A WORD FROMTHE EDITORS

Hi Lemmings,

Previous Jump magazines were extremely successful and are huge part of what makes our guild stand out. Since these issues the Lemmings of the Light have gone through many different experiences. We have experienced the rise of a new Boss Lady, the implementation of a multigame community and many exciting achievements. There is also great anticipation of new experiences to come such as the new Mist of Pandaria expansion and many more events.

Therefore, it is the perfect time to share these moments with the Jump, Issue 3! In this issue we have expanded to make the biggest and best Jump yet with contributions from many Lem-mings.

We hope you enjoy reading the exciting articles such as how we worked together to make two Legendary Lemmings (pg. 14), take a look back over previous social events (pg. 26; 28) and gain an insight into other games Lemmings play together. Finally, make sure you check out our two contests (pg. 71 and 76) for a chance to win a prize!

Have fun!

With the end of Cataclysm in sight, and Mists of Pandaria before us, it is a good time to give an impression of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

The most distinctive feature of Cataclysm is perhaps the one we all tend to look over: the transformation of the world. Many lands have suffered quite a change. Some have been flooded, other have been shaken by volcanic activity. Together with these geographical changes, new quests lines have been brought to the “old continents”. This effectively made a lot of the old zones playable again with a completely new experience.

BY BUNKERS

Page 5: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

For the second time, new races were intro-duced: Worgen and Goblin. Let’s give them a closer look. Well, the Worgen at least. Goblins have become a horde race now, and thus merit no more attention than any other horde race: contempt.

The Worgen entered the game with their own starting zone: Gilneas. I had not realized that this was principally a Worgen only zone, so get-ting inside proved to be quite a challenge involv-ing a lot of paperwork, stamps, signatures and bribes. Once I finally arrived in Gilneas, I quickly found out that Worgen actually were a horde race (fur, fangs, tail…). With this conclusion, it was rather pointless to waste more time in there. However, given the trouble and resources spent to get in, I will give you an impression of the Worgen starting zone.

The zone has a very British feel to it (dark, gloomy ... oh yes, and top hats!). The phasing is very well done, but the consequence is that most players solo this part. The Worgen psyche seems to be one of rebellion and aggression, and I frankly doubt the official information given to me where King Greymane built the wall to keep foreigners out. But, no matter why the wall was built, it was a blessing to the alliance, and once Mists of Pandaria gets out, I will personally

campaign to get it restored to its former glory, keeping the furries safely at the other side.

As in every expansion, the level cap has been raised, tough this time only with 5 levels, up to level 85, with corresponding areas. This I found a bit “cheap”, since it limits the number of new zones required to level in. However, I guess the employees working at Blizzard compensat-ed this by the revamp of the old continent.

Besides the Worgen starting area, I spent quite some time leveling in the new zones. There are two “starting” zones, the usual recipe to avoid overcrowding at the launch of a new expansion. One of the zones, Vashj’ir, is com-pletely underwater (well, almost), and is by far the most original zone we have ever seen released. Finding your way there however, can be a bit challenging, since it is an actual full 3D zone with important stuff sometimes above or below you. The time I spent in there, looking for quest givers, items or mobs that were sup-posedly nearby sometimes drove me close to despair “Am I at the correct altitude, or does this mob has one massive respawn timer?”. For this reason, I actually preferred Mount Hyjal to quest in (the fact it has all these quest lines involving tiny innocent cuddly animals has nothing to do with it, I swear!).

Page 6: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

6

After the Mount Hyjal starting zone, I contin-ued on the epic task of averting certain doom to this world, brought upon by Deathwing. I passed through all the other zones, and had a lot of fun, but nothing compared to the part in Uldum when sand pygmies sold me for three coconuts.

If you say WoW, you say instances. This expansion set out with nine dungeons, to which five more were added later on. I had lots of fun playing instances (it always has been a part of the game I enjoy a lot), and I leveled my alts mainly by doing those instead of questing. There were some complaints from the healers though, who had to deal with the return of the dreaded “mana-management” (just try pro-nouncing it five times in a row, and you will un-derstand why all the healers are complaining).

The first extra instances are the troll ones, Zul’Gurub and Zul’Aman. Besides being re-vamps of older raid-instances, they failed in their set-up of providing players a link between the heroic 5-man dungeons and the raid-

instances. They were so difficult that players that did not already have raid gear found little pleasure in wiping them. I once spent five hours (yes, five!) clearing Zul’Gurub, suffering the ter-rible atmosphere created by the other puggers, only to disconnect after the fifth attempt on the end-boss and being kicked. Like most sensible people, I decided not to pug those instances anymore. With guild groups I could avoid all the drama and combine that with a decent time to finish the instance. And oh yes, the instances had trolls in them…

The final End of Time dungeons succeeded better: players could actually enter and gear up in them. I must admit I had a lot more fun in them compared to those troll ones. Yes, I even pugged them quite some times, and I survived those pugs with most of my mental capacities intact, and from time to time a satchel as a bribe for tanking them with complete strangers.

The nice people of Blizzard also introduced a way to personalize your equipment. One can now transmogrify equipment to look like some-

Page 7: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

7

thing else. This has on many occasions con-fused me: almost every day I think “What is this lowbie char doing in the party, time for a kick!” only to find out they are wearing transmogged equipment. The primal use of transmogging seems to be to look more fashionable (female players) or to produce the most tiny clothing possible (male players).

As a guild, we saw the addition of levels and achievements (and pets). Being quite active, we reached the max guild level quite easily. How-ever, many of the guild achievements came all by themselves, which in my opinion defeats the idea of an achievement, but OK…

Some of the other guild achievements had to be done (or redone) actively. I really liked the dungeon guild achievements. It gave me the perfect excuse to draft guild members in a party to go into the low level dungeons again. In one evening, we ran so many low level dungeons, we got the announcement we could not enter any more instances. On other evenings, we had so many Lemmings participating, we made

several 5-man groups and split up the achieve-ments. That way we ran all the TBC dungeons in one evening.

There are also guild achievements that require quite some effort by the entire guild. Us Lemmings decided to support Daz and Lleu with their respective legendaries quests. They counted as a guild achievements, and with Daz’s quest we also unlocked an additional pet. While certain parts of it fitted in our existing raids, it did require some effort and planning to kill a special boss and attend them week after week.

Overall I did enjoy the Cataclysm expansion, but I find it hard to compare to other expan-sions, since I joined the Lemmings just before it came out. By default, this means it was the very best expansion ever.

Now let’s see what those Panda’s will have in store.

A report brought to you by Mardoek, known from “Worgen: a warning” and nothing else.

Raiding in Lemmings is a unique experience. Most guilds have different approach-es, it’s either hardcore, or casual, however we believe in a third approach. We try to en-sure that the raiding experience is as fun as possible, and to make raiding accessible to every Lemming, we have a set of rules that were created by Wilgje and Neti just before Karazhan. This system has proved to be absolutely essential to our raiding, and has worked wonders. It is designed to bring the Lemmings closer together as a guild and a raiding team.

The invite list system we use is designed for one purpose only: to give each Lem-ming a chance to participate in our raids. Once your character meets the requirements for a certain invite list (this means meeting a certain minimal ilvl and having all your gear gemmed and enchanted) you can put yourself on the list. The members on the list then rotate, so if you weren’t able to join on one raid, you move over all the others that could come, giving you priority over them for the next raid. This way everyone has a fair chance to join the Lemming raids.

In no case should a Lemming have reservations to put his or her char on the list out of fear for “not having enough experience”. Wilgje once said “We leave no Lemming be-hind”. For us this is the core of Lemming raiding.

Raiding in Cataclysm: Preparing for the raids

''One does not simply walk into Mordor!''The same is true for entering a raid instance.

First of all the Lemmings needed a raid-group, composed of lvl 85 players, and having suf-ficient players for every different role, like tanks and healers (nobody talks about DPS anymore…). We gave everyone their time to level and get ready and then we made the first Cataclysm invite list.

Now the invite list, whilst it does guarantee that everyone has a fair chance of playing, it doesn’t guarantee that we will always have a balanced group, or the same line up. This means that we can have a raid on a boss on farm, and he may prove to be a difficult chal-lenge, maybe even unreachable at the moment.

However we do see all this as a challenge, a way to be more creative and a chance for people to step up and take the lead, or come up with ideas. Eventually, this means that most people will be experienced with the encoun-ters, and the raid leader is more of an organizer than a commander. Of course we don’t want to have everything on farm as soon as possible, where’s the fun in that? Having new people to a raid can be a pleasant change, especially if the boss has been downed many times.

So the whole guild will benefit in the long term. Of course all this is theory, so on to the action! Once we were ready to go… no raid boss in Azeroth was safe from our determina-tion!

BoT, BWD and TofT''So many to choose from!''

On 19 January 2011, the first Lemming raid in Cataclysm was set up, and it was an immedi-ate success! Magmaw got smoked. As always, initial progress was rather slow, but very soon, the Omnotron Defense system fell as well. Over the coming months, the raiders built up experi-ence and gear, and the progression in Black-wing Descent, Bastion of Twilight and Throne of the Four Winds picked up speed. It still took almost half a year of progression to go through the 3 different raid instances and the various bosses.

Some of the fights proved hard to conquer: The Omnotron defense system is a compli-cated fight, with essentially 4 mini bosses that each have their own set of abilities. It took a lot of practice and co-ordination to get it right, but we did eventually. Chimaeron was a tough one as well, he was a true challenge for our healers as he has the nasty habit of dropping everyone to 1 HP all the time. And of course Nefarion himself, was a rather challenging fight, lots of work for the healers again, and lots and lots of not standing in the fires.

Throne of the Four Winds, and interesting instance with no trash at all and only two boss-es. The Conclave seemed quite complicated at first but not a great challenge, but Al’Akir himself was a different case. His fight had a lot of proper positioning going around so it took a while to get that right.

And then we had Bastion of Twilight which proved to be quite difficult indeed. It only had 4 bosses but they were each a big challenge in

Page 11: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

11

themselves. Halfus was fairly easy compared to the others, we seemed to be stuck on Valiona and Theralion for ages. It was a demanding fight with a lot of tactics to follow for positioning. Same for Ascendant Council, in which again, there were 4 mini bosses, all with their own abilities so it took a while to get that right as well. Chog’all was admittedly a very challenging fight. Two phases, a lot of adds and even more fires not to stand in, careful positioning, careful planning of when and where to kill the adds, it is safe to say we really had to run for our money there.

Despite all that, the challenge is welcome and between the end of July and the beginning of June, all three T11 end bosses fell before the might of the Lemmings!

Firelands''Don't stand in the fire!''

So you thought Ragnaros died in the Molten Core? Well, Just like Nefarion, Ragnaros made his comeback in the Cataclysm raids. But before we could get a shot at him, several other, admittedly new, challenging and fun bosses had to be beaten.

First on the list was Shannox. This guy only shows himself after you kill a certain amount of trashmobs, a bit like in those kung-fu movies, where the bad big boss only gets off his seat after you kicked all his cronies onto a pile in the corner. It took us about 3 weeks of wiping on Shannox to get him down. Clearly a marked difference with the T11 raids, where the first bosses seemed designed to build confidence.

After Shannox, it took almost another 2 months for more progression.

We were stuck on Beth’tilac and Rhyolith for all this time, both of which tested our determi-nation. The Beth’tilac encounter consisted of basically trying to handle a truckload of adds, all of which were, you guessed it, spiders. Re-ally bad for anyone with a spider phobia.

Also Rhyolith, this guy (apart from the fact he sounds like Treebeard from Lord of the Rings) had an interesting encounter as well. It was very unpredictable as you would have volca-noes spawning in random places and you had to make him turn and walk over them by hitting a corresponding leg of his. It took us a lot of wipes to get these two encounters right, but then all of the sudden 2 new bosses went down in one night, and a third one, Baleroc (or Balrog for LotR fans again :P), a day later.

This allowed us to get working on new bosses, and it gave us a weekly boost in gear. A rough 2 weeks after that, Alysrazor and Staghelm fell to the Lemming power. Alysrazor is a particularly fun fight, especially for a fire mage since you get to fly in the air and do tre-mendous amounts of damage. It’s also fun on the ground with all the adds and all the different fires that need to be avoided. After all that we were set to read Ragnaros his last rites.

Ragnaros proved one tough opponent though, and it took us 3 months to finally get him to realize resistance was futile. In the meanwhile we tried different tactics and ap-proaches to this complex fight, and it seemed like every time we got close, we would do something wrong and start from scratch.

Page 12: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

12

This fight takes a great deal of co-ordination and well, performance to conquer. However, just when it was starting to feel annoying, we started going into phase 3 consistently, killing the adds in time, and finally on January 8th of 2012, we finally downed him! We had been wiping on him for such a long time, the feeling after downing him was euphoric, everyone was delighted, and after that we started repeating our success on almost every try.

Dragon Soul''Let's bring an end to the Destroyer of

Worlds!''The Lemmings had already started on

Dragon Soul, and even downed some bosses there, before having finished Ragnaros.

The Dragon Soul bosses proved relatively smooth progression wise, we even nicknamed the first boss Morchok, into Lootchok… until we met Ultraxion.

Ultraxion was a gear check gone out of control. And we Lemmings had a disadvantage here: we did not PUG the instance using LFR at least not until we cleared the corresponding wing of the raid, so we didn’t gear up as fast. This meant we got stuck at Ultraxion for about 2 months. The encounter had incredibly easy tactics, it consisted of standing on one spot and pushing a big button every now and then. However the damage taken and the damage needed were intense. Our healers and DPS re-ally had to push themselves. It did give us many wonderful “Pusha Da Buttonz!” from Rin.

Once we got past him, we proved the gear check to be overly severe by blowing up both Warmaster Blackhorn and Spine of Deathwing days after. These two fights were quite fun, Blackhorn’s fight meant we all had to defend Skyfire from some nasty attacks while dealing with a whole lot of adds. The fight was quite

complicated but surprisingly, Blackhorn went down incredibly fast.

Spine of Deathwing was another interesting fight, quite different from anything we had seen so far. It actually took place on Deathwing’s back, as he is flying in the air, and with care-ful manipulation of some adds, we blew off 3 pieces of his armor plating (and made him do a barrel roll!) and we downed him!

Madness of Deathwing himself took slightly longer, but even he went down relatively fast, within less than a month. We experimented with the tactics and the order of the platforms on this challenging but reachable fight. With Death-wing down, the Lemmings had killed the big baddy from Cataclysm, bringing an end to the terror threatening to destroy the world.

Further challengesDeathwing’s demise meant that the Lem-

mings had cleared every raid-instance of Cata-clysm. We keep making return trips to Death-wing, so every Lemming who wants can have a shot at him (and of course to show him who is the boss).

In order to keep our raids interesting, there are some harder challenges we are now setting our sights on. We try to get some achievements done, and even try our hand at defeating cer-tain raid-bosses on heroic difficulty. Further-more, we have all worked together to complete some pretty legendary achievements! Bulldaz and Lleu are now amongst our legendary Lem-mings having gotten their staff and daggers respectively, all with a great team effort of our guildies.

