Message from CFEC Board Chair & Executive
Message from Success by 6I would like to thank the Cariboo Family Enrichment
Centre for their collaborative efforts in spearheading this essential community resource. Through commu-nity partnerships and the work of many, parents can now conveniently locate services that are advanta-geous to their children’s development and lifelong success.
Studies demonstrate that children flourish in com-munities where resources for parents and children are readily available. Parenting, nutrition, literacy and play programs all contribute to this early development.
We are excited and hopeful that this guide will not only serve as a connector between parents and potential activities for their children but also as an indication that the South Cariboo is a thriving family friendly community that values children and families.

Message from the Mayor
Message from the MLA
100 Mile House is a community that is proud of its rich history, agricultural com-munity and an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful lakes, multi-use trails, waterfalls and diverse lands, we are proud to open our doors and make our home yours.
As you wander through quaint shops and observe the broad range of services the com-munity offers, you will be particularly stricken by the open friendly people that have made the South Cariboo their home.
100 Mile House and the South Cariboo is truly a wonderful community in which to live, work and play.
Mayor Mitch Campsall
I would like to thank Success by Six, Cariboo Family Enrichment Center and the 100 Mile Free Press for coordinating the production of the South Cariboo Children Services Directory. This is anoth-er wonderful example of how our community supports families.
Research shows that active, physical, and cog-nitively stimulating play is necessary for optimal brain growth and development. Research has also proven what common sense tells us: children grow and thrive in the context of close and dependable relationships. These relationships must provide love and nurturance, security, responsive interac-tion, and encouragement for exploration. A child’s first experience with this kind of relationship is at home with a loving family but it is also important for children to be a part of a community. Children feel more confident when they feel their families are a part of the community at large.
As parents you will find this community guide a valuable resource in helping you to care for your child’s emotional, physical and intellectual needs.
Donna Barnett, MLA, Cariboo Chilcotin
CFEC — Childrens Service Directory 2013 …5
Research shows that the most critical period of a child’s brain develop-ment is from conception to age six. This is when a young child is developing emotional and social attachment, language and motor skills
A young child’s brain develops in response to his environment, Providing a baby or young child with a healthy, nurturing environment in which to grow and develop will create the foundation for success.
The Importance of the Early Years
Economic research indicates that for every dollar invested in high quality child-care, at least two dollars are saved by reduced social costs
and increased labour force productivity. The payback is as high as seven to one for children in high risk situations.
Healthy children lead to healthy communities
The ECD Committee meets monthly to identify gaps and plan for child services. The United Way, through Success By 6, annually provides funds to the community which are allocated by the ECD Committee
to child services which will promote capacity in improving social, emotional and physical health of our children. For more information or to join the committee please call Sheila Glen (chair) at 250-395-5155.

Spring & Fall Sessions For Toddlers & Preschoolers
(Ages 1 to 5 years) & their caregivers
Books for Babies is a Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society project that has been giving book bags to new parents in 100 Mile House since 2001. The Books for Babies program gives parents books so that they can read to their babies and babies love to hear their parents’ voice.
When a good story is read over and over again it helps give children the chance to learn language. Teach your children the joy of reading by reading with them from a very early age and into their teens!
Volunteer community efforts are at the heart of this family literacy program’s success in 100 Mile House.
Volunteering opens our minds and hearts to new ways of thinking and connecting with people.
If you would like to learn more about CCPL, The Bright Red Bookshelves or the Books for Babies program;
or if you are interested in volunteering please email Mel Newcombe at
[email protected] or call her at 250-791-5720
The Bright Red Bookshelf program gives all children in our area access to high-quality books by sharing new and gently used children’s books for families to keep. Books are collected in red crates at community locations and through book drives. The books are then sorted, cleaned and af xed with a label, and set out on Bright Red Bookshelves at sites where families will have easy access to them.
Reading Together As A Family Creates Great Memories And Builds Your Child’s Reading
Skills!Bookshelves are located at the South Cariboo Recreation Centre, Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre, Ministry of Children and Families foyer, Lac la Hache Elementary, Forest Grove Elementary, Horse Lake Elementary and 108 Mile Elementary, Eliza Archie Memorial School and all eight South End StrongStart and Kindergym sites. Families that read together develop strong bonds!

Throughout our history, we’ve actively supported the communities in which we do business. After all, those communities support us too. So whether it’s local sporting events, charities or community services, we’re proud to be good neighbours.
We’re proud to support the BC Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program which gives over 300,000 kids access to fresh, BC grown fruits and vegetables in their classrooms and the Do Bugs Need Drugs? program, which teaches kids and their families how to be healthy. Both are important initiatives aimed at improving the health of children and families.
We are also very proud to support the BC Children’s Hospital.

There are four kinds of transit service:
• Fixed-route provides scheduled service to major destinations and residential areas in 100 mile House, 103 Mile House and 108 Mile Ranch.
• Rural Transit provides service by request only on Thursdays from Lac la Hache to 100 Mile House.
• HandyDart provides shared door-to-door, accessi-ble transit for those unable to take regular transit.
• Health Connections provides service to Williams Lake.
Transit service will not operate on Saturday, Sunday or statutory holidays.
The transit system meets the needs of customers with disability or mobility issues or who use scoot-ers, wheelchairs, pediatric strollers or other mobility aids. There are also bike racks on the community buses which are designed to assist longer commutes. These racks can only be used during daylight hours as they can block the headlights.
In rural areas where there are no designated stops, the bus can be flagged down. Make sure you are in a safe location, easily visible and where the bus can easily pull off the road. Carry a flashlight or stand in a well-lit area.
After dark, customers who feel that their personal safety is at risk or who have a mobility challenge can ask the driver to stop between regular bus stops.
Funding for 100 Mile Transit is cost-shared between the District of 100 Mile House and BC Transit and supported by the Cariboo Regional District.
Decisions on fares, routes and service levels are made by the District Boards based on information and planning provided by BC Transit. Buses are oper-ated by LDN Transportation.

