Farms and forests are two attractions that draw out people who are looking for the great outdoors, so the 2012 Circle Farm Tour is one of the best places to start.

The tour changes every year, so a good way to see if there’s something interesting is to click on circlefarmtour.ca and see if anything catches your interest.

What defi nitely is new is the Octogan Lavender Farm and Studio, run by Guy and Farida Coates.

The fi ve-acre property in Thornhill features arts and crafts and lavender products. The farm opens its second year when lavender begins to bloom on Father’s Day. You also can check it out online at octagonstudio.ca.

“It’s really spectacular and kind of unique to this area,” said Kristine Gervais. “It’s brand new.”

While Vancouver Paddle Wheelers may not be new, the stop at Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is. The catamaran tour boat will be stopping at that location every Thursday during the summer and take people up the Pitt River into Pitt Lake, where they can see the native pictographs, waterfalls and wildlife

(vancouverpaddlewheeler.com).“Our whole goal is to get

tourism businesses in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows,” said Gervais, with Tourism Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows.

If you just want to go for a walk along the Fraser River, Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows is a good starting point. There’s now a coffee shop in the new subdivision at the bottom of Bonson Road.

“It’s kind of a neat little area to grab a coffee and go for a walk along the dikes.”

Also new and more convenient for Maple Ridge residents is Canadian Adventure Charters(canadianadventurecharters.com) that offers four-hour tours and lobster dinners on the Fraser and Pitt rivers on a 33-foot river cruiser.

Their pickup and drop-off point is now Port Haney Wharf, at the foot of 224th Street in downtown Maple Ridge.

But forests, farms and horses remain local tourism staples. People still fl ock to Golden Ears Provincial Park and Pitt Lakeevery weekend.

Horseback riding is the most prevalent item sought for on Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt

Meadows website, (mapleridge-pittmeadows.com).

“That’s the number one thing people are looking for on our website,” said Gervais.

In Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, city slickers can go for escorted rides up to Pitt Lake or Golden Ears Provincial Park.

Equutrails (equutrails.com)and Leghorn Ranch(leghornranch.com) are two companies that offer those supervised trail rides.

For the arts scene, check out the arts and culture tab on Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows website (mapleridge-pittmeadows.com/arts-culture).

To fi nd out exactly what’s happening on a weekly basis, click on the events tab on the website mapleridge-pittmeadows.com/calendar-of-events-2 for a “fresh sheet.”

That’s a calendar of community events that gives the latest times and locations and is updated on a weekly basis and then emailed to subscribers.

On a regional basis, go to Drive Scenic Highway 7, (scenic7bc.com) to fi nd out what’s happening in Hope, Mission and Harrison Hot Springs.

New attractions turning Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows into a destination

Looking for a good time this summer? You don’t have to go into the big city because there’s lots to do that’s new in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

The spirit ofour communities

On behalf of council and all the citizens of Pitt Meadows, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our great city, and encourage you to explore and discover what makes it such a wonderful place. If you are looking for fun, opportunity, or somewhere to put down roots, we’ve got what you’re looking for.

Here, you can enjoy shopping, restaurants and city-living and still be just minutes from exploring the natural landscapes and wildlife along the three rivers and the extensive dike system surrounding our community. The dikes, in particular, are perfect for biking, hiking, canoeing and horseback

riding. And don’t miss Pitt Lake, the largest fresh water tidal lake in North America.

There’s also plenty of activity, year-round. Some of my favourites include Pitt Meadows Day in June, live performances in our civic square in the summer, and our holiday kickoff at A Pitt Meadows Christmas.

Not only is Pitt Meadows a great place to visit or call home, it is also a great place to invest. With more than 200 acres of designated light industrial and business park land within minutes of Highway 1, truck routes, rail and air transportation, Pitt Meadows is easily accessible to surrounding markets and is the perfect fi t for your business.

Come enjoy Pitt Meadows’ remarkable beauty, history and strong sense of community. It’s the ‘Natural Place’‚ to live, work, play and invest.– Deb Walters, mayor Pitt Meadows

My Community Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows 2012 – 7

Maple Ridge is a very special community – 40 per cent of our citizens volunteer in some capacity, and that spirit is

refl ected in everything we do.From the coaches and

volunteers who organize local sports leagues to the amazing and talented artists that produce the music, drama and visual arts presentations that are a key component of our community festivals, the spirit of volunteerism is at the heart of Maple Ridge.

Maple Ridge is also fortunate to be located in one of the most beautiful corners of the planet. The Golden Ears mountains provide us with breathtaking views. The many trails and parks

allow us to fi nd places to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We also have a very active faith community with strong churches and congregations that provide spiritual leadership for our citizens and outreach to the community through charitable work.

In addition, Maple Ridge is home to service clubs that allow local men and women to give back to the community.

My family has ties here that go back a century. That strong connection to history is part of what makes the community so great. But the community is a welcoming place to new residents who are looking for a place to put down roots.

This is a great place to start, because it’s you who makes Maple Ridge a special place to live. This is our home.– Ernie Daykin, mayor

Maple Ridge

Whether you prefer easy access to the amenities of the city or you would rather get away into the outdoor life, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are the perfect blend of city life and rural experience.

There are fi ve shopping centres that continue to expand with the growth of the area. For a night out there are a variety fi ne dining locations and theatres that showcase the local art and talent. For the outdoors, there are dozens of trails in Golden Ears park, one of British Columbia’s largest parks, championship-level golf courses, and a skydiving centre at Pitt Meadows airport.