With Cataclysm ending, and our community being as strong as ever, our goals for the new expansion, and what we uphold as our core values have not changed since the days of our first raids. The Lemmings are ready for the new challenges in the mystical continent of Pandar-ia, and we will leave no Lemming behind!

Page 13: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

13

Page 14: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

With Cataclysm raiding, and to be specific, with the Firelands and Dragon Soul raids, two new legendary weapons were intro-duced. Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest and Fangs of the Father. First was an intellect staff mainly for DPS casters and the second were a set of daggers for rogues.

The Lemmings were presented with a challenge of course. Could we take it upon ourselves to help two guildies on their Leg-endary journey?

Well we weren’t gonna let the chance go! As the legendary staff could be used by numerous Lemmings, the officer team and guild leader had a hard choice to decide which would be the first Lemming to work on the quest line. They chose Bulldaz as he is a long standing member of the guild, an officer and no one had any doubts he would see this to the end. We have several Lemmings on later stages of the quest and hope to help them gain their legendar-ies in future.

We started working on the first Legendary, and Bulldaz was set to his quest! He had to collect 25 Eternal Embers, one from each boss, gather some crystals from the bosses and charge them up in special ways, kill an extra boss, gather 1000 seething cinders from the bosses again, and finally, the last collecting stage, 250 Smold-ering Essences. It was a very long quest indeed. However a lot of Lemmings were willing to help, even after we had fully cleared Fire-lands, we kept coming back every week, for months, until Bulldaz finally finished the quest!

We sometimes had to struggle with sign ups, but the majority of time an extra Lemming would be willing to help to allow the raid to go ahead. Bulldaz finally gathered all the mats, so then we it was just a matter of giving Ragnaros a final kick in the behind, and we finally had the reward of seeing a shadowy Bulldaz on the huge dragon above Stormwind Cathedral whilst transformed into his new matching Tarecgosa’s Visage, and we all got a cute little pet! less to say, it was spectacular and we were all very proud to see this long quest to an end.

The Fangs of the Father of course needed a lot of farming as well, but from the bosses in Dragon Soul this time. Lleu was the Lemming to be Legendary on this one. Lleu had to gather 333 Shadowy Gems and 60 Elementium Gem Clusters, all drops from Dragon Soul bosses. We decided to focus more on the Legendary this time since there were no other progression runs to do, and we switched some of our heroic attempt nights to try-ing to completely clear Dragon Soul in normal in one night. Lots of Lemmings took it upon them to help Lleu to the end. Again, weeks and weeks of raiding and clearing Dragon Soul got us to the final night, and what an amazing night it was, we had two 10-man groups clearing Dragon Soul in one night! The raids have been recorded and the footage will be used to make an awesome video so watch out for that. After we finished, we all gathered to admire Lleu’s awesome new daggers and demonic wings! Few things are more awesome than a female Night Elf, with white hair, levitated by a priest and with Demonic wings on her back.

Getting a Legendary weapon is not about one person only, it’s a team effort that keeps going for months and months. Many Lemmings went out of their ways to come raid so they could help their fellow guildies out, and that is admirable. So a big thanks to everyone who raided with Bulldaz and Lleu and helped them out, this could not be done without them. And of course thanks to Bulldaz and Lleu for keeping up to the challenge and mak-ing us proud. Finally, Nienor also deserves a huge thank-you for organizing all the raids, and working hard to adjust the line-ups to ensure each raid could go ahead.

Congratulations to our very own Legendary Lemmings for Cataclysm!

The repairs just have begun after Deathwing’s demise. But that doesn’t stop the residents of Azeroth from adventuring further! The Horde took the opportunity of this peaceful moment to strike into the defenceless alliance at Theramore Isle with a mana bomb, in order to gain more control over Kalimdor. With Theramore Isle gone, Jaina Proudmoore decided to step up as the leader of the Kirin Tor. Her first accomplishment would be turning the Kirin Tor into an Alliance faction. The Horde will be on the lookout, the Alliance’s wrath will be terrible, their retribution swift.

As the war between Alliance and Horde is brewing, fading mists are revealing new lands on the horizon. New lands for the factions to explore and conquer, lands that are inhibited by the peaceful Pandaren. As a World of Warcraft player, we will be able to play as this new race with the new expansion. The Pandaren used to live in the centre of Kalimdor alongside with the Night Elves but as the Night Elves started to get more and more addicted to magic, the Pandaren dis-tanced themselves from them.

The Pandaren are playable as either Horde or Alliance. If you choose to be a Panda of the Al-liance, you will have Aysa Cloudsinger as your leader. She teaches the Pandas the way of Tushui a philosophy where a fighter must always think first before going into action. The beliefs of the Horde Pandaren are exactly the opposite, rushing into action and. Besides Pandaren, there are more new features in the next expansion. Let’s take a look at them!

The MoNkEven if you don’t want to roll a Pandaren,

you can still fight as one! All races, except for the Goblins and Worgen are able to become a monk. Monks are masters of bare-handed combat, choosing to draw their weapons only for devastating finishing moves. It is a class which is mainly based on martial arts and is playable as melee-dps, tank and even healer. The resources Monks use for their abilities are energy and chi, if you are a healer the energy will be replaced by mana. Players can gather up to four chi, which they can release by using chi-dependant moves.

ScenariosSome people might have missed the epic

group quests we had before Cataclysm. Luck-ily these quests will come back in a slightly different form. Now you can group up with two of your friends to do a “scenario”. Scenarios are small instances with a group quest feel to it. It will not be as hard as real instances and is even doable without a healer or a tank.

WoWkemon! Finally your loyal companion pets will be

shining under a brand new spotlight in Mists! You can use your pets to fight against fellow pet-lovers. It is a turn based battle-system, where you are able to use three pets. There will be a lot of tactical play in the battles seeing as every pet has different stats, abilities and is a different family. Some abilities are super-effective against certain pet-families, so you got to choose wisely which pet you are throw-ing into the fight.

Challenge-modesAnother addition Blizzard has introduced

is challenge modes. The goal of a challenge mode is to clear a dungeon with your group as fast as possible! To make it even more chal-lenging, your gear will be replaced by a stand-ard gear set. The amount of time the group takes to clear a dungeon will be put into the rankings and you will also get different prizes depending to the clearing time. The rewards will be cosmetic items, so even if you have the best gear you can still run challenge modes for pretty rewards.

ConclusionSo, we have had a quick look at the main new areas of content that MoP has to offer. There

are of course many other changes, some of which have already taken place, such as new tal-ents and glyphs, and new achievements. This expansion has been eagerly waited for in the last months after a long gap since we have had new content. It is an exciting time for the Lemmings, bringing new challenges and content to explore together, and drawing back some that had been lost from our little swarm. Lemmings will, as always, aim to explore the new expansion together at a pace that suits the majority and leaves no lemming behind!

A Conversation with Past and Present GuildleadersIn the Lemmings, we have the unique situation where our founding Guild Leaders are still very important members of our community. We have the benefit of having the vision and ex-perience of Neti and Wilgje in guiding our community with the core values of The Lemmings of the Light. We also have the ‘new generation’ in the form of Daz and our current officer team, who are taking lead in keeping what makes us special alive, and moving forward in the new era. We had the pleasure of getting all Lemmings Guildleaders in one IRC chat room and took full advantage by asking a few questions on their time as the Lemmings ‘Boss Lady’.

What was the best about being lotl’s gl?Neti: Ladies first ;pWilgje: I think for me it was meeting new people all the time, giving people a chance and seeing them develop as raid leaders or within the community, seeing people build confidence just through being there. Seeing Daz for instance develop from a “lurking” guild member on the outside into an of-ficer and later GL is really cool :)Neti: Hahaha that’s trueBulldaz: Lol, yes, I’ve got to agreeNeti: I read Daz article in Jump 1 only yesterday, now that was amazing. The idea that he’s GL now, I think it’s the most amazing thing which has happened in the guild, like ever, in hindsight ;p. Well second most amazing thing ;)Bulldaz: Scares me too :pWilgje: I think the most amazing thing is that people participate so much, and are so loyal to each other. You don’t get that in a lot of online communities.Neti: My best thing about being GL is being in the position to lead by example, and encourage and motivate people to do the same. To be able to say stuff like ‘Leave no Lemming behind ‘and see peo-ple start to believe it, and actually making it come trueBulldaz: The thing I like is being surrounded by like-minded people, I hope to make people feel com-fortable playing in our guild. I know I’m a little quiet/shy at times, but the guild has a lot of great people in it, all making others feel welcome, it is great to be part of that, and to be called GL, well, it makes me proud :D

How important are your officers in helping to run LotL?Wilgje: Well, when I started out, and we were figuring out how to run the guild, the officers didn’t par-ticipate much, there were a few people who pretty much just enjoyed the rank but over time it became like more of a team with everyone pitching in with good ideasNeti: In the time I was GL, for me the officers were very important as a soundboard to be able to dis-cuss how the guild was going and discuss ideasBulldaz: Very, without a trustworthy team, it would be an impossible job to do things solo, but it is not just the officers, even non officers help out and a lot of it goes unseen imo, especially now, as the guild is more officer run, it leaves a lot more time to play the game, I imagine in earlier years, the workload on past GL’s was immenseNeti: Oh and another thing, what I personally enjoyed most was when we were in officer chat, while raiding, and most of the officers were actually in the raid. At those times we could discuss what was

Page 23: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

going on in the instance and what the plans for the guild were at the same time. I think that was incredible for team building and fun at the same time ;)Wilgje: I liked to do everything myself at the start, but I also had more time then and more energy to put into it. What I learned from running the guild is that I’m really good at multi-tasking which is something I do at work a lot

how much time did/do you spend on gl jobs?Wilgje: Well I think in 2005 it was like 40 hours a week, and it got less and less, until 2010 I think it was around 12 hours plus some playing the game of course ;)Bulldaz: Hard to sound committed here as wow is on a ‘lull’ pre Mop, but it probably balances out to 2-3 hours a day at the moment, I imagine it will grow a bit after the expansion hits (hopefully). That doesn’t include scanning the site with my phone 2-3 times a day, that’s just officer stuff ;)Wilgje: I’d say that’s healthy DazNeti: I think at the height of WotLK, say when we did Ulduar to downing the Lich King, more than 40 hours per week. When I stepped down as GL it went down to say 2 hours per day? Right now at most 30 min per day in supporting the officers and Daz. Hmm in hindsight, I can say that both Wilgje and I have put in enormous amounts of effort in the guild, which we probably won’t do again. Ever ;)Bulldaz: Jeez 40 hours a week, I work a full time job doing thatWilgje: I think for me it was more than 40 hours a week actually, I didn’t go to school as I was avoiding my real life at the time so I was playing pretty much full time - don’t try that at home and stay in school kidsBulldaz: Hehe, unless its maths

Are there any juicy scandals from your gl time you can share with us?Wilgje: Well, when I was guild leader for a few months, I think two months, the original guild leader came back who was there for handing in the guild charter so I invited him back into the guild and he immediately said he wanted me to make him guildleader again. I thought that was really weird, to leave like *snap* and then come back and make demands so... I told him that and he gquit :s Bulldaz: loser :pNeti: Yeah that’s a juicy scandal ;)Wilgje: I started out as really too nice to people but I quickly learned people take advantage of you and that doesn’t just suck for yourself as guildleader but also for the guild members so unfor-tunately there were a lot of people I had to remove from the guild. Then there were specific cases

Page 24: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

24

of people that were members we were really good friends with who would all of a sudden quit the guild and then talk trash about me if I wouldn’t let them back in but to be honest I’ve forgotten a lot of specific things because I’m trying to be more positive these daysNeti: Ok, I’ve been thinking back a lot, and I could tell you guys loads of negative experiences, but I do have one juicy scandalBulldaz: I don’t think people understand how keeping a good atmosphere in guild can be so hard at times, fortunately at the moment, we have a very nice balanced guild, so luckily, I have no scan-dals from my watch, sorry Wilgje: Hm wait, there is one which I think is funny. Well in 2006 or 2007 we had a guild meeting in AmsterdamNeti: Ooh, lol, yeah that is juicyWilgje: And a guy showed from a guild we ran Zul Gurub with, Montyro, and we had a good time and we met a few people for the first time like Lleu. Montyro showed up and was friendly enough but a bit peculiar, less ‘warm’ than the rest of us, and like a day or two after the meeting when we were all still on a “wow, that was great” high, he posted on our website that he felt like his guild was being ‘used’ to fill up runs to ZG and stuff, and we were treating them like “work horses”Neti: That same week, just before he made that post we did our last ZG run with them, the tiger mount dropped, and he won it. A few days later, he made that post and we never did runs with them again. I remember that roll like yesterday, I rolled 2nd highest and if I had won, I would have given the mount to Wilgje. It didn’t happen ;)Neti: Anyway I have also found a juicy scandal ;p. At one time we had this guy in the guild, whose name I won’t mention, but his toon’s name was Coldeyes, he was a nice guy, very reliable raider, a bit aloof. He raided with us for some time then Matzy, of all places, find out that this toon wasn’t his main but an alt, he was member of a hardcore raiding guild on Horde side. When we confronted him with this, he said: “Well done Sherlock” and quit the guild. Bulldaz: Sorry, that made me lolNeti: (that is why Matzy is the first person to get the Sherlock achievement). A few years later, I was contacted by the guild leader of some guild, a guy named Hippo something, who wanted to merge with our guild. Well it was kinda fishy, and then Wilgje and/or Matzy found out that the Hippo guy was the same person as Coldeyes, he knew this but we didn’t.Wilgje: I think I looked him up on the site and it was the same mail address as the other appNeti: ah that was it. So, in the end it was NO WAY JOSE. Anyway, end of this story - Hippo guy was angry, Hippo and his peeps in the end joined “The Clique” and they were happy ever since.

