    PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Last week, I attended the annual NSW Secondary Principal Council Conference. Secondary Principals Leading Innovation, Creativity and Engagement was the theme. During the course of the three days, I found myself challenging my own, more traditional thoughts and looking at how this innovation could be effective in the direction that Pennant Hills High School takes in the future.

Keynote speakers that resonated with me were Simon Breakspeare on Agile Leadership, Yong Zhao on realising personalisable education and Piet Langstraat on the culture of contribution. As always, a highlight of the conference was the opportunity to liaise with and share, quality ideas around engagement at school with colleagues across the state. No doubt, I will reflect on the conference for many weeks to come.

Music Festival On Wednesday night, I had the pleasure of attending our annual Music Festival in the MPC with performances from our own sensational ensembles and our partner primary school bands.

These performances were interspersed with solo acts from our Year 12 Music students as they begin the final stretch in their preparation for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) performance examinations next term. Our Year 12 musicians were indeed impressive and I wish them good luck with their exams. Throughout the course of the evening, we were taken on a journey from the film music of the Blue’s Brothers, to Percy Grainger, Piazzolla, the Beatles, Thelonius Monk, a choral performance of The Ancient City and finally the evocative Arabesque. They were all very entertaining Congratulations to our partner Public School bands from Pennant Hills, West Pennant Hills, Normanhurst West and Thornleigh West on their wonderful performances also.

Sydney University Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Teacher Enrichment Academy Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the University of Sydney for the culminating presentations of the STEM Teacher Enrichment Academy projects. As expected, the Pennant Hills High School presentation was extremely impressive. Our school was able to present two different projects, one focusing on water filtration systems and the other, through the work of our Special Education faculty, on planter boxes. The collaborative practices of the teams to provide this opportunity for our students and the obvious joy students had in participating in the project, was apparent in every frame of the video. I encourage all families to view the presentation which will be uploaded to our Facebook page next week.

Congratulations to our STEM team: Mr Brad Wilson, Head Teacher Industrial Arts (Relieving); Mr Lali Gill, Teacher Industrial Arts; Mr Joe Antoon, Teacher Mathematics; Mr Lucas Ctercteko, Teacher Industrial

Arts; and Mrs Eileen Clements, Teacher Special Education.

Focus on Ability 2018 Short Film Festival Once again our Special Education unit has prepared a video for the festival. The clip is about the planter box I mentioned earlier that our students have been working on. It is a wonderful insight to one of the many initiatives we undertake.

I encourage our whole community to vote for our production by clicking on the link below: http://www.focusonability.com.au/confirmVote.asp?VerificationToken=9B4C3D8E0F0G0H5I5J

Staffing Changes There have been a number of staff changes this term. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Mrs Melodie Frida who was successful at merit selection for the position of Head Teacher Science at Pennant Hills High School. Many of you will know the fine educator Mrs Frida is and we are looking forward to working with her in this new role.

Secondly, congratulations to Mr James Boyer, Head Teacher PDHPE who was successful at merit selection and will take up a new role in State Office as a Sport and Physical Activity Coordinator working with schools across the state. Mr Boyer will still be visible around the school next term as he continues to work with his Year 12 class in preparation for the HSC. We wish Mr Boyer well as he begins this secondment. We welcome Mrs Valmé Kruger to the role of Head Teacher PDHPE (Relieving).

And finally, this week we welcomed back Miss Amanda De Carli to her role of Deputy Principal at Pennant Hills High School. Miss De Carli has taken over the Deputy position for Year 7 and Year 12.

Invoices Outstanding invoices were mailed to families last week and I encourage all families to attend to these at your earliest convenience so that we can continue to provide the breadth of learning opportunities for our students.

Coming up... I am looking forward to Spirit Week next week. This is an annual celebration of the strong friendships and sense of community in our magnificent school. The week is packed with various themes each day, great food, a talent quest and finishes on Friday with a multi-cultural celebration that is second to none. I encourage all students to get involved and enjoy the festivities.

All students, staff, family and friends are invited to a fun night of entertainment at the Drama Showcase scheduled for Week 10 on Tuesday 3 July from 6.30pm-7.30pm in the Drama Studio. The audience will be wowed by the Drama Ensemble's play The Wonderful Wide World of People by Michael Pryor and Stage 5 Drama student performances.

    ATHLETICS REPORT

2018 School Athletics Carnival Our annual Athletics Carnival was held earlier this term. The record warm spell of sunshine made for a wonderful day. With numerous student volunteers, Prefects, Sport Prefects and staff, the day was a great success.

With music blaring, a BBQ sizzling and Year 12’s in costume for their last school carnival, the atmosphere was buzzing for competitors and spectators alike. It was fantastic to see all grades joining in on the fun and supporting their houses for that important and prestigious title of Best House.

