PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE INTO SCHOOL

GROUNDS

In the interests of student safety, parents and caregivers are not permitted to drive onto school

grounds at any time, including before or after school, to drop off or collect students, or to attend meetings

with staff.

The only exceptions to this are when either you or your passenger has a disability or if you are picking up a sick or

injured student.

School staff and drivers of visiting commercial vehicles are reminded that all roads within the school are shared zones with a speed limit of

5kph.

STUDENT SAFETY is up to ALL OF US THANK YOU FOR PLAYING YOUR PART

On a note of celebration, our own Year 11 student Yohan performed for the Principal cohort to great acclaim.

Yohan performed two songs: an original composition Vivid; and a Tom Jones song Never fall in love again. I had a proud Principal moment when many of my colleagues approached me to acknowledge his outstanding performance. Thank you Yohan for representing our school so magnificently.

On another note, congratulations to Yohan on his success through the audition process, to once again be a featured artist in this year’s Schools Spectacular held at Qudos Bank Arena in November. Congratulations Yohan on two fantastic achievements.

Professional Learning at Penno and BYOD During Terms 1 and 2 this year, teachers at Pennant Hills High School have been immersed in professional learning on the topic of Technology. This has included work focused on improving formative assessment strategies, designing and building units of work with a technology focus and embracing the tech savvy students we have here at Penno. All this work will culminate in a BYOD focus for Year 7 next term.

A reminder to all families that we are a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) school. I encourage all Year 7 students to have their devices ready for use at the commencement of Term 3 and ask all parents and caregivers to assist with the process. Advice about our BYOD Policy can be found on our website.

Spirit Week Next week is Spirit Week at Pennant Hills High School. Sometimes these events occur each year without much thought for their origins, but our Student Leadership Council (SLC) has put together a video that speaks clearly to the origins of this very important and significant week in our history at Penno. I encourage everyone to view the video on the front page of our website or through this link: https://youtu.be/uuXJmCbr_Os.

I continue to marvel at the contribution our SLC makes to our school and once again celebrate the importance of a student voice and the connection they make with our staff and the wider school community. Enjoy.

Focus On Ability Film Festival Once again our Special Education Unit has produced an outstanding film to enter into the Focus on Ability Film Festival called Penno’s Got Talent. The short film can be viewed through our website or via this link: https://www.focusonability.com.au/foa/films/1849.html

I encourage all families and friends to vote for this entertaining production and support our Special Education Unit as they strive to win this competition for the second year in a row.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Music Festival Wednesday evening saw the culmination of some very hard work by our Music Ensembles and those of our partner primary schools.

We were treated to two fabulous concerts that were interspersed with performances by our Year 12 Music students who are preparing for both their Trial Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination and the HSC Performance examination, scheduled for next term.

As expected, the concerts were outstanding. It was great to be part of the audience and watch potential Pennant Hills High School students from our partner primary school bands, perform with such joy and enthusiasm.

Then to see how those initial talents have developed as our own students took the stage, and the level of skill they have attained was indeed impressive. Our students in our extra curricular ensembles show excellent dedication, commitment and enthusiasm. Their sacrifices were evident in the magnificent performances they delivered.

Congratulations to our local primary school bands from West Pennant Hills Public, Pennant Hills Public School and Thornleigh West Public School. Thank you to their respective conductors: Mr Andrew Hamblin, Mr Dave Odams and Mr David Bell.

Thank you to our own Ensemble Directors: Mr John Buckley, Mr James Loughnan and Ms Rachel Kelly for their hard work and dedication to our students.

Thank you to Ms Janelle Dennis, Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) for her unwavering support of our music program and Mrs Anne Bassett, Music Ensembles Administrator for her preparation and coordination of this huge event. A very special thank you to Mrs Carol Coomber, Music Ensembles Director for her commitment to this and so many other performances, which give our students the very best opportunities for success within our fantastic music program.

Principal’s Conference Last week I had the pleasure of attending the NSW Secondary Principals’ Annual Conference in Manly.

Amongst the many keynote speakers at the conference was our new Education Minister Ms Sarah Mitchell, who showed that she was keen to listen to all stakeholders in the education process. Ms Mitchell also very proudly pointed out that she was a successful graduate of Public Education as an alumni of Gunnedah High School.

