithfully, George Walkden (17 and a half) Mayfield House, Terrace road, Tideswell

Closure of the ESM In reply to the letter in the last village voice re. the closure of the ESM. Firstly may I question the reasoning of the editorial committee in allowing such an arti-cle to be printed with 'name withheld'. If the village voice has become the tool by which people can write personal criticism and not even have to sign their article, then I fear you are on a downward spiral.

The 5 members of the committee have made not secret that the club was in finan-cial difficulties; indeed it was made perfectly clear at the last AGM. I have told everyone that has shown an interest, or who has passed comment over the last 6 months, that the club is on the verge of closure. As a committee we have almost begged people to join us.

What has actually happened is the club should have closed its doors many months ago, but sheer hard work and determination from the very small commit-tee has kept it open. May I make one thing perfectly clear? The strippers were organised by Tideswell football club, who asked the club if they could use the venue for the evening. We were not in a position to turn down any trade, despite the fact that the committee were very much against the idea of strippers.

With regard to the club being run as a youth club -ever since the club was opened in the 1960's it has been a rule that anyone over the age of 16 years can become a member and purchase alcohol. The young members of the club, on the whole, have never been any trouble; they have shown unfailing support for the club, making it their meeting place during the week. Surely this is better than 'hanging around' in the street and up to no good? They organised a float in last year's car-nival with much hard work and enthusiasm, which won the section.

With regard to charging on the door, the club needed £2,500 per week just to break even. What many people don't realise is the club (although seen as an insti-tution) is a business. For 4 years, I have given 100% commitment to the club, working countless unpaid hours along with the other committee members, we have neither asked for or received any thanks and yes I am proud that we kept the club going as long as we did and I can most certainly hold my head up high, can you Mr/Mrs Anon!!! Bishop Pursglove School Football News

On Saturday 17th May, two teams were entered into the Bakewell Schools area 7 a-side soccer tournament. There were 16 teams in total taking part, and I am very proud to inform you that Tideswell School A team were the winners. They beat Baslow 5-0, Youlgreave 6-0 and Curbar 6-0 putting them into the quarterfinals where they beat Rowsley 3-0, then in the Semi-final against a physically bigger Bakewell side, winning 1-0. Then into the Final where they met Stanton in a very tense match, ( especially for me) going down 1-0 before halftime. More determined in the second half Sam Furness scored a cracking goal from the half way line, and encouraged by all the parents Duncan Brown scored the winner .

So well done lads, Steven Blanchon, Sam Furness, Gareth Bradbury , Aiden Bates, Duncan Brown, James Bainbridge and Daniel Rowe.

Please come and give your support to the lads in this years Bishop Pursglove School Soccer Tournament that is to be held on Saturday 14 June at School, kick off 9.30 a.m.

There will be a licensed bar, barbecue, teas~ other refresh-ments, bouncy castle, tombola~ lots of stalls and games, and Tideswell Brass Band will be playing from 10.30 a.m. Hope to see you all there. School Football Coach Andrew Bates

DCC COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP SCHEME Despite granting monies to all the applications that have been sent through to me, I have a considerable total accumulated in the above scheme. This is available to me, as the County Councillor, to grant to any project that helps the community within the Tideswell County Council District. Grants have gone to help all sorts of schemes from providing new cups and sau-cers to a Village Hall, through play equipment for a pre-school group, funding for an arts project for the elderly, and a millennium tapestry, to a new school play-ground area and help with a scouts hut. Once again I am asking you to please notify any group or organisation that would like some help with funding and ask them to contact me. Grants are usu-ally in the region of £50 to £500 but I have gone higher on a few occasions. . Thank you in advance for your time and trouble. I look forward to hearing from groups in your area in the near future.

Yours sincerely

Councillor Mrs JN Bevan