WHEN SHOULD YOUR BABY’S EYES BE TESTED?A child’s eyes should be professionally examined by the age of three to make sure the eyes are healthy, that eye movements and alignment are developing properly, and that both eyes are focusing properly.A child’s future development is highly dependent on their ability to “learn to see.” babies can be examined as early at 6 months if there is a concern.
I SEE. I LEARN.Over 80 percent of a child’s learning is based on vision. If vision problems remain untreated, kids who are packed with potential areleft lagging behind in learning.
EYE EXAM ESSENTIALTaking your child to an eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam is the most important thing you can do for your child’s health. An eye doctor can complete this test even if your child doesn’t know their ABCs.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL-AGE VISUAL ABILITIES• Clear vision in the distance and up close (Blackboard, reading and
computer screen distance)• The ability to maintain focus accurately at any distance• Binocular vision skills including coordinated control of eye position,
movement, tracking and convergence abilities• Peripheral awareness and eye-hand coordination
When it comes to your child’s vision, what could be more important?

THE ROLE OF YOUR OPTOMETRISTYour Optometrist is trained to evaluate your child’s vision and eye health, and can provide you with recommendations based on your child’s unique needs. Their future vision depends on it.

RegistrationChildren are registered for the program that matches
their birth year (proof of birth date is required at time of registration). Each division is set with specific learning goals in mind based on the age of the child.
“First Touches” U5 is the introduction of soccer for 3 to 5 year olds. The emphasis is on fun and learning basic soccer skills through a variety of drills and fun activities. Parental involvement is encouraged.
“Love of the Game” U6—U10 is a scaled down version of soccer. A graduated program has been developed, the player #’s, field size, goal size, ball size and game dura-tion increases to match their soccer developmental level. The rules are designed to promote skill develop-ment, fitness, team-work and cooperation.
Divisional Soccer Program—The U12 division will play “super-eights”, 8-a-side soccer. This is based on the premise that with fewer players on the field, players will be more actively involved in the games and therefore develop better soccer skills.
The U14 and U16/18 divisions will continue to be full field 11-a -side recreational level soccer. Emphasis is on fun, fitness, teamwork and team spirited competition.

School District #27 has one of the largest publicly operated School Bus fleets in the Province of British Columbia. This is necessitated due to the vast distances between our schools and the large geographical size of School District #27. Each day the bus fleet travels approximately 10,400 kilometres on 57 bus routes. To maintain a bus fleet of this size, the Transportation Department has its own bus mechanics to ensure that each bus is operating to the highest safety standards.

Ready, Set, Learn is a school readiness initiative sponsored by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Ministry of Health. Ready, Set, Learn provides an opportunity for elementary schools offering kindergarten to influence school readiness of children. It is intended to facilitate partnerships between schools and local community agencies and early childhood service providers. Through Ready, Set, Learn, families may begin positive connections with the schools system and with participating community agencies.
Events are offered annually at each school in January/February. Call your school or 250-395-9303 or check your newspaper for dates.
Welcome to Kindergarten is a Ready, Set, Learn initiative to help parents and children better transition to full-day kindergarten with the purpose of familiarizing kindergarten children to their school setting, sharing kindergarten expectations with parents, and giving kinder-garten teachers and parents an opportunity to meet before the school year begins.
The Welcome to Kindergarten events help to build relationships with families of kindergarten-aged children and to share information.
Welcome to Kindergarten events are planned for the spring in April/
May. Please call Shelly Joyner at 250-395-

Child & Youth Mental Health offers assessment and treatment to children 0-18 years of age and their families from clinically trained therapists with Master’s degrees.
We have a strong focus on early intervention for children under the age of six and are able to pro-vide timely assessment and treatment that focuses on strengthening the child’s attachment to the primary caregiver(s) and decreasing symptoms related to social-emotional and behavioural prob-lems. Services also include individual, group and family therapies and support. While CYMH services are open to all populations free of charge (includ-ing children in foster care), there are designated Aboriginal Clinicians available within Aboriginal agencies in the community funded by MCFD. For children and youth in crisis, we are able to com-plete a timely Suicide Risk Assessment including follow up support and treatment. Interventions for youth include addressing symptoms of depression and anxiety as well assessing for early psychosis and appropriate referral and treatment.
CYMH staff offer information, consultation and training to others working directly with children and youth. Child clients can also be assessed locally by our outreach child psychiatrist with a physician’s referral. We can also refer to other more intensive resources such as B.C. Children’s Hospital Child Psychiatry and The Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre. Referrals come from community service providers such as physicians, schools and other professions. You can also self-refer.
For more information on services, including addresses and phone numbers of all CYMH offices please visit www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/mentalhealth/help.htm.
BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions also provides information on a range of mental health topics. You can contact them at www.heretohelp.bc.ca or by calling 1-800-6661-2121.
