Nugget Norm Our Gold Panner/Prospector ...at Fort Steele Heritage Town

This year’s Sam Steel Days is a weekend that you will remember for a long time.

Kicking off with a pancake breakfast, the events start on Thurs-

day, June 14 and con-tinuing until the eve-ning of June 17, there is literally something for everyone. First off, there is the food. The scrumptious Taste of

Cranbrook that carries through the festivities and look out for the E.K. Realty Corral Barbecue and the Old Fashioned Picnic in the Park along with numer-

ous pancake breakfasts sponsored by local businesses.

The Sam Steele Boc-ce Tournament is a pe-rennial favourite and of course, the Balls of

Steele ball tournament are a great opportunity to get the family out for some fun and sports. The KEYSA soccer tournament promises to showcase some of the best and fastest play-ers in the region and the Rocky Mountain Lumberjack Show will make you want to put on the plaid, grab an axe and hit the forest. And if you enjoy your outdoor sports, don’t miss the Long Drive Competition held at Wildstone or the Fre-eride/Street Riding Competition where competitors do some amazing stunts that are guaranteed to generate “oohs and aahs.”

Speaking of sports, the Strongman Clas-sic will be taking place right in the middle of downtown, with some of the strongest men in the region and beyond trying to out-lift, out-pull and out-do their competition.

There are other com-petitions for those not quite as sports-orient-ed.

The Weiner Dog Races offer up a ton of laughs as these pint-sized athletes try to

outdo each other–or at least be the rst to get a treat. If treats are what you are after, you have to sign up for the Cupcake Eating Com-petition, held at Spirit Square. For those who like their competition with a little atmosphere and a comfortable chair, don’t miss the Sam Steele Poker Classic held at the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino.

There will be an arts

and crafts show and sale if you are looking for that perfect piece of art for the home or for a gift and the Cranbrook Fire ghters Fishing Clinic which will give you all the informa-tion you need to catch a huge one this season.

Bring the whole fam-ily down to Sam Steele Days this year and you’ll have great mem-ories that will last until next year’s festivities.

There is plenty to see and do during Sam Steel Days 2012

There was plenty of high- ying fun at last year’s Freeride/ Street Riding competition where partici-pants de ed gravity (and in some case, common sense) to provide thrills to the crowd.

Have you done your sweet gesture today?

You’re going to see something new during this year’s Sam Steele Days Parade: A group of men wearing bright red, high-heeled shoes walking to raise mon-ey for the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre.

The men will be tak-ing part in Cranbrook’s rst-ever Walk a Mile

in Her Shoes: The In-ternational March to Stop Rape, Sexual As-sault and Gender Vio-lence.

“We sometimes for-get the valuable con-tributions men are making to stop vio-lence against women,” said Roberta Rodgers, with the Friends of the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre. “This gives them the oppor-tunity to declare where

they stand about gender violence.”

And stand they will—and hobble, strut and walk—in men’s-sized shoes provided espe-cially for the occasion, down the 1.2-mile Sam Steele Days parade route on June 16.

“We special-order the shoes before the walk,” Rodgers said. “The heels aren’t ri-diculously high, but they’re high enough to challenge most people, men or women.”

Walk a Mile In Her Shoes started in 2001 in California, and has spread to many com-munities across North America. Proceeds from every walk must go to a community or-ganization that works to reduce violence against women. The

Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre, under the auspices of Com-munity Connections of Southeast BC, is just such an organization.

“This is a fundraiser for the centre,” Rod-gers said. “Our goal is to sign up as many men to walk the mile, and to inspire those men to form teams, col-lect pledges and enjoy themselves on parade day.

“After they complete the parade, they’ll re-ceive a card acknowl-edging that they did, indeed, walk a mile in

someone else’s shoes.”The Friends are now

approaching businesses and organizations to sign up walkers.

Walkers can also reg-ister online at www.FriendsoftheWomen-sCentre.com.

“We’re also looking for some sort of pa-

rade vehicle so the men can take a few breaks if their blisters get too big,” Rodgers said.

Keeping in the spirit of Sam Steele Days, the group is seeking horse-

drawn conveyance rst. “It doesn’t have to be a big carriage,” Rodgers said.

“If anyone has a car-riage and horses—or even a bicycle rick-shaw—and would like to get involved, we urge them to contact us as soon as possible,” Rodgers said. “We are putting the event to-gether right now so there is still time for us to make our part of the parade fun, evocative and low-impact.”

To request a pledge package, visit www.FriendsoftheWomen-

sCentre.com or call 250-489-0174.

To volunteer, to of-fer your low-impact transport, or to nd out more, call 250-426-8588.

