At last the decision is made! For the last three months the EU Referendum has dominated the news. In doing so it has caused major uncertainty amongst business decision makers. This in turn has resulted in a ‘slowdown’ in the economy. Two referendums and a General Election in the last two years has not been good for economic growth. Our appeal is for no more referendums in the short term. Those in Government are elected to govern on our behalf and must do so in the future and not revert to the people of this country to do their job.

“Hampshire’s voting broadly reflects the national picture. Some of our members, who have long harboured legitimate concerns about Brussels power and red tape, will be happy. Among them will be owners of many small and medium-sized businesses. We understand the frustrations they have had and we hope the future is more benign. For those who voted to remain however, including no doubt those many

Hampshire exporters who trade across the EU and have been putting off investment decisions, the referendum result is a painful blow. Hampshire has very strong links to Europe through its geographic proximity, two major sea ports and regional airport. Growth strategies in a number of our sectors, including engineering, aerospace and marine, are certainly going to be affected but the full extent is unclear.

What the business community needs now is a clear plan to stabilise markets and support the economy during the coming transition period. Equally, the government needs to ensure there are free trade deals in place, with Europe and elsewhere, that really do deliver. As we have been throughout the referendum campaign, with our debates and roundtable events, we are neutral politically. At the same time, we will continue sharing essential information with our members on how decisions in Westminster affect Hampshire businesses.

Southampton Solent University was named winner of the Southampton Business Success Award at the recent Mayor Making ceremony.Organised by Southampton City Council and Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, the award recognises the contribution that businesses make to the life of the city.

The award and certificate were presented to Solent’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Baldwin, by the new Mayor, Councillor Cathie McEwing, and Sandeep Sesodia, Chair of the Southampton Business Board at Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, for the University’s longstanding contribution to the city.

“Solent University has brought a substantial number of students into the city, which has enhanced the cultural and economic life of the city, and has also significantly contributed to the current new developments in the city centre,” said Mayor McEwing.

“The University has supported the development of a number of media start-ups, and supported the Chamber of Commerce for a number of years.”

Professor Baldwin adds: “We’re delighted to receive the award in recognition of the work that we do. We’re very much a university for the city, and it’s a great honour to have the significant contributions we have made recognised with this award at the Mayor Making ceremony.”

Sandeep Sesodia, Chair of Southampton Business Board said: “Southampton Solent University richly deserve the award for their tireless work and collaboration with the business community, their engagement with the Southampton community and for their ongoing participation in the development of

the city centre. “The Chamber of

Commerce benefits by being based in the heart of the city within the University premises and this provides an excellent location for businesses to

access the Chamber. The University benefits because students can study and experience at first hand the Chamber at work in supporting businesses in many different ways.”

Phillips Solicitors in Basingstoke have retained the Law Society’s legal practice quality mark, Lexcel, to its highest level. Lexcel is developed specifically for the legal profession. It is an optional, recognised accreditation scheme for law firms that gives assurance that a practice meets high client care and business management standards.

To gain and retain Lexcel accreditation, Phillips undergoes a rigorous initial and annual application

and assessment process. This includes conducting background checks and an on-site visit from an independent experienced and trained Lexcel assessor.

Howard Gardener, Chairman of Phillips Solicitors, said: “While we are proud to have secured Lexcel, it is our clients who are the main beneficiaries. They can be assured that the way we manage the practice has their interests at heart and runs efficiently. There is a lot of choice in the legal market but Lexcel accreditation

demonstrates our commitment to client care and best practice.”

Jonathan Smithers, President of the Law Society of England and Wales, said: “Gaining and maintaining Lexcel is a considerable feat. There are many facets of being a Lexcel accredited law firm, including excellence in client care. A real commitment to customer service in today’s evermore competitive legal services market is vital. The scheme is a beacon of quality to clients and potential clients alike.”

Thinking of updating your company brochure? How about turning it into a video brochure? Imagine, if you will, your company sending customers a link to a sophisticated, superior marketing tool that contains all they need to know, within a few clicks. In marketing, it’s important to talk to customers where and how they choose. Most people now look online for information, although some still like to read a traditional brochure.

The digital video brochure is like a corporate brochure but with a totally interactive format. It’s all about the user experience! You can open it up, watch films in it, explore details in more depth and share on social media. Video is embedded to keep viewers engaged, not lost to external links on YouTube or Vimeo.

Prices begin at just £299; and Chamber members will receive a 10% discount.

Director and film-maker Freddie Rostand says: “If you have a hard copy brochure in place we will add all of the interactive elements and put it online for you. If you don’t have a brochure in place, let us design and build you a new digital video brochure.” Top value features:• An “in-document” video player – just

click and the film plays. (View an example at www.rostand.co.uk).

• Friendly, attractive look and feel• Information extras, pop-up windows for

text, photos, videos etc.• Social media sharing• Internal links between pages e.g. index• External links e.g. email

Gunwharf Quays has been awarded a prestigious BCSC Purple Apple Marketing Award, taking home a merit for their campaign Christmas 2015: All Your Presents, Present.Gunwharf Quays was shortlisted in the Strategic Marketing Campaign category and judges examined the results from multi-layered, innovative campaigns that embraced all disciplines from across the UK retail property sector.

With over 90 famous brands at the south’s leading premium retail outlet, Christmas 2015: All Your Presents, Present was a campaign created to celebrate the choice available at the Portsmouth retail outlet for Christmas shoppers. Driven by insight, a multi-media campaign was executed across a two hour drive time catchment resulting in a successful Christmas sales period.