No matter if you are young or old, there is something in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows for all.– MP Randy Kamp

Kanaka CreekNature walks, a winding creek, waterfalls, a fi sh hatchery and more can be found in Kanaka Creek Regional Park.

The linear park protects a stretch of Kanaka Creek as it winds from the Fraser River near 232 Street eastwards past 272 Street.

The 405-hectare park is managed by the Greater Vancouver Regional District, and is home to the Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society (KEEPS).

The park offers a number of different experiences at various points. Here are some of the more popular ones:

Cliff FallsThis popular picnic spot features picnic tables in a sunny spot and a lush forest setting. Come June, the salmonberry bushes are laden with ripe fruit, in brilliant shades of red and gold. They both taste the same, though the yellow ones are more rare.

To access this area, take Dewdney Trunk Road east from the town centre and turn right at 252 Street.

Riverfront sectionThe section of the park closest to the Fraser River offers canoeable marshes and the easy-going Riverfront walking trail.

Along the way, climb the three-storey observation tower beside the creek, which provides an overview of the landscape here. Bring your binoculars, as this quiet refuge sustains a host of fascinating birds.

The creek and river close in on both sides of the nose of land as

you follow the trail west.Decaying pilings offer mute

testimony that fi shing boats once tied up in this sheltered backwater. From an observation deck that overhangs the riverbank, you get broad views of the mighty Fraser.

To access the parking lot for this section, take Lougheed Highway east from Maple Ridge town centre and turn right on River Road. If you’re coming from the east, turn left onto 240 Street from Lougheed and follow it as it turns into River Road.

THETHE

And one of the largest and most popular of those reasons is Golden Ears Provincial Park, an incredible 62,540 hectares of widely undeveloped wilderness.

Named for the twin peaks of Mount Blanshard, which are said to shine gold from the setting winter sun, Golden Ears lies in the Coast Mountains, north of the mighty Fraser River.

It extends north through untouched mountain areas to the wall of mountain peaks and valleys, which divide it and Garibaldi Provincial Park.

The park houses one of the largest campgrounds in the province with 353 vehicle/tent campsites welcoming visitors to two locations inside the park, at Alouette Lake and Gold Creek. It also offers back-country or walk-in camping at Alder Flats, on the West Canyon Trail, and Panorama Ridge, on the Golden Ears trail, with advisories that some of the more out-of-the-way sites do not have facilities provided.

Fifty-fi ve campsites also adorn sandy North Beach, an open beach in front of the forested

sites, and a great place to watch meteor showers in early August.

Underneath a canopy of second growth western hemlock, western red cedar and Douglas fi r trees, campers and day-trippers can be found exploring the park on foot, by boat, on their bikes and on horseback.

Campers can swim at all campgrounds and day-use areas and canoeing is popular on Alouette Lake with rentals available in the Alouette day-use area.

Freshwater fi shing is also available at Alouette Lake, Mike Lake and Gold Creek. A four-lane cement surface boat launch at the south end of Alouette Lake has overnight parking available for vehicles and trailers. Boaters should note, there is no nearby marina to moor boats overnight.

The highlight of the park is the scenery and the highlight of Golden Ears is the camper’s ability to enjoy the exposure to so much of what makes British Columbia famous. An extensive network of trails through which campers can enjoy the scenery and explore the area makes up over 20-kilometres of gravel/dirt paved adventure.

Hiking, cycling and horseback riding can be done on any one of a series of trails which make up the web throughout the park.

Golden Ears has the most available hiking trails

this close to Vancouver. Over a dozen trails lead to various destinations throughout the park, including the 8-mile/12-km one-way journey to the Golden Ears themselves.

Near the park headquarters, small Mike Lake is the starting point for the Alouette Mountain Hiking Trail – 12-miles/20-km return – to the summit of Alouette Mountain. Once fi nished, you can enjoy a panoramic view of picturesque wilderness: Golden Ears park across the Fraser Valley into Washington and west across the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver Island.

A shorter possibility is the 2.6-mile/4.2-km Mike Lake Trail. Search the understory for signs of old logging equipment and wildfl owers such as the delicate pink azalea, with petals shaped like fi ve-pointed stars.

Golden Ears Provincial Park lies in the Coast Mountains 11 k.m. north of Maple Ridge on the north side of the Fraser River. Access to the park is by vehicle via Highway 7 or Dewdney Trunk Road through the District of Maple Ridge. If heading west, turn right onto 232nd, and if heading east, turn left onto 232nd, then turn right onto Fern Crescent and follow road into park.

For campground dates and fees, check env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/golden_ears/.

In Golden Ears park, there’s quite an extensive trail network. Most of the trails start at the main horse corral. There’s good parking and staging access.

There’s a plethora of trails to explore in Golden Ears park, and most are interconnected. If you wanted to ride for a couple of days, you could.

Not all trails are created equal, though, and which one to take depends on your horse, as well as your own riding skill.

There’s a wide enough variety of trails in the area that everyone can fi nd something, though.

In Golden Ears, you can take everything from two-hour trips to Mike Lake or Lookout Point, a half-day trip up Alouette Mountain and full-day tours to Alouette Lake or Gold Creek.

The Mike Lake trail, in particular, offers some interesting challenges for riders and their horses, with a pretty steep incline at the start.

If you go straight up and down, it’s two hours. The Golden Ears trails also connect to other

networks, including the trails around Allco Park, which can expand potential riding options. You can ride down to Allco Park and loop back around.

There are more trails in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows than just the Golden Ears ones.

