Evaluate Your Task(s) within Landscape Planning

• What spatial scales are relevant for me?– Making obvious where I stand and how far I want to

reach others.

• What time periods for planning and management are under consideration?– Explain how long you think into the future.

• Who shares and supports my interests?– With whom you can join to make a larger impact.

Tourism as an Overall Planning Task– Distinction in Tourism between:

• Local people selling tourism• Foreign people consuming tourism

– Poorly supplied with scientific research– Few institutions with main emphasize in tourist research

• Often as consultancies and not as a fundamental research• Recently increasing, as a consequence of limited growth

opportunities somewhere else

– Concepts based on local experience/expectations and individual backgrounds

– Education for tourism in many cases unsufficient• We are not going to fill this gap here

Selling Tourism• Tourism is an economic activity and a land use similar

to agriculture– In countries like Austria much more income generated by

tourism 8% as compared to agriculture 2%– In several cases as (somtimes last) hope, when other

economic activities do not go well– There can be negative sides for sellers of tourism

• Family unfriendly due to working hours• Seasonal peaks and long periods without work• Not too prestigous to work in tourism,

– serving other people, who are not too high in appreciation

Consuming Tourism– International tourism is primarily urban and site specific

• In general people remember only a few outstanding locations

– National/regional tourism is more rural and smallscale• Japanese people will know Awaji shima, foreigners not, (while they

may learn about Shikokou)

– Concentration in tourism• Smaller destinations are not too interesting for major travel offices:

higher risks, less income• Smaller tourist locations are suited for non organized tourism

– Can Awaji Shima compete with other tourist centers?– Why yes?

– Why no?

Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing• The traditional land uses in Awaji shima

– Like everywhere in Japan in situation of crisis– No edaquate income to be attractive for young

people– Special situation of horticulture/flower breeding in

Awaji– Perhaps 20,000 agricultural holdings

• Many of them will give up in coming years• Many of them are too old to accept something new like

tourism

Infrastructure Development• Large investements after 1995

– After the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake a lot of money was spent in reestablishment of settlements

– major infrastructure projects• the worlds largest suspension bridge, finished in 1998• Establishment of highway over Awaji shima connecting

Kobe with Shikokou– Not considered only positive by Awaji people

• Establishment of prefectural park, major hotels (like Westin) and other resorts for tourism

• Establishment of our school ALPHA in 1999

Role Play• Form again the six groups with 4 people

– Develop „position of interests“ related to Awaji shima from the following:

• Strengthening agriculture/horticulture/forestry/fishery• Selling and increasing tourism • Critical evaluation of tourist potential (e.g. as an investor)• Nature lover/ environmental concerned person• Getting more money for Awaji shima (politician)• A young adult in Awaji shima/ from Kobe/Osaka• A child in Awaji shima• A married wife around 40 years with children• A foreigner in Awaji shima• A member of the band „Kinki Kids“• Another position, based on a particular situation/interest you describe

before
