Even before I arrived to St. Joseph Parish in 2013 as the associate pastor, I started interacting with Angie Cevallos, our parish Administrative Assistant. Since then, I have been grateful for the professionalism and generosity with which she does her job. Angie, thank you for 11 years of Christian commitment. You will be missed.

Time has a way of getting away from us. It is difficult to believe that I have been working at St. Joseph for the past 11 years. When I was hired in 2005, the rectory lacked the technology needed to keep up with today’s ever-changing world. There was also a need for a bilingual employee to assist the growing Hispanic community.

I was originally hired to run the Archdiocese’s mandated Protecting God’s Children Program as well as to update the technology to allow for the purchase of much needed software for the parish. Up until that time, most of the reports were done manually and were transmitted to the archdiocese via postal service. Today 95% of the work we do is done through the use of computers and using a sophisticated software program to maintain our parish census. We’ve come a long way and I’m happy to say that I was part of implementing those changes.

As the pastor/leadership of the parish changed, my job evolved into many different roles and responsibilities.

Working at the rectory has provided a better understanding of the operations/functions at the parish and archdiocesan level. It has also given me the opportunity to meet many parishioners whom otherwise I would not have known.

As this journey ends and I start my next chapter, I look forward to having the extra time to do the things that my husband, Ruben, and I enjoy. We hope to be traveling more often and have the opportunity to spend more time with our youngest grandchildren before they head off to college.

El tiempo tiene una manera de alejarse de nosotros. Es difícil creer que he estado trabajando en San José durante los últimos 11 años. Cuando fui contratada en 2005, la rectoría no tenia la tecnología

necesaria para mantener el ritmo de hoy. También se necesitaba un empleado bilingüe para ayudar a la creciente comunidad hispana. Yo fui contratada originalmente para ejecutar el programa Arquidiocesano Proteger los Niños de Dios así como para actualizar la tecnología para permitir la compra de software tan necesario para la parroquia. Hasta ese momento, la mayoría de los informes se realizaban manualmente y se transmitieron a la arquidiócesis a través del servicio postal. En la actualidad, el 95% del trabajo que

hacemos se realiza mediante el uso de computadoras y utilizando un programa de software sofisticado para mantener nuestro censo parroquial. Hemos recorrido un largo camino y me siento feliz de decir que yo fui parte de aplicar esos cambios.

Con los cambios de párrocos y el liderazgo de la parroquia, mi trabajo ha evolucionado en diferentes roles y responsabilidades.

Trabajando en la parroquia ha facilitado una mejor comprensión de las funciones en el nivel parroquial y diocesana. También me dio la oportunidad de conocer a muchos feligreses que de lo contrario no habría conocido.

Al terminar esta jornada, empiezo mi próximo capítulo, espero tener el tiempo extra para hacer las cosas que mi esposo, Rubén, y yo disfrutamos. Esperamos poder viajar más a menudo y tener la oportunidad de pasar mas tiempo con nuestros nietos

antes de que se vayan para la universidad.

Knights of Columbus’ Year-End Activities

Our Lady of the Rosary Council is concluding its fraternal year and announcing the following events. In May the Council donated $2,000 to the St. Joseph School Scholarship Fund and $200 to Lake County Aid to Women.

In June, the Council is going to honor deceased brother Knights on Father’s Day weekend at the 5 p.m. mass on June 18th. A mass intention has been provided and families of departed Knights are invited to attend.

Finally, officers for the next fraternal year will be installed after a 7 p.m. mass on Wednesday, June 22nd. Refreshments will be served in the Community Room immediately following the installation.

Reading Boot Camp at St. Joseph St. Joseph faculty spent two days last week with

Sean Taylor, the Dyslexic Reading Sage, for Reading Boot Camp training. The days were filled with fast-paced teaching and learning situations. Sean taught us the handicraft of finger weaving Arizona scarves which we have renamed Illinois Summer Scarves.

Our students successfully completed one week of Reading Boot Camp. We started each day praising God as we learned the words to several Christian songs. Many students mastered making the scarves. Fun projects, songs, movement, and activities were mingled between the fluency and language arts lessons.

La facultad de San José paso dos días la semana pasada con Sean Taylor, el Sage de Disléxico Lecturas, para la formación de lecturas Boot Camp. Los días estaban llenos de vertiginosas situaciones de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Sean nos enseñó la artesanía del dedo de tejer bufandas de Arizona que hemos nombrado Bufandas de Verano de Illinois.

Nuestros estudiantes terminaron satisfactoriamente una semana de lectura Boot Camp. Comenzamos cada día alabando a Dios como nosotros aprendimos las palabras a varias canciones cristianas. Muchos estudiantes dominaron el arte de hacer pañuelos. Proyectos divertidos, canciones, movimientos y actividades se mezclaban entre la fluidez y lecciones de artes del lenguaje.