Yvonne Clay, Senior Marketing Manager at Gunwharf Quays, said: “We are delighted to be named amongst some of the UK’s top shopping centres.”

Gunwharf Quays was within a shortlist of 22 competitors including heavyweight shopping centres Bluewater, Westfield, London and Birmingham’s Bullring. The winners were announced at a glittering awards ceremony in central London this month, presented by BBC radio presenter, Edith Bowman.

The BCSC Purple Apple Marketing Awards are the only awards which recognise effective shopping and town centre marketing within the UK retail property sector. They reflect how marketers are constantly adjusting to changing times, from ensuring their budget works harder to driving retailer sales and harnessing new initiatives including digital marketing.

Hampshire Chamber would like to see these strategic transport proposals included in plans to realise the true economic potential of the Solent Local Economic Partnership area as an international, intermodal transport hub.

RAIL - East/west connectivityEvery opportunity should be looked at to increase the use of rail for public transport with particular reference to better direct rail routes from Portsmouth, Fareham, Chichester through Botley, Hedge End and connecting with Southampton Airport by improving station capacity at Eastleigh Station.RAIL - Fast direct rail from the south to Heathrow and LondonAs part of the crucially important need to improve accessibility, reduce congestion and improve air quality by increasing public transport use to and from Heathrow, a fast rail link from Woking to Heathrow is proposed by Heathrow Hub Ltd. The trains would operate through Heathrow to Paddington, using the existing Heathrow Express paths. Modelled test results show that, as well as transforming access for airport passengers leaving and arriving in the UK, the scheme provides significant direct relief to the South Western Main Line and the network serving Waterloo.RAIL - Mini-metro serviceBy focussing more on intra Hampshire travel, including smaller stations, there is ample opportunity to transfer to rail many of the documented 15 – 30

miles trips currently undertaken by car and often on the local motorways. Concurrently, this would reduce environmental and pollution impacts and aid economic growth in the area, as well as relieve congested trains on the longer journeys. A mini-metro service for Portsmouth to Southampton and Eastleigh to Romsey via Chandlers Ford on 20 minute and half hourly service frequencies along with the provision of new stations and reopening the Waterside Railway to passenger traffic will improve many possible travel connections. ROAD - Chickenhall link roadThis strategic link road needing large scale funding has been proposed for some twenty years. The time may be right for further consideration not only for crucial access to the future major Eastleigh Riverside development area, but to serve the former Ford factory site and airport development land.ROAD - Improved road link to avoid the M27 Junction 5 and EastleighThere is an opportunity to provide an important improved road link from the vicinity of J9 on the M27 near Whiteley to the M3 at Allbrook by joining up several pieces of planned

road improvements shown in Option A in Eastleigh’s Local Plan with a new road linking J9 to Curbridge, to make one stretch of road that would provide upgraded public transport infrastructure and services, avoid J5/M27 airport, ease congestion on motorways used as local roads and reduce traffic through the town of Eastleigh.

ROAD - Botley BypassThe provision of the Botley bypass would benefit not only those living and working in Whiteley and Hedge End but also could open up the area around Botley station, probably for further employment development supported by existing transport links and connecting to the new Park Gate bypass.

ROAD - Bus Rapid TransitImproved productivity comes from locating new housing and commercial development close to good quality public transport, cycle and pedestrian links. So it is essential that plans are made to continue the existing Bus Rapid Transit system south to the congested Gosport peninsular.

ROAD - Welborne and M27/Junction 10Lack of funding is causing unacceptable delays on a solution for Junction 10 on the M27 which is needed before the Welborne employment land can be developed. Taken from the Policy Statement on transport by the Planning & Transport Committee, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, June 2016.

Traffic jams on roads and delays on rail transport are the cause of much frustration and, still worse, can be counted in many hours of lost productivity.

Target – Adobe – AOL – eBay - Talk Talk - What do these companies all have in common? These are all recent victims of big cyber security attacks.Over 145 million records were compromised in the case of online auction site eBay and Target dealt with more than 70 million breaches of their customer base. Unfortunately, all too often, organisations react to this type of event rather than proactively protect against it.

In the UK, cyber-attacks are a common problem for local businesses. A survey carried out by Oxford Economics and the Ponemon Institute found that 60% of respondents had experienced a cyber-attack in the 12 months leading to July 2014. The truth is cyber crime is a real threat to all UK businesses. In 2015, there were over 2.5 million reports of cyber crime in the UK alone.

While looking at the statistics in millions and billions makes for pretty shocking reading, it’s not very relatable. For it to have a real impact, you need to know the real cost to you and your business. The average cost to a small business in the UK is between £75,000 and £311,000. This comes about through system downtime, loss of productivity and cost to repair systems after an attack. Can you afford to spend £311,000 to recover from a cyber-attack?

Unfortunately, though, solving a data breach isn’t as simple as “turning it off and on again” like you would if your office computer was playing up. The average time it takes to resolve a cyber-attack is 31 days. Should you fall foul to a malicious insider attack, you can expect to spend more than 70 days trying to contain the breach. That’s at least a month of system downtimes, a month of customer complaints and cancellations, a month of negative press, and a month of paying staff when they can’t work. If you can’t plug the leak or solve the problem, you could be left in the lurch for a lot longer.

As a small business owner, the Data Protection Act shouldn’t be news to you. Your customers trust you

with their data, be that their names and email addresses or their credit card information. It’s an assumption we all make – the people we share our data with are doing their very best to protect it. However, if your business is found to be in breach of this legislation, you’re liable for a fine of up to £500,000.

