Curb in 1974, there was only one chart and 102 Billboard reporters. "It was easy to reach people," he says. "There weren't many labels so there weren't a lot of people calling." He operated by four rules: "I only work records I believe in. I won't lie to you. I help others win at all costs. I'll never ruin a relationship over a record." Explaining the last two, Svendsen told clients he would recommend a record over theirs if it was the right thing to do, and he refused to denigrate, demean or behave angrily. "As a Christian, I just couldn't do that," he says. "If they can't add my record it doesn't mean I'm justified in talking ugly." Successes included introducing himself to a new artist no one was talking to at CRS. Svendsen told the singer that his song was a future No. 1. He eventually received a plaque for "Achy Breaky Heart" from Billy Ray Cyrus with the note, "You said it first." Other notable moments included playing a role in getting LeAnn Rimes to Curb and being an early champion of Blake Shelton's "Austin." He also called Curb's Dick Whitehouse after seeing a young Tim McGraw perform. McGraw's first album with the label had stiffed, but Svendsen saw a star in the making. "Dick said they

weren't sure about re-signing Tim and I told him I'd send him a check for $100,000 to buy out the contract." A few days later, McGraw's management team told Svendsen the label was re-upping McGraw. He got a plaque on that occasion as well. Mike

Curb's note thanked him "for helping me not make the biggest mistake of my career." In the late '70s, Svendsen spearheaded a world premiere for the film Every Which Way But Loose starring Clint Eastwood. Attending a studio meeting after hearing the soundtrack, he dismissed other marketing ideas. "Look, Country radio will blow this off the planet and make this the biggest movie of his career," he recalls saying. "They were like, 'Who is this guy?'" His bravado won the day, and he quickly partnered with eventual MCA/Nashville Chairman Bruce Hinton in an independent promotion company that staged a radio fly-in to Dallas. "I had a $1 million budget to spend on 102 stations," he says. Debuting the soundtrack's first single, Eddie Rabbitt's title

track, at No. 18, the event paved the way for a hit movie and made Hinton-Svendsen a hot promo company. Their partnership lasted almost seven years. "We dressed like gentlemen and we spoke like gentlemen," Svendsen says. "There were years we had a No. 1 record every week." Svendsen counts the ability to hear a hit as the lynchpin of his success. "When other kids were outside throwing baseballs, I was in my room listening to stacks of 45s," he says. Years later, he was confident enough in a potential single that he told then-BNA promotion exec Tom Baldrica he'd work it for double his normal fee if it hit No. 1. If it didn't, the label would owe him nothing. "After I'd taken his money six times, he wouldn't play that game with me anymore." Not infallible, Svendsen made a few wrong choices that resulted in "only" a top five or top 10. "Work hard and treat people

fairly," he says of his approach. "I've done what I've loved and feel like I've made a contribution." This week's is his last chart-topper, "Wasted Time" by Keith Urban. Svendsen has worked all of Urban's No. 1s. Congratulate him here. –Chuck Aly

Chart Chat Congrats to Keith Urban, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman, Shane Allen and the Capitol promotion staff on the No. 1 ascension of "Wasted Time." The song is the third chart-topper from Urban's current album Ripcord. And kudos to Allen and the Columbia promo team on landing 62 adds for Maren Morris' "80s Mercedes," topping this week's board.

business, you never want to follow Big & Rich.” He celebrated the amazing experiences over 38 years in radio that allowed him to see artists in intimate and exclusive settings. “We are blessed in this room to see and be part of that,” he said. “I am so thankful to have been part of it for my whole life.” He also reflected on the ability to use radio to do good. “In the end, that lives on far beyond this room, and country music has allowed

KQFC/Boise’s afternooner Rick Daniels discusses his most influential music:1. Dave Matthews Band’s Under The Table And Dreaming: This introduced me to what was new in the ‘90s, but had a lot of the “old” inspirations of jazz, southern rock and country. A very diverse band with so many talents. As a teen, that music taught me to be more open minded to new things. 2. Phish’s Billy Breathes: Just an awesome

album front to back, still play it often. Pure musical genius. 3. Eric Church’s Chief: The entire album is a terrific road trip soundtrack. 4. Live’s Throwing Copper: Listen to it front to back. Enough said. 5. Celine Dion: I might get some flack for this, but anything by Celine Dion. My late grandmother player her a lot after school and I still have fond memories of her when Celine is played somewhere.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything Lady Gaga.• Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Vince Gill with Little Big Town, “Take Me Down.” Excellent vocals, rhythm and guitar work.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Taylor Swift’s albums 1989 and Red.Reach Daniels here.

me to do this for my entire life. So thank you for all the incredible moments, the journey, the belief and the faith in me.” Jim Slone: “I’m probably the oldest guy in the room,” said the former KIIM/Tucson (among others) owner following his introduction by children Mary Wambach and Jamie Slone.