The day commenced with the long distance races and progressed to the track events, off track events, shorter distance races and finally finished off with our Senior Boys challenging Mr Williams, PDHPE teacher in a 100m sprint - the boys won the challenge (this time)…. The school spirit displayed by our newly elected House Captains, was unforgettable!

Congratulations to everyone who participated on the day and good luck to the students who qualified for the Zone Athletics Team.

Of course the success of these whole school events are always due to the planning and organisation expertise of several key people. Three to four weeks prior to the carnival, the PDHPE staff selected a group of dedicated students to commence preparation for the big day. This included the collection of data paramount to the running of the event, preparation of all the equipment both sporting and otherwise and motivating all members of the school community to attend and participate.

Weeks before the day, computers, software and data are set up for data entry at the oval. Mrs Kruger, Sport Captains and Sport Vice Captains are all involved in these preparations. A very special mention to Year 11 student Matthew who operated and coordinated the technology and data on the day. Matthew was recently trained in the Meet and Team Manager Program, currently used by our school, to process the results. This program is used worldwide for collating and processing results at major sporting events. Matthew also mentored and trained Year 10 students Kevin and Alex who, every Friday morning before school, trained how to setup, use and trouble-shoot the program so that it can continue to be run by students for years to come.

On the day of the carnival, the data entry students were constantly and without respite, entering the results of the events. Throughout the day, track and field events were constantly adding to an almost never-ending pile of events. Even after the carnival finished, much time was devoted to finalising the results so that Age Champions, record breakers and Zone teams could be identified.

A huge thank you to the PDHPE faculty; Mrs Kruger, Mr Boyer, Mrs Stewart and Mr Toohey, who, together with all the teachers and helpers, contributed to the smooth running on the day.

Congratulations to Redgum House who were the overall winners of the Athletics Carnival. Please see the following page for results.

    2018 Zone Athletics Carnival

Last Wednesday, Penno students met at 6.30am in the Bus Bay to travel to Sydney Olympic Athletics Track, Homebush to compete at the Zone Athletics Carnival. There were 3 full buses of enthusiastic and talented competitors, ready to take on the challenges of the day. Unaffected by the cold weather, our students warmed up and prepared for their events. The group showed a strong commitment to our school as they competed valiantly and to the absolute best of their abilities.

We were plagued by injuries across all age groups but still managed to finish in 3rd place on the day.

The Special Education Unit as usual, dedicated themselves to every race with the support and passionate guidance of Mr Raper and Mrs Clements. A special thank you to all the teachers who gave up their time to an event that is very challenging, but with extremely rewarding results.

Congratulations to all those students who showed great sportsmanship by volunteering and stepping up to fill in for events wherever the need was. Our fantastic school spirit could be seen all throughout the day with outstanding performances from each athlete.

Pennant Hills High School hosts the Zone Athletics Carnival, which means organisation and preparation for the event commences months beforehand. The Carnival is attended by nine schools within the Ku Ring Gai Zone and is conducted in partnership with NSW Athletics, who makes their experienced and very competent officials available for the day. There is a lot of preparation needed for a Carnival of this size and it is not only a time-consuming exercise but a challenging one also - ensuring that everything goes according to plan on the day. A big thank you to all teachers in the Zone who contributed to a very busy but successful Zone Athletics Carnival which started and finished on time as per program schedule, a credit to all teachers who took up their responsibilities for the day without hesitation.

The Carnival was held in Week 5 at St Ives Showground. Penno finished a close 3rd behind Cherrybrook Technology High School and Killara High School. A margin of a mere 49 points separated the three top schools in what was a classic epic 3-way battle on the day.

The final overall points score, with lowest points being best, was 1st Cherrybrook Technology 1223 points, 2nd Killara 1254 points, 3rd Pennant Hills 1272 points, 4th St Ives 1513 points, 5th Carlingford 1763 points, 6th Turramurra 2052 points, and then 7th Chatswood, 8th Kuring-Gai and 9th Galston.

    IT’S TIME FOR PDHPE

Premiers Sporting Challenge – Sports Leadership Program In Week 6 of this term, Pennant Hills High School hosted the annual Sports Leadership – Learning to Lead Day.

Approximately 100 young leaders from: Pennant Hills; West Pennant Hills; John Purchase; Beecroft; Thornleigh West and Oakhill Drive Public Schools’ participated in the program which was facilitated by our Year 9 and 10 Sport Leaders.

The Leaders facilitated 40 minute workshops on a variety of sports including AFL, League Tag, Basketball, Netball, Initiative Games, Cricket and Football. The aim of the workshops were to explicitly teach coaching and leadership skills to the younger students through participation in games and activities.