However, there are also 10 practical and simple steps to cyber security that are recommended by the Government:• Define your information risk

management regime• User education and awareness• Home and mobile working policies• Secure systems’ configuration• Removable media controls• Managing user privileges• Incident management

• Systems’ monitoring• Malware protection• Network securityA good first step is to employ a cyber security specialist to perform an audit of your systems and processes and report on where your organisation is, in comparison with industry standards and known threat trends.

The cost of undergoing a full system audit to understand what you need to improve is as nothing compared to the average £311,000 cost of a breach.

Andy Miles, CEO, ThinkMarble Ltd - latest member to join Hampshire Chamber’s Tax Finance & Legal Committee. For more information on cyber security please email [email protected].

CHAMBER

Stay Co ectedYou’re in good company and represented by:

Welcome from Stewart DunnChief Executive of Hampshire Chamber of CommerceAcross the county the Chamber of Commerce has local representation through our unique network of local committees representing members’ interests. Each area committee meets monthly with an elected chair to cover a host of topics to help local business.

In addition, the Tax Finance & Legal Committee and Planning & Transport Committee meet each month to review and respond to government policies, budgets and new legislation and local authority plans to ensure members’ interests are safeguarded. Below are the latest updates from our area committees.

Emma WattsChair Rushmoor & Hart

In a few weeks Rushmoor & Hart Committee will hold their AGM. This is your opportunity to add your voice to local business discussions, broaden your network and strengthen business relationships.Rushmoor & Hart Committee have been working to develop our strategy, and to build on networking opportunities for all sizes and types of business. Response has been excellent, and we will be back in September in full force and look forward to meeting you. We are looking for more businesses and individuals to join us, to help in raising the profile of the Chamber in north Hampshire and to influence change and development. There are opportunities for young people too; find out how to get involved by connecting with us on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8465397 or by visiting the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce website http://www.hampshirechamber.co.uk/events-and-news.html.

Kevin StansfieldChair Eastleigh

Our first meeting focussing on our purpose of being the voice of local business back to local and national government was a great success. We now have leaders of our four steering committees; David Heda from London Clancy is heading up the Property group, Clive Watkins from Lambert Brothers, Transportation, Jan Edrich from Eastleigh College, People and Ben Earl will focus on Utilities. Each head has chosen two key topics that they feel are most pressing in their area and will feedback to the group facts and figures that can be used at council and government level in order to influence future decisions. Key topics from the People sector this month were identifying the skills gap with local businesses and how to motivate school leavers to start their careers rather than head off to University. If you have any information on this area then please do get in touch.

With the announcement that Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council has signed a deal with a developer to build Grade A office premises on Basing View, and Next taking an anchor site in Festival Place, Basingstoke is looking at a number of big changes to enhance its position in the market.

At our recent committee meeting, hosted by Karen Wild, the CEO of Basingstoke Together BID, we discussed the plans to re-energise the town centre of Basingstoke. Plans for the BID include town-wide wifi, which will help businesses engage with consumers as they travel through the town, and employing town centre ambassadors to both meet and greet visitors to Basingstoke and to engage with the businesses in town to ensure that the BID provides the services that will help them.

The next Chamber event in Basingstoke is on 7th July, with Milestones museum hosting the Chamber AGM on 22nd September. Our local committee would like more representatives from the industrial sectors, to ensure we have a fully rounded view of the businesses in our area. If you’re interested please contact me at [email protected].

The recent month brought many occasions for Hampshire Chamber to speak up in support of good economic growth which included proposals for the redevelopment of the Station Approach in Winchester, Solent LEP bids for Southampton Airport Economic Gateway and for Solent Metro phase 1, plus Solent Transport’s bid for a Better Connected Solent. We supported Salisbury Chamber’s campaign for an A303 route upgrade to the west avoiding Stonehenge and bringing better route connections to the south coast and the international intermodal transport hub represented by the major ports of Southampton and Portsmouth and Southampton International Airport. We submitted an objection to an attempt to clear the way to convert into living accommodation the top two floors of a fairly modern office building in Winchester under the change in planning regulation allowing this to happen which the committee considers to be approaching the realms of planning anarchy.

The Andover Committee has accepted and approved the adoption of the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce “Terms of Reference” for committees. This is a great step that is part of the path to the Andover Committee being more proactive and productive in the Andover. We are working hard to have a plan and vision for what we would like to achieve in conjunction with supporting local businesses. The committee has started with our “buddy” system whereby each committee member is assigned to an Andover area member of Hampshire Chamber. The objective of the “buddy” system is to ensure that all members are being engaged and to encourage participation in local area events. The committee members are also a contact into the Chamber and can help guide the members. The judging for the Test Valley Business Awards is well underway and there has been a large number of entries into all categories. The awards are an important way to recognise local business achievements within not only the Andover area but also the entire Test Valley. The Andover Committee supports the awards and encourages all Test Valley businesses to get involved.

Following May’s local elections, the political make-up of Winchester Council is now Conservatives: 25 and Liberal Democrats: 20. We continue to work closely with members of the Council to build relationships and challenge strategy with regard to development of the city and to keep the business community at the heart of current thinking.

One area of the city currently being reviewed is Winnall. A planning framework has recently been passed through Cabinet with regard to supporting growth of this important business community. There are a number of exciting events planned over the summer so please take a look at the Hampshire Chamber website for more details.