“I’ve been in radio 61 years.” During his emotional speech, Slone recounted some of his favorite stories from the highlights of his career, including the time then-KNIX/Phoenix owner Buck Owens almost bought KIIM/Tucson out from under him, but didn’t because Slone told him, “friends don’t do friends that way.” He finished with his favorite quote from Roy Rogers: “Until we meet again, may the good Lord take a liking to you.” Kerby Confer: Introduced by his Forever

Media partner Donald Alt, the Keymarket Communications founder began, “I got this email from a friend yesterday saying, ‘Congratulations on your indictment into the Country Radio Hall of Fame.’ ... I will say it is a pleasure to be indicted here tonight.” Confer recalled the first Country station he bought in his home town of Williamsport, PA and, though he’s owned and launched hundreds of Country stations since, lamented that he was never on the air on one. “I’m a country music DJ wannabe who never got to be,” he said. He referred to radio as the only medium that can truly connect through the internet, and said instead of radio’s predicted death at the internet’s hands, the technology is actually helping reinvent the medium. He also dedicated his award to 30-year WBVR/Bowling Green, KY

morning co-host Scooter Davis, who is battling terminal cancer. “I just want to say I love you, man ... you, not me, embody the spirit that this award is intended to honor.” Mike & Dana Schuff: “I was not sure I could be here tonight,” Dana said, acknowledging the short month that had passed since partner and husband Mike’s unexpected death. “I knew that Michael would be really ticked off at me if I didn’t come, because he loved this.” Recounting how the former Midland, TX morning team were paired on air and eventually fell in love, she said Mike compared their morning show to a cookie. “He said, ‘I’ll take a bite, I’ll pass it to you and you take a bite and pass it back,’” she remembered. “So I’m here tonight because Tommy [Vascocu, former owner/GM] showed me how big the cookie could be, and Michael always shared it with me.” Mick Anselmo: Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton introduced the former CBS Radio/Minneapolis SVP/MM, who said, “I didn’t ever think of myself as one who goes in the hall, and I’m certainly appreciative.” Anselmo used his time to tell stories demonstrating that his work was never work, and that it was people in his path who made the difference. “Every great leader knows it’s not about you, it’s about the team that you have in back of you,” he said. He talked about the company presidents, jocks, PDs and promotions staffers he’d worked with throughout the years. “I’m honored to take my place in the hall,” he said. “And I will continue

to be a rabid fan of country music and Country radio.” Lisa Dent: “It’s ‘Different For Girls’ ... working in Country radio,” quipped Capitol’s Dierks Bentley while introducing the WUSN/Chicago morning host. Bentley told of meeting a listener

Dent helped get into foster care some 22 years earlier. Said Dent in response, “That does tell you about the connection we make. Not only with the people we love in the industry, not only with the artists, but with the audience. That’s why we’re here. That’s why we do what we do.” She thanked her morning partner Ray Stevens and coworkers before adding, “Most of all I thank Country radio for giving me a platform to help the charities I so believe in to help kids and help people fight cancer and

Alzheimer’s, and especially to help dogs and cats.” She dedicated the award to her 14-year-old son Liam, who she said “has never woken up and seen me in the morning.” President’s Award: Former WKIS/Miami GSM Carole Bowen began with a quote from Muhammad Ali. “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” she said. She recalled her career start as an accountant and the time she was sent to West Virginia to count coal bins for six months. “It was a pivotal tipping point in my career path,

realizing I was not cut out to be a coal miner’s auditor.” Bowen said there are two pillars of successful radio – the ratings pillar and the revenue pillar. “Or as some call it, the dark side,” she joked of her path. “The Country radio industry has been my community for over 30 fun-filled years,” she said. “I will always be proud to say I was one of you.” Career Achievement: MCA’s Josh Turner performed a medley of Randy Travis hits including “Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart,” “Three Wooden Crosses,” Diggin’ Up Bones,” “A Man Ain’t Made Of Stone” and “Forever And Ever, Amen.” “One of the best things to have in life is a hero,” said Turner. “I don’t know if I’d be here tonight if it weren’t for Randy Travis.” A video tribute followed, with commentary on Travis and his career from Turner, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood and Kristin Chenoweth. Still recovering from the 2013 stroke that left him unable to speak, Travis took the stage to a standing ovation and was able to say thank you before wife Mary Davis-Travis continued on his behalf. “Randy’s story is one of redemption,” she said to a crowd still on its feet. Quoting Aldous Huxley she said, “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. And I have a hard time arguing that because I’ve known the music and I’ve known the silence, and there’s expression still there, even in the silence, with the music.”
