Getting Started With Pine

• To check your E-Mail or send a message: Login to the appropriate server. Type pine at the prompt. The following menu will appear:

? HELP - Get help using Pine

C COMPOSE MESSAGE - Compose and send/post a message

I FOLDER INDEX - View messages in current folder

L FOLDER LIST - Select a folder OR news group to view

A ADDRESS BOOK - Update address book

S SETUP - Configure or update Pine

Q QUIT - Exit the Pine program

Main Menu Options

• Status line - at top defines number of new messages.

• Menu Items: Compose Message - create and send a new message Folder Index - Summary of messages in current folder. Folder List - A list of all your message folders. Address Book: Personal collection of addresses and

aliases. Setup: Voluminous list of configurations for PINE

features.


Folder List

• A list of all your message folders.

• The 'current' one is highlighted.

• Select another folder w/ cursor (arrow) keys and <RETURN>.

• Multiple folder collections use <RETURN> to expand.

•Select 'I' from the Main menu:

Reading Messages

• Status line at top shows number of messages and current pointer.

Message 1 of 29

• A list is displayed with the message descriptors: Status of the message - N = New Message number for easy reference. Sender of the message. Size of the message in characters. Subject of the message

• To read a message: Move the cursor to the desired message (arrow keys). Press <RETURN> (or V for view). The message header and the body are displayed.

Reading Mail (Con’t)

• Selected PINE commands are listed at the bottom of the screen.

• To return to the Main Menu simply type 'i'.

• To view the next message type 'n'.


Forwarding a Message

• To route a message to another person use the 'f' key. A message header will appear: Type address of recipient in the TO: field. Type any Cc recipients. Subject is already inserted but may be changed Message text area is available for added

comments.

Create Address Book Entry

• Select Address Book (a) from the Main Menu

• Select AddNew (a) from the menu

• Complete each requested entry (terminating each with a <RETURN>


Create a Folder

• Select List Folders (l) from Main Menu. A list of existing folders is displayed

• Select Add (a) from Folder Menu

• Define a name for the folder.

• Use the Save option while reading mail to select a folder to store mail messages.