Another popular area is the trails around Pitt Lake, with scenic half-day rides featuring plenty of wildlife sightings and spectacular mountain backdrops. There are also a wide variety of trails on the dikes, including the Heron Tree Dike Trail, the Fenton Dike Trail and part of the Trans-Canada Equestrian Trail.

Riding isn’t left just to the experienced either, as there are plenty of places to learn locally.

After passing through the bustling activity on the Fraser River, passengers will emerge into the quiet tranquillity and panoramic beauty of a majestic fjord. Grassy, reverse deltas appear daily in the centre of the lake as the tide recedes.

The cruise travels along the cliff side, where you can observe the ancient Indian pictographs.

The area is still a wilderness; home to bears, deer and cougars.

The catamaran Beta Star holds up to 40 passengers. Visit vancouverpaddlewheeler.com for more information.

Golden Ears Provincial Park Mike Lake Trail: Main Corral to Mike Lake. Horse and hiking trail (4.2 kilometres; suggested hiking time: two hours; elevation change, 100 metres).

Incline Trail: Mike Lake to Alouette Mountain Fire Access Trail. Horse and hiking trail. This steep trail follows the incline that was once used by loggers as a route to skyline huge logs down to Mike Lake from the trailhead. This shortcut eliminated fi ve kilometres of the railroad haul down the mountain. (1.2 kilometres; suggested hiking time: One hour; elevation change: 150 metres).

Alouette Mountain Hiking Trail: Top of Incline Trail via Alouette Mountain Fire Access Trail. The panoramic view from Alouette Mountain is spectacular. For many hikers, the highlight of the trail is the virgin stands of mountain hemlock and yellow cedar. The return trip to Alouette Mountain can take

up to nine or 10 hours. Be sure to carry water in dry weather and expect snow well into June. This trail is a strenuous hike requiring experience and proper equipment. (10 k.m.; suggested time: fi ve hours; elevation change: 1,000 metres).

Alouette Mountain Fire Access Trail: Top of Incline Trail to destination northeast of Lake Beautiful. The trail follows the old fi re-access road through subalpine forest and eventually through a “blowdown” area caused by Typhoon Freda in 1962. (7.3 kilometres; elevation change: 400 metres).

Menzies Trail: Park headquarters to Gold Creek parking lot. Horseback riding, a cycling and hiking trail. (9 kilometres; suggested hiking time: 4.5 hours; elevation change: minimal).

Lookout and Loop Trails: Parkway via Lookout Trail to

lookout and return to parkway via Loop Trail. (2.5 kilometres; suggested hiking time: one hour; elevation change: 75 metres). Park at Spirea Universal Access Nature Trail parking lot.

Viewpoint Trail: West Canyon parking lot to Lake Viewpoint. Good views. In wetter seasons a picturesque waterfall tumbles down a cliff just beyond the Lake Viewpoint. (1.5 kilometres; suggested hiking time: .75 hour; elevation change: 175 metres).

West Canyon Trail (Golden Ears Trail): West Canyon parking lot to Alder Flats. Hiking trail only. Trail follows an old logging grade for 3.2 kilometres then swings uphill. At this point, a short trail drops downhill to Lower Falls. (5 kilometres, suggested time: 2.5 hours, elevation change: 250 metres).

Golden Ears Trail: West Canyon parking lot to summit of North Ear. Hiking trail only. Follow the West Canyon Trail

Best spots to stretch your legs

If you like the outdoors and enjoy fresh air and exercise, you’ll fi nd plenty of opportunities along the rainforest trails of Maple Ridge. Here are some ideas, which offer challenges for a range of abilities and ambition.

from the parking lot to Alder Flats. Beyond Alder Flats the trail switchbacks upward on an old logging road then heads steeply uphill to Panorama Ridge. Most of the elevation gain is made in this stretch. Listen for the nasal squeak of pikas in the rock slides. Impressive view of Pitt Lake to the west and mountains to the east and north are possible from Panorama Ridge. The ascent of the North Ear is made from the east side across a permanent snowfi eld. Extreme caution is advised and proper equipment is recommended. Drinking water may be scarce in dry weather between Alder Flats and the snowfi eld. The round trip to Golden Ears is an overnight expedition for all but the fi ttest hikers. Overnight camping areas are located at Alder Flats and on Panorama Ridge around the mountain shelter, which can accommodate

up to eight people. Expect snow on Panorama Ridge into July. This trail is long and strenuous and should only be attempted by experienced, well-equipped back-country travellers. No open fi res are permitted in the backcountry. (12 k.m., suggested time: seven hours, elevation change: 1,500 metres).

Lower Falls Trail: Gold Creek parking lot to Lower Falls. Hiking trail only. A very popular, easy walk along Gold Creek to the 10-metre-high Lower Falls. A beach area halfway to the falls is a good spot for a picnic or a sunbathe. Some of the best scenery in the park is visible just beyond. (2.7 kilometres; suggested time: 1 hour, elevation change: minimal).

Rolley Lake: There are two short walking trails in the park. Lakeside Loop is 40 minutes return and Rolley Falls is 10 minutes. For your own safety and the preservation of the

park, obey posted signs and keep to designated trails. Shortcutting trails destroys plant life and soil structure.

Kanaka Creek Regional Park: This park offers beautiful walking trails off 256th Street. Rainbow Bridge and marshes are located at the south end, Cliff Falls at the north. This linear park is in several distinct units. The best trails are at the Riverfront and Cliff Falls sections of the park. First-time visitors are recommended to visit Riverfront. If you’re in east Maple Ridge, take Lougheed Highway to the traffi c lights at 240th Street in Maple Ridge. Turn south towards the river and follow River Road west three kilometres to the park entrance on your left.

