On behalf of all Glacier View Secondary Centre staff, I would like to congratulate each of our 2014 graduating students. This year our students have persevered and tri-umphed over many unique challenges and hurdles and for that we’re extremely proud of their accomplishments.

The 2013/14 school year has been one of significant change at Glacier View. The commitment of our dedicated staff helped support the introduction of new educational programs, the expansion of classrooms, and the develop-ment of new learning facilities. Change is not easy for some people yet our students embraced our evolution and took advantage of the opportunities that were presented. Assignments were completed on time, tests were passed and with great anxiety so to were final exams.

In the world of education this time of year is often high-lighted by festivities and celebration but it’s also a time of reflection. As our grads look forward to employment oppor-tunities, continued education, travel or whatever their per-sonal plans may include, it’s also a time to look back at the road they’ve travelled.

Remembering the plans in life that worked and those that didn’t, times when you fell but got back up again, obstacles that at one time seemed insurmountable but later you stood in triumph. Life’s journey isn’t easy, nor will it be going forward but our graduates have grown and

matured in many ways and I’m confident they will use the les-sons of the past to guide them going forward.

A wise friend of mine once told me that in his youth he looked at the world in small ways and his life was equal-

ly full of small and trivial things. The day came when he decided to change the way he thought and he fully embraced the mindset that he was capable of anything; that nothing was too big or too intimidating. “I can’t” was replaced with “I can.” From that point on his life was different and was full of opportunity, excitement and per-sonal fulfillment. I truly believe in our graduates and the endless possibilities that lie before them and I fully expect each and every one of them to believe in themselves and their vast potential.

In closing I’d like to express my utmost confidence in our grad class and congratulate them again for the com-pletion of an amazing chapter in their life. Our school staff, parents and our community are all very proud of you!

Management & Staff wish the Comox Valley

Graduating Classes of 2014

a bright &prosperous future. smiles every day.

‘The best is yet to come.’ This year’s graduation theme certainly has set a high standard to meet, since the present time is one of great events and experiences for our gradu-ating students. It will be extremely difficult for the future to better the present; time will tell. G.P. Vanier is an exem-plary school, staffed by passionate and caring educators for equally passionate and caring students.

When our graduates look back in the future and filter through their memories, what will they remember about being a part of the Towhee family? Chances are, they will remember the time spent with friends and the laughter and the tears that they shared together. They will remem-ber some of the major events and how these events have impacted their lives to date.

It is my sincere hope that they will remember that

school, and in particular, G.P. Vanier was a special time in their lives. Although the best is yet to come, the past and the present have been extraordinary times. Why? Because G.P. Vanier is an exciting place to learn and it con-tains staff that care. I hope that

when they look back, they will feel pride that they were, and always will be, a Towhee.

“It’d be really fun to be on the Jimmy Kimmel show playing on his band,” says Bradshaw. “They have a good theme song.”

Bradshaw’s is also interested in act-ing, noting she used to be on Vanier’s improv team and has been involved in a number of school productions in the

past, including the school’s production of Torn Rainbow a couple of years ago.

Bradshaw would also like to one day become a teacher, and is considering taking schooling to become a teacher at some point after she finishes her degree in jazz. Her career goal after she obtains a degree in teaching is to become a school administrator.

“I’ve always kind of liked the thought of being a vice principal,” she says. “It looks fun so maybe if I become a teacher I could work my way up to vice principal after I’ve had my performing career.”

A L E D I C T O R I A N S

G.P. Vanier Secondary School’s female valedictorian has a variety of goals in life.

Kirsten Bradshaw’s first goal, to become a professional musician, is already in the works.

“I got accepted into the jazz program at Vancouver Island University, where I’ll be studying jazz trombone,” she says, adding after she receives her jazz studies diploma, she plans to obtain a degree in jazz.

Music is Bradshaw’s main interest, and she plays trumpet and sings as well as playing the trombone. She’s in Vanier’s jazz band and the Georgia Strait Big Band, and when asked what she feels like when she’s up on stage, her reply is, “It feels like heaven.”

She’s also in the school choir, G.P. Vanier Harmonic Minors, which won gold this year at the national competition for MusicFest Canada, held in Richmond.

Bradshaw says her dream job would be to travel the world playing music, and she’d like to spend some time in Hollywood, too.