As for men who might be shy about walking in heels or collecting pledges, Rodgers had a word of advice: “Ask your friends how much they would pay to see you walk in heels,” she said. “How can they re-sist pledging when you put it like that?”

OK then, this may not be the prettiest picture ever printed in this newspaper, but it’s for a good cause. At this year’s Sam Steele Days Parade, a group of men will be donning red high-heeled shoes to raise funds for the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre. Come out and cheer these brave souls and chip in for the resource centre.

The 2012 Sam Steele Days Balls of Steele is shaping up to be another great event! The organiz-ing committee has worked very hard on all the details for this year’s event.

The Sam Steele Days Ball Tourna-ment is the largest slo-pitch tournament in the Kootenays and one of the largest in BC. The tournament is sanctioned by NSA Canada and is a pro-vincial quali er in 3 divisions. This year the tournament runs from Friday, June 15 to Sunday, June 17, 2012 in Cranbrook, BC.

For over 15 years , the ball tournament has grown and be-come one of the best ball tournaments in Western Canada. In

past years we have run Men’s, Woman’s and Mixed divisions but we have found that the majority of our teams play mixed. We will

be continuing with the all mixed format in-troduced in 2011 with three divisions: Com-petitive C, Mixed D/E and Mixed Fun.

Mixed Competitive: There will be $2000 in cash prizing plus NSA

prizes! If you play in a league and win most of your games then this division is for you.

Mixed Rec: There

are a ton of NSA priz-es for teams in this di-vision. If you play in a league and are pretty OK then this is the di-vision for you.

Mixed FUN: Super cool NSA prizes plus your registration fee

is less. If cold bev-ies are more important than winning and you are new to the game then this is the divi-sion for you.

The Sam Steele Days Balls of Steele Organizing Commit-tee is made up of JCI Kootenay members who love our commu-nity and having a good time. JCI Kootenay is a group of young people between the ages of 19 and 40 who participate in projects locally, regionally and around the world. We view hosting the ball and bocce tour-naments during Sam Steele Days as a great way of giving back to our community.

Our goal is to con-tinually improve the event to ensure you and your entire team have an amazing and memorable week-end.

The Sam Steele Poker Classic held at the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino is the place to be for all poker afficianados. If you want to go down and catch the action, it is of course necessary to know which hands beat which.

A poker hand always consists of five cards. Even though in some variants you may have more than five cards to choose from, you se-lect the five cards that make the best hand, and for the purpose of comparing hands any other cards are irrel-evant.

The ranking of hands from high to low in

standard poker is as follows.

Straight FlushFive consecutive

cards of the same suit. Ace can be counted as high to make the high-est type of Straight Flush, which is A-K-Q-J-10 of a suit, sometimes known as a Royal Flush. Ace can be low to make (5-4-3-2-A), but not high and low at the same time (for example 2-A-K-Q-J is not valid).

Four of a KindFour cards of the

same rank and one other card, such as 9-9-9-9-Q. Four of a kind are sometimes known as quads or in some non-English speaking countries as

a poker. The odd card - the queen in the ex-ample - is called the kicker.

Full HouseThree cards of the

same rank plus a pair of cards of another rank, such as 5-5-5-K-K, which would be de-scribed as “fives full of kings”. A full house is sometimes known as a boat.

FlushA ush consists of

ve cards of the same suit (not all consecu-tive, otherwise it would be a straight ush).

StraightFive cards of con-

secutive ranks, not all of the same suit. The highest is A-K-Q-J-10 and an Ace can instead be counted as

low to make the low-est straight 5-4-3-2-A, which is sometimes called a wheel. An Ace cannot be in the inte-rior of a straight - for example 4-3-2-A-K is

not a straight. Three of a KindThree cards of the

same rank and two cards of different ranks - for example 7-7-7-10-6. This is sometimes

known as a triplet or trips.

Two PairTwo cards of one rank,

two cards of a second rank and one card of a third rank (the kicker) - for example J-J-3-3-8.

PairTwo cards of equal

rank and three cards of different ranks - for example Q-Q-A-8-7.

NothingA hand which does

not fit any of the cat-egories above, com-monly known as High Card or sometimes No Pair. That is: five cards of different ranks, not all consecutive and not all the same suit.

Any hand of a higher type beats any hand of a lower type. When comparing two hands of the same type, the ranking is determined by the ranks of the individual cards. The most numerous rank of cards in each hand (the quad, the triplet in a full house or trips, otherwise the pair if any) is compared first; if these are equal, any less numerous ranks are compared. When two ranks are equally numerous, the high-est-ranking cards are compared before the others.

Note that in standard poker the four suits are all equal, and that poker hands consist of five cards only. There-fore if two players can make five-card hands that are equal apart from the suits of the cards, there is a tie and if necessary they share the winnings equally.