Cliff Falls: The focal point of Kanaka Creek Regional Park is the falls, a spectacular water

canyon popular as a picnic spot. The Canyon Trail offers a treasure trove of natural wonders. Nursery logs, sword ferns, towering cedar, hemlock and Douglas fi r serve as a backdrop for the tumbling and cascading creek. Unusual tailed frogs and the dipper bird will be found along the creek. Intriguing water-sculpted rock and sandstone formations are visible on both branches of the creek. Because of the precipitous cliffs,

it is absolutely essential to follow the directional signs and not to stray beyond marked boundaries on any part of the Cliff Falls trail system. The park entrance is located at 25100 – 116th Avenue in Maple Ridge.

Hayward Lake: A trail encircling the Hayward Lake Reservoir offers a scenic day hike. The east side trail is 10 k.m. long, but there are other interesting stops on either

end. There is a slight downhill advantage to hiking the east side trail north to south, but if you plan to hike the entire length, consider using two vehicles and parking one at each end. Park at the Railroad Trail parking lot west of the Ruskin Dam. Travel east on Dewdney Trunk Road, then turn south after Stave Falls Dam.

Kanaka Creek is the lesser known of the two, but may be more beautiful. Kanaka Creek has a canyon that has small waterfalls, beautiful trees and crystal clear water. You can fi sh from where it empties into the Fraser River to the 112th Street Bridge. Fishing is not permitted above the bridge.

Fishing in the spring and summer can be rewarding. The river is home to cutthroat trout.

Float fi shing with a single fi sh egg could be successful. When fi shing this river, it is recommended that you wear waders as well as a wading belt. The river does not have a lot of shore access and some places on the river you must cross, can get over knee-deep.

In September, the chum salmon enter the creek. These fi sh are not open for fi shing. These fi sh fi ll the river and viewing them can be enjoyable, kids especially love to see them.

On 240th Street, at Kanaka Creek, a few blocks north of Lougheed Highway, there is a fi sh ladder. A viewing area allows easy observation as they make their way up the river to spawn.

Once November comes

around, the river opens for coho salmon. Check the fi shing regulations for the exact date and regulations.

The coho salmon is arguably the best fi ghter of its species. You can fl y fi sh for them or fl oat fi sh for them. Coho salmon is also one of the best tasting Pacifi c salmon.

The Alouette River is one of the best river systems in B.C., producing steelhead, cutthroat, dolly varden, chum salmon, pink salmon, and coho. Not all are open to retain. Again, check your fi shing regulations.

In the spring and summer, the chum fry are present in the river. The cutthroat trout like to feed on these and this can be the best time to fi sh for cutthroat trout.

Fly fi shing, bait fi shing, or spin casting can all be done on the Alouette. Many people don’t take advantage of this great fi shery. You can take your family for a picnic on one of the many places on the river. Bring your fi shing rods and the kids can have a blast. Just get them out there with a bobber and worm. They may not always catch a cutthroat but they could catch some of the

coarse fi sh or bottom fi sh that are present in this river.

In September, the chum salmon enter the river, but they’re closed for retention.

Also, on odd years, pink salmon enter the river. It’s another opportunity for you to take your kids down to the river and watch, as the salmon make their way up river to spawn.

Once October comes around, the coho salmon make their way in. This species is open for retention, but you must check with the fi shing regulations for quotas and openings.

In December, steelhead enter the river. The steelhead is the fi shermen’s most sought after species. These fi sh are one of the best fi ghting fi sh. Fly fi shing and fl oat fi shing are the most popular methods used for this species.

Seeing the river in the winter after a snowfall is absolutely gorgeous. Don’t let the cold weather of the winter discourage you from getting out onto the river. You could be missing out one of the most rewarding fi shing experiences.

If you’re coming to Maple Ridge, don’t forget your fi shing rods and your camera.

Two wonderful waterways

Maple Ridge is home to its majestic mountains, lakes and rivers. Only 45 minutes from Vancouver, you would hardly know it with its beautiful scenery of mountains, trees, lakes and rivers. Many might not be aware, but Maple Ridge is home to two river systems that can provide any angler a wonderful day on the water. Those waterways are the Alouette River and Kanaka Creek.

Farmers’ market at the centre of town

There are more than 200 vendors taking part in this year’s markets, the majority of which specialize in fresh, local produce.

At Maple Ridge Paintball, you can play all year - rain or shine.

You live for the thrill of the hunt. Paintball, to you, means getting down and dirty in the bushes, the very tip of your fl atline barrel peeking out as you spot the opposing team leader. You let loose a barrage of paint and smile as you see his arms raise in surrender. Victory.

The lower Pitt River starts at the south end of Pitt Lake beside Grant Narrows Regional Park in Pitt Meadows. From there, it fl ows for 20 kilometres south to join the Fraser River at Douglas Island just upstream of the Port Mann Bridge.

Use the term “fl ow” with caution because if you watch the silty waters of the lower Pitt, you will observe they often fl ow north from the Fraser to Pitt Lake.

Like the St. John River on the east coast, incoming tides are responsible for the reversing fl ows on the Pitt River. Each day, rising tides in the Strait of Georgia push back against water in the lower Fraser, which results in the Fraser discharging part of its fl ow into the Pitt. As this water moves upstream, Pitt Lake rises and this infl ow creates a tide on a fresh water lake. On the outgoing tide, water drains from the lake and the Pitt River fl ows downstream once more.

