Mission
Statement
We, the people of St. Mary
Parish because of
our baptismal
promises and compelled by our Catholic identity, seek
to be an example of
God’s presence by worship,
education, and service to our neighbors
with sensitivity
to those most in need of God’s love.
June 14, 2015 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Now that school is officially over, things would normally quiet down, but this year is unlike other years. Building for the Future, our Capital Campaign, is in full swing. I will spend the next three months meeting with as many of you as possible to help in communicating the goals of the campaign and in gaining your support. This initiative reflects our parishioner’s legacy of caring for St. Mary Parish today and for generations to come.
I am very excited about the Campaign and the opportunity to meet with you during these next months. The first of several open meetings will be on Tuesday, June 23rd, from 7-8 p.m. at the Rectory. While everyone is welcome to attend, I ask you to please RSVP to Kristin Short at 708-447-1020 or [email protected], so we can anticipate the number of people planning to join us.
My hope is that you will take the time during these next few months to attend one of our events, and then to prayerfully consider your personal financial investment in this important initiative. Some of you have already told me of your total support of the goals of the Campaign, but your limited ability to make a gift. Know that it is not equal gifts, but equal
sacrifice. If everyone makes an equal sacrifice to support our goals, I know that we will reach our goals and fulfill the needs of our Parish today as we continue to build an even stronger faith community for tomorrow.
Know that I am most grateful for your support in any way.
Fr. Tom

From the Religious Education & Youth Ministry Office June 14, 2015
Religious education and faith formation are and always have been a part of the fabric of St. Mary Parish. It is particularly apropos then that one of the priorities of the Building for the Future Campaign is to make improvements to the St. Mary Education Center. Renovations to the almost 100-year-old original school building will provide both our school and religious education students, as well as our community, much improved space for learning and formation. The renovations to the first floor of the original school building will create more flexible and multifunctional classroom space for the day school and improved space for extra-curricular activities and for after-school care. In the evenings and on weekends, the renovated spaces can also be used for adult faith formation classes as well as for meetings hosted by parish organizations. Additionally, all of the improved spaces will be made handicapped-accessible and will include new heating and air conditioning.
UPCOMING INFORMATIONAL EVENTS:
The first Open Informational Event will be held in the Rectory on Tuesday, June 23rd, from 7–8 p.m. While everyone is welcome to attend, please RSVP to Kristin Short at (708) 447-1020 or [email protected], so we can best anticipate the number of people planning to join us on June 23rd. All St. Mary parishioners and friends are encouraged to attend to learn more about the Building for the Future Campaign. In addition to sharing the priorities and why the Campaign is important to our faith community, the short presentation will include details about the specific financial goals and naming opportunities associated with the Building for the Future Campaign. Notices about future informational event dates will be posted here as future dates become available.

Ministers at Funerals
It feels good to be able to involve family and friends in the action of the funeral liturgy. If they are trained in the various ministries it can be a natural match. If children are trained as altar servers, they may be able to participate in that role. Many parishes require that the parish musicians provide the music. However, a musician among family and friends may be permitted to work with the parish musicians to contribute their talents. Commissioned extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion among family members may be chosen to serve. Trained readers may assist with the readings. It is very important that they be trained. Frequently when family members are chosen to read, but do not have the proper training or experience, the word of God is lost, since they do not have the ability to proclaim it for the edification of the assembly. Other, non-speaking roles, can be given to family members or children, such as bringing up the gifts of bread and wine at the presentation of the gifts. Or they might, if the presider permits, be able to assist with the placing of the pall on the casket.