Future Skills Project Hampshire Chamber of Commerce continues to work with Southampton Solent University and other stakeholders on the Future Skills Project. This research project is to identify future skill requirements for business in the next 15 years. It is an extremely important piece of work that is being undertaken.

Devolution / Planning & Transport The Southampton Business Board continues to collaborate with the City Council and the Solent LEP with regards to the key issues of Devolution and the Solent Strategic Transport Investment Plan. Both topics will continue to have an ongoing impact in the region and will be defining.

Depending on the nature of your business, the often quieter months of summer can be a good time to take stock of how the company is performing, assess the direction it is taking and perhaps make changes to ensure it remains as competitive as possible in the relevant market.

For example, is it time to consider entering new markets? Or could now be the time to look at expanding your business, or investing in new machinery and equipment? Is now the time to consider launching a new product or service, or is it time to focus on just one key area of the business?

Ahead of the autumn ‘back to business’ rush, it can also be a good time to look at financing costs across the board, whether on trade finance, invoice finance or commercial property, to ensure you have the best deal for your company.

As they say, those who snooze, lose, while those who look ahead typically remain one step ahead.

With the summer in full flow and holidays on the horizon, thoughts may be far away from financial planning. Yet thinking ahead can be the bedrock for financial success in business.

Workplace Challenge is part of Sport England’s 2012 legacy programme. The aim is to encourage people to be more active in and around their working day by making sure they have opportunities to take part in fun, low cost activities.

Sport Hampshire & IOW asked Focus to video their recent Zumba Dancethon held in the Great Hall, Winchester for Hampshire County Council staff. Money was also raised for Sport Relief (http://www.sportrelief.com/).

Vicky Cullimore of Sport Hampshire & IOW said: “Besides raising money for charity the event was a good way for people to get active in their lunch break with colleagues. Our role is to help employers and their staff to run such initiatives.”

Adrian Moss of Focus said: “It was great to capture the Winchester event so it could be used as part of the ongoing promotion of Workplace Challenge and the work of Sport Hampshire & IOW.”

The Southern Co-operative has launched regional partnerships with the disability charity Scope and a group of local environment and nature charities, the Wildlife Trusts, donating £40,000 to each as part of a new community scheme to address local concerns across southern England. The £172,000 raised in the first six months of the 5p carrier bag levy will go towards The Southern Co-operative’s new community initiative, Love Your Neighbourhood. The programme focuses on four goals to create ‘greener’, ‘safer’, ‘healthier’, and ‘more inclusive’ neighbourhoods, addressing these themes through the provision of funding to regional partners alongside more localised community support.

Since the levy was introduced

on 5th October 2015, The Southern Co-operative has seen a reduction of over 70% in single-use carrier bags given out by its 195 food stores. Between 5th October 2015 and 5th April 2016, The Southern Co-operative has cut the number of single-use carrier bags given to its customers by more than 10 million.

The Southern Co-operative will launch two further regional partnerships to address the ‘safer’ and ‘healthier’ neighbourhood aims in the

coming months. Both of these partners will also receive £40,000 in funding.

For the next cycle of carrier bag funding, local groups will be able to apply through the Love Your Neighbourhood scheme in food stores and funeral homes to address the same four key themes. Through the initiative, local charities and community groups can also apply for goods in kind donations, to become a local fundraising partner, and for local volunteering.

More information about The Southern Co-operative’s Love Your Neighbourhood programme can be found at: www.thesouthernco-operative.co.uk/makingadifference/love-your-neighbourhood/.

All businesses collect and hold personal data about their customers, employees and others that they have dealings with. That data is a valuable asset and businesses are rightly investing resources to protect that data by putting in place cybersecurity measures. But Robert Wassall, Managing Director of DataHelp, says: “These measures won’t work, or at least won’t work well, unless staff understand and accept the need to comply with data security”. DataHelp advises businesses on how to ensure that happens by creating a ‘security culture’, a mindset and mode of operation that’s integrated into day-to-day thinking and decision-making.

The very best way of achieving a security culture is to train employees how data security policy violations can have a direct financial impact on the business they work in (and possibly the security of their employment).

Robert says: “Unfortunately many training providers tend to focus on simply setting out what policies and procedures employees are required to follow, without actually explaining why they should do so. The training we provide also focuses on specific threat scenarios with examples of real cases to explain why data security is important”.

A leading Hampshire lawyer has been appointed to the prestigious position of Chairwoman of Forces Law, the independent organisation offering legal help to the Armed Forces.Jane Hodge, Solicitor and Director at Biscoes Law Limited in Portsmouth, who specialises in immigration and sports law, was appointed to Chairwoman this month.

Biscoes Law were one of the founding law firms in the organisation and have actively been involved in the development of the group for the past 20 years.

Jane said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as the new Chairwoman to Forces Law. I have been involved with the group for the past 10 years and have seen it grow to become an established legal support to service personnel and associated Armed Forces charities.

“We understand the particular needs of military personnel and their families whilst serving”.

The Forces Law call centre operates from Biscoes’ office in Portsmouth and the helpline directs callers to their nearest member firm.

Biscoes also operates a number of solicitor-led free legal advice clinics in service establishments including HMS Nelson, HMS Excellent (Whale Island), HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood.

Jane’s aim during her year in office is to increase the profile of the organisation through social media and the website. She is also looking to recruit more members to the group to ensure a comprehensive service across the county is provided.

