• The exchange of plants, animals and diseases between the Old World (Europe) and the New World (Americas)

What were the causes of the Columbian Exchange?

• Europeans crossing the Atlantic Ocean to create new settlements in the New World.

What were the effects of the Columbian Exchange?

• Different foods• Exchange of foods, animals and plants

created better lives• Diets change for the better = longer

life expectancy• Economics

• Ranching, cotton and coffee would not be possible

• Native Americans did not have any natural resistance to European diseases.

• Smallpox, measles, influenza, and malaria killed millions.

Effects on Europeans• Imagine Italian food with no tomatoes!
