Losing their house and theirtandem recumbent bicycle to adevastating fire late last yearwasn’t enough to keep Rosa andReuben Rall at home.

Instead, the Upper Sanduskycouple went out and bought anew bike and got back into thegroove of the Great Ohio BicycleAdventure.

The couple, who have beenon all 29 GOBA rides, were hon-ored for their devotion with theBill Gordon Memorial Awardand also earned the riders num-ber 1 and 2 designations for thisyear’s ride.

Bill Gordon, longtime eventdirector for Columbus OutdoorPursuits, which hosts GOBA,passed away suddenly on abicycle ride with friends June11, 2016, just prior to the start oflast year’s ride.

The Ralls said they were hon-ored to receive the memorialaward.

“We knew Bill and biked withhim,” Mrs. Rall said. “It’s anhonor to be chosen for this.”

They began riding in GOBA

as the “vacation we never hadwhile the kids were growingup,” Mrs. Rall said, noting thatshe had almost no bicyclingexperience before embarking onthe 1989 adventure throughYellow Springs, Lebanon,Wilmington, Springfield,Bellefontaine, Wapakoneta andPiqua.

“They didn’t even have lay-over days back then like they donow,” Mrs. Rall said of her firstexperience. “And it was a hillyride.”

While the 2017 trip stops intheir hometown of UpperSandusky, the Ralls said theyprefer the camaraderie of thecampsite to the cozy conven-ience of sleeping in their ownbed.

“We’ve stopped in Upper twoother times, but we always sleepin GOBAville,” Mrs. Rall said,

“because of the people we hangout with. It’s like a big family.”

GOBA HISTORY

Twenty-eight years ago thisweek, Steve Woosley and SandyCreswell began the bicycleadventure of a lifetime.

Not only was 1989 the firstever Great Ohio BicycleAdventure, but it was also theyear the couple met.

It was a misty morning onthe ride north out of Springfield,Mr. Woosley recalls.

“There was this mist out. Itwas kind of strange how the sunwas shining through it early inthe morning as I was headedout of Springfield,” Woosleysaid. “I saw someone up aheadand finally I caught up to her.”

They were en route toBellefontaine, just as they willbe Wednesday morning, although this year they willmake the approach from thenorth.

Mr. Woosley would committhe morning encounter to poet-ry in a short verse that reads:

Misty morning, wheels turningHearts meeting, twiningSummer bliss, never ending

“How could I resist that?” thenow Mrs. Woosley said of the

meeting and poem. They started dating that year

and got engaged. They plannedtheir wedding at a church nearOberlin, which was also thestarting location of the second

GOBA. They were wed June 16— the day before the start of theride — and made the 1990 tourtheir honeymoon.

They have ridden in everyGOBA event since, including the

2015 tour during which Mrs.Woosley persevered through abroken collarbone — sustainedin a bicycling incident, naturally— to ride half of the miles.

They were from opposite sidesof the state and spent the firstthree and a half years living 200miles apart, Mr. Woosley said. Heworked at BF Goodrich in Troywhile she taught school at Elyria.

They would commute to seeeach other on weekends andspend the summers, includingthe weeklong GOBA tour, together.

“This has become ouranniversary ride,” Mr. Woosleysaid. “She refers to it as utopiaon wheels.”

He eventually retired andthey now live in Ontario, Ohio.

The couple said the highlightof their stay in Bellefontaine willbe the Golden GOBA dinner atwhich longtime GOBA riders arehonored for their participation.

The Golden GOBA dinnerwill be at the Bellefontaine FirstChurch of God, 1000 E. BrownAve., from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m.Thursday. A shuttle bus leavesfrom the campground at 4:30p.m.

Not only will non-profitorganizations provide food incamp, but they will also providemuch of the entertainmentBellefontaine has lined up dur-ing the Great Ohio BicycleAdventure stop.

The main event Wednesdayevening is live music presentedby the area’s Christian radiostation while the city’s historictheater and a group that sup-ports local families with autisticchildren will entertain riders onThursday.

Shine FM, located at 88.9 onthe FM dial, was already plan-ning to have a large downtownblock party for local residentsbefore learning about the GOBA

tour. They just moved the datefrom a weekend event to a mid-week concert, station managerMark Bower said.

“We were already planning adowntown concert so when wefound out GOBA was coming,we just moved it back a fewdays. It’s also the first day ofsummer so we called it theSummer Kick Off Concert,”Bower said.

The music will begin atabout 4 p.m. with localChristian jazz musiciansRazzmatazz and Jazz, followedby national recording artistDavid Dunn of Nashville, whosemusic is described as an inspi-rational pop rock, Bower said.

The regional rock bandSafekept out of Marion willclose out the night’s entertain-ment.

On Thursday, the HollandTheatre, the only Dutch-themed theater in the UnitedStates, will open its doors in theafternoon to screen two bicy-cle-related films with a stageperformance later that eveningby the local nonprofit produc-tion company WindmillProductions.

The theater, designed byarchitect Peter Hulsken for theregional theater owners of theday, Schine Enterprises, openedFeb. 12, 1931. It was continu-ously operated as a theaterthrough the early 1990salthough the latter decades sawit divided into a multiplex cine-ma.

A class of eighth-graders ledby the nonprofit board’s long-

time president Kris Swisherbegan a project to restore thetheater in 1999. Work sincethen has structurally securedthe theater, installed a newheating, ventilation and airconditioning system andrestored the theater to a singleauditorium with its originalstarry sky and Dutch stylebuildings, among other restora-tion work.

The theater board is current-ly in the midst of a majorfundraising campaign to installnew seats and flooring in theauditorium, make much need-ed repairs to the green roomand other major improvements.A third of the $1.38 million proj-ect is being funded by a grantfrom the Wisconsin-basedJeffris Family Foundation andthe board has received commit-ments for nearly 75 percent ofthe local match.

The films to be shown at 2:30p.m. include the approximately15-minute 1962 documentary

Vive La Tour followed by the1979 feature film BreakingAway about bicyclists in theMidwestern town ofBloomington, Ind., featuringDaniel Stern, Dennis Quaid andJackie Earle Haley. The showsare by donation.