What is/was your biggest accomplishment during your time as lotl’s gl?Wilgje: I think for me it’s getting the guild in such good standing on the server, and such a good reputation as it has, that was really a goal for me, to be ‘known’ as a guild that would be a good home for casual players. Also, organising that Lemmings raid Undercity trip :)Bulldaz: I watched that the other week, again, sooo wished I was in Lemmings thenNeti: for me the highlight was the Lich King campaign downing the Lich King with the guild and repeating that feat five times in a row, with like 40 different Lemmings in total. I’ve spend a lot of personal effort in making that happen. And in the end we succeeded, which I’m incredibly proud of. For me that was the summit in Lemmings raiding. Oh and with Chi here, what I still remember is that Chi did get the LK achievement as well, even though originally she wasn’t in the raiding team. I remember you saying that you never could imagine downing him, but you did. Well that made me immensely proud, it exemplified the pinnacle of Lemmings raiding.Bulldaz: I can’t top these accomplishments, but I think mine is a simple one, having a great guild that didn’t all quit and move on when Neti and Wilgje took time out. It was a worry tbh, but everyone has kept up moral and were doing good, I am proud of everyone for that :) but it could have been different, it proves that Lemmings is full of people who feel like a familyWilgje: Don’t doubt yourself so much Daz, you’re doing a great jobNeti: Well I safely say now, for quite some time in the last part of my guild leadership, I thought of stopping almost every day. The only reason why I stayed on was because I thought the guild might

Page 25: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

25

collapse but when it became clear that Daz might be able to take over stepping down became a possibility. It worked out so I think that’s a big accomplishment in itself, the fact that Daz can take over and become a flagbearer of a guild which for a long time was built around its foundersBulldaz: Like Wilgje said before, from a background player to GL, I’m still scratching my head won-dering how that happened :p

How did/does being a GL affect your real life?Wilgje: Well, first WoW was an escape for me, but being a GL gave me a sense of purpose and self esteem that really helped me grow, I think that if I hadn’t had all that, my life would be very dif-ferent and I would still be hiding from my own fearsNeti: Well I have been at the forefront of the guild for 7 years and I have 250+ days played on Neti, most of the time which were spend being guild leader in fact. For a very long time the guild was a very big part of my life and I think it was worth it. ‘Neti’ is a big part of my online persona and as I know most people online, a big part of my social life, on the other hand I’m quite happy that I spend much less time in-game and with guild stuff now ;)Bulldaz: I try not to let gaming take over my life too much, but wow is more a social thing for me now, more so than a game when I was handed GL, I felt proud to be trusted. A also, it gives confi-dence, I like to think that, not only am I trusted, I feel honoured and surrounded by friends

how was it being a new guildleader?Wilgje: Well, for me it was like reinventing the wheel a little, people around me that I asked for tips, people in big guilds, all said a guild should be run in a certain way so that made it extra fun for me to come up with new ways to build community and enjoy the gameBulldaz: That’s easy.... scary, exciting :p. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s not as scary as I thought it would be, I have a lot of support of everyone ;)Neti: Hmm, for me it was a very sad experience when I became GL for the first time, it was be-cause Wilgje had to stop and the guild was at an all-time low. I never imagined the guild to exist without WilgjeBulldaz: I remember that Neti :(Neti: But when Wilgje stopped I just couldn’t let the guild die. I took over guild leadership and it was very hard for me. Not because of the technicalities of being the guild leader, I already had been officer for years and knew exactly what to do, just the fact that the spiritual heart of our guild was gone. I only did it because I didn’t want to let the guild down. Of course, after some time Wil-gje came back and the guild found the way up so that was better. The second time I took over was much easier but in hindsight it still took a great toll because just like Wilgje, I did most of the work myself and well, in the long term you find out you can’t sustain that indefinitely ;)Wilgje: Well, I’m glad Daz is the guild leader of Lemmings today, and I fully trust him with my baby.Neti: I agree completely with Wilgje, when I was GL I just couldn’t imagine the guild being led by someone else other than Wilgje or myself but I think Daz has turned out to be a worthy successor. He is the true 3rd ‘King of Lemmings’ ;)Bulldaz: Thanks Wiljge :). I’ll try to keep things in good order, but that goes to the officers and High Lemmings really. Thanks Neti :) Without things like Jump magazine, Winter Olympics and other organised events, this guild wouldn’t be half the guild it is now, so thanks should also go to all the members who make these things happen, the officers for sharing the work, the High Lemmings for their input and honesty on topics like applications etc. It’s the community itself who build this guild today, but the foundations were concrete, and built by you two, so thanks to you both ;). I have so much to say, but I can waffle on all night about how proud of the guild I am. But I won’t :p

A Lemmings Halloween27

A Lemmings Halloween traditionally sees a bunch of Lemmings dressing up in all manner of questionable costumes for a contest before raiding Kara. ‘A Lemmings Halloween 2011’ was bigger than previous years which featured some truly memo-rable costumes in the four categories – the scariest, prettiest, ugliest and most interesting costumes; complete with stories of love, bravery and Harrison Jones!

There has been unconfirmed rumours that some (bear-like) Lemmings have already begun planning their outfits for 2012’s event and speculation that Lemmings will once again outdo themselves.

Will Asphodel, Elkey, Augur and Tam be able to retain their crowns? Or will new Lemming champions emerge?

Track and Trade: This event was in essence a scavenger hunt with a twist, run by Kalliszto and Kamille. It entailed searching across Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms for items to combat an evil witch and save the world, yet the chal-lenge was of course finding them which pres-sured the Teams to try and remember where the items could be found. With the whole world as a playing field it was no small feat and I for one was thankful for flying mounts as had this took place in Wrath of the Lich King I could imagine a lot of air taxis being used. The biggest chal-lenge I found was bag space to put all the items in since this event seemed to tax my inventory management skills (which were and still are dreadful) to their limit! The Blue Team won how-ever, a close result and it was a fine start to the Olympics.

Fishing Contest: The Fishing event (or as I liked to call it “Your cast didn’t land in fishable water” event, perhaps the ‘Grand Tangled Fish-ing Line Spam’ event) was organised by Chiani and Kalliszto. As the name implies it was about fishing. Imagine that. As you may have guessed, none of my characters had any fishing skill whatsoever. So fishing for the bellies of Chiani’s and Kalliszto’s cats was rather hard to pull off, especially as a novice fisher-worgen. As for the requirement to fish up gold coins from Dalaran fountain I can only presume the cats really like shiny objects. Despite my ineptness I had a fan-tastic time and even though the Blue team tried very hard ultimately end tally lay at 17-34 to the Red Team. They probably used a fishing net or dynamite.

During February and March the Lemmings competed in the Winter Olympics throughout Azeroth in 10 competitive events between the vastly superior Blue Team and the Red Team. 25 Lemmings took part in the events while 14 kind Lemmings helped create the events, making the Winter Olympics one of the more popular events on the calendar. Each event had its own rewards which included pets, bags, rare items and gold however the grand prize was a whopping 30,000 gold for the team who won the most points throughout the event.

parkour in Stormwind: Parkour. The final solu-tion to our land mounts being unused. The great thrill of jumping and racing across the roofs of the Dwarven District will probably remain my fondest memory as Bart and Demon turned a rather mundane stretch of Stormwind into a haz-ardous competition. The catches were many: no falling, no dying and no flying! Naturally as Lemmings we needed practise on the not dying and not falling part but overall it was a rather energetic hour of cheers of success and quite sobbing at defeat. Okay perhaps not that melo-dramatic, but certainly fun. This marked a defeat for the Red Team as the athletic Blue team won handily!

Jump for points: Falling is second nature to a Lemming so a competition about it seemed perfectly natural, at least to Vico who organised this spectacle of gravity mass murder. I suspect gravity now has enough exp from all its kills to enter Mists of Pandaria. The goal was simple in principal: hit different markers for a variety of points. Of course that meant the most rewarding markers were nigh on impossible to get, not that it stopped the Teams from trying! Great fun was had by all yet there could only be one winner and naturally it was Team Blue! I suspect that was fate toying with me that the only way I could win was by falling to my death for points.

Flapping Relay Race: First I would like to clarify that I didn’t name it that. If it was up to me it would have been “Flappy Super Hippogryph Brothers Lemmingkart 2: Electric Boogaloo” since this event by our favourite [citation defi-nitely needed] pint sized Gnome Alluriah felt more like a platform jumping game like Mario. Add in the fact that the event was in a cavern with lots of fire and lava, and the fact that Hip-pogryph’s need to be physically prompted to flap their wings in a jump like fashion, you basi-cally have a level of Mario. So making a relay out of it was simply common sense. Apparently. A fun hour had by all as our two Teams sprung around the fiery platforms, eager to please their Gnomish overlord and win the prize. Team Blue carried the day leaving Team Red behind in the dust and probably ash. I also think they rescued Princess Toadstool and defeated Bowser. Could be wrong.

Toss the Relic: This event by Kalliszto and Chiani was in essence what would happen if Indiana Jones had a theme park ride dedicated to him. Riding back and forth on a lift, two Lem-mings threw blunt round objects at Lemmings tight-roping across an endless chasm. Whoever had the most round blunt objects won the day, and of course this was Team Blu- I mean Team Red! Sorry, force of habit. A fun night mired by my inability to balance in real life and apparently in a video game without balance mechanics (and for once I am not on about Mages being over powered.)

Quizzical Genius 4: Revenge of Curiosity. A long time ago in a tower far, far away..... In Da-laran. QUIZ WARS! Well not exactly, but it was definitely quite tense as the Dark Quizmaster Asphodel asked 30 World of Warcraft ques-tions which I don’t think Blizzard even knew the answer too! The real winner in all this was Cu-riosity, as they answered quite a few questions and championed for the Blue Team, leaving Red Team scratching their heads.

30

Page 31: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

Escort: Chiani and Vico apparently forgot we had the ability to summon people. They also managed to get level one characters to Shat-trath, and apparently lost their hearthstones. These are our survival experts folks, the Alli-ance has never been more screwed. So it was up to brave Lemmings to escort these walking punching bags to Stormwind on foot, as the world itself apparently really hates low level characters and lashes out at them at every opportunity. Team Red and Team Blue fought through Demons, Undead and general wildlife protecting their precious survival experts who also had a bad sightseeing habit. And a habit of auto running into Horde bases. Not that I hold a grudge or anything. Team Red won the day as Vico beat Chi to the end.

pvp in your pants: Originally a medical condi-tion suffered by people who liked eating Urini-usberrius lavished with tomatoes this- Sorry, wrong article. This event by Liadora and Sen asked the Lemmings to strip to their underwear and wrestle in mud. Now before you skip ahead, it’s not how it sounds! This was a sudden death uh, well, deathmatch in the Gurubashi arena between gearless Lemmings of Team Red and Team Blue for victory! The teams clashed in a battle of spellfire, totems, Druid cat forms, totems, cold hard steel and totems which only one could remain standing! When the dust settled the victor emerged, stepping over the corpses of fallen foes and allies, for their could only of ever been one winner. In the ancient language of the Dwarves they have a name for the winner, Dorfahkin, Stormseer! No Lemming could stand against the totems of doom! Oh, and Team Blue also won. The author of this arti-cle would like to state that all opinions and facts are completely unbiased. He would also like to stress that Totems are awesome.

Elementary: Murder! As William Shatter might say “deliberate insidious mutiny in space!” I have no idea how relevant that is, I’ll get back to you on that one, for Kalliszto and Kamille had a murder on their hands! So they invited the Lem-mings along to poke the body! Yay! The teams scoured Stormwind in search of clues to solve the murder, and while they were doing that I was trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to open an Adobe file to read the instructions of the event to begin with. In the end Team Red proved more eagle eyed and observant and won the day!

31

With 10 events done, it was time to an-nounce the overall winner and with 348.5 points the Blue Team stole victory away from the Red Team with a mere 6.5 point advantage. Celebrations carried on throughout the night and to me it felt as if the Winter Olympics 2012 had been a huge success full of fun and merriment! Also a lot of murder, which is a tad worrying.

It seems odd to be writing an article about population in the context of our guild being called Lemmings. They are victims of a misconception that they are capable of committing mass suicide to control population. In reality, the furry Lemmings do no such thing but as a guild we frequently com-mit hara-kiri whenever the Raid Leader shouts ‘wipe’! So, we are really nothing like them! The furry Lemmings do migrate in large groups to deal with overcrowding (says Wikipedia!) and have been known to attempt to travel beyond their ca-pability to their death. This is also nothing like us as a guild, though we do share a desire to maintain a healthy, active population.

I like to think that a healthy guild population falls somewhere between having enough members that you can play on a seesaw and not too many that you have no clue who anyone is! There isn’t, in the ‘lemming book of rules!’ a hard minimum or maximum and I think it works better if it is more dynamic than that. There are some indicators that your guild does not have enough members, this includes how active guild chat and the website is and having enough members to take part in guild activities (raids, events, contests). It also has a lot to do with how it feels. Do you feel like the guild is too few or too many, this can be as important as

the reality of the numbers because you could have many members but be a quiet guild and vice-versa. Indicators that you are getting too large are that you lose familiarity and a feeling of common con-nection, the very thing that gives a guild its char-acter.

Slow and measured guild members can be a positive thing too. No one likes to see people leav-ing the guild and when someone does it can have a significant impact, more so if the guild is on the smaller side. As time passes real life will always play a part in a persons capacity to play and more recently we’ve seen some other MMO’s, touted as WoW killers, impact on the numbers who log in. People joining and leaving come in waves and can be very different from one month to the next. More recently, we have seen the overall population of the game decline. In our case we have found that, where we would have normally seen a steady stream of applications, we now have only a few. This means that we have to spend a bit more time thinking about promoting the guild since there simply are not as many people looking for a guild.

Guild happiness can also be a measure of how healthy the size of the population is. If everyone is happy then the chances are you have got a good number of people in the guild. A happy guild is a

Page 33: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

The Lemming Population

33

popular guild but how do you maintain the morale and how do you make non-lemmings aware that we are a great guild. That is where the PR team comes in. More recently, the PR team has been an ‘open to all’ team of lemmings who have an interest in organising events, overseeing guild challenges/quizzes and also promoting the guild. I know how successful the Olympic events are and the Teapot which is a credit to them. We have also enjoyed music challenges and Halloween/Xmas events to name only a few. These events are fun to do and take a great deal of effort to organise, their impact on promoting the guild is far reaching. When a guild member is having a fun time it makes that person all lemmingy inside and it is that quality that shines out when you are in the wider world. The PR team is always happy to welcome new ideas and new members so do make yourself know if you would like to join.

The PR team is very open and there is always someone with a new idea or fresh approach to do-ing something again in a different way. When an idea really takes off the PR member who proposed it will usually be the one to commit to it, then the fun begins! The first job is to find the event team. This is the team who will take responsibility for making the event happen. It could be that a team member takes ownership of one part of the event

or does it all. It really comes down to the scale of the event. If it is a five man dungeon achievement run then that is very different to organize multiple events across several days. One of the team will be an officer who will make themselves available to the event organisers and provides support in a few ways. The officer will make sure that any gold needed is available at the right time and also ensure that any website promotion is done. Planning is the largest part of the event process in most cases and it takes time and effort to do because it can involve many people! You might think that planning an event is a chore but because of the nature of the events lemmings undertake it can be excellent fun. Events are trail run to make sure that they work and if needed changes are made to ensure they do. Promoting events can be anything from sim-ply posting the event in the calendar to changing the website front page and getting word out to the realm. You could have an amazing event but if peo-ple don’t know it is on and don’t come along then everyone misses out! Prizes are chosen and sourced and sent to the prize winners and the event team write reports of the events for us all to enjoy.

All this planning and organising means that the PR team working on a given event get to spend more time together. The PR team share a common goal and ideas get debated and played with until

Page 34: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

they reach a point where they work. It is really great fun and the sense of achievement you feel when you see that your idea has become a reality, the planning and hard work has made your fellow lemmings laugh during an enjoyable evening, it is truly wonderful. During some of the recent events I have had as much fun testing event rules and playing with point systems as I have taking part! Setting up meetings to discuss ideas or trail an event because it takes two players to make it work can be very entertaining indeed! I know that I have greatly enjoyed testing my events and even when seeing a flaw because working as a team you get it straightened out.

There is no doubt that the PR team benefits from having lots of people throwing ideas around. Having a blend of perspectives and opinions directing the course of an event makes it all the better. I am sure that for any of you that have ex-perienced a lemming event, such as the Olympics, you will know how much fun it is to be part of. I would urge to all to join the PR team, put some of your own ideas out there and you never know, in a few months we might all be signing up to take part in your event. Take some time to read some of the ideas already in the forum and give us the benefit of your thoughts on it. I know that the PR team look forward to your input.