The surface waters of Pitt Lake rise and fall by as much as 1.2 metres during the Fraser’s low-fl ow months in late winter. This means up to 60 million cubic meters of turbid water fl ows in or out of Pitt Lake during a six-hour tidal change. Such large volumes of sediment-laden water, together with diurnal tides, have created a number of interesting features.

During freshet in late May and early June, large quantities of snowmelt from the Interior hugely increase the Fraser’s fl ow and push back forcefully at incoming tides. During this time, tides on Pitt Lake are reduced to as little as 0.25 m. All the water in the Pitt River is fresh, although it is tidally infl uenced. The salt wedge of the incoming tide comes no further up the Fraser than New Westminster and, even there, it lies below the less dense fresh water on the surface.

These regularly reversing tidal fl ows have created what is

called a “negative delta” at the south end of Pitt Lake. Where water fl owing down the lake from the Upper Pitt River meets the incoming sediment-laden Fraser fl ows, opposing currents nullify each other and sediment is deposited. Over time, this has created an extremely shallow south end on Pitt Lake, which presents a navigation hazard to boaters. That is why buoys mark a boat channel on the east side of the lake. These mud fl ats form the largest such negative delta in the world — and it is continually growing. Over the centuries, silt deposition at the mouth of the lower Pitt River, also caused by interactions between the Fraser and Pitt fl ows, has lead to the creation of Douglas Island.

Long ago, Pitt Lake was a salt water fi ord but, as glaciers from the last ice age retreated and the delta of the Fraser grew, the lake was cut off from the ocean. It is now the largest fresh water

Our river that runs backwards

Most people have heard of the famous Reversing Falls at the mouth of the St. John River in New Brunswick, where high tides from the Bay of Fundy push water upstream over rapids and regularly reverse the river’s normal fl ow. But did you know we have a reversing river right in our own backyard?

Powerboating popular on Pitt LakePitt Lake has turned into one of the most popular boating destinations in the Lower Mainland. At 24 kilometres in length, it’s the largest freshwater tidal lake in North America.

“It’s the size of the lake,” Brian Stefiuk, owner of Pitt Meadows Marine, said. “You can put 1,000 boats up there and still not be crowded.”

For those who prefer a scenic boat voyage with plenty of wildlife sightings, Pitt Lake has a lot to offer from that perspective, particularly with the many ospreys who live in the area.

The lake also connects to a variety of trails that can let visitors explore the area outside of a boat.

“There’s a dock at the far end of the lake, with biking and hiking,” Stefi uk said. “There are also natural hot tubs.”

The lake has plenty of sandy beaches, islands and marine campsites that are only accessible by boat to explore. The shore ranges from mountainsides to small streams and coves, so there are a wide variety of scenic views to check out.

lake in North America to be infl uenced by oceanic tides.

The southern shoreline of Pitt Lake no longer follows its natural contours because, decades ago, it was fi lled and diked for agriculture. Prior to that, its shoreline dipped further south and what is now Grant Narrows Regional park was a wedge of land between the river and the lake. Despite the diking, this area remained wet and unsuitable for agriculture, and it is now protected as part of the Pitt-Addington Wildlife Management Area.

On the west side of the lower Pitt River, adjacent to Minnekhada Regional Park in Coquitlam, Addington Marsh is another area where Fraser River sediments have been deposited on ebbing tides.

In 1897, the shallow Addington Marsh was diked and drained for agriculture. Eighty years later, it was acquired by the Nature Trust of B.C. for wildlife habitat.

In 2004, its dikes were breached to restore some natural water fl ow.

Trails on the dikes along both sides of the Pitt River in Port Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows offer viewing opportunities of the lower Pitt’s reversing fl ows as well as the landscapes contoured by its complex currents.

WildPlay Element Parks opened July 2010 in Maple Ridge Park, on Fern Crescent near 236th Street. The Victoria company set up in the former campsite, with ropes and cables in the treetops.

It has many challenging courses and features, including Tarzan swings, zip lines, scramble nets, swinging logs and others suspended between six and 60 feet above the ground.

Everyone must demonstrate the ability to use the equipment before access to any course, and every treetop adventure begins with a navigation session that readies you to tackle four colour-coded course sections.

The rhythm of moving through games comes naturally as you traverse zip lines, rope swings, scrambling walls, hanging nets, wobbly bridges, and other suspended “surprises.”

The ongoing Graffi ti Removal Program keeps our downtown looking good, while the four-year-old Façade Improvement Program has been successfully providing incentives to downtown property owners who want to improve their building’s appeal.

The results of these programs can be found all over the downtown area, and are making our town a place we can be proud to say is “Ours to Share.”

Summer is an especially exciting time to experience all that downtown has to offer, with many different local groups putting on events.

Memorial Peace Park is a hive of activity every Saturday, when the Haney Farmer’s Market brings local food and crafts together in one place.

The park also hosts Canada Day celebrations, Bard on the Bandstand, the Caribbean Festival – with music, food, crafts and activities, and concerts ranging from Adstock and Breastfest, to the aforementioned noon-hour concerts.

The BIA also offers a series of summer markets on the last Saturday of the month from June to September, with themes ranging from art to pets. These markets are in the park alongside the farmer’s market, and combined, they offer something for everyone.

Downtown Maple Ridge businesses put together many great events over the course of the year.

Business in downtown Maple RidgeFor more than fi ve years now, the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association has been working to create a beautiful, diverse, vibrant and safe area for residents and business owners to enjoy.

No doubt you have noticed the murals on some downtown buildings, enjoyed the free summer lunch hour concerts in Memorial Peace Park, or perhaps participated in some of the many events put on by our members?

