We Have It in Us!

Dirron D. Allen, Mississippi State University

Our facility staff at Missis-sippi State has this amazingability to resolve our pro-grams’ issues. I never put itpast us to come up with so-lutions from the peoplewithin our program. Thereason why I mention this is because I feel thesame way about the NIRSA student member-ship. Since the San Antonio conference inApril, I have received emails from students inour association who have brought to my at-tention some very good ideas. People havesent in a variety of suggestions that rangefrom improving the food at the student so-cial, to presentation ideas and topics thatshould increase student awareness.

Our organization is continually growingand so is our student membership. The rest ofthe regional representatives (Jeff, Devon, Cara,Mike, Joe, and Emile) and I are very excitedabout the upcoming year. We know that we arenot alone and we are looking for help fromwithin our student body. If you have any ideasor suggestions, please contact your regionalstudent representative or me. You can find in-formation at nirsa.org. Please express yourconcerns and hopefully we can address them. Finally, I want to challenge our entire studentmembership to not just be in NIRSA, but alsobe a major contributor to NIRSA.

In April, more than 1,700 recreational sports professionals and stu-dents met, learned, got reacquainted, studied new professional practices, and had a chili pepper HOT-HOT-HOT time at the 2002 Annual Con-ference and Recreational Sports Exposition in San Antonio.

More than 120 educational sessions, an all-time high for NIRSA, wereoffered and enjoyed by conferees. One hundred twenty-four exhibitorsshowcased their products and services in the exhibit hall.

A good time was had at the Viva Fiesta! San Antonio Social held at his-toric La Villita in downtown San Antonio. There was a mariachi band,fiesta-style food, and street dancers who got some of the NIRSA mem-bers out on the dance floor. The Club NIRSA Dance Party held at a localdance club, and Cosmic Bowling at Brunswick Thousand Oaks BowlingCenter were both well attended.

The NIRSA Career Opportunities Center, held in conjunction with the2002 NIRSA Annual Conference & Recreational Sports Exposition, wasbusy as always with 275 registered job seekers and 124 registered employ-ers. With the introduction of BluefishJobs, computers were added to theCenter so that both job seekers and employers could take advantage ofthe convenient online technology. Employers posted a combined total of235 positions and had access to the 316 resumés posted on BluefishJobs.Thirty-four employers took advantage of the group presentation roomsthis year.

We thank the Program and Host committee for their hard work anddedication. The committee chairs and all of the volunteers worked dili-gently to pull off a successful conference.

The T-shirt Award Contest is a NIRSA conference classic. The T-shirtAuction netted $790 and the Silent Auction brought in $4,539 for theNIRSA Foundation.

Art Tuveson, assistant director of Athletic/Recreational Services & Fa-cilities, University of Rhode Island, took home a one-of-a-kind quilt fea-turing the winning T-shirts from the 2001 NIRSA Annual Conference forthe sum of $500. All proceeds benefit the NIRSA Foundation. This beau-tiful quilt was designed and sewn by Jacqueline Hamilton from TexasA&M University (Corpus Christi).

Numerous gifts from members were presented to the children in theChristus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital.

Scholarship Established for Bill Healey

During the Annual Conference and Recre-ational Sports Exposition in San Antonio,Bill Healey, CRSS, director of recreation atthe University of West Florida received a bigsurprise from his wife, UWF Alumni, andcolleagues. Although Healey is not planningon early retirement, they informed him thatan Endowed Scholarship had been estab-lished in his name to honor his 30 years ofservice to the University of West Florida.

Brian Cooper, CRSS, director of recre-ation at the University of Alabama (Bir-mingham), was instrumental in developingthe scholarship. In his presentation, Coopersaid Bill’s impact on his students was fargreater than the scholarship created in hishonor. It honors his significant contribu-tions to the university including overseeing

the development of the Oak Grove Natato-rium, his work with intramurals, and twiceserving as the Interim Athletic Director.

The annual William M. Healey EndowedScholarship will be awarded to a studentwho fulfills criteria developed by thealumni/staff committee. Those interested indonating funds, may contact Leah Currey atthe University of West Florida, (850) 857-6173 or [email protected].