Even though we have a PR team I must also add that you all do something very positive for the guild by being good players but more importantly

good people. You’re all the ambassadors of this guild whenever you’re playing the game and guild perception is crucial when you want to engage with the realm as a whole. The PR team does a great job and makes the recruitment of new guildies a much easier task. If an applicant has already been a part of our events or has had the pleasure to group with a bunch of lemmings then the hard part is done, they already know how awesome we are! All lem-mings are indirectly doing PR all the time!

Lemmings is a guild that has passed the test of time, it is a stable guild with old and new members all able to play a part in guild life. All this talk of population, of lemmings as a group, of the col-lective, feels like it neglects the fact that we are a guild who sees people. We see individuals and will always focus on the person, this is how you grow a guild of lovely lemmings. If you throw into the mix our application process then you can see how it ensures the continued success of Lemmings of the Light.

I started to write this hoping to give you all a picture of what the PR team does and why, it seems that I have spent most of this article writing about the context rather than that. It is increasingly clear, having spent some time thinking about it, the im-portance of our PR team and also the importance to focus on the individual who is sat behind the keyboard.

Please contact a member of the PR team if you have any questions or ideas.

In the beginning of WOW, I was born on Doomhammer in 2005 as a human paladin, which was Jaol. Being a Stroud defender of the good it wouldn’t surprise you, I was asked to be co-founder of the guild with the name “The Sa-cred Blades” The Blades was foremost a social guild and we tried a bit of casual raiding.

Wow turned out to be very addictive, not only for me but also my son (Bartimeaus) was drawn to the PC when I played WOW. Bart, who just became 9 years old wasn’t allowed to play wow, not only because Blizzard had put an age limit of 12 on the game, but my wife (who hated to game anyway) and I agreed with Blizzard that a MMORPG can be a dangerous place for a 9 year old boy. Needless to say that Bart com-pletely disagreed with us. For about a year Bart seated himself next to me when I was online, absorbing the wonders of WOW.

Then fate played a nasty trick on us. Bart be-came very ill (he is fine now); in January 2006, one week after he became 10 years old he was diagnosed with Leukaemia. A long period of intensive chemotherapy and school absence was at hand. At that point his biggest wish was playing WoW with his own toon. This was quiet a dilemma. My wife and I still thought that WoW was not a place for a 10 year old, but on the oth-er hand, how could we refuse his wish in these circumstances? My wife and I agreed to allow Bart to play WOW on a few conditions. First, he needed to be in a mature social guild, second I should be in that guild as well, and finally, he was only allowed to be online when I was at home sitting close to him. The Blades was for a

long time acceptable as a guild but when things got sour I decided to look for another mature social guild, where we both would be welcome. After scrutinizing the internet for a mature guild with a set of rules which made it obvious to me that my kid would be safe (and taken care of) I found the Lemmings of the Light. Actually, this is probably the best thing what happened to us in WOW. After an online chat with Ary, we both made our own application and were accepted. Bart had in the meantime his own account so we could adventure together.

Playing WoW with my kids (Kadyá my daughter joined a little bit later as well) is the better of two worlds. Quality time with my kids while playing my favourite game. Even my wife has to agree that I spent a lot of time with my kids (especially with Bart, Kadyá is keeping low wow-profile lately), and accepted our wow-addiction.

After the experience of exploring WoW together in the Lich King and Cataclysm expan-sions with doing dungeons, we recently picked up PvP which just blew us away. Fighting in a team with your son against other teams whilst being on Skype is so much fun and those mo-ments are dear to us. According to Bart a lot of his friends are jealous of what we do, like play-ing soccer they would love to play computer games with their Dads. Being in the Lemmings gives another dimension to this experience, it means that we share a lot of online friends, making guild-events in which we both partici-pate (dungeons, battle ground or 3 v 3 with Bunkers) even more special.

40 What is your main character? Chiani (Night Elf Hunter)

What alts do you have in guild? Moranna (Shaman), Innarae (Death Knight), Théa (Priest), Esmée (Dru-id), Aravel (Paladin) and Xhi (Monk)

When did you join lemmings of the light? 17th September, 2010

What is your favorite thing to do ingame? I love doing anything with other Lemmings. I do prefer social events but more recently I have also enjoyed raiding as it is another way to spend time with Lemmings and get to know people better. If there are no events on I like to just hang around chatting to people or spend time getting pets and achievements.

What are your main officer duties? I have just been promoted to officer, and as such, my main officer duty at the moment is to settle into the new role quickly so I can start show-ing how much it means to me that I have been given this honor. How-ever, I have always been keen on the PR side of the guild so I dare say I will get more involved with that.

What hobbies do you have outside WoW? Reading has always been a big part of my life, to lose yourself in a world that I could never even begin to imagine is something I hugely enjoy. I always have a book on the go, and read every day. I am really enjoying seeing other people’s thoughts on books in the new book club. I also enjoy spending time with my dog and watching movies.

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? I was first attracted to WoW because there are so many different things you could do that you cannot really get bored. For example, I could spend a whole night hunting for rare pets, doing achievement runs, or just fishing whilst watching a movie. Now however, the game itself is no longer important, and the only thing that keeps me playing is the Lem-mings. I have found somewhere where I can be myself, feel accepted and feel at home. I would do anything to keep our community strong and love spending time with people who are just the most amazing peo-ple I have ever met. Getting to know people, helping them and having fun with them is what I enjoy most about WoW.

41What is your main character? Nienor (Human Mage).

What alts do you have in guild? Neldoreth (Paladin) and Astarde (Death Knight).

When did you join lemmings of the light? 26th February, 2011

What is your favorite thing to do ingame? Well, it’s gonna sound cheesy, but just about anything that involves other Lemmings! Leveling, dungeoneering and raiding, it’s always great fun when you do it with good company. Except PvP. And archaeology. And fishing. Brrrr.

What are your main officer duties? Every officer is responsible for the all-around well-being of the guild, but apart from that, my specialty is raid organizing. I make the events, post line-ups and keep things up to date. I consider the raiding system of our guild to be one of the most important reasons the guild is so nicely bonded. So being responsible for that, it’s an honor relay.

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb? Gnomes? *picks up fork and knife*

What hobbies do you have outside WoW? Reading, I read loads of books, watch endless TV series, other video games etc Also I do scuba diving in the summer, sometimes play paint-ball with friends, and some guitar, but I’m hopeless These are just hob-bies, though, there’s quite a lot of studying involved in between since I am in the middle of my university studies. My biggest hobby, if you can call it that, is just hanging out with my friends though, I appreciate them a lot :)

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? I won’t lie, if it weren’t for the people, I probably wouldn’t play, but hang-ing around with the Lemmings, doing fun stuff, is great! Plus, I do like the lore and some of the mechanics of the game as well. I only started playing as Cataclysm came out, so I’m pretty convinced I missed Wow’s high season. But I did enjoy levelling and I still enjoy the end game con-tent. I feel like I can manage my playtime and the many different aspects of the game offer various things to do when I have a few hours to spare. And of course, there’s the guild, the game would be no good to me, if it weren’t for the Lemmings.

What is your main character? Akaryxn (Holy Priest)

What alts do you have in guild? Enua (Druid), Ryxana (Rogue), Mykara (Mage), and Squeal (Death Knight)

When did you join lemmings of the light?17th February, 2008 (with Arydan, Warlock)

What is your favorite thing to do ingame? Questing and leveling professions. I also do like a mindless grind – for example trying to get the full silver-thread set for transmog, or trying to max out rep with factions. I also love raiding (but hate raid leading) but my odd working hours restrict me on that.I go through phases of loving and hating running instances…I particularly dislike running an in-stance that everyone else knows and wants to power through, when I just want to look at the pretty scenery! Most things I enjoy in game come from the feeling of accomplishment, such as killing the Lich King after all those tries, or soloing Karazhan (never again am I going to do chess solo!). A great memory

What is your main character? Neti (Hunter)

What alts do you have in guild? Amuletje (Mage)

When did you join lemmings of the light? 1st April, 2005

What is your favorite thing to do ingame?I like to fly around on my dragon, and look at what happens on the ground beneath me.

What are your main officer duties? As co-founder and former guild leader I mainly focus on guiding Daz and the officer team on the principles upon which our guild has been found-ed, and how we tried to put them into practice over the years.

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb? None. They will just sit and wait until a Dwarf Hunter comes along with a ladder, and does it for them. What hobbies do you have outside WoW? I love playing other games, watching TV series and films, surfing the interwebs, making music on my iPad, photography, cooking, shopping, too numerous things to mention in fact.

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? I got into WoW because of the role-playing and exploring aspect, and that still holds today.

I have is after leading many raids to try to kill Malygos, the group finally did it…on the day I couldn’t be there! And in true lemming style, they reformed one week later so that I could get my kill. Actual-ly, that fight is a mini-version of all raids for me, i.e. after Neti screams at me for standing in the fire/running the wrong way/running/not running…eventually my guardian angel (aka Elm) says, ”Ary…just follow me, ok?”

What are your main officer duties? Err….well, at the moment I’ve been granted a bit of a sabbatical due to the huge amount of study-ing I’m having to do with my new job. I’ve been an officer for so long (and warlock counselor before then…back when we had those class roles), and seen new officers come and old ones go, that I’m often a ’point of reference’ for other officers (”Ary, how did we used to do such-and-such before?”).There was an old joke that Matzi, Spitbeard and I used to take it in turns to wield The Big Stick Of Kick. I’m also the one that often tells people off for swearing in guild chat… which is a strange paradox if you knew me in real life I believe my main duty at the moment is to monitor inactives (yeah… I’m sure you can see the irony there!). But hopefully once I’m back in game more (early November looks likely) then I’ll resurrect my “An alt is for life, not just for Christmas” theme and, cajole a few guildies into not abandoning their alts in the bowels of the guild.Oh, I was supposed to be the person who cleaned the guild bank…but once upon a time, an enthusiastic new officer (mage fella, names begins with N) came bounding in and offered to do it. We all took a sneaky step back with eyes cast down, whilst whistling a tuneless tune. I’m sure he regrets the offer now

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb? Well, if it was Squeal (my Gnome Death Knight) she’d probably just glare at that question in dis-dain wondering why anyone would care about such trivialities. However in general I am thinking 12 – ten to make a pyramid standing on each other’s shoulders (4+3+2+1), plus one who was sensi-ble and went to get a ladder, and another standing to the side arguing that it’s much easier to do it with a Super Gnomatic Dynamite Powered Lightbulb Changer. Oh and 27 others dancing round a maypole to keep everyone’s spirits up!

What hobbies do you have outside WoW? Not many at the moment due to the amount of studying I’m having to do. However, I suppose my motorbike could be classed as a hobby. Whilst it is mainly my method of getting around, it’s also a big part of my social life.More recently I taken up running. Well, *I* call it running, others may disagree. It’s not much – 30 mins or so 3 times a week, but I rather enjoy it. I’ve also started (attempting) to do weights. It’s a desperate bid to try to increase my upper body strength for my new job, but I do find it so much harder than running

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? To me WoW *is* Lemmings. Other than my first few weeks in the game, I’ve always been a Lem-ming. There have been times when I’ve rolled an alt outside of the guild so that I can retreat into my shell and just play the game in solitude and without any of the extra work of being an officer. However, they’ve all been deleted…except one…my rogue who is now my number 1 alt, and also a Lemming.I’ve said before and I still feel the same, if I was no longer a Lemming, I’d probably not play the game. The two things are so closely interlinked in my mind that they are the same. All guilds have peaks and troughs, and so has Lemmings. The difference for us is that we have rebounded from even the darkest moments, and got stronger each time. The reason? Well a strong guild leader helps, but that is not the reason. A committed officer team helps, but that is not the reason either. Lemmings is the guild it is today because of the strength and commitment of all guild members, and long may that continue.

What is your main character?Bulldaz (Warlock) yes, tried to play other classes, but I really enjoy the optional ranged/melee op-tion, the warlock is a complicated class (or was before MoP patch), all shadows and soul stealing, it’s fun.

What alts do you have in guild?Daz (Paladin) and Dáz (Death Knight).

When did you join lemmings of the light? 12th September, 2007. Wow 5 years ago, at the time, my RL mate Gazads was in guild and he got me in via Zamael I think, after they all moved on, I stayed, why move on when what you got with Lemmings is friendly, pressure free gaming.

What is your favorite thing to do ingame?Hmmm, I guess its raiding and joining Lemming groups for events like killing horde bosses (whats the quest/achievement called? For The Alliance!) 20+ Lemmings and some Pugs, storming across the Barrens to storm into a Horde camp, great times. Some nights it’s just nice to log in and chat.

What are your main officer duties?I guess dealing with new applicants, being there for people if they have any issues or problems/questions. I try to fill in where needed if an officer is away, but tbh, right now, things have been quiet. Now with MoP here, all the officers will fall into place and all help each other where needed.Keeping a level head about decisions is important to, I like to see both sides of a problem, then try to apply what is best for guild, not always easy, but so far I think we’re all doing a good job, guild seems happy, so officers are happy

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb? Everyone knows it takes five gnomes to change a light bulb, one on the ladder holding the bulb and the other four to twist the step ladders. But if the gnome happens to be an engineer, I guess just one, as he would use his world famous ’Bulb Replacinator Device’

What hobbies do you have outside WoW?I have a motorbike (09 Suzuki GSX1300R Huyabusa) and like to pop out over weekends for days out, not fussy where we go, just nice to be out (weather permitting these days).I also got tropical fish, not very demanding I guess. Also, I have a Garage on the side of my house and have it kitted out with gym equipment, but to be honest, I have been slacking in the gym, and I need to get back into it.Baking is also something that I like to do occasionally, (/thinks of the gym again), once I get the right recipe, I like to perfect it, I have bake-off competitions with a couple of mechanics at work (sounds weird eh, garage full of blokes baking, lol, we like to keep it quiet).

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? I think one reason is, it’s never finished, you tend to play one night and can play the next night or not, no pressure, its fits in around my lifestyle. But I think the main reason is the people I play with, logging on, always getting a warm welcome and under no pressure to chat if I’m not in the spirit of it. Sometimes it’s nice to log in and potter about mining or fishing, and just enjoy the guild chat, if I wasn’t in a Lemmings style guild, I probably wouldn’t be playing wow anymore, so I’m really happy to be part of something as friendly as Lemmings

What is your main character? Bunkers (Gnome Warrior)

What alts do you have in guild?Mardoek (Mage), Vindix (Druid), Zubei (Hunter) and Anastanax (Shaman).

When did you join lemmings of the light? 13th November, 2010

What is your favorite thing to do ingame? I have always enjoyed raiding and instances. One of the main reason for this is becouse I see this as a social/team thing. Especially combined with TeamSpeak, I enjoy this the most.Besides the instances, I also like to PvP the stress of off me.And oh yes, I take my proffesions very serious! I invest a lot of time (and virtual gold) in them, so whenever guildies ask for a craft, I feel very usefull (you all got the hint, I’m sure?)

What are your main officer duties? I try assist Nienor with raids. Unfortunately, Nienor seems to master this part quite well. If some lists need to be compiled, I noticed those tasks coming my way, and it always makes me happy to be of assistance!