Kirsten Bradshaw

Connor Gibsonthere, get their inputs, and get people excited about student government again,” recalls Gibson. Student govern-ment “can be kind of dry sometimes and I think going forward student govern-ment will be very strong at Vanier — I’m very happy about that.”

Gibson also represents Vanier on BC Student Voice, which is made up of about 60 students from around the province, and meets with the Education Minister to provide input from a student perspective. Out-side of politics, Gibson says hockey is another major area of interest.

“I’ve watched hockey since probably kindergarten, loved the Ottawa Senators, just a die-hard fan,” he says. “I try to watch as many games a year as possible.”

Gibson says he’s considering taking the train across Canada on his way to Dalhousie.

“I’d love to see the country. I’d like to try to his every province. I think our coun-try’s so diverse,” says Gibson. “I think if politics is the end goal, seeing the country’s so important.”

Connor Gibson found his passion before he turned even 10 years old.

When he was in Grade 3, G.P. Vanier Secondary School’s male valedictorian volunteered in the late Stan Hagen’s campaign for re-election as Comox Valley MLA. Gibson was also elected class mayor in Grade 3 and went to Courtenay City Hall, where he met then-Mayor Starr Winchester, who he says was very influential.

After these experiences, he was hooked on politics.“I absolutely love politics,” says Gibson, noting he’s head-

ing off to Halifax to attend Dalhousie University in Sep-tember. “I’ll be studying political science and then after that hopefully I will end up in Victoria working as an assistant at the Legislature, an LA or an EA, and then maybe run for public office one day.”

Gibson has been Vanier’s student government prime minister for the past two years. Becoming prime minister was his favourite secondary school memory, as he had run for election in Grades 8, 9 and 10, before being successfully elected in Grade 11.

His greatest achievement since taking on the duty of student government leader has been getting other students involved.

“I made it a real goal to try to get as many students out

Congratulations to the Grads of 2014from everyone at Searle’s

A special thanks to our International Students that help us grow.

May your dreams and wishes come true!

On behalf of all staff of Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, I would like to congratulate each member of the Class of 2014. I met with this group of students in the first week of school to present them with a challenge: get through their final year successfully and be an example to all students who follow while doing so. Now that we are a matter of days away from closing out thirteen years of public edu-cation, I can proudly say that they exceeded my expecta-tions. Isfeld has maintained its high academic standard, and had a year in athletics surpassing all previous years, but perhaps most noteworthy is that which few people talk about. Isfeld enjoyed a very harmonious year among students, with negligible internal strife, because our grad class undertook their role as those who set the standard for school culture so effectively. All of us are grateful to the class of 2014 for their maturity, commitment and sound stewardship of our school culture.

I regularly encounter grads who are high academic achievers, yet also represent their school at a high level in the gym or on the field, and hold down a part-time job, and

still come out to our many citi-zenship events. When I see these same students come to school a couple of minutes late in the morning, clutching a coffee from a local vendor, I have to keep my perspective. It has been fashion-able for adults to rail against youth since the time of Socrates, but I know these youth are far busier and accomplish far more

than was the norm when I went to school. It is tremen-dously gratifying to see that they are also aware of their place in Isfeld’s history, and have taken the time to share their fortitude, patience, energy and support of others who will take their place next year and in the years that follow.

And so, on behalf of all staff, I would like to thank Isfeld’s Class of 2014 for your many contributions as lead-ers in our school community and wish you well in your future endeavours.

the reason he enjoys school sports.Black plans to attend post-secondary

in the fall, but he was still deciding which institution to go to during his interview with the Comox Valley Record. He will either work toward a Bachelor of International Economics at the Univer-sity of BC or a Bachelor of Chemistry at

the University of Victoria.Black says he doesn’t have a dream job, per se.“More something that’s interesting enough that I don’t hate going

to work, and something where I have enough time to do something else,” says Black, noting he plans to ensure he has downtime from work so he can enjoy his hobbies, such as acting.

“A lot of the time people spend a lot of time working or in school for some purpose of getting more money or improving their social status,” continues Black, adding if a person makes sure they have enough time to enjoy other parts of life besides work “then a dream job doesn’t necessarily matter too much.”

V A L E D I C T O R I A N S

“I’ve really enjoyed myself, pretty much every moment,” Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s male valedictorian Tom Black says of his time in secondary school.