On day 1 we heard from Mr Pasi Sahlberg and Mr Adrian Piccoli from the Gonski Institute at UNSW, Ms Jane Caro presented on ‘Anxiety, Expectations and Control’ and Mr Eddie Woo, who had 360 principals in the palm of his hand as he presented how mathematics can ‘Get to the Heart – Teaching for Disposition’.

On day 2 Dr Judy Willis presented ‘How emotion impacts the brain’s successful learning and what to do about it’ and I took my first real sojourn into neuro plasticity. One of her quotes that resonated with me was “Teaching isn’t brain surgery – it’s harder! And I’ve done both”. We also heard from Professor John Fischetti, Head of School at the University of Newcastle, who presented ‘A Different Kind of Teacher for a Different Kind of School’. His ideas were intriguing and I will be pursuing a potential partnership between him and Pennant Hills High School over the coming months.

HEROES OR VILLAINS? HEROES!

Writing success and publication continues to be a reward for the students of Pennant Hills High School.

Year 9 students Maisie and Claire, having entered a writing competition run by Better Read Than Dead, a bookshop located in Newtown, achieved success. Their stories were included in the anthology Heroes and Villains which was launched at the bookshop last Saturday.

Maisie’s story, Little Boy Murder, is a classic and brief whodunit. Claire’s story, The Silencer, tackles the dark themes of domestic violence and remorse.

A copy of the anthology will be housed in our school library later this year, so keep any eye out for these talented young writers! Congratulations girls on an outstanding achievement.

CATCHING UP WITH SCIENCE

Out and About... Year 11 Agriculture students travelled 85km southwest of Sydney to visit a beef cattle farm at the Camden Environmental Educational Centre.

Students observed different breeds of beef cattle and participated in soil testing, sustainable farming, cattle herding and muscle and fat scoring. They even managed to get their hands dirty mustering cattle and determining the market specification of individual cattle. Students visited state of the art cattle yard designed by Professor Temple Grandin, who is a renowned animal scientist.

Overall the day was an eye opening experience for the agricultural students who observed how soil, pasture management and animal production can all be tied up into a profitable beef cattle enterprise.

Year 11 Chemistry students visited Australia’s only nuclear reactor, ANSTO at Lucas Heights. The reactor at ANSTO is an internationally renowned research and production facility. Students were able to see the reactor up close and find out about the importance of nuclear technologies.

Year 12 Physics have spent a day at Sydney University as a part of their Depth Study work. At the university, students were able to get their hands on some cool pieces of physics tech and observe recreations of ground breaking experiments that changed the understanding of key scientific ideas.

The Science Faculty has been very busy out and about with several excursions still to come: Year 11 Biology is attending Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre, Year 12 Biology is attending the Museum of Human Diseases and Year 12 Chemistry will be attending Sydney University. All excursions provide our students with valuable educational experiences that enhance their classroom learning.

STEM Challenge This week, 9S1 were given the opportunity to attend a Science and Engineering Challenge. This event is always well received by students as it showcases their problem-solving skills and demonstrates real-world applications of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) beyond their classroom experiences. The competition is held over a number of heats and winning schools are given further opportunities to compete against other winning schools. More information about their experiences will follow in another edition of Jumbunna. Best of luck to our team!

VALID Trial Testing Year 9 and 10 Science classes have been given the opportunity to participate in a trialling event for VALID. The trial will test potential exam items for VALID Science 8 for use in 2020 and beyond. These trials help ensure the quality and relevance of the data schools receive about what students know and can do in science. They also contribute valuable feedback to the organisers of VALID to ensure that future assessments are high in quality and rigour.

Year 10 have completed their trials over the past 2 weeks, and Year 9 will do their trial in their Science class during Weeks 8 and 9 of this term. Thank you Year 9 and 10 for your participation in this valuable project.

Melodie Frida, Head Teacher Science

Student Spotlights

Year 12 - Liam Liam leaves people speechless. He gives 100% of himself wherever he goes always with a smile on his face. He has a very powerful aura filled with kindness, happiness and generosity. His

musical talents are impressive as are his sporting abilities. He is 10 feet tall and all heart - a friendly giant and someone you are proud to call a friend.

Year 10 - Abbey If you have never watched or been to an ice hockey game then you are missing a treat. It is one of the fastest, and arguably one of the toughest, games in the world! Abbey Shepherd has been selected to play in the NSW Bombers as part of the Australian Women’s Tier 2 Show Case Series. The first round of this series has been played already with NSW sitting atop the ladder. The second round is scheduled to be played in July in Adelaide.