Alison Lee, Managing Director at Biscoes, which has six offices, in Portsmouth, Gosport, Portchester, Wickham, Waterlooville and Petersfield, said: “This honour is richly deserved by Jane who works exceedingly hard on behalf of this firm – and it also raises the profile of Biscoes as a supporter of our Armed Forces.”

YOUR CSR CHARITY PARTNERSHIP CAN

BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS AND

EMPLOYEES TOO

uncan Souster is CEO of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a Hampshire based, UN accredited international charity pioneering

a new approach to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Charitable partnerships have long been recognised as an essential part of any CSR programme, yet the vast majority are a one-way street – the charity may benefit, but what is the real value to your business or employees?

A partnership with the Jubilee Sailing Trust is just that: a partnership with a multitude of benefits for your company, your staff and the wider community.

Corporate Social Responsibility can be about more than reputation, shareholder value, and brand differentiation. When executed properly, a charity partnership is a great way of encouraging pride in the workplace, developing staff skills, and improving collaboration across internal silos.

By considering the different stakeholders in your business and how any partnership would serve them, we can work with you to ensure it delivers maximum business value - be that in reputation, sales, marketing, operational effectiveness or productivity.

In other words, a partnership with the Jubilee Sailing Trust can deliver not only your CSR activities, but also simultaneously fulfil professional development, training, human resources, community engagement and promotional objectives - all at no further cost.

Working with multinational law firm Norton Rose Fulbright from 2012 to 2014, the Jubilee Sailing Trust embarked on a groundbreaking sailing adventure - taking a partially disabled crew of charity beneficiaries on a global circumnavigation - visiting Norton Rose Fulbright’s offices around the world with a common philanthropic focus, leading local team building, community engagement and client entertainment.

More recently, we have supported Barclays’ LifeSkills programme, equipping young people with confidence, life and workplace skills. In this growing partnership, Barclays staff have sailed around the Solent as buddies to disabled crew members selected from Barclay’s other partner charities within the local community. This provided an excellent forum for Barclays’ staff to engage with their community, strengthen their team and make a significant contribution to its nationwide citizenship programme.

These partnerships have demonstrated the power of coherent and connected CSR, CPD, HR and PR programmes for the benefit of your business while simultaneously supporting a globally unique charitable cause.

To find out how a fun, rewarding and cross-purpose partnership can work for your business or organisation, visit www.jst.org.uk or contact us at:[email protected] 8044 9108 or @jubileesailing

1. Mexico is a HUGE (and young) country: It has a population of over 125m and an average age of 27.

2. Mexicans like to spend! Total household spending is higher than in the UK and the highest in Latin America.

3. Mexico is open for business: The country has more Free Trade Agreements (FTA) than any country in the world – including an FTA with the European Union.

4. Mexico is competitive (even against China): The country is now four percentage points cheaper than China for manufacturing. This is due to gains in production and proximity to the US where manufactured goods can get in duty free.

5. Aerospace is big in Mexico: In 2014, imports for the industry reached 413m USD.

6. Mexico is financially stable: The country has one of the lowest rates of inflation in Latin America.

7. And the insurance market is growing: It was an estimated 9.3bn USD in 2012 and last year Lloyds officially established an office in the country.

8. The oil and gas market is opening up: The 2013 energy reform has led to various rounds of tenders in oil and gas exploration and production with more to come.

9. The power generation market too! The reform also means private companies can sell electricity to the grid.

10. But Mexico wants clean power: The 2015 Mexican General Climate Change law aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has launched its 2016/17 creative consumer campaign and brand new visual identity. #MakeTime promotes the Historic Dockyard’s unique collection of world famous warships, attractions and museums, along with some momentous landmark events taking place this year. As we embark on another huge year, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is the ideal destination to visit, and revisit, for those looking to #MakeTime for a fun day out that is steeped in rich naval history in 2016.

The world's most famous warship, HMS Victory, has been renovated for the first time in decades and returned to her Georgian heyday.

Action Stations, the interactive indoor attraction, has launched Ninja Force, putting visitors at the heart of the modern naval experience.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) will launch a new blockbuster ‘36 Hours: Jutland 1916, the Battle That Won The War’ exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Jutland.

This summer, Henry VIII’s true love, the Mary Rose, will be revealed again with new awe-inspiring up-close and personal views of the glorious ship. This will be the closest visitors have ever been able to get since her recovery in 1982 and will offer an even more enhanced visitor experience.

Home to 11 attractions, there is so much for visitors to see and do at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. And with annual All Attraction tickets available, there is plenty of opportunity to #MakeTime to visit this year.

The annual All Attraction Ticket: from £26.40 per adult (16-59), £18.40 per child (5-15) and £68 per family (two adults, three children, under 5s free) when booked online.

In East Hampshire, more and more

businesses are reaping the rewards of an

apprenticeship scheme run by East Hampshire

District Council (EHDC).

The initiative, called Get East Hants Working, helps fund wages, training and transport costs for apprentices from the district.

Since its launch in July 2013, more than 30 businesses have been matched with appropriate apprentices in the district and more and more companies are embracing the opportunities offered by taking on an apprentice.

All these positions are newly-created and can only be taken up by those currently not in work.

Here are the stories of three businesses that have benefited from an apprentice.

The value of apprenticeships Rediweld

Rediweld, a technical moulder supplying the aerospace sector with rubber parts, appointed an apprentice in August 2014.

Roger Marsh, Managing Director of the Alton-based company, said the success of Rediweld relies on the skills of its workforce and apprenticeships help reinforce those skills.