These are just a few of the more visible results of the efforts of your BIA.

A camp retreat inthe forest

Approximately one hour east of downtown Vancouver, on the shores of Loon Lake, is the Loon Lake Research and Education Centre.

Page 39: June 13, 2012

My Community Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows 2012 – 39

It is set within the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, a 5,000-hectare forest dedicated to research and education in the fi eld of forestry.

The centre is a camp retreat for groups: school research groups, fi refi ghters, religious congregations and a group of kids and volunteers with bigger hearts than notebooks. Almost anyone is welcome at one of B.C.’s unique park spaces.

The camp was intended to provide a stable and natural research facility for UBC’s forestry students. The camp continues to provide the landscape for their work, while now providing a site for many groups looking for a weekend of natural exploration, outdoor activity, or just a vacation from the grey-fl annel grind.

The campsite is a small, but growing part of the research forest. And as its list of prospective tenants begins to grow, so too will the facility.

Presently the camp has sections for youth and adult groups and can house anywhere from 10 to 100 people in its six residential buildings.

However, three newer buildings make the camp all that much more spacious and accessible for those interested.

One of them offers adult bunks with two beds and a bathroom per room. Youth dorms have eight beds per room. The camp has a mess hall, as well as a gym, a rope course, a climbing wall and docks.

Additions include computer labs, an outdoor playing fi eld and a lounge.

The facilities are capable of housing and feeding up to 180 people.

The camp has restrictions on outdoor activities, which can be performed by groups staying there.

Fishing and hunting are restricted due to ongoing research projects (some of which have been active for up to 50 years), while there are restrictions on biking, horses and other destructive activities because of certain projects.

Besides groups that provide their own private programming, UBC offers rock-climbing, water-sports, repelling and other activities and courses for campers.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a permanent fi xture at the Loon Lake Camp, as the group holds Camp Goodtimes for youth there every summer.

The facility itself, as well as the location and surrounding geography, make Loon Lake Camp a premier retreat centre.

From Vancouver, take Hwy. 1 to Exit 44 and follow signs for Maple Ridge/Mission via Hwy. 7b (Mary Hill Bypass). From the east, travel west on Lougheed Hwy No. 7 to Maple Ridge. Turn north off Lougheed Hwy onto 240th Ave. Turn west on Dewdney Trunk Rd. Turn north on 232nd Ave.

The Maple Ridge Arts Centre and Theatre opened its doors in May 2003, following more than 13 years of lobbying by the arts community.

The 43,000-square-foot building was the district’s fi rst multi-purpose arts centre, incorporating facilities for both performing and visual arts. It features a 500-seat main stage theatre, a 165-seat multi-purpose studio theatre, an art gallery, meeting rooms and a variety of studio space for visual artists. The equipment was paid for by a fundraising campaign that attracted $2.2 million in sponsorships, pledges, donations and grants.

“Having a cultural facility in the heart of a community not only provides a focal point for the arts, it sends the message that creativity and cultural participation and education are a high priority for the municipality,” says ACT executive director Lindy Sisson.

“There is no longer a need to always have to attend events in downtown Vancouver. You can now stay at home and experience the best in the arts.”

Get lost in Meadows MazeEvery year the Hopcott family’s 17 acre fi eld in Pitt Meadows is turned into another distinct design using a global positioning system (GPS).

A tractor carves the maze when the corn is still small. It is estimated that each maze takes one and a half hours to complete.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo was last year’s theme. Previous designs have celebrated 100 years of the Pacifi c National Exhibition and the Golden Ears Bridge.

In addition to the maze, there are lots of fun activities for children, including a petting zoo, a bee observatory, hay wagon rides, or a barrel train ride through the maze for those who don’t want to get lost.

This year the maze will be open from August 13 until Sept. 6. For more information call 604-460-0603.

But one day that network, called Experience the Fraser, will exist to allow cyclists and hikers to move within the green belt and move from city to city along B.C.’s major river.

The project recently got a million-dollar grant from the province, which will allow a related project to be completed.

While completing the network will take several years, about 43 per cent of the trails already exist. For example, in Pitt Meadows, dike trails along the Fraser and Pitt rivers allow cyclists and walkers to move from Golden Ears Bridge in the

east all the way along the Fraser and up the Pitt River to the new Pitt River Bridge.

First nations, cities, the province, community groups, Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley Regional District are all involved in Experience the Fraser.

“Fundamentally, this is a legacy that we need to put together for our children,” Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes said recently, adding that people have to keep pushing the provincial government to support it.

“This project cannot be allowed to fall away.”

Golden Ears Provincial Park offers some of B.C.’s busiest and most popular campgrounds.

The park has three vehicle-accessible campgrounds: Alouette has 205 sites; Gold Creek has 148 sites; and North Beach has 55 sites

There are also two group campgrounds and walk-in back country camping. Alouette and Gold Creek have hot showers and fl ushing and pit toilets, while the more rustic North Beach has no showers and only pit toilets.

Campfi res are allowed in the fi re rings only, unless there is a fi re ban, and fi rewood can be purchased. Camping fees in the regular season are $30 for Alouette, $30 for Gold Creek and $21 for North Beach.

To avoid disappointment,

use the reservation system. Between 40 and 62 per cent of the campsites are dedicated for reservations, with the remainder offered throughout the season on a fi rst-come, fi rst-serve basis.

The fi rst-come sites fi ll up quickly, with the “full” sign often appearing about mid-week in spring and summer. You can reserve up to three months in advance.

Reservations are taken at: env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/reserve, or call 604-689-9025 or 1-800-689-9025.