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb?None, we have humans for that.

What hobbies do you have outside WoW? Reading books. I like novels but I also read scientific books. If you are interested about the novels I have read, join the Lemming Book Club. The scientific books I read usually do not relate to the studies I did (chemistry and nuclear sci-ence), but are mostly about history.Ofcourse, one can not only read books and play WoW without risking a chronical vitamine D short-age. So every so many week-ends and during some (most) of my vacations I go walking ot hiking.

Why do you enjoy playing WoW?I always have been a gamer, and WoW managed to add a big social element to gaming. The game-play itself, with the different roles in a team, is something I enjoy very much. But the biggest plus with the game is without a doubt the fact that I met a lot of nice people thanks to it.

What is your main character? Garalia (Night Elf Holy Priest)

What alts do you have in guild? Garvael (Warrior), Rozelle (Warlock), Zenesch (Death Knight) and Slygear (Rogue). There’s also a very inactive shaman around somewhere – Garsham. Now that patch 5.0.5 is in, I might attempt to relearn that class again and bring her back in-guild. Right now, she’s doing nothing.

When did you join lemmings of the light? 28th December, 2007. Yep, I’ll soon be hitting my five year anniversary with the Lemmings. There will be cake!

What is your favorite thing to do ingame? I enjoy anything that involves getting together and trying stuff out – the scenarios look like a cool way to do this at max level, as you just need to grab two other lemmings and go. Other than that, I enjoy exploring and pushing the limits of what Garalia can do and trying to keep her relatively ‘cur-rent’ with the raid content. I don’t make it to every raid, but it’s always great to hear the chatter over TeamSpeak, soaking in and hopefully contributing to some of that Lemmings sense of fun.

What are your main officer duties?I don’t have a particular portfolio of tasks that I undertake as an officer. What I do (I hope!) is to provide as balanced a view on the various discussions that arise during the day-to-day operation of a guild. Believe me when I say that it takes a lot of discussion and work to keep a guild afloat! Going forward into Mists, there are some plans which I’ve been discussing with the officers on how we can avoid Guild Bank bloat occurring (there are some suggestions on this in our regular News communications), so you might see me being a bit more active on that side of things. No spamming the bank with Peacebloom, or face the wrath of my Steelscale Crushfish!

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb? None. If the light bulb failed, it was clearly due to inferior Goblin engineering, and there’s no way any self-respecting Gnome would ever touch one of those death-traps.

What hobbies do you have outside WoW? My primary passion is music. I’ve been studying for a degree part-time, and I’m just a few credits short of completing a BA (Hons) in Humanities with Music. The plan is to complete that with First-class honors, and I’m not far off that goal at the moment. I play guitar, a little bit of violin, and can smash keys on a piano in a fairly educated way, but wouldn’t like to say that I can play it! I also en-joyed playing chess competitively, but had to give that up when my son was born as I simply didn’t have the time to play and study. I do enjoy reading, but find that there’s not many books that capture my imagination enough to make me give my time over to them, although I did devour Tides of War in a single evening’s reading.

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? A much deeper question than it first appears! When I first picked up WoW, back in Vanilla days (I think it was around patch 1.3 or 1.4 originally), it was as something to fill my time between travelling for work – something I could play in hotel rooms or whatever. I’d always enjoyed well-thought-out Sci-Fi and Fantasy settings, and knew that Warcraft had a strong legacy in the PC realm. I looked at the screenshots on the box with the Griffons, Yeti, Dragons, and the races, and thought that it might be nice to try this online RPG game. The sheer size of it blew me away! I remember walking

over the little bridge in Teldrassil near the skinning/leatherworking trainer’s cottage, and seeing the gates to Darnassus, and then stepping through and being absolutely amazed and the size of the city. That was what hooked me first – this intricately detailed, living environment where the artwork was carefully considered and well done.I was running quests in Darkshore when I joined my first guild, and realized that the community aspect brought the whole thing to life. It’s one thing to be a single person running through the world nominally allied to a particular group or faction – it’s a whole other actually interacting with like-minded people all throughout the lands. These days, I love the buzz of getting together with Lem-mings to have some fun. It doesn’t matter if that’s fishing competitions, Lemming jumps, Gnome runs, or just relaxing and chatting in /guild while herb picking – without the right community to play in, the game would have lost its sparkle long ago.So, the short version – all of the Lemmings out there, in-game and out.

What is your main character? Vico (Paladin)

What alts do you have in guild? Pythag (Mage), Euclid (Priest), Zano (Death Knight), Noam (Shaman), Krack (Druid) and Paintya (Hunter).

When did you join lemmings of the light? 4th October, 2010

What is your favorite thing to do ingame? Achievements and raiding, especially when it is with a group of lemmings who are enjoying themselves.

What are your main officer duties? My focus is recruitment and helping with PR. How-ever, we all do a bit of everything – Go Team!

how many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb? 1 x mage with the polymorph glyphed

What hobbies do you have outside WoW? I enjoy keeping fit, running mostly, and that’s easy to do with 3 daughters keeping me on my toes! I get a great deal of pleasure from my family and spend-ing time with them on days out (or at home / in the garden). I enjoy movies and music. I play poker with friends. I love good food and a good book!

Why do you enjoy playing WoW? I used to enjoy the vastness of the game (classes and achievements etc….) and there was always something to do. This is still the case but to a lesser degree. Since finding Lemmings I can honestly say that I enjoy playing now so I can spend time with some friends. I am a social animal and as a family man WoW means I can be social without having to leave the house late evening when the chores are done! It is a great fit for me

“I joined shortly before WOTLK was released. For me, TBC was a bit of a disappointment, because I had spent most of it without a guild. I didn’t want the same to happen again, so started looking for a home before the next expansion release. My guild wish-list was a short one i.e. Just the one guild on it! I have been playing WOW on Aszune since release and knew quite a bit about Lemmings already and what they stood for, as a guild, so it was really a no-brainer.

Not long after being a member I went on an extended break from the game due to real-life issues. I eventually returned as a new member and at-tended my first raid to Naxxramas. I was excited to finally be raiding again, and was prepared, with team-speak installed and my microphone at the ready. I had always been keen on chatting over TS during a raid. Yes .. I am a chatterbox – I admit it!

Anyway, at the first boss attempt, I was chatting away. I had some vital question to ask on tactics (aka “tic tacs”) and did so over TS. I pushed my “push to talk” button to ask my question … not realising until far too late that, somehow, I had bound my “push to talk” button to the same one I used for auto-run toggle … and I had run straight into the boss. I was greet-ed with laughs and not scorn. It was highly amusing … and it was also very apparent that I had found my kinda guild!

From there on, I felt right at home. At every turn I felt my opinions on subjects such as the game, guild policies, raiding etc. were taken on board and considered. It wasn’t long before I was asked to help out with raid leading and masterlooting duties from time to time; something I have done since Vanilla and to be frank am pretty experienced with now.

The proudest personal achievement in Lemmings, I would have to say, was being asked to be an officer. I was really proud to become a member of a very close knit management team. I have been an officer in quite large guilds since Vanilla … but Lemmings of the Light is unique. Its management ethos and rules are in place to make the game, and how we play it more importantly, as fair as possible for all. It was only a shame that I had to re-sign at the beginning of the year to focus on the build up to a new member of my family arriving in February.

What the future holds for World of Warcraft and the guild is hard to say. It is a hard time for all guilds right now on Aszune, I believe. Recruitment levels are very low. There doesn’t appear to be much fresh blood out there. This particular expansion (namely; Cataclysm) was an abject failure. Over-all, from release, to its current state, I think this expansion has alienated a large proportion of newcomers from outset (because post 85 content was arguably too hard) and has, of late, begun to alienate more long standing members. That being said, I am quite happy to admit that I cannot wait for MoP. I am sure Blizzard will learn lessons from Cataclysm.”

It will not come as an overly huge shock to my fellow guild mates that I love PvP. Right now, chatting and PvP makes up my entire wow experience and not to blow my own horn, (of winter - sorry couldn’t resist) I’m actually pretty darn good at it. But it wasn’t always this way. Before Cataclysm I was definitely not a PvPer, and in fact I secretly classed all PvPers as overwrought teen mouthbreathers with serious aggression issues. Any time I ventured into the odd battleground I was chopped up into tiny lit-tle bits quickly and repeatedly. “How the heck is this supposed to be fun?!” was my only thought while patiently waiting for a spirit res. So what happened? How did Liadora the fluffy bunny hunter that got lost in Stormwind on a regular basis turn into Eithne the axe waving killing ma-chine tearing up Arathi Basin?

I’ll tell you what happened. Tol Barad. Those early days of TB when no one had worked out tactics and the whole event was one big disor-ganized mess that no one could predict the out-

come of fired something up for me. The ability to blend in to the crowd made me less of a sitting duck and I loved the frantic pace. The down-side of only being online for one or maybe two battles a day drove me into reconsidering the battlegrounds. I dusted down my DK, cashed in my honor for a Gladiator hat and off I went. I still died (a lot) but the frantic-ness of Tol Barad had inured me to the pace of a BG and being calm enough to actually pay attention to which but-tons I was pressing allowed me to slowly im-prove my game. Before I knew it I was bedecked in a full honor outfit and hungry for more. At this point I will add Senrasi to the story. He has long been a PvP convert and had been patiently waiting for it to take hold of me. Now he saw his opportunity to recruit me to his long cherished hope; an arena team. As drunk as I was on the blood of the horde I didn’t hesitate.

I still vividly remember how I felt waiting for that first arena to begin. My palms were sweat-ing, my heart was pounding, Sen was grinning

in a slightly unhinged manner. When the counter ran out and the doors opened......

I don’t remember. Actually, I do remember going “argh oh noooo!” but the whole thing was over so quickly that I barely had time to register what had happened. Did we win? Of course not. We might as well have run in and laid down at the enemy team’s feet. It took another 4 tries before we finally won an arena, and even then I’m pretty sure it was more luck than skill, but we didn’t give up and the rest, as they say, is his-tory.

Cataclysm has been a good expansion for the guild in terms of PvP. Multiple arena teams have sprung up and we have even dabbled in guild rated battlegrounds. It’s been a time of explora-tion into the “other end game hobby” and the fu-ture looks good for Lemming PvPers. Just now for example, “Lemminglicious” (mine and Sen’s 2v2 team) has managed to keep a rating of over 1400 despite the current stagnation in arenas, and “Ctrl Alt Defeat” a 3v3 team comprising of Bartimeaus, Hroti and Demonicnight has made it into the top 3000 teams listing. As a guild,

we have killed an impressive 321,876 horde players and won over 1000 arenas. Impressive all round, but we have still to win our first guild rated battleground and just now “Lemminglove” one of the guilds 5 man teams is languishing with a 4-0 losing streak and is crying out for some fresh blood to turn its luck around.

Cataclysm has introduced some great new PvP content and with even more to come in the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion now is the perfect time to give PvP a go. Right now in Lemmings of the Light we have at least half a dozen all Lemming arena teams of all shapes, sizes and abilities. If Sen and I are on, it means we are available to come along, advice, or just generally encourage. Sen is a font of knowledge when it comes to technical questions, gear specifics and gameplay. I’m the tactician and can show you the ins and outs of the playing fields, shortcuts and tricks. So what do you say? In these dying embers of Cataclysm why not set the PvP world on fire and make “Lemmings of the Light” a name to be feared on the battle-fields!

In the late afternoon sunlight, Eithne is charging her way towards the Wildhammer Longhouse in Twin Peaks with the horde flag strapped to her back. She has no one de-fending her, the Horde are 2 flags up on the Alliances one flag and there is only 3 minutes to go. This does not worry her though. She runs with determination and purpose, the clank and rattle of her armour a familiar and soothing sound as she lopes across the open stretch of grass between the two enemies’ strongholds. From the corner of her eye Eithne spots a lone troll pounding across the field towards her. His misshapen green body is hid-den beneath the robes which mark him out as a mage and as Eithne realises this she stifles a small chuckle. Mages are always fun to kill, she smirks darkly to herself. As the troll draws into casting range Eithne calls down her abilities to deflect his spells, and his attempt to cause her a quick demise fails. Realising this he begins to cast his polymorph spell but Eithne is faster, strangulating him and pummeling him relentlessly with strike after viscious strike. The now terrified mage blinks away from her, trying to get back into casting range but Eithne is prepared for this and uses her death grip to pull him back towards her, he blasts her with fireballs but she is regenerated by the rune magic of her strikes. In the next moment, she obliterates him and he falls lifeless to the ground.

Calmly and casually, Eithne rifles through the corpses pockets, takes a handful of silver then surveys her situation. There is now only a minute left and she is at the base of the Longhouse ramp. She takes off at a swift run but as she crests the ramp is faced with a tan-gled knot of fighters. Without hesitation Eithne jumps into the fray, hacking and slashing at the band of trolls, orcs and blood elves trying to escape the building with the Alliance flag. She cuts down a goblin shaman who was blocking the path of a Dwarven paladin and he gives her a grateful nod before infusing her with the light from his paladin talents. Thus renewed she redoubles her efforts, grabbing the Blood elf hunter who bears the Alliance banner. As her weapon sinks into the hunters body her pet wolf is enraged and leaps to her owners defence. It bites and slashes at Eithne but the death knight ignores the pain and continues to harass the hunter, preventing her from fleeing and wearing her down.

By now the battle is becoming frantic and the enemies around her direct more and more of their wrath towards her, and it takes all of her skill and abilities not to fall before their on-slaught. From somewhere behind her another dwarf calls out to her, “JUST RUN!” the stocky red headed woman hollers and charges towards the hunter. Eithne does not hesitate and makes a dash towards the podium in the great hall. Behind her she hears a cheer go up and realises that the enemy hunter has dropped the Alliance flag but she has no time to cel-ebrate, her vision is dimming, as the deadly after effects of the enemies spells drain the life from her. If she had strength she would rage at the unfairness of it, she is meters away from victory and there are only seconds left. Just as she begins to stumble Eithne is flooded with light and warmth. “It’s ok, I’ve got you!” calls out the dwarven paladin that she aided earlier. His brow is furrowed as he pours all of his healing energy into Eithne.

Grateful beyond words, the death knight throws herself towards the podium, as some-where in the distance a horn sounds. In that very last moment possible, she takes the horde flag and stabs it into the brace on the floor. All aroun d her a great jubilation ensues, as it becomes clear that the Alliance has beaten the Horde yet again. Eithne rolls on to her back, exhausted, yet elated. From across the hall the two dwarves are walking towards her. The female shaman who polished off the Horde flag carrier is scowling. “Bloody hunters, you would think that a pansy coated in mail would drop faster than a daisy infront o’ a combine harvester, but no, them cunnin’ overpowered good for nothin’s are harder to kill than ogres cast from iron!” She folds her arms and turns her wrath towards Eithne, “And I don’t know what you are grinning about, that lot were rippin’ you to shreds! If it weren’t for Sen here you would ha’ been pet food.”“Oh please” smirks Eithne in reply, “I had it in the bag.” Nevertheless, she locks her gaze with Sen’s and the two nod respectfully at each other, words are not needed to convey their thoughts. Eithne stands up and claps the grumpy shaman on the shoulder, “Come on Seer, hero of Twin peaks, and defender of death knights who don’t know when to quit, I’m buying you the biggest pint Stormwind has to offer!