“An apprenticeship develops vital skills for the next generation,” he said.

“EHDC’s apprenticeship scheme has made it much easier to take on an apprentice and to put him through the qualifications we wanted.

“Without the funding and the support we have received from EHDC we may not have been able to do it this way.”

East Hampshire District Councillor Nick Drew and East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds were given a tour of the business and discovered how EHDC’s apprenticeship scheme has helped both the business and the apprentice himself, Kieran Wilding.

Cllr Nick Drew, EHDC’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “The idea behind EHDC’s apprenticeship scheme is to make it as easy as possible for businesses to take on apprentices.

“We need to make sure the funding is available to companies and make sure there are plenty of positions for apprentices.

“We have been very impressed with the number of young people who came to us and asked us to help them find placements, there is obviously a big demand for apprenticeships out there.

“Our scheme brings together employers, apprentices, colleges

and all the organisations that play a part in making an apprenticeship a success. This is all part of our ambition to be one of the most business-friendly councils in the country.”

Damian Hinds MP said apprenticeship schemes such as East Hampshire District Council’s were a key part of the country’s long-term economic plan.

“East Hampshire District Council’s Apprenticeship Scheme is an innovative and practical way to help businesses and young people in the area,” he said.

“Our visit to Rediweld and our meeting with Kieran really brought home how the scheme works in practice. Apprenticeships are a really important route to employment for many young people and it is great that EHDC has taken such an active role in promoting and supporting them in East Hampshire.”

A fresh perspectiveCLARCOR

CLARCOR Industrial Air employs more than 700 people worldwide, with around 100 people based in its manufacturing site in Alton, Hampshire.

The company recruited its first apprentice in August 2014 and has been reaping the benefits ever since.

Simone Begg, Human Resources Advisor for CLARCOR, said an apprentice provides a fresh, new perspective to a business.

“Our first apprentice joined us in August 2014,” she said. “Prior to this we also started working with the University of Surrey to offer one year internships to engineering students. At CLARCOR

we recognise the importance of training and development. When recruiting, particularly for our engineering teams, it can be difficult to find the right level of talent and experience in this region - so we decided that we should work with someone to create that talent.

“Since our current apprentice, Matt, joined the business his enthusiasm and eagerness to learn has been felt throughout the team and wider organisation. Our other employees are enjoying the opportunities that they have been given to coach and develop someone, and the business is benefiting from fresh, new perspectives, which is important for innovation.

“My advice to anyone who is considering hiring an apprentice would be, if you have the resources then go for it. Hiring an apprentice is a great way to build a talent pipeline for your business – especially for those roles with skills that are hard to come by.”

CLARCOR is celebrating 50 years of delivering innovative solutions for gas turbine inlet filtration and monitoring fleet-wide performance data, CLARCOR’s industry and applications experts will select the appropriate filter for your site designed to meet your specific operating goals.

Attitude over experience Pinetree Enterprises

The management at Blacknest company Pinetree Enterprises found out that a lack of experience is not an impediment to excellent performance when they found themselves relying on their young apprentice.

The company, which makes display equipment, employed Eden Carter as an apprentice at the end of 2015 to answer phones for the sales team - but within months she was filling in for the Senior Accounts Manager.

A skiing accident meant Eden’s boss was unexpectedly off work for six weeks and the company had little choice but to throw Eden in at the deep end.

At just 16 years old, this was a very daunting task for her and a very big risk for the company but she rose to the task magnificently.

Eden found herself answering customers’ enquiries and producing simple quotes. Also, she began taking detailed enquiries and finding out the answers from experienced members of staff, before getting back to the customer with the results.

What impressed the company most is the speed at which she has learned and how, in her own words, she is now “feeling far more mature than my friends”.

Martyn Kiddey, managing director, said it was a sink or swim moment for Eden.

“We didn’t know who was most surprised! Not only did we discover that she could swim very well, but are now considering whether she should enter the Olympics!

“This experience has reinforced our belief in the apprenticeship scheme and it has proved that it is attitude and determination, not age and experience, that counts.”

Choosing your first office space or moving into a new one can be a stressful time, but by reminding yourself of a few key points you can take some of the pressure off. Make sure the location is convenient for your staff to get to and for your clients to come and visit. Consider public transport links if you are going to be holding large events and meetings or if you have clients coming from abroad. How easy is the office to get to and is there enough parking? Being hard to get to or not having available onsite parking is not the best start to an important meeting.

Think about the appearance of the building; does it give off the best first impression to your business? Try and make sure that the interior also reflects your brand and is somewhere

that your staff will look forward to coming to everyday.

Consider all of your options when it comes to office space; it might be that you only need a virtual office for mailing and telephone purposes, or perhaps you could share the space with another business. There are many options other than the traditional office space which could work for you, whether that is renting a desk, space, sharing or not having a physical office at all.

Do you have everything you need nearby for staff and clients? Emergencies happen and a quick rush

down to the stationery shop is not unheardof, so make sure your office is close to any amenities you may need.

An important point to consider is whether there is room to grow and why you are moving in the first place. Have you just outgrown your previous location or are you looking to grow in the near future? If so, make sure the new office allows for a bit of growth, otherwise you’ll find yourself in the same position again.

With so much to think about, make sure to take your time when making the decision and consider all available options.

A Southampton based law firm has come first in the ABP Southampton Half Marathon and 10k Corporate Challenge.