Getting to Golden Ears Provincial Park is easy. From Vancouver, drive east on Dewdney Trunk Road, turn north on 232nd Street, right on Fern Crescent and follow the signs.

The park itself is prized for its recreational opportunities. The extensive system of trails provides an excellent opportunity for hiking and horseback riding. Alouette Lake is a popular spot for swimming, windsurfi ng, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fi shing. Cycling is permitted on roadways and marked trails.

Camping with horses is permitted in the designated camping area on the East Canyon Trail, approximately fi ve kilometres north of Gold Creek parking lot. Golden Ears park provides trails only. Horseback riding lesson/rentals, stables etc. are not available within the park.

As of April 1, the park’s hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Park hosts and a security • patrol are available during the summer.Canoes/kayaks/pedal boats • are available for rent in the park, weekends only, from May long weekend to late June and daily from late June to Labour Day, (weather permitting). Call the park operator at 604-466-8325 for more info about canoe rentals.Anyone fi shing or angling in • British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. And keep in mind, on Mike Lake, no powerboats are allowed.

Some interesting notes about Golden Ears Provincial Park:

The park was named • after the twin peaks of Mount Blanshard near the peak’s western boundary. Originally part of Garibaldi Provincial Park, the establishment of Golden Ears in 1927 recognized the almost-impenetrable mountain barrier between the two areas.Human activity in Golden • Ears, both past and present, has been confi ned to the Alouette Valley in the south of the park. In the 1920s, the forested slopes became the site of B.C.’s greatest railroad logging operation, until a disastrous fi re swept through the valley in 1931.

The lake and its forested surroundings were also the traditional hunting and fi shing grounds for the Douglas-Lillooet (Interior Salish) and Katzie (Coast Salish) First Nations peoples. The park represents the • coastal western hemlock biogeoclimatic zone and is characterized by a second-growth forest of western hemlock, western red cedar and Douglas fi r. A series of sphagnum bogs are at the south end of Alouette Lake. The park’s lush plant growth, • numerous waterways, and mountainous terrain provide habitat to beaver, deer, black bear, and mountain goat.

Located nearby in northern Mission, Rolley Lake Provincial Park is also quick to fi ll up — catching much of the overfl ow from Golden Ears. Rolley Lake offers 64 vehicle-accessible camp-sites and is open from April 1 to Thanksgiving Monday, the second Monday in October.

Outside of those months, people can still use the trails, but no camping is allowed.

Rolley Lake campground has fl ush toilets and hot showers. Campfi res are allowed in provided fi re rings only, unless a fi re ban is in place, and fi rewood may be purchased.

The vehicle-accessible regular season camping fee is $30 per night. The seniors’ rate is $15 per couple per night.

Campsite reservations are accepted and fi rst-come, fi rst-serve sites are also available. For reservation information, see the Golden Ears Provincial Park listing. To access the park, take Dewdney Trunk Road east into

Mission, then turn left on Bell Road.

Less than an hour’s drive from Vancouver, Rolley Lake Provincial Park provides a quick escape from urban life.

To get there from Vancouver, take Lougheed Highway (Hwy. 7) to Maple Ridge and turn north at 287th Street. Turn right on to Dewdney Trunk Road and then turn left on to Bell Street and drive north to the park.

The park is a predominately fl at, wilderness area blanketed with tall, second-growth conifers. The small, warm-water lake provides opportunities for cycling, swimming, hiking, fi shing, and canoeing. Sixty-four campsites are nestled in the trees just minutes from the lakeshore.

Some interesting notes:Rolley Lake was named • after newlyweds, James and Fanny Rolley who fi rst homesteaded on its shores in 1888 and stayed for 10

years. In the early 1900s, the lake was used as a holding pond for shingle bolts (short logs).A wooden fl ume sped the • bolts fi ve kilometres downhill to the Stoltze mill at nearby Ruskin. In the early 1930s, the park area supported a small Japanese-Canadian hand logging operation. If you look closely within the surrounding second growth forest, you may fi nd some of the wooden fl umes used to fl oat the bolts, or a plank road of the latter logging days. This area was once used • by the Sto:lo of the Coast Salish Nation. The west end of Rolley Lake has a bog with sedges, coarse grasses, and other aquatic vegetation. The park provides habitat for Douglas squirrel, blacktail deer, and pileated woodpecker. Rolley Lake is stocked with coastal cutthroat trout and rainbow trout.

“Off pretty much every road from Dewdney Trunk up to Mission, there’s something going on,” says Troy Scott.

Scott says there’s something for every mountain biker, from those who prefer serene fl at rides to those who love steep downhill tracks with lots of jumps.

“It’s anything from riding on the dikes to expert trails to jumping,” he said.

“There are a lot of balanced trails, jump trails – all that sort of thing.”

A popular destination for bikingMaple Ridge Cycle owner Troy Scott says it isn’t hard to fi nd good trails locally.

The trails in Golden Ears Provincial Park, in particular, offer a wide range of options for people of all skill levels. The park features everything from singletrack to doubletrack to wide paved or gravel roads. There are steep paths that will challenge experienced riders, but there are also easy ways down for those who are just getting started or prefer watching the scenery to speeding down hills.

“It’s no different than skiing,” Scott said. “You can go to the top, enjoy the view, have lunch and take one of the smooth switchbacks down.”

For beginning riders, the Mike Lake area inside the park has proven to be a great place to learn.

“Mike Lake, that’s quite popular,” Scott said. “There are a lot of trails that branch off of that.”

