Currently, there is a trend in the hearing aid industrytoward smaller and more discreet hearing aids, including the recent development of open fit hearingaids (also known as open ear hearing aids). Open fithearing aids have one major limitation, however;they are not appropriate for many people with a moresevere hearing loss and are best used by those withhigh frequency hearing loss and normal lowfrequency hearing.

This means that those with severe hearing lossinquiring about this new technology may have eitherbeen steered toward more traditional hearing aids(which also have their benefits) or have beenimproperly fitted with open fit hearing aids. However,a recent modification to open fit hearing aids, knownas receiver in the canal (RIC) hearing aids, can makethese nearly invisible hearingaids available to people withmore severe hearing loss.

    Open fit hearing aids provide

    greater comfort in a discreets i z e . T h e y r e e a s y t omanipulate and maintain andcome in a range of styles andfeatures.

    "REMEMBER"

Do you remember a few weeks ago when I

discussed the terror of a 95.2 pound maniac.

Recently the Corporate Jet was visiting down the lane with famil

and friends, when he suddenly got the urge to tear about. Why a law

rake being used to gather lawn clippings drew his attention ma

never be known, but the resulting collision had a predictabloutcome ... Jet (unscathed) ... rake (badly broken handle

Fortunately no humans were damaged (at least physically).

Many thanks to the reader in Salisbury, who shared her own store

of a black lab maniac. If I ever find the time, we may even get it int

print so that everyone can enjoy the pain and joy of dogg

    ownership.

Some of you geezers are probably old enough (if the mind is sti

working) to remember the song "16 Tons" ...(I'm way too young!!!)

"You load sixteen tons, what do you get

Another day older and deeper in debt"

A recent study carried out by Mikie reveals that 32 Tons (of grave

accomplishes pretty much the same result ... older and poorer. Yo

see in order to keep up with the Jones's of Burnside Lane, we needea fancier quality of gravel than the dirt we have been using on ou

part of the lane. Two truck loads of "good" gravel, several hundre

dollars and 24 hours later we're singing the same song with onl

minor changes to the lyrics. One day after arrival, about 24 Tons o

the stuff is spread and we are well along the path of fitting in with th

    "Jones's".

While you are remembering things ... how about computers!! Ca

    you remember when -

    A computer was something on

TV from a science fiction show

    A window was something you

    hated to clean ...

and RAM was the cousin of agoat...

    Memory was something that

    you lost with age

A CD was a bank account

    And if you unzipped anything

in public you'd be in jail for a

    while (more to come later)!!!

WE LIVE IN THE COUNTRY, THERE IS NO RUSH!Schools almost over! Yipee! most students are saying. For the

graduation headaches it has just started for the Police. We just pray toget through another Graduation season without having someone hurtor killed in an accident. The kids may feel that we are bullying them, but we are there for their safety. We are constantly being asked Whyare you pulling me over? I didnt do anything wrong. The hardestpart I have ever had to deal with in my nearly 31 years of Policing ishaving to tell a person that their loved one has just died. It never getsany easier.

This brings me to an incident within the Town limits the other day.Three 12 year olds and an eleven year old boy were laying on theirskateboards on their backs going down the hill and stopping just beforethe oncoming traffic. Imagine what would have happened if someonebacked out of their driveway or they couldnt stop! There are lots ofvacant parking lots where it is safer.

We will be doing more scheduled boat patrols along the Kennebecasisand Saint John Rivers, as well as Belleisle Bay. We will be checking forCompetency cards, life jackets and open liquor. Please make sure youhave all of the equipment you require for your pleasure craft to be outon the water safely.

Have you heard the great new local band in the Hampton area?Junction 49 is putting on a night at the Hampton Legion for the CanadaDay Festivities on June 30th. Another good time is the spread put on bythe Church of Latter Day Saints on Villa Drive. They put on a BBQsupper free of charge. They do not want donations. This is their way of

thgiving back to the community! This will also be held on June 30 from4:30pm to 7:00pm.

stOn Thursday July 1 you can start the morning with a breakfast at the

Hampton Legion followed by a BBQ from 12:00pm to 5:00pm whichwill be held at the Hampton Community Center put on by thePickwauket Lions Club in conjunction with the Fair Day. There will bea dunk tank put on by the Hampton Co-Ed Slo pitch Ball League duringthe Fair Day. Last year the league donated a good portion of the fundsthey collected to PRO kids.

If youre not done eating there will be a Strawberry Social at theLighthouse Park River Centre from noon to 3:00pm... You can finishthe night off with a cold plate supper at the Lower Norton Shore Hallfrom 4:00pm to 6:00pm. For those who want to work off the food youcan take part in the Twilight Splash from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the poolput on by the Hampton Community Club.

Thinking of all this food has made me hungry so I gotta go! Have agreat two weeks.

    HAMPTON - PIGGS PEAK NEWS

The vision of the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is "healthy, safe, and hopeful Swazi neighbours". In a nation with the highestHIV/AIDS incidence in the world and life expectancy of 32 years, this is a lofty goal. Those of us who have visited Swaziland haveseen the situation and know that education is vital in achieving ourvision. In fact, the very act of going to school is an important steptoward our objective. Studies have shown that young people whoattend school are less likely to engage in sexual activity - the keymeans through which HIV is spread. School also provides a saferenvironment for many otherwise disenfranchised youth. Finally, formany, an education is their only hope to break out of the cycle ofunemployment, poverty and disease which afflicts the Kingdom ofSwaziland. This year we have committed to paying for school fees for 80 high

school students at Fundukuwela High School and Peak CentralHigh School (those of you who are Starfish sponsors are helping alot in this respect). What you may not know is that, to attend highschool, a student must also pay for his or her own school uniform. This can be a daunting requirement for many who are havingdifficulty scraping together the money required simply to buy food.