The Lemmings Guildhouse boomed with clat-ter and chatter as adventurers from all corners of the Azeroth prepared for their next adven-ture or recovered from their last. Snowseer slumped down into a high backed leather chair and let her short stumpy legs hang inches off the crimson carpet and began cradling the pewter mug of Wildhammer Ale with a rather glum expression. It had been one of those days. Any experienced adventurer would of smelled trouble when rumours of giant dragons in the mountains north of Stormwind started circulat-ing around every hapless peasant, lazy guard or clueless nobles and though Snowseer knew the chances of said giant dragon actually hav-ing a literal treasure trove was rather slim, she just had to look. “Been back five minutes and your already look-ing glum! Some welcome!” A voice chuckled some feet above the Dwarf, causing her to strain her neck to look up at the source. A tall, well everyone bar a Gnome and some small Goblins were tall to Snowseer, Draenei stood above the chair with dark hair and a mock scowl. “Dommens! When did you come back?!” Snow-seer’s mood lightened significantly. “About an hour ago, flown in on gryphon back. More importantly what is up with you and...” Dommens sniffed the air around the Dwarf, “where can I get what you’re drinking?”“Wildhammer Ale, needed something with a bit more punch tonight, think there is some round the back of the bar still. If Allu didn’t finish it all up, damn warlocks” Snowseer grumbled. “Hmm, never mind then. So, what’s up?” Dom-mens took a seat opposite the Dwarf.“Well, you probably haven’t heard about the ru-mour that a dragon was seen to the north in the mountains with loads of treasure. Just outside Stormwind! A big fire breathing piñata waiting to be smashed for all the lovely loot!”“Ah, I see where this is going” Dommens smiled, knowing the obsession all Dwarves had with treasure, trinkets and all things shiny. “Not all rumours end up being true you know. Even around here!”

“Actually....” The Dwarf looked away, slightly em-barrassed. Dommens sat up, eyes wild. “You’re kidding right? A dragon, this close to civilization? WITH LOOT?”“I never really got a good look, I saw it flying back to a cave you see, followed it in. Had loads of warning signs around, you know the type; up-turned carriages, charred corpses, signs written in the blood of small hapless kittens in ancient dragon tongue. The usual.”“And you ignored them?” Dommens raised an eyebrow.“Of course! All roar and no bite usually. So I put some traps out front, and waited for it to come out. Well after about half an hour I got bored of that plan and decided to Jenkins it. Rush in, guns firing.” Snowseer gave a large smile, her mood clearly aided by the fourth or fifth swig of her ale. “In hindsight, does that sound like a good plan?” Dommens questioned.“Pfft. It was an epic battle worthy of song and the like which poems are made out of! Hell, I should have a play commissioned about it!” The Dwarf blustered, her mood and ego swelling.“You got your arse kicked didn’t you?” “Kind of, yeah.” The Dwarf deflated, bruised ego coming to the surface. “Did kill it though!”“Oh, what’s the problem then?”“Well you see the cave was really dark. So when I was dodging its flames and generally trying my best not to die, it never occurred to me to uh...”“To do what? Bring a bucket of water?” Dom-mens added cheekily. “To move the dragon’s fire breathing attacks away from the treasure.” Silence fell briefly over the conversation, the background ambience of others speaking filled the void, then suddenly broken by a guffaw from Dommens. “That’s just” the Draenei snorted with laughter, “tragic. Wasn’t there anything left of value?”“I did find a chalice hidden beneath all the melt-ed or charred gold. Turned out it was gold plated though. Stop laughing!” Snowseer sulked, eyes staring into her mug. “Sorry! Really, don’t sulk. Dwarves sulking al-ways remind me of lost puppy dogs. And any-

way, things like that happen to the best of us!”“Really?”“Well, no, not really. But it isn’t the first story I have heard which has a similar ending and a very similar moral, want to hear it?”“I guess, got nothing better to do” Snowseer shifted in her chair, getting comfortable.“Very well! Have you heard of the Curse of the Mergnomes?” Dommens gave a wicked smile.“I don’t know what this Mergnome is, but it sounds disappointing.”“Oi! Listen first, past judgement later! Well our story begins like all good stories should, with a pirate paladin, a ninja and a ship called the Light’s Mercy.”

Joe Snow paced up and down in his quarters, ranting to the Night Elf across the desk from him. “Light’s Mercy is a rubbish name anyway! Who’d name a pirate ship with mercy in the title?” Joe stopped pacing long enough to start eating an apple, which was also a quarter of the overall food supply. The Night Elf was preoccupied cleaning her dagger, but looked up just long enough to answer the captain.“A) I didn’t name it. B) It probably wasn’t made and therefore named with the intention of being a pirate ship and C) it could be ironic. Oh and D) you never answered my question. Again.” The Night Elf rogue/ninja gave a slight yawn, then put both her feet on the oaken desk, her boots scuffing the map of the Great Sea.“I don’t know what we are going to do! Could start praying again, see if that helps” the pirate paladin gave some serious thought to his final idea. “Don’t see you coming up with any ideas Lleu!”“I can’t stab it, bribe it or be sneaky with it, what do you want me to do? Throw mean looks at it? Perhaps throw a shoe at it? Ooh, I could sing to it, how about waltzing on the roof?” Lleu snorted, then went back to polishing her dag-ger. “Anyway” she continued, muttering slightly, “You’re the captain, might want to inform the crew about our other problem.” Joe eyed the apple he was munching on, then gave a sigh. Silently, he drifted over to his ornate hat stand and pulled a grand green feathered captain’s hat from the top hook and straightened it over his head. Pulling a small moustache comb, he brushed through the now scraggy blonde beard and tidied his clothes. If it was the end, then he

would look dapper for it. “Come along then Lleu, if those bloodthirsty pi-rates try skinning me alive then I can offer them you while I run for the lifeboat!” The motley crew of seven crowded around the mast, ready to hear what they thought would be the plan to save them, and as the Captain climbed some nearby empty crates the whis-pers and grumbling of the crew became louder. “Listen up! I think it’s about time I filled you all in. As you know we can’t move and have been stuck in the same place for about four days now. Not two days as McGrath said, the so called land mass he saw us ‘sail’ past was probably whatever is picking us off one by one rather gruesomely. On the topic of McGrath, yes those were his entrails hanging from the parrots nest. But anyway, you probably knew all that. What you probably didn’t know however is that we have a bit of a resource issue. As in we are lacking some. As in resources pertaining to our general nourishment and intake of vital solids.” Joe’s fellow pirates looked around confused, not sure whether to be worried or not, causing Lleu to sigh.“He means we are running out of food” the rogue clarified, smiling at the thought of drop-ping Joe in the midst of the pirates inevitable ire. Much to her irritation though, the band of “bloodthirsty” pirates met this news with mild irritation and shrugs. “Did I mention the booze is also gone?” “Flay him!” screamed one.“Tie him to the mast and leave him out for the beast!” shouted another.“Perhaps we could eat him” inquired a large burly one, who had a parrot with an eye patch perched on his shoulder.“Don’t listen to the Elf! The booze is just miss-ing!” Joe defended himself. “Wait that still sounds bad doesn’t it?” With a clatter of steel the pirates drew cutlasses. “Always with the swords guys? Come now! It’s not my fault! I mean sure, we didn’t have to take the short cut, and sure I guess some amount of responsibility may fall upon me as your leader. But-”“The captain is cursed! Cursed by the Light no less! He’ll drag us all down to his fiery hell!” claimed another, more melodramatic pirate.“Again with the whole ‘blaming me’ thing! Sheesh. Fine! Since you’re all so obsessed with killing me, go ahead! Guess you’ll never get to find out my plan to fix all this” Joe baited the

Page 56: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

pirates.“I guess we won’t find out your plan then, get him!” ordered the pirate with the eye patch, well, one of the pirates with eye patches. “No! You’re supposed to hear me out because you’re curious! I was baiting!”“Oh fine, out with it then!”“It’s simple, we are dead in the water even in high winds, not budging an inch! Plus something has killed half the crew! So, it is safe to pre-sume whatever did kill them, is keeping the ship still-” Joe plotted, scratching his beard while he talked, but stopped when a pirate waved his hand in the air wanting to ask a question. “Yes Davies? What is it? No you can’t go to the lit-tle pirate’s room when I am hatching a brilliant scheme.” “It could be a Kraken!” Davies exclaimed. “Doubt it. No tentacles about, plus McGrath wasn’t pulled under the waves and devoured, more like he was gutted like a fish. On the sub-ject of McGrath, before he was gutted like a fish he did suggest morale boosting activities and uh... never mind. Anyway, so the solution to us being stuck here and running out of food is sim-ple” Joe concluded.“It is?” Lleu asked, scratching her head.“Sure it is! Me and Lleu will stake out the ship at night when the beast strikes, kill it, then we can all eat it!”The master plan was met with unanimous silence. So that night the trap was set. Lleu and Joe stalked the deck as the rest of the crew barri-caded themselves in the hold for another night. The pirate paladin readied his sword, preparing to strike at whatever the horror that was stalk-ing his ship, and also acting as bait while the Elf hid in the shadows ready to ambush the beast. A large thump, followed by several more, lighter thumps echoed throughout the night. “Sounds heavy” Joe muttered, rotating his sword around to point at every shadow. A barrel crashed down and rolled to the side, it’s con-tents of fresh water pouring all over the deck and spilling around the captain’s feet causing him to jump slightly and curse at the shadows where the barrel had come from. A high pitched cackle vibrated in response, chilling the blood of all who heard. Undaunted by the sound, Joe leapt into the shadow where he heard the sound and found the beast. It was smaller than what he imagined, but in

hindsight he had expected something as big as a house and with more teeth than a Worgen at a butchers. Instead, it was a small humanoid with light blue scaly skins and a pair of flippers for feet, smaller than a Dwarf or a Goblin, more the size of a.... “Gnome?” uttered Joe, puzzled at the anti-cli-mactic monster. The “Gnome” smiled, with what appeared to be extremely bloody nightmarish shark teeth. “That’s just fantastic that is, Gnomes are creepy enough without those!” Without fur-ther pause the paladin slashed at the monster with a mighty yell, which the thing responded by biting clean through the sword. “Lleu! I found it!” Joe leapt backwards out of the shadow and began running towards his quarters to retrieve a new sword and in his haste almost tripped over the Elf Rogue. “Oi! What is all the shouting about, you’re supposed to be bait and good bait do not shout!” Lleu exclaimed.“Gnomes! With teeth and fins and creepy laugh-ing. Like a Mergnome!” Joe exclaimed, still run-ning for the door.“Mergnome? Wouldn’t Laughing-Shark-Gnome sound better?” Lleu quizzed after the fleeing paladin.“Of course not! That’d destroy the air of mystery around it! By the by, it’s probably right behind me.... Or right in front of me...” Joe trailed off, backing away from the “Mergnome” that had ap-peared in front of him. “Really quick on their feet considering they have flippers!”“Actually, there is two of them” Lleu smiled.“See, I knew you were going to say that! Why do monsters always come in hoards? Okay, you take them on, I’ll get another sword or some blunt instrument and.... why are they laughing again? That’s really creepy.” The Mergnomes ad-vanced slowly, teeth bared. “Jump!” Lleu pointed to the left.“Where?!”“Overboard, duh. Lead them off the ship and loop around, or best case scenario they go after your crew! No offence.”“That’s not a bad idea actually. The jumping bit, not the sacrificing my crew to Mergnomes! Ladies first.”“Charming.” Lleu frowned, then leapt off, shortly followed by Joe. The dark cold water enveloped them, and Joe relaxed slightly in the silent depths, but the movement of small hu-manoids in the water around him caused him

Page 57: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

57

to panic. It was too dark to see properly, but he could sense them. Lleu swam down to him and motioned towards something underneath the ship, clutching to the hull. If Joe had not of took an advanced engineering course, he might have called it a giant spider. However he had, so he could definitely confirm it was a giant metal spider. With windows. And what appeared to be air conditioning. The flurry of what he assumed Mergnomes excited around them, he could only assume there was a lot more than two of them, but curiosity got the best of him and with a quick confusing hand gesture which could mean anything from “attack that priest” to “don’t stand in the fire!” the pair swam over to what Joe assumed to be the Mergnome’s vessel. With a swift tug they opened the bottom hatch and into the strange ship. From what they could tell, it was a submarine that the Mergnome’s had used to prey on vessels of all shapes and sizes, and indeed it showed. The compartment which housed steering a wheel and several levers was also host to a venerable treasure trove of gold, silver, copper, marble and even their missing booze! It did appear as if the Merg-nome’s, in their madness in Joe’s opinion, were using the weak soft metal for their ma-chinery. So it was natural that Joe wanted to “lessen their burden” by taking some of the collected wealth, and then dash for the lifeboat. Lleu wasn’t against this idea at all however she also noticed the blatant problem with it, namely that they were sur-rounded by shark gnomes who would kill them should they try and leave. They needed a distraction or weapons yet as they plotted the monsters slowly opened the hatch....The Mergnome’s piled into the submarine which had detached itself from the vessel above, confident that their prey was trapped, and started reattaching the submarine while others sought the intruders. Within a few button taps however their ship violently rocked and their hull buck-led with deafening bangs and began descending to the dark depths be-low. Meanwhile Captain Joe Snow clambered aboard the deck of the Light’s Mercy followed by Lleu, both carrying small sacks of gold.

Snowseer raised an eyebrow.“So they escaped with the gold? How was this story supposed to make me feel better?” the Dwarf sighed. “A story with pirate paladins, Night Elf ninjas, shark gnomes and magical vessels that glide underwater and you have a problem with the moral of tale?” Dommens shrugged.“As a matter of fact I do!”“Okay, how about this. Only pirate paladins can loot and get away with it.”

The first meeting with the Enderman. Mysterious creature, very black but ever so purple, likes to pick blocks up and put them over there. Just one of the many things that make Minecraft what it is. What makes it spe-cial is the company of Lemmings. Minecraft for a lemming is not just about building the biggest or prettiest structure, it’s about being together as a community. The first night in the game was an experience that we shared together and every decision was made with the community in mind. Here we could let our imaginations run wild and create our own little virtual world where we would be neighbours and companions.

In four months we went from tree punch-ing newbies to seasoned architects. Our first structure we built together was the Guild Hall. It was the central point in our world which we shared and was a part of us all. From this point onwards we branched out into the wil-derness to make what is now ’Lemmington’. Each and every house is a unique building which shows all individual personalities at their best while at the same time intertwining to form our beautiful village. In time many lem-mings went further afield to build some of the grandest structures we had ever seen. From giant glass Armadillos to massive sky castles with many floors and hallways and even huge Pokemon! We can also boast a very grand railway structure which will take you to almost any destination. Nothing is impossible.

There are many things to be done in Mi-necraft. You can build the tallest towers, or explore vast underground caves full of creepy monsters. You can take to building your very own farm with mechanised chicken coops and redstone powered wheat harvesters. Or maybe help another Lemming build the castle of their dreams. You can even make your own NPC village and protect your citizens from the likes of Creepers and Zombies.