Expert riders can check out The Woodlot near the Mission border, which is world-renowned for its trails.

“Some of the best trail-builders in the world do a lot of work there,” Scott said.

He added that mountain biking can be a pretty easy sport to learn, and a wide variety of beginner-friendly trails helps to make it even simpler to pick up.

“The biggest thing is just getting exposure to it,” he said.

One of the top ways to get going is just to drop into one of the local bike shops and talk with the staff to see what equipment and trails are best suited to your needs.

“Get into the shop and talk to the people,” he said. “They’ll put you in the type of bike for what you want to do.”

He said the area’s wide variety of trails makes it easy to start slow and gradually gain skill and experience. Scott says you can work your way up to the toughest ones if that’s what you want to do, but there are also enough easy trails to keep those who prefer a simpler ride happy for a long time.

“There’s something for everyone,” Scott said. “The sky’s the limit.”

Bingo, gaming getting a new buildingAn evening of entertainment is available at the Haney Bingo Plex on 224th Street for anyone who likes the bright lights of the slot machines, bingo games and betting on horse races.

The building is located in Maple Ridge’s downtown, across from Haney Place Mall with plenty of convenient parking at the back.

But plans are afoot for a new home on Lougheed Highway at 227th Street.

Great Canadian Gaming Corp. is building a new Maple Ridge Community Gaming Centre in what will be a new intersection in the downtown.

Part of the deal agreed to between Great Canadian and the District of Maple Ridge was extending 227th Street northward to Lougheed Highway, thus providing another link between the downtown and homes below.

Preparation work for that has been done and only construction of the new $16-million gaming centre remains.

A Construction start date though won’t be announced until the fall, after the company launches a project in Abbotsford.

“Everything is still going as planned,” said Great Canadian spokesman Howard Blank.

Great Canadian plans on building a 2,550-sq.-metre complex with a restaurant, a green roof and outdoor patio.

The new gaming centre, operated in partnership with the Ridge Meadows Bingo Association, will have 150 slot machines, more than the current Haney Bingo Plex on 224th Street. The district gets 10 per cent of the revenue from the slot machines.

Pitt Meadows AirportDid you know that Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is the third largest airport in the Lower Mainland and is the new gateway to Metro Vancouver?

Aside from booking a fl ight-seeing tour or skydiving experience, it’s a great place to walk on the dikes, watch the planes take-off and land, or count the colourful parachutes as they fl oat back down and land in the surrounding fi elds.

Hungry? The Runway Café, located inside the terminal, has a menu that will please the entire family.

For the pilots out there, Pitt Meadows airport has a full-service Nav Canada control tower, parallel and crosswind runways, waterdrome facilities, and fueling service for most types of aircraft.

Flight SeeLooking for a new way to experience B.C.? Viewing it from

the air might be just the thing. Chris Georgas, the owner and operator of Pacifi c Rim Aviation, said his company, which fl ies out of the Pitt Meadows airport, offers a wide variety of aerial sightseeing or “fl ightseeing” trips.

Some of their prominent trips include one from Pemberton to Whistler, one from Sechelt to Powell River, one over to Nanaimo and one up the Fraser Valley to Hope.

“We fl y around the local universe here,” Georgas said.

“On an average fl ight, we go for about one and a half hours.”

Georgas said the company’s planes are perfect for fl ightseeing, as their design allows passengers to get an unparalleled view of the ground below.

“It’s great visibility,” he said. “We fl y high-wing aircraft, so the wing’s up above their heads. It’s perfect for photos.”

Their flightseeing trips also span a wide variety of

heights, so passengers can see everything from mountaintops to forests and rivers. The aircraft can hold up to three passengers.

“The planes can fl y at all altitudes, so you get a great view of the Lower Mainland and the local mountains,” Georgas said.

Pacifi c Rim mostly focuses on pilot training and charter services, but Georgas said fl ightseeing has become a growing part of their business thanks to its increasing popularity.

Pacifi c SkydiversPacifi c Skydivers offers a fi rst-class skydive experience in a fun and safety-oriented environment. See Vancouver and beyond as you tandem skydive from 10,000 feet. Experienced jumpers are also welcome. Located at Pitt Meadows Airport, Pacifi c Skydivers is open 7 days a week. Reservations are required.

For one, head over to Davison’s Pool to go swimming or tubing for the day. Located off Fern Crescent at about 236th Street in the Alouette River, Davison’s Pool is a popular place in Maple Ridge to hang out during the summer as people sun bathe and relax on the hot sun-warmed rocks.

That’s not the only place to fi nd cool water. Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park, in the day-use area, is an old standby, as is Whonnock Lake on 112th Avenue in east Maple Ridge.

Looking for an outdoor pool? Pitt Meadows has two of them. Hammond Outdoor Pool, opens July 1, at 206th Street and Westfi eld Avenue, seven days a week starting at 12:30 p.m. Harris Outdoor Pool, opens July 1 at 12460 Harris Road, on the same schedule as Hammond Outdoor Pool.

Farther east, in Mission, there’s Hayward Lake near the Ruskin Dam.

Don’t like swimming? How about heading over to the library, suggests Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows.

You also can check out the spray parks in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The Kinsmen spray park and outdoor swimming pool is located at Maple Ridge Park and is open to the public on a weather permitting, seasonal basis. The Pitt Meadows spray park is near the outdoor pool,

Dogs also have a tough time in the heat. Do you need somewhere to take your dog to cool off? In Golden Ears Provincial Park you can let your dog off-leash in either the North Beach day-use area near Gold Creek or the Alouette day-use area between the boat launch and the canoe rental shop.
