Chamber Celebrates July As Membership Appreciation Month

According to Merriam-Webster, a Chamber of Commerce is an association of business people to promote commercial and industrial interest in the community. The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce strives to do this and much more. Our mission statement is “providing value added services and programs, creating opportunities, for our members and improving the quality of life in Shelby County.” We strive to carry out our mission each and every day. However, we could not do it without you—our members!

Each July, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce holds its Membership Appreciation luncheon, offering a FREE lunch to all of our Chamber members. In recognition of our members, the Chamber staff, Board, and Ambassadors will be grilling brats, hot dogs, and hamburgers and serving up side dishes. All meats and side dishes are purchased from our local Chamber members.

We are grateful to have so many that are involved in our community by donating their products, services, and their valuable time. Frequently, the board and staff ask our members to contribute by purchasing tickets, attending events, and volunteering to assist with planning. We value your contributions and want to take the opportunity to express our appreciation.

Please plan to join us on July 10th from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Chamber office (501 North Harrison Street)! It will give you a chance to visit with other Chamber members, the Chamber board and staff, and tour the Porter Center.

Following our theme of membership appreciation, the following articles are in honor of two Chamber members who graciously donate to our events year after year. These two, Walmart* and Sanders Jewelry, were inadvertently omitted from the June Issue of Chamber Chatter in which we thanked our donors for Cash Bash. Walmart* and Sanders Jewelry are both great Chamber supporters and we are very sorry that they were omitted. Please read the articles pertaining to these members to learn more about them!

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Staff would like to thank Aaron Wine for his service to the Chamber. Aaron joined the Chamber Board in 2010. During that time, Aaron supported many of the Chamber’s annual events by participating on planning committees. In 2012, Aaron was named President-Elect and was serving this year as the Chamber Board President. Please join us as we congratulate Aaron and wish him and his family much success in their new endeavor. Aaron, whose recent role was Manager of Knauf Plant #3, has been promoted to Plant Manager of Knauf’s Lanett, Alabama plant. We will truly miss his leadership and his friendship. Good luck to you, Dawn and your children as you embark on this new adventure. Sincerely,Julie Metz, Executive DirectorCourtney Chapella, Executive AssistantJordan England, Executive AssistantShelby County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

Walmart*

Walmart* located at 2500 Progress Parkway, has been a strong community partner for several years, partnering often with the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. Walmart* originally opened in Shelbyville in 1986. Today, six of the original associates are still with the company. Nine additional employees have 25 or more years of service at our local Walmart*.

The first Walmart* store was opened on July 2, 1962 by Sam Walton in Roger Arkansas. Sam Walton, known to his employees as “Mr. Sam,” was born in 1918 in Oklahoma. He served in the military from 1943 until 1945. At the end of his military service, Sam and his wife Helen move to Iowa and then to Arkansas. He opened his first store, Walton’s 5 & 10 on the downtown square in Bentonville, Arkansas. His dime store had early success that lead to him opening the first Walmart* in 1962.

Sam Walton’s strategy for his company was “The Lowest Prices Anytime, Anywhere.” By 1967, Walton had opened 24 stores totaling $12.7 million in sales. Five years later, a total of 51 stores existed with $78 million in sales. Today, Walmart* has approximately 10,800 stores in 27 counties totaling over $440 billion.

Walmart* carries almost anything you need for day-to-day living. From their supermarket, tire and lube, and optical centers, and much more, Walmart* really is your one stop shop. To contact Walmart*, call (317)392-4940.

Heritage House Administrator Bill Pierce honored with prestigious AANAC Administrator of the Year Award in San AntonioCongratulations to Bill Pierce, Heritage House’s Administrator, on his AANAC Administrator of the Year Award!

The 2013 AANAC Awards were held in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, May 3rd. Nine individuals were honored with different awards or scholarships.

Pierce has been a licensed administrator for almost 20 years and has been Heritage House’s administrator for 10 years.

He felt honored to be considered when he received notification of his nomination for the award. But when he was told he was selected for the award, “I honestly thought someone was punking me!” he said.

So what makes a great healthcare administrator? Pierce said the key is to never believe you know it all and constantly be willing to learn. “It’s important to know enough to make informed decisions, be approachable, know your staff and managerial assets, and most importantly, put your residents’ care and needs first.”

Visit Heritage House at 2309 South Miller Avenue or call (317)398-9781.

Newly formed Blue River Sports Authority plans to foster youth and adult recreational sports in Shelby County.

Shelby County Tourism and Visitor’s Bureau has launched the Blue River Sports Authority, an organization designed to promote youth and adult sports initiatives, and utilize the superb facilities offered within Shelby County.

“We are already hosting regional and national qualifying events, from youth girls softball to the Silver Fox National Qualifiers, and we would like to grow this base to encourage more activities and visitors to the area,” states Larry Lux, Tourism Board President. Shelby County already boasts superior outdoor and indoor facilities, including Blue River Memorial Park, Garrett Gymnasium and the four county schools facilities. The

implementation of this organization will afford more events the opportunity to come to Shelby County to grow and promote their respective sporting events.

“Our mission statement defines us very well,” declares board member Gary Nolley: Blue River Sports Authority is a non-profit corporation designed to foster the growth and promotion of youth and adult competitive and recreational sports in Shelby County through collaborations with community organizations, business partners, and recreational facilities.

We’ve ensured that this organization will do all it can to lead these efforts and assist those organizations that come to Shelby County. For more information regarding the Blue River Sports Authority, call the Shelby County Tourism & Visitor’s Bureau at 1-888-303-0244 or 317-398-9623.

Harvester Financial Credit Union (HFCU) has been offering people a better way to bank since 1954. We take pride in being member-owned and being able to return more of our operating income back to members in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates, and reduced fees. Plus, we are federally insured by the National Credit Union Insurance Fund up to $250,000.

HFCU is a local, full-service financial institution with offices in Shelbyville - 1220 Miller Avenue and Indianapolis - 7020 Brookville Road. In 2008, our credit union obtained a state charter which allowed us to expand our membership to include anyone who lives or works in either Shelby County or Marion County.

Last year, credit union membership grew by 2 million people and credit union deposits topped $1 trillion for the first time ever, according to the Credit Union National Association. What is the credit union difference?

•Not-for-profit. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives. We exist to serve our members, not to make a profit. Unlike most other financial institutions, credit unions do not issue stock or pay dividends to outside stockholders. Instead, earnings are returned to our members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest on deposits, and lower fees.•Member-owned. Credit unions are owned by our members. We are democratically operated organizations who are generally managed by volunteer boards of directors (elected by and from the credit union’s membership) with a specific mission of meeting the credit and savings needs of consumers. Service is our business. Consumers want banking services delivered in a caring, low-fee environment. Credit unions across the nation help their customers achieve financial wellness... through a caring, needs-based approach.

Get Un-Banked at HFCU! We treat you like you own the place… Because, you do!