Clarke Willmott comes

first in corporate challengeThe combined efforts of Greg Hughes, Paul Cox and Jake Connis from Clarke Willmott LLP, meant that the team came out on top in the 10k corporate race.

Senior Associate within the Commercial and Private Client litigation department, Greg Hughes, achieved his personal best in the race and came first in his race category with a time of 40 minutes and 23 seconds.

Paul Cox, who is a Partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property team, is relatively new to running and came third in his race category with a time of 43 minutes and 28 seconds and Jake Connis, who provides administration support to the Southampton office, completed his first 10k race in 54 minutes and 58 seconds.

The firm has sponsored the Southampton Half Marathon and 10k for two years and champions the Corporate Challenge, urging local businesses to come together to take part.

Greg Hughes said: “It’s great that Clarke Willmott has come first in this year’s 10k Corporate Challenge. As sponsors and great supporters of this event we always try to pull a large team together and we’ve all thoroughly enjoyed training and taking part.

“The event is great for the city and the route really showcases Southampton at its best.”

Clarke Willmott LLP is a national law firm with seven offices across the country, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton and Taunton.

Southampton’s most important historic building, Tudor House, reveals over 800 years of history. The timber frame building was built in the late 15th century. Tudor House gives a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of its residents and of Southampton itself.Tudor House has been through many different phases over the years, and in 2015 it was decided to replace the exhibition lighting.

Working with Southampton’s Museum Arts and Heritage team along with their carbon reduction manager, Commercial Lighting Systems Ltd were able to meet the challenge and a new LED exhibition lighting system was installed.

Dan Matthews, Lead Exhibition Officer

“The new exhibition lighting that has been installed at Tudor House Museum is a great improvement, not only in terms of efficiency but in quality of

light from the LEDs; it is a real improvement to the displays.”

Jane Altonyan, Carbon Reduction Officer

“I am grateful to Commercial Lighting Systems for working hard to ensure they could offer us an affordable, workable alternative to the high energy halogen track spotlights. Not only are we saving on electricity bills, but our museum staffs are very pleased with the quality of the new lighting.”

The savings the museum have made will give them a payback period of less than 12 months for the new exhibition lighting.

Stetsons, baseball caps and coloured wigs - not the usual attire for a solicitors’ office but staff at Trethowans cast aside their usual looks to raise money for a worthy cause.Employees from the law firm’s Southampton office sported unusual headwear as part of the annual Hats for Headway event, where people across the UK don hats for the

Headway brain injury charity. Trethowans is a long-time

supporter of the charity, which provides vital support to help people improve their lives after a brain injury.

Gavin Lane, head of Trethowans’ personal injury team in Southampton and a Trustee of Headway in Southampton, said: “We’ve seen first-hand the fantastic work that Headway does for people who have suffered brain injuries and we’re keen to do all we can to support the charity so it can continue its important mission.”

Trethowans’ Hats for Headway day raised £150 for the charity’s local branch, which could be used to fund everything from its emergency information helpline to its emergency fund, which helps people dealing with the financial implications in the immediate aftermath of a brain injury.

The fundraising day forms part of Trethowans’ mission to undertake 150 good deeds in the local community in its 150th year. So far it has supported women’s theatre groups, dementia charities and local sports groups. Later this year a team of staff from its corporate team will take on the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the Joe Glover Trust.

celebrate on Walworth Park

Ebit Business Solutions are one of the fastest growing procurement consultancies in the UK. We help our clients save significant sums across all typical spend areas such as utilities, office stationery and facilities management; these are just some initial examples. Most businesses regardless of their size or industry background will have supplier spend whether it be for goods or goods and services, may have certain preferred suppliers and be in a formal agreement or contract with them and may even have an internal function that files those agreements or contracts. We find:• No specific owner of contracts

within a business • Sometimes a dusty filing cabinet

holding out-of-date agreements • Numerous out-of-date contracts

that have expired and just continue to run on onerous terms

• A supplier agreement that actually puts the business at riskWe have set out to offer our clients

the very best product with the best support, providing the best customer experience and more importantly return on investment.

Imagine all your contracts in one secure location, never falling into out of contract default rates, never accepting auto RPI increases, and complete governance.

Managing people is tough!Ever wondered why managing people is one of the hardest things you have to do when you run your own businesses or are promoted to a management position? Well the reality is that most people try to manage in their own style rather than in the style of the people they are managing.

How do I know what style to use?It has long been known and backed up by research, that people’s behaviour can be grouped together into four main categories, dependent on whether they are more task or people focused and reserved or outgoing. Those categories have become known as DISC and it is one of the most tried and tested profiling systems in use today.

How do I get one?ActionCOACH is the leading business coaching and training organisation in Hampshire and we are committed to helping local businesses to grow and improve in every area. We are also trained to the highest level to carry out behavioural profiles and we want you to experience one for yourself so you can see the benefits first hand.

To Claim your FREE, 37 page Online DISC Report go to www.hampshirebusinesscoach.co.uk And see for yourself how powerful they can be. (Only applies to Directors, senior managers and business owners)

The American Ambassador was impressed with the enthusiasm and innovative ideas from local students who took part in TeenTech™ Solent, a one day event run in partnership with EBP South, the Education Business Partnership for the Solent area.TeenTech is an award winning, industry-led initiative, founded in 2008 by Maggie Philbin and Chris Dodson to help the “X Factor” generation understand their true potential and the real opportunities available in the contemporary STEM workplace.

TeenTech works with partners to run lively one-day events, with a year-round supporting awards scheme, to help young teenagers see the wide range of career possibilities in Science, Engineering and Technology.