Another great part of being a community in Minecraft are the fun events that have been organised. Whether it’s dungeons with scary mobs or a Hunger Games style battle arena. There is endless fun to be had and doing them together as a team symbolises every-thing that Lemmings are about, friendship, teamwork and a lot of laughs! I can truly say that without the company of so many amazing Lemmings I would not have braved the world that is Minecraft and I hope our community will continue to thrive and grow throughout the years.

Finally we would like to share with you some of the great examples of what we have achieved, our most treasured and inspired creations. Also if you would like to join us on our adventure then all you have to do is pur-chase the game and make an application to our Minecraft group on the Lemmings of The Light website. We look forward to meeting you. Happy digging!

TamWhat is your favourite project so far?Of my own? The Armadillo! Someone elses? It’s have to be Seers ’Sandcastle’, what started as comment about building a sandcastle turned into a gigantic build full of style and design. I love it.

if you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?A full size Imperial Star Destroyer

lunalightsWhat was your first impression of the game and the community? The game, your creativity is the limit, the community outside the lemming server uuhh scary. The community on the server has that authentic lemming feel, a few seconds after entering people are chatting and taking the time to show you around *points with hidden finger at chi-joe*

if you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?A big floating city made out of snow, with a cathedral a fair, little cute houses and lots of waterfalls.

SheebahWhat was your first impression of the game and the community?Lemmings is a wonderful community, MC was very alien to me when I logged in, but all wanted to help me along.

if you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?I’d built a crashed saucer section of the starship Enterprise (TOS) and when you walk inside you’ll be on the bridge, with captain’s chair centre stage.

MatzyWhy did you decide to join lemmings of The Minecraft? It was hard to avoid the hype around Minecraft, and the game intrigued me. I like games where you get to build structures, and explore … and being able to do so with fellow Lemmings was the cherry on top!

What is your favourite project so far?In terms of my own projects, it has to be the first house I built. I still like the way it looks now, with a glass front, and roof top garden. In terms of my fellow Lemmings constructions, I would say Rinani’s massive lava monument.

if you could sum up your Minecraft experience in three words what would they be?Diamonds, Diamonds, NOMNOMNOM!

ChianiWhat was your first impression of the game and the com-munity?It took me awhile to work out how to do anything, but as I worked out how to do things it seemed to start making sense. The Lem-mings community is amazing; I love working on things with others and seeing what people create. It’s an incredible way of seeing your fellow Lemmings in a new way – who knew Lleu could create such wonderful tree houses or Seer such cosy castles and Dom-mens such interesting stone buildings (or even Tam an armadillo or Neinor a pikachu… I could go on and on ). Mostly I enjoy the spirit of Lemmingness in Minecraft.

if you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?I would love to build a cathedral. I’ve always found cathedrals to be beautiful, peaceful and buildings full of light and history. I would love to recreate that but I have not got the skills to do it jus-tice. Maybe, one day. Also, something round; I desperately want to make a round building just because I can’t.

NienorWhat was your first impression of the game and the community? After the guildchat in wow, seeing how people interacted on Minecraft I felt right at home. All the usual Lemmings banter and fun! It has been great to see what everyone’s imagination can produce, and there are some amazing projects there.

What is your favourite project so far?Out of my projects: The Skycastles; it has been great fun building it along with some other very lovely Lemmings, and by now it has become this huge complicated structure. I also enjoyed building the Pokemon. Other projects: I adore Lleu’s treecastles, and Seer’s crazy enormous places.

lleuWhy did you decide to join lemmings of The Minecraft?Because I am in Lemmings, and playing with other lemmings in other games seemed fab!

What is your favourite project so far?My tree castle, I loved building in the vicinity of others and doing little joint-side projects in the area.

if you could sum up your Minecraft experi-ence in three words what would they be?Super awesome sauce

Augur Why did you decide to join lemmings of The Minecraft?I totally love Minecraft and I totally love Lemmings, so it is love^2, why else?

What is your favourite project so far?Humongous carnival grounds with mazes and colorful towers. It made me drop jaw.

if you could sum up your Minecraft experience in three words what would they be?Lemmingish awesome sauce.

WolfyWhat is your favourite project so far?Hmm my npc buble village I am building atm. It’s still far from finished, but I think it will be my best.

if you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?A really big castle, but I think I am gone need to ask some help with that (ehmm <—-not good at asking :-p)

if you could sum up your Minecraft experience in three words what would they be?Creativity, freedom, Fun

DommensWhat is your favourite project so far?I like my own castle the most, I love adding new sections to it and see it grow slowly. Though I’ve got to say that I have seen some fantastic projects I’m a bit jealous of. The one I also really love somehow is the huge tree close to Nienor’s castle made by Mr Snow.

If you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?I would still work on my castle. I really want to see that one finished. Though, when I finish one part I always think of three extra parts I need to add. I doubt I will ever finish it. But, if I finish it I want to make some Asian themed village. Which is also going to be huge. ;D

Joe SnowWhy did you decide to join lemmings of The Minecraft?Well, since the whole multi-game guild idea went through, I was wondering if it were possible to cre-ate a little community within Minecraft. At the time, I didn’t know if anyone would be interested but, I did know that me and my sister both loved playing it. Therefore, I thought I’d buy a server, give it a try for a few months and just leave it if it doesn’t lead to anywhere. (Hosting a server locally was a bit prob-lematic)

had you played Minecraft before this?Yes, lots. However, I always felt quite alone. I wanted to share my creations with others, I even tried jump-ing on a random server on the internet’s, but that was waaay too laggy and I knew no one.

What was your first impression of the game and the community? The community is everything in this game, they

made the texture packs, mods, everything that makes minecraft Minecraft. I feel, what Mojang did was provide a platform for these people to be crea-tive.

What is your favourite project so far?It may sound silly, but I really liked the first few days of playing when we had just started the server. We were fighting to survive in the midst of a vast jungle, filled with cats. Only by working together did we man-age to create a home for ourselves; Lemmington.

if you could build anything at all, no limitations other than what the game provides, what would it be?Probably something really complicated with redstone stuff, with trapdoors, hidden levers etc, that kinda thing! Or, Just a HUGE DRAGON!

if you could sum up your Minecraft experience in three words what would they be?Totally Epic Lemmings

Back when SWTOR was released, we started a Lemmings of the Light franchise, if you will, over on Ludo Kressh Server (Republic). From release we had a real large amount of interest and quite a few members from our community on Aszune. SWTOR is a very story driven game during the levelling process, and quite frankly once you have spent a few hours levelling in SWTOR you will soon become a bit hesitant to return to levelling in World of Warcraft. Even the most basic of quests are fully voice-acted, with numerous dialogue choices and strong story lines. Very often the decisions you make during a quest will affect your alignment to the Light or Dark side … All of this has been done very well, and I think Blizzard could learn a thing or two on this front.

We were fast approaching having enough lvl 50 players to consider an operation, but to be fair the wheels started to fall off a bit. Quite a few members became inactive for one reason or another, but another more pressing issue arose. Ludo Kressh’s population took a nose dive after the trial period ended and it never recovered.

With a diminishing number of active guildies, and an ever diminishing number of players on the server in question, really there seemed to be no quick fix. It seemed the solution was to come by way of server transfers being intro-duced in early summer. Bioware admitted to opening too many servers on release in error, and Ludo Kressh thankfully was one of the first servers to be offered a transfer to the Red Eclipse Server. I think a few of us are holding out hope that the next content release (namely 1.3) will be a successful one and if so I think it is entirely possible Lemmings of the Light may start afresh on this new server … Watch this space, I guess is all I can say.

Diablo is a single player RPG in which your hero is on a mission to free the Sanctuary from the demons. When WoW was designed it took a lot of ideas from Diablo’s III predecessor Diablo II. It shows. Experienced WoW players will feel at home right away.

The game feels like a WoW vanilla style dungeon crawler, but with a strong emphasis on mob bashing and item grinding. In Diablo not only there are much more mobs around but also your character is way more powerful. As your character levels it will have access to truly spectacular skills, are able to use ever stronger gear. Fights in Diablo are fast-paced and exciting, especially on higher levels your character feels all powerful while it slashes through waves and waves of enemies. For even more fun you can easily team up with up to 3 friends and game difficulty is dynami-cally adapted to your group composition. So if you love gear and tweaking your character and WoW-style instance grinding is your kind of fun, then this is the game for you.

Diablo III was launched on 15 May 2012, almost a decade after its highly successful predecessor Diablo II. Blizzard did every-thing in their power to hype this game and it worked. Anticipation for the game was enormous, with 3.5 million copies sold in the first 24 hours after its release the game became the fastest selling PC game of all time. Unfortunately this huge success resulted in a very shaky launch, since Bliz-zard’s servers were overwhelmed by mil-lions of user requests. The first two days it was almost impossible to actually log into the game, and it took several weeks before players could log and play reliably.

Even worse, very soon after launch it turned out that blizzard still had to iron out some teething problems. The much touted auction house couldn’t handle the amount of players and it took several weeks before blizz could fix this. It also turned out that the game difficulty slope didn’t work out as planned.

Blizzard had envisioned that in order to reach max level players had to play the main story line three times in a row, on Normal, Nightmare and Hell difficulty. Once you’re at maximum level you can then play Inferno difficulty, which was designed to be

the ‘end game’ and should keep players busy for months to come.

Unfortunately, because players could trade and improve their gear very quickly with the Auction House, they could master the first three difficulty levels in only a few weeks. Only to then find out that the last three acts of Inferno were incredibly hard. Unless you were fully outfitted in gear which drops at the very end of the game, you could just not survive a single mob hit in Inferno Act Two. The result of this was that the majority of hardcore players reached In-ferno difficulty relatively quickly, only to find out that they hit a brick wall and couldn’t progress at all.

Dissatisfied players started to leave the game in droves, Blizzard had to nerf the higher difficulty levels considerably to get them back to play. Several consecu-tive patches improved gear drop rates and made elites considerably easier to kill. With the latest patch 1.04 a whopping 100 so called Paragon levels were introduced, which gives players the ability to keep im-proving their character stats and therefore easier to improve their chances in beating the game, even if they’re at max level.

Diablo’s launch

Page 68: Jump 3: A Lemmings magazine

The Lemmings have a large contingent of Diablo III players, partly because Blizzard gave away the game with the Annual WoW Pass. As of yet Diablo III doesn’t have any social tools, apart of course from the battle.net friends list, which is shared between all WoW, StarCraft and Diablo. We therefore have on our web site a list of Lemmings in Diablo III with their battle tags. Feel free to consult that list if you want to add some familiar names to your in-game friends list. Also, you can add your battle tag to that list, to make it easier for other Lemmings to find you in-game.

With the Mists of Pandaria expansion launch most guildies will obviously be very busy with communicating with their Inner Panda and will not spend much time in Diablo III. But Diablo won’t run away. As a single-player game it will always be waiting, ready to be fired up at a moment’s notice. Remember that as a Blizzard game playing Diablo means that you’ll still be on battle.net chat, so even if you feel like spending a bit me-time on downing The Butcher yet again, you’re only one chat request away from be-ing able to substitute in a MoP raid.

Lemmings in Diablo III

Players who aren’t familiar with Diablo yet, may ask: what does this game have to offer? Well, the first part of the game is very fun and easy to get into, especially if you’re used to other RPG’s or MMO’s. It has an excellent story line to boot. After you’ve finished the story line, you can replay the game on higher difficulty levels. Inferno, the highest difficulty level has been nerfed after launch, but is still very very hard.

Some players will just play the game for the story line and stop or change over to an-other class once they’ve completed it. Oth-ers will want to beat the game at the highest difficulty level, or reach the maximum level (the current maximum Paragon level 100 will take a normal player at least a year). Those

who want the ultimate challenge will want to play in Hardcore mode, where you can do all of the above, but where you lose your char-acter after a single death.

For me the main draw of the game is just the powerful feeling you get from playing your character, the improving and fine-tuning of your characters in almost unlimited ways and the slashing through the game content ever faster and more efficiently as you play.

But don’t take my word for it, you can find it out for yourself. If you have a battle.net ac-count, you can download and try the Diablo Starter Edition for free. With this edition you can play up to level 14 and/or the first main boss of the first Act for free.

The Barbarian, the Monk and the Demonhunter were standing outside the entrance. It had been raining most part of the night, and the trip to the Monastery had so far been fraught with encounters with cultists, undead, demons and worse. The entrance of the cellar underneath the mostly demolished shed had an aura of promise about it. What did it promise though? The De-monhunter was the first to express what all three of them were thinking: “It might be a dry shelter for the remainder of the night, but after what we have encountered so far, it is more likely it houses even greater dangers.” “Yeah, I know.” said the Barbarian “But if there is something inside there, all the more reason to go in and kill it.” The Monk kept silent as always, but moved towards the entrance. It had been dark outside, but even so, it took some time for their eyes to adjust to the dark-ness in the cellar. Time they weren’t given. Something small and fast came at them from the darkness, seemingly all teeth and claws. Sec-onds later, the tiny demon lay dead at the feet of the Monk. But the sound of the skirmish had not gone unnoticed…From the back of the cellar, a thin and eerie voice said “Aha, look what the cat dragged in!” The voice was so weak and thin, they should have hardly heard it over the sounds of the rain outside, but it was as if it was spoken directly into their heads. At the same time, several cult-ists appeared out of the darkness of the cellar, attacking the Barbarian who stood in front. The Barbarian’s two-handed axe was not the ideal weapon to fight in such small indoor spaces, but he had more than enough experience in han-dling himself in these situations. The first cultist got his face splintered by the handle of the axe. The second had foolishly stayed behind his companion, given the Barbarian enough time to swing the axe in his direction. However, there were more cultists coming, and from behind them, the summoner with the eerie voice had started some dark incantations. The words he uttered were incomprehensible, but it was clear they were in some cursed language that should have been forgotten many ages ago.The Monk was now set upon by cultists. The Monk’s fists and feet managed to keep them at

bay, but for how long? The Barbarian had found himself surrounded. He started to have trou-ble wielding the big axe, and had been unable to avoid the curses from the summoner in the back. Around him, cultists were falling under the barrage of arrows the Demonhunter was raining down on them. Despite the support of the De-monhunter, the Barbarian saw that he had to fall back. He was no coward, but he would not die for nothing either. When he moved back, the summoner laughed, and came forward. “Leaving already? Oh I don’t think so!” But then a terrible war cry of the Bar-barian filled the cellar. It seemed to stun the cultists, and gave the Monk the time to finish off some more enemies. The Barbarian did not waste the opportunity either, and he launched himself in a huge jump towards the summoner, knocking the air out of his lungs. The fight seemed to have turned in their favor, and sev-eral cultists now tried to find shelter in the back of the cave. The summoner managed to get up again, his face all anger and hatred. He started a prayer to some ancient demonic entity, but before he could finish it, his hands grasped his own throat, were all of the sudden, the feathered shaft of an arrow had appeared. The next instant, he lay decapitated on the floor. The remaining cultists proved no longer a challenge to the three ad-venturers.When looking at the carnage in the cellar, none of the adventurers felt like spending the re-mainder of the night there. Not only because of the now dead cultists, but also the presence of corpses of villagers displayed on the floor, walls and ceiling of the cellar. The state they were in hinting to the terrible horrors they must have suffered in their final moments. Horrors none of the adventures cared to think to long about, lest they go insane themselves. They quickly scav-enged the cellar, and found the summoner had possessed a belt that was obvious magical in nature. They did not found anything that looked like food tough. None of them said it aloud, but they all wondered on what the cultists were feeding out here. And so the three adventurers continued their journey, not knowing what other terrors this dark land had in store for them.