Black’s taken advantage of opportunities to learn acting and theatre skills while at Isfeld, and been a team member on Mark Isfeld Television, which Black describes as “an in-school news source, which doesn’t really cover news very often.” Black is the anchor on the comedic TV show, which airs once per week and features various segments about what’s going on at school.

Black has also been a part of the school’s improv team, and was in the school’s production of the Wizard of Oz in the first half of this school-year.

“I was the Tin Man,” recalls Black, noting the production was very fun to be a part of. “I was also in the Wizard of Oz when I was seven maybe, and I was a munchkin (laughs) so I kind of revisited it.”

As well, Black was on the rugby and soccer teams while at Isfeld, and he notes the team-building atmosphere is part of

Tom Black

Camille Bourheton the Isfeld girls team since Grade 8. The senior girls team attended the provincial championship this year, placing 10th. She also volunteers at Isfeld’s Hoops for Youth basket-ball program each Monday and Wednesday, helping kindergarten to Grade 7 participants learn

the skills of the sport.Bourget says she’d like to do some travelling in the

future, noting she wants to see Europe and South America.

But, first she plans to go to Simon Fraser Uni-versity to take communication studies, which she will start in September. She hasn’t yet narrowed down exactly what she would like to do for a career, but possibly work in the media or public relations.

“I’ve always really liked English and communication and just the way peo-ple interact,” says Bourget. “I think it’s really interesting.”

Listing interests is a difficult task for Mark R. Isfeld Sec-ondary School’s female valedictorian, Camille Bourget.

The problem is that she’s interested in so many different areas of school and extracurricular activities.

“My interests are really spread out — I don’t really just like one specific thing,” she says with a laugh. “It’s hard to pinpoint what my interests are just because I have been interested in lots of things over the years.”

Academics Bourget enjoys range from English to science, with a strong emphasis on biology. She’s also chosen art as an elective for most years since Grade 8, noting she likes that class because she can “unwind” from academics when she paints and draws.

Acting is another art form Bourget enjoys. In Grade 9, she played the role of Edith Frank (mother) in the school’s production of the Diary of Anne Frank. She has also been on Isfeld’s improv team since Grade 9. Isfeld’s team won first place at the Vancouver Island championships for the Canadi-an Improv Games when Bourget was on the team in Grade 10, and this moment is one of Bourget’s most memorable from her time in secondary school.

Bourget’s other main interest is basketball, and she’s been

Congratulations to the Highland graduating class of 2014! On behalf of all the staff, we wish you the very best for a bright and happy future. This year we are very pleased to see our first cohort of International Baccalau-reate (IB) students graduating. This is quite an accom-plishment for both the students and their teachers and something for which we are very proud. It has been an absolute delight working with the entire grad class this year.

We’ve enjoyed growing with all of you during your time at Highland. It is our sincere wish that you take with you the sense of community we have tried to instil within you, the resiliency you will need when you face your challenges, as well as a sense of wonder for the beauty the world has to offer you.

You have left your mark and we won’t forget you. All of us look forward to your successful futures, but know you

still have trials ahead. Remem-ber that whatever you do, you don’t do it alone. Your accom-plishments will come from your hard work and the support of your friends, colleagues, family and loved ones. Take a moment, on this important occasion in

your life, to recognize those who have helped you along the way and cherish these relationships for the future. Your chance to make a difference in the world is just beginning. We know you can do it!

his parents are doctors. “It’s always seemed interesting to me though, espe-cially because it’s in sciences and very hands-on and challenging.”

In his free time, Matous takes advan-tage of the close proximity of Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

“I like to ski a lot,” he says, adding he makes ski videos and posts them on YouTube, and the types of skiing he does

varies. “I do a tiny bit of everything. So, I do a lot of freestyle in the terrain park and then I go hiking and stuff in the backcountry, just little dabs of everything.”

One memory from his secondary school years — but not from school itself — Matous will carry with him is of his trip to South America.

“Last year in July I went to Ecuador with Me to We for two weeks,” recalls Matous, noting Me to We is a Canadian charitable organization. “I helped build a school in this remote village called Shuid — that was a very eye-opening experience to me.”

Matous is delighted he was chosen to represent his grad class and wishes his classmates luck with their future endeavours.

A L E D I C T O R I A N S

Highland Secondary School’s male valedictorian is one of the school’s first International Baccalaureate Programme graduates.

Will Matous joined the IB Programme in Grade 11, the first year it was offered at Highland. He says the academi-cally challenging programme has been a great experience for him, and made for a close group of classmates.