The day was a great success. The participants learnt valuable skills in coaching and leading, and will have the opportunity to put these skills into practice at their own schools whilst Year 9 and 10 students were grateful for the opportunity to practise their coaching. All students actively participated in a day of physical activity and had a great deal of fun on what was an overcast day with brief glimpses of sunshine.

Congratulations to all students involved and good luck in your future as leaders.

Year 11 Crossroads The program has continued this term with four events already held. Earlier this month, we were visited by over 20 General Practitioners who volunteer their time for the GPs in Schools Program. Students spent two hours with a GP who led them through a discussion on health issues that affect young people including sexual health and drug use. In Week 5 students were involved in a study skill session facilitated by Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Education Services. As outlined in the last edition of Jumbunna there are several resources available to help parents, help their kids with study skills. I strongly urge you to access these materials if you need some guidance.

Go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au enter the username: pennanthillshs and the password: 77success.

Next term, the Crossroads program will involve a day of small seminars focusing on financial literacy, safe partying, road safety and mental wellbeing. In Term 4, Year 11 will attend an adventure day at Vision Valley, scheduled for the last week of school. There is a lot to look forward to.

Sports Leisure and Recreation (SLR) Year 11 students studying SLR have been completing a unit of work on resistance training and have been spending some lessons at Fitness First Pennant Hills. Thank you to Fitness First for accommodating our students.

    READING WITH THE LIBRARY

What’s popular at Penno? Here are the most popular reads this term:

Reading Challenge Reminders It’s not too late to begin the Premier’s Reading Challenge! You only need to record 20 books that you have read from the PRC 7-9 list: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Or…why not try the Penno Reading Challenge? Log onto your student portal, open G-Suite and record 10 or more books that you have enjoyed reading this year: bit.ly/pennoreading

Need help writing bibliographies? A reminder that bibliography guides can be found on the Oliver library home page. To access Oliver, log onto the Pennant Hills High School portal and select the red “library enquiry” link in the top left corner.

Long lost photos Are you missing school photos from over 25 years ago? If you attended Pennant Hills in 1994, 1996 or 1997 then this could be your lucky day. We have found unclaimed photos from these years and would love to re-unite them with their owners. Please contact the school for more information.

Puzzles and Conundrums Don’t forget to check the library door for our latest puzzles. We have enjoyed the lively discussions about Yanni or Laurel, hidden faces and optical illusions. Stay tuned...

Year 12 Our Senior students enjoy visiting the library for more than just studying - they can often be seen relaxing on a study break

    Happy reading!

    Merise Feneley, Teacher Librarian (Relieving)

    SPECTACULAR HONOURS

Congratulations to Year 10 student Yohan who has been selected as a featured artist for the 2018 Schools Spectacular - The Greatest this year, following several rounds of highly competitive auditions. As an artist, it is a great honour and privilege for Yohan to achieve this recognition.

Yohan has also been invited to participate in the live auditions for the Talent Development Project coming up at the end of this term. We look forward to hearing about both performances in due course.

    THIS TERM IN SCIENCE ...

Term 2 has been a busy time for the Science faculty.

We welcomed two new teachers Ms Hannah King and Mr Denis Rump, who joined us at the beginning of the term. Ms King is teaching Science, Biology and Chemistry, whilst Mr Rump is teaching Science, Agriculture and Chemistry.

Students have been busy with approximately 60 students from Year 7-10 participating in the prestigious ICAS Science Examination which is run through University of New South Wales (UNSW). We anticipate some impressive results from a number of our talented Science students.

Three of our Year 10 students have been invited to participate in Sydney University Gifted and Talented Discovery Program. James, Geon Ha and Emily all placed in the top 7% of candidates to qualify for this competitive program. At the program, students have the opportunity to engage with University teaching staff and current researchers, access first-class facilities and make friends with people who have a mutual interest in science. The program will run for three days during the July School Holidays. Congratulations to these students. We look forward to hearing about your experiences next term.

The Kickstart Science Workshops at Sydney University are aimed at HSC science students and are designed to meet areas of the science syllabus that require equipment or expertise in areas that many schools may not be able to provide. Chemistry students have already had the opportunity to attend a workshop to participate in a number of first hand investigations, including a chance to observe Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, used for the highly sensitive analysis of very low concentrations of metals in water. Students also witnessed spectacular flame tests for many of the salts. Kickstart Biology excursion is scheduled for Week 10 of this term.

Melodie Frida, Head Teacher Science (Relieving)

YEAR 8 WEEPING WOMAN COLLABORATIVE WORK

Our two Year 8 elective taster Visual Arts classes have been busy working on a collaborative artwork. Each student was asked to replicate a section of Pablo Picasso’s artwork The Weeping Woman. To successfully complete this artwork, students had to reference their own section and those of the students around them, to ensure that when completed all the pieces would fit together to form the image. They have done a wonderful job and we look forward to being able to display it at the upcoming art exhibition in Term 3.