Yes we do! It’s always fun in IRC, we have some regulars that join in every day, and some that drop in once in a while, but there’s always someone online. It’s a fun way to keep in touch and chat with guildies outside of the context of WoW or other games. Joining the IRC channel is easy, you can join from any online client, such as mibbit.com, or use mIRC, or an application through your phone. The Lemmings channel name is #lotl and it is located at the irc.sorcery.net server. Whichever way you choose, you just join the server, and then the channel, and you are in, every Lemming is welcome!

Did you know? The Lemmings have their own IRC channel!By NieNoR

Dear Aunty Lleu,I’m a hunter. I go into battle accompanied by a trusty animal companion. When fighting the Horde, I know we need every advantage we can get, but have I gone too far? My animal companion? The creepiest spider I could find! Is this kind of psychological warfare acceptable? I love spiders, but I know some Tauren find them REALLY freaky. I probably wouldn’t like it if a troll attacked me with a pet dolphin (my personal phobia – don’t ask!). But hey, all’s fair in love and war, right?RegardsWorried in Warsong Gulch

Dear Worrier in WSG,I as a sworn member of the alliance and opportunist extraor-dinaire salute you for being in touch with your inner-meanie; although us Lemmings prefer making love (not warcraft), doing battlegrounds means getting down and dirty. Your aim can not be faulty, your crits can’t be anything else but hefty, and your pet as a result, needs to be creepy. Nonetheless if you’d like to tone it down for that cute blood-elf pally or that undead priest cowering in a corner, you could always consider crafting some informal attire for your pet. Imagine a spider wobbling at you with eight little bunny slippers on, or dressed in a flaming pink leotard? Let’s be honest, even dolphins wouldn’t seem scary like that anymore!Good luck with your knitting,

Love, Aunty Lleu

Hello Aunt Lleu,I have this Moonkin form, but lately I have hardly ever used it. The problem with it has manifested itself a couple of months ago. Whenever I cast Moonfire, I get dizzy. I thought/hoped it would pass all by itself, but it seems to only get worse. Other druids seem unable to help me, and I dare not go to a shaman or a priest.Could you give me any advice about this?Dizzy Druid

Dear Dizzy Druid,It sounds like the casting of Moonfire makes your mana-sugar level drop dangerously low. I’d pre-scribe a daily dose of Aimee’s Dalaran Doughnuts, together with regular baths in any moonwell you’d find on your journeys. If that doesn’t prove to help there’s no other solution than getting over your fear to visit one of our guild’s magical healers; whether driven by Elune, the Light or the Elements, I know for a fact they are all very capable and able to keep your secret!Love, Aunty Lleu

Hello Aunty Lleu,Last time I was charging a boss in a raid, I tripped over a rock. It was rather embarrassing, besides being quite painful as well. I asked the other tanks, and they say I’m too small…Could you please help me?Short Tank

Dear Short Tank,I’m very sorry to hear you felt embarrassed during your enthu-siastic, but unsuccessful charge. Please remember that Lemmings like laughing with you, rather than at you, despite joking about how your legs might have been too short to jump over that pebble. But if this is a matter that keeps you up at night let me tell you one thing; size doesn’t matter, it’s how you use it!Love, Aunty Lleu

Dear Aunty Lleu,I’m a mage, and I feel like I may be addicted to fire. I love settings things on fire, with Living Bombs, Fireballs, Inferno Blasts and my favour-ite, Pyroblasts! The feeling of timing a perfect Combustion on a raid boss while he has a Living Bomb, Ignite and Pyroblast on him, is just pure euphoria! I get the feeling my fellow Lemmings may be worried about me, and I try to divert at-tention sometimes by giving people free magic cakes, but I don’t know if it’s working. What should I do Auntie Lleu? Is this dangerous?A troubled fire mage.

Dear troubled Fire Mage,Maybe your spellpower is going to your head; it sounds like you’re getting a little paranoid! I’ve never met a mage who wasn’t crazy about his magical abilities or who doesn’t skip around giggling and crit-happy during raids; it seems to be part of the class, and that’s why they’re a joy to have around! Also, as long as they’re willing to share, we can all forgive them for having the munchies for their mana-cakes.Love, Lleu

Dear Aunty Lleu,I am a very famous star reporter, and because of this, I have to write to you anonymously. I have noticed that many people I work with seem to show such affection towards me, I sometimes find it hard to maintain a profes-sional attitude. Especially the many gorgeous ladies I encounter frequently due to my incredibly sensational profession seem to display this. Could you give me some tips about how to handle this?Anonymous star reporter, Mage first class, doctor in the arcane arts, Illus-trious Grandmaster Tailor.

Dear Anonymous star reporter,I’m not surprised the tokens of your literate affections are taking a liking to you; with a series of titles and the skill to dress to impress even auntie gets curious about your identity! I think the best solution would be to join me for a cuppa, to judge the severity of your problem and giving a fitting advice, naturally. Meet me in the Lion’s Pride Inn tonight; I’ll be carrying a red rose!Love, Aunty Lleu

Dear Aunty Lleu,My question is: can one be a true Lemming while playing on the ’wrong’ / ’dark’ side of an MMO? Are there values within the Lemmings belief system that possibly could conflict with pushing the roleplaying envelope within a game? Can an undead warlock be mean to a questing Alliance toon? Or, in my case, I play the Empire side in SWTOR, and though I despise the Sith I equally despise the Jedi. I would like to take that into the game world when coming across Jedi toons. Is there a clear divide between Lemmingsness and ingame roleplaying choic-es, or is there a muddy, grey area in between?Morally Confused Roleplayer

Dear Morally Confused Roleplayer,I have no knowledge of your Siths and Jedi’s, is this something that will come up in MoP? I guess we’ll see on the 24th of September! One thing is sure; although I am all about muddy grey areas (who doesn’t enjoy a good day at the spa) I got to say that any undead war-lock killing my Elwynn boars will be /rasped at, roleplay-ing or no!Love, Aunty Lleu

The Little Teapot began 15.07.2011 as a series of questions posted on Fridays for the boring moments at work. Originally the fantastic idea of JoeSnow, it was taken over by Chiani on 23.09.2011 and has ran every week (except two) since. Various Lemmings have suggest-ed questions and there are a core of regular Lemming repliers. The Teapot covers diverse questions that are fun, personal, and serious. It would not work as well as it does without the honesty and respect for each other that people show.

The Little Teapot may sound a silly off-topic post that allows people a few moments escapism; however it has proven an important way to get to know and understand each better. The Teapot allows people to learn things about their fellow Lemmings and brings us all closer together.

Here are some of the lighter responses from previous Teapots - they will remain anonymous to protect the guilty!

earth is about to blow up! you have “won” the ge-netic lottery, and will be sent of in a spaceship to preserve humanity on some distant planet. Due to weight restrictions you can only take 1 kg of personal belongings with you. What do you take along? This(ese) item(s) might decide the future

culture of mankind!“Headache pills will also serve another purpose,

wouldn’t want the lucky lady to have any reason not to keep her end of the bargain! Some blue pills (30g – NOT the one from the matrix) as I’d hate to let the human race down by not achieving my goal (It is quite traumatic to watch a planet explode). The spirit could also serve a dual purpose to relax… I’d prob-ably get red rose too (90g), you know, start on the right foot!”

“How sweet you all are … pictures, books, booze, pills, trousers. I am going with a Beretta M9 9mm with half a clip of ammunition. A full clip would send me over the 1 k.g. When the world is going to pot, I want firearms!”

What scenes from a book/film make you cry?“Me? No love... something in my eye!”

if you were the king or Queen of the world, what would you do your first day?

“The world is not big enough for me! So I would immediately start a space program to colonise the surrounding planets.”

“I would immediately declare a four-day weekend for everyone in the World. The weekend would start on a THUR night, and end on a TUES morning “

“I would find the biggest ship I can, stand on the Prow and shout “I’M THE KING OF THE WORLD, WOOOOOOOOO”

your favourite photo/s and why?“Can you get more American than dressing up

some road kill like a Cowboy and selling it for $50?”

if you were an animal (real or WoW related), what would it be? And why?

“A Lemming!! It’s cute, fluffy and small... adds me up pretty good”

“I’d like to think of myself as a cat because I tend to go my own way, am picky about people I like and can stretch my claws if I deem it necessary... You know, when I’m not cuddling up, sleeping or eating”

The little Teapot: Those little things that ReAlly irritate me....

“Oh yeah also warlocks xD”

if you could go back in time to when you were young(er), what advice would you give to your-

self?“Take the blue pill, kid”“That haircut maybe isn’t the best idea”

if you could create a new class, what would it be?

“Zangief class (heroic). 1 talent tree - 1 talent point - 1 ability - “Spinning Pile Drive”; no gear slots, save for underpants, feet, and wrists that will only accept the item “Red Thong”, “Red Boots” and “Red Wristbands”.”

if lemmings was a horde guild, which race/gen-der would your character be?

“I would have an army of Goblins instead of an army of gnomes ofc. No doubt about it!”

“Blood Elf... something elegant about them... not sure why though... probably because they are the least horde looking!”

Which famous person should never be sent to negotiate with the very first non-terrestrial intel-ligent life forms we discover to avoid risking an all out interstellar war? Also – which lemming

would you send or not send? And why?“Neti, because he’d be all excited about interstel-

lar travel and would squeal “OK TO GOOOO” and the aliens would zap him in the face”

“Joe he’s always got a good amount of fun stuff to whip out if the conversation dries up! ‘So, I bet you’re tired after your trip… yeah… so… picnic anyone’! – *Poof ‘now I look like you’!”

“Definitely Hal, he’s the calmest person in the his-tory of forever and would be able to talk them down if they got a bit angry – no doubt they’d leave with some stray paper zeppelins in their backpacks. Lem-ming I wouldn’t send – Rin, he’d shout “Pusha tha Buttonnn” and we’d all get blown up!”

The little Teapot: The Darkmoon Faire“Almost all the seasonal stuff is a waste of time

imho.”“Lol this is WOW, - most of the content is a time

sink”

The Little Teapot: What is the first thing you would do if you met an alien?

“Ask him/her/it to, please, please, please, go easy with all the probing”

“I would turn around and slowly, angrily, walk away and blame myself for never learning Klingon.”

*The Teapot is always in need of new suggestions, so in order to keep this topic going, please send any thoughts onto Chiani.

Do you think druids can tank?: Those fluffy things?

Why would we enjoy grouping with you?: …Other than that, I’m a rather low profile on chat, I wouldn’t

annoy anyone, I think I can do my job efficiently, at least with some practice, and I think I would be good in teamworking. (I would pull the aggro

from the healer and kill myself if the raid keeps go-ing :P)

What question would you ask yourself if you were us and what is your answer?: “There are two kinds of people in the world, those that know every-thing, and those that know nothing. Which are

you?” I know nothing.

Your favourite thing to do in-game is: Fish :D or PvP. I should try fishing IN PvP....

Why would we enjoy grouping with you?: Because I am the most incredible modest person you have ever met! Ignore that... I am a mature person, who enjoys the game. I think this will lead to those

playing with me to enjoy it as well.

What is your main reason for wanting to join?: to spend time chatting with people and doing things

with friendly people. I am looking forward to a time where the chat screen will be filled with chat again and I can spend time having fun with others

rather than just going in silent LFG’s.

What do you see as the main perks you would personally gain from joining?: I’m hoping that I’ll get to meet new people and be part of a friendly sociable environment, I don’t feel like playing if I

have no one to share it with.

What question would you ask yourself if you were us and what is your answer?: I can’t really think of one, but if had to ask anything, I probably would ask are you an evil gnome bent on world domina-

tion? I’d have to answer no.

You see a hordie PVP enabled in front of an in-stance, all alone, and you’re surrounded by alliance- What do you do?: Well that depends. If it’s someone I know I’ll either kill them, hug them, or put on a fancy hat and dance, depending on what I think they’d most appreciate. (I always save a hug for Aszune horde in BGs, I still kill them, but I hug them to death first). If it’s someone I don’t know, I’d probably leave them alone providing they weren’t up to mischief.

What is your main reason for wanting to join?: I want the word Lemmings in my job title!!

Your guildleader just bubbled while tanking Hak-kar in zul’Gurub. What do you do?: I imagine laugh my socks off.

Your guildleader just bubbled while tanking Hakkar in zul’Gurub. What do you do?: Start looking for feign death, wonder why I can’t find it, realise I’m on the wrong character and die? Dunno never happened to me but sounds like fun :D

You have almost enough for an epic flying mount, but are fed up with questing. What do you do?: Go mining.....on foot :D

What question would you ask yourself if you were us and what is your answer?: My favourite question: Why are elephants big, grey and wrinkly? Be-cause if they were small, white and smooth they’d be aspirin. Failing that, my second favourite question: Would you like more cake *name re-moved*? To which the answer is *always* yes please.

You see a hordie PVP enabled in front of an in-stance, all alone, and you’re surrounded by alli-ance- What do you do?: /lick if he’s a tauren /smell if he’s undead or ignore them otherwise. Let’s face it, I’m a gnome they always mock me!

How Jump Three was createdBack in May 2012 Vico posted a thread asking for sugges-

tions on Guild Promotion. As one of the suggestions Chiani posted “Another Jump magazine taking us into the next expansion would be great – but I imagine hard work. Maybe asking for volunteers could get a group together to do this?”. Dommens quite rightly replied that Jump magazine is more as “something from Lemmings to Lemmings” and not just for advertising, and so Chiani did not give it another thought. Dommens however did.

Later Dommens approached Chiani through IRC asking if we could work together to make Jump 3 a reality. We dis-cussed our strengths, weaknesses and thoughts on how we would work together and quickly realised we made a great team with our complementary skills.

We set out our vision and a practical plan for Jump, Issue 3 before presenting it first to Neti and Wilgje, and then the guild leadership team to gain their blessings to work on it. With this granted, and advice gratefully received, we contacted mem-bers of the PR team and were able to get writers matched to the articles we had hoped to have. Our most important consideration in this part of the process was that the people who were writing something had fun doing so. We spent a lot of time making sure people had the perfect article for them to write.

After advertising in guild, things may have appeared to stop moving, but behind the scenes, we were constantly in contact with people on the progress of their articles, writing our own and reviewing others, hopefully providing helpful feedback.

This process has taken almost five months, and in the last stages Nienor joined us to help edit the articles. This was a huge help for us as his fresh eyes and enthusiasm really speeded up the final push. A huge thank-you for his input. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the people that volunteered time to write articles for Jump - everyone has done a fantastic job and worked hard to help make this the biggest and best Jump yet.

Looking back now, Chiani’s comment on imagining it to be hard work was very accurate! We have spent countless hours and days working on this, and we are so very proud of the result. We feel it shows once again how wonderful the Lem-mings are, and how selfless people can be in giving time to create something amazing for the community.