“It’s given us a more close-knit group because there’s 25 or 30 of us that are in every class together so we’re really good friends inside of it,” he says, noting class discussions are particularly lively, as students in the IB Programme gen-erally enjoy academics.

Matous is most interested in the sciences, noting chem-istry is his favourite subject and he likes how science is “so straight-forward and cut-and-dry.”

He plans to take first-year science courses at the Univer-sity of BC in the fall, with the possibility of medical school in the future.

“I’ve always sort of wanted to be a doctor or a surgeon, something interesting like that,” says Matous, noting both

Will Matous

Katelyn Peterson“I like the feeling of being able to

help others and I think that’s an awe-some way to be able to do that because you’re helping the animals, but you’re also helping their owners, who definitely care about their pets,” she says. “So, I think it’s a good mix of working with people and

working with animals as well.”Peterson is kept very busy between school and work,

but she says spending time with her family is very important to her, too.

Representing her grad class is an honour for Peterson.

“I feel really honoured to represent such an exceptional grad class because I feel that the students that I go to school with have so much potential,” says Peterson.

“I think the potential in this class is amazing, so I feel really lucky to be graduating with all of them.”

Katelyn Peterson has known which career path she wants to take for most of her life.

“It’s my dream to become a veterinarian,” says Highland Secondary School’s female valedictorian. “I’ve always wanted to be a veterinarian … I love animals.”

And, Peterson has taken steps to ensure that’s what she wants to do. She volunteered at Van Isle Veterinary Hospital about a year-and-a-half ago for six months before she start-ed working there part-time. She’s been working at Van Isle for the past year.

“They’ve completely inspired me even more to do what they do everyday because they’re amazing … they’re a great role model for what I want to be like,” say Peterson.

She plans to enrol in the university transfer program at North Island College next year, partly so she can continue working at the veterinary hospital and gain some more experience.

“After a year, I’m hoping to go to University of Saskatche-wan to complete my undergrad and hope to attend the West-ern College of Veterinary Medicine,” says Peterson.

Her love of animals isn’t the only aspect of veterinary work Peterson is interested in, either.

Jotham DybleI had a great time at Gaglardi Academy. I will miss it, but I have my whole life before me. Yeehaw!

Emerson GaglardiDuring my time in school, I have made so many great friend and memories. I would like to thank my loving, supportive family; my amazing fun friends; and the the school staff who have encouraged me along the way. I am excited to be attending Simon Fraser University in the fall, where I’m planning to study molecular biology and biochemistry.

Christina LeFortI have been going to Gaglardi Academy since Kindergarten and have thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent there. I plan to work for a year and explore my options for post secondary education.

Angela JanssenI started at this school when I was fi ve and I can proudly say that I have enjoyed every moment. Through all my choices, good and bad, this school has helped me grow, not only as a person, but as a believer. With the encouragement of staff I have discovered my passion for business; and I plan on attending the University of Lethbridge next year to begin my journey towards earning my degree.

Paul NaswellI have been at this school for 2.5 years. It has been a great time hanging out. I am looking forward to my future.

Jessica NivenI have been priviledged to attend Gaglardi Academy since grade 8. The teachers and students are incredibly supportive, and I have made countless memories. In the fall I will attend North Island College to pursue a Bachelor of Science.

Mariah PearlI started Gaglardi Academy last fall for my grade 12 year. It has been such a blessing attending this school, and I have so many great memories. I plan on attending Bible college in southern California in the spring of 2015.

Korinna KlassenI only attended Gaglardi Academy for my grade 12 year, but it was a great way to spend my last year of high school. I gained many skills that I may not have gotten the opportunity to have in a larger school. In the coming year, I plan to work, and in the future I would like to get a teaching degree.

Andrew CampI have enjoyed my 5 years at the Gaglardi Academy. I am looking forward to graduating, building my agricultural business and working on the farm.

Miranda DonovanI have been attending Gaglardi Academy since Kindergarten. After graduation, I am taking a year to work and travel before pursuing a career in graphic design.

Lanna FitzgeraldI have been going to Gaglardi Academy since Kindergarten, and every year has been full of encouragement, laughter and learning. I have so many memories that I am grateful to take with me when I leave. In the fall I will be moving to Burnaby where I will be attending BCIT, in the Architectural Science program.