A few weeks ago we received an urgent request to help pay forcertain articles of clothing for a number of students. The amountrequired to cover the uniforms was $865 funds we did not

    st

currently have. So, on May 31 , Committee-member Laura Myersorganized a fundraising coffee house at New Brunswick's newestmusical hotspot, Hampton's own Vintage Bistro. The local talentwas amazing (another great thing about living in Hampton!) Thankyou to performers: Maggie Folkins, Derek Doucet, Erin Mullin,Emily Petley, Darren Farrell, Dylan Farrell, Cole Targett, IanSherwood, Emily Kennedy, Edward Cho, Bill Preeper, SandyMcKay, and Glenn Hall. Thanks also to our sound man, AlanDesRoches, and especially for the generosity of Vintage Bistro

proprietor, Carol Ann Forsgren. Finally, thank you to all those who attended and packed the Bistr

on Monday evening. With local support like this, our visiobecomes a bit more realistic. As proof of this, the total funds raisewere $890 just enough to allow the Partnership to provide thclothing needed by our neighbours in Piggs Peak.

We also received a pleasant surprise from Rosemary Wilsongrade one class at Dr. Leatherbarrow Primary School who donate$100 they raised from a used book sale. Thank you.

With fundraising events like the coffee house and regula

contributions from citizens, businesses and institutions of Hamptonwe are making positive changes in our partner community of PiggPeak. If you would like to make a donation or would like to join ouStarfish Program by sponsoring student fees, please visit ouwebsite at www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca or contact Mark Bettle a832-0003. 110

SAFE SUMMER DRIVING TIPSCar collisions can be unpredictable, but if we all make a consciouseffort to drive safely, then we all reap the rewards. To encourage

Canadians to drive safe this summer, Allstate Insurance Company ofCanada suggests the following tips:1) Buckle up. It seems simple enough, but failing to wear a seatbeltplays a role in more than one third of deaths for motorists and theirpassengers.2) Keep your eyes on the road. Distracted driving is the cause ofeight out of every ten collisions. Distractions include changing yourmusic, tending to a child in the back seat, or using your cell phonewithout a hands-free device.3) Check the pressure. Tires are the only part of your car that touchthe road; therefore, it is important to pay close attention to them.Underinflated tires increase the risk of poor road performance or ablowout. If a single tire is under-inflated by 14 kPa (kilopascals),

fuel consumption increases by one per cent. Keep your tiresproperly inflated and you will save on gas.4) Be aware. Remember that water may hide potholes. Whendriving over a pothole dont slam on the breaks. This could furtherdamage your vehicle or cause an accident.5) Plan ahead. If you are going to take a long trip remember to planwhen and where you will stop before you hit the road. Nevercontinue to drive if you feel tired or unable to concentrate on theroad.6) Beat the heat. Cars commonly overheat in the summer because ofthe outside temperature or from the engines lack of coolant. Toavoid the latter, check your cars fluids before you hit the road.7) Slow down. Driving at high speed reduces reaction time whenresponding to unexpected driving situations such as sudden

deceleration from drivers ahead of you. A secondary benefit ofadhering to the speed limit is improved fuel consumption.8) Be prepared. Keep an emergency kit in your car that includeswater, food, a blanket, a flashlight, and a first aid kit. Also, be certainyou have a spare tire in good condition and tire changing tools.9) Maintain your vehicle. Walk around the vehicle to ensure all thelights are working, including headlights, reverse lights, taillights, turn signals and any hazard lights. Also check that the wiper bladesfunction properly and the windshield washer reservoir is full.10) Have fun! Make a CD or a playlist on your iPod of your favouritesummer songs, try a new route and be open for adventure! 905

ILLEGAL DUMP HOTLINEIllegal dumps have no boundaries. In New Brunswick they can bfound along public roads, near streams, on private property, alonrailroad lines, and other out-of-the-way places.

Illegal dumping is misplaced solid waste and raises concerns ovesafety, property values and quality of life. It is also referred to aopen dumping, fly dumping, midnight dumping, and wildcadumping, because materials are often dumped in open areas, from

vehicles and, at times - late at night. An examination of the literature suggests economics and low ris

are factors affecting decisions to illegally dump. More specificallresearch indicates those who illegally dump do so because theyLack a sense of ownership; Believe someone else will clean up whthey have disposed of; Lack public awareness about the health anenvironmental risks. If you are aware of an illegal dump site, please contact the Illeg

Dump Hotline, or use another avenue, should you prefer, beinsure to provide sufficient information as to location: Toll-Free 1877-777-4218; Fax (506) 847-1369; E-mail [email protected]

They say you had a difficult life,I can agree because I was there.

You had some heavy loads to carryWhile showing four children you cared.

The years went by, you did your bestBut it breaks my heart to say

You still never found the peace yousoughtUntil your dieing day.

Your children were your life,Your hopes and dreams as well.

You showed such pride for each of us,Never faltering when we fell.

Growing up we caused some tearsBut much happiness too.

As time went by we came to truly seeAll of the love we got from you.

As I grew older, I needed you more. You were my mother and my best

friend.I leaned on you in so many ways,

You were there for me until the veryend.

Now that I have a daughter of my ownI can only hope someday shell see,I was more than just a mother to her.

Shell see a best friend in me.

We keep you in our hearts. We say I love you everyday.

We miss you so much nanny. We are so sad you went away.