TeenTech Solent brought together local STEM companies and colleges including Highbury College, Portsmouth Water, BAE Systems, Wartsila, Atkins, Bouygues, Bloodhound, Qinetic and National Grid, with more than 200 young people.

The Ambassador was particularly interested in Portsmouth Water’s interactive water distribution system

that students were building. He was also interested to see the inventive ideas for the future and the event showed that significantly more students were interested in a career in science and technology by the end of the event.

EBP South will be partnering with TeenTech again next May to run another event and science or technology companies interested in getting involved or sponsoring should contact [email protected].

Situated in the cultural surroundings of Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, the building will use its iconic status as a former jailhouse to provide office and co-working space for start-up and new businesses working in the creative sector.

Companies working from the space and also members of the local creative community will have access to bespoke training, workshops and mentoring schemes, designed to cultivate sustainability, economic growth and job creation in the region.

The project has come to fruition as a result of collaboration between the University of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, supported with funding from the Regional Growth Fund and the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire.

The aim was to draw on the Dragons' business knowledge, skills and understanding, helping the students develop a prototype product or service.Tuition was provided on forming a business and writing a business plan to include the branding, market research and financials, with the best student companies pitching their new start-up businesses to the team Dragons on week six. The whole event was sponsored by Sainsbury’s in Hedge End.The finalists were 14 student business ideas that were pitched to the Dragons. There were so many good business ideas: gym and fitness clothes company, wholesale pet supplies, a company that made a phone app, pet photography business, a cube prototype to help kids tell the time, pet sitting and dog walkers, and several other viable business ideas. Chris Herbert (Eastleigh Economic Development Officer) presented the winners with vouchers and a donation made to the school (see box to the right).Paul would also like to point out that each of 14 student company finalists who pitched their business to the Dragons were winners in their own right as far as the Dragons were concerned, and are congratulated for their effort and ingenuity and should not give up on their ambitions of having their own company one day. In fact this competition has really shown that the students in the very least have the ideas and enthusiasm to start their own businesses and some have some very unique product ideas.

If you are a local business owner who can spare some time to tutor some students in business studies, please contact FSB Wessex www.fsb.org.uk/regions/wessex or Quilley School http://crestwood.hants.sch.uk/, as all offers of help are gratefully received.

Over a period of six weeks, Paul Marsh of Century IT Services and other local Business Dragons donated their time to Eastleigh based Quilley School to assist 200 students with their school enrichment activities.

Almost 40 Hampshire Chamber members and guests attended the recent buffet Networking Lunch at Minstead Lodge.Minstead Lodge is situated in the historic village of Minstead, in the heart of the New Forest. It can be hired as a venue for conferences and meetings. It is a remarkable building, with its stunning, carved panelled walls, moulded ceilings and magnificent fireplaces a sight to behold. The Lodge is surrounded on all sides by spectacular views from the terrace at its rear. Following registration guests made their way into the main reception hall where they were invited to meet old friends and colleagues and take advantage of the networking opportunities whilst enjoying a refreshing pre-lunch reception drink.

Lunch was served in another impressive room which was to the left of the main hall. Chef and his team, which included a number of students from The Trust, had prepared a feast of a buffet which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Following lunch we were invited into another stunning reception room where Gold Patrons, Diguru, gave a short presentation on printing trends and what they are able to offer their clients in respect of their printing requirements.

During their presentation Diguru explained how they have recently secured Government funding with

Chamber support. Diguru went on to explain their exciting expansion and investment demonstrating how this has expanded the Diguru service capabilities.

In addition to their traditional print offerings, Diguru are self delivering custom printed fabrics, wallpapers, signs and exhibition displays of all shapes and sizes and they invited all Chamber members to approach them for business. In return, Diguru wll try where possible to reciprocate in the spirit of the Chamber membership.

Margaret Toms, Head of Membership Services, thanked Nick and the team from Diguru for their very informative update and for their continued support of Hampshire Chamber.

Margaret went on to invite Liz Cronin, Conference Manager at Minstead Lodge, to say a few words on behalf of Minstead Training Trust. Liz advised Minstead Lodge is the hub of Minstead Training Trust, an independent registered charity providing work skills training opportunities for people with learning disabilities, including horticulture, catering, woodwork and animal skills. They also offer life skills in literacy, numeracy, IT, domestic living, managing money, using public transport and creative arts

including painting, drawing, sewing photography and drama.

The aim of the charity is that people with learning disabilities are able to achieve greater independence to lead fulfilled lives and live as full citizens in our society, giving them an opportunity to achieve new skills and meet new challenges in all areas of their lives.

We were very privileged on the day to have Simon, one of their students, join us for lunch and speak about ‘A TYPICAL WEEK IN THE LIFE OF SIMON’. Simon told us he daily takes care of all the animals at the Lodge which include hens, goats, geese, donkeys and a horse. He has been taught woodwork and together with one of his friends built a donkey stable using pallet boards – a remarkable achievement, and after seeing this first-hand it is testimony to the dedication and hard work of all the tutors who help these young people to use their skills to the full. Minstead Training Trust also supports people in their homes and in the community, helping them with their everyday lives, and Simon now is able to live almost completely independently in his own home.

All too soon it was time to return to our desks in the city taking with us fond memories of a most enjoyable networking event hosted by Minstead Training Trust.

The June Winchester lunch started with sunshine and fizz on the patio at the Holiday Inn in Winchester. Over arrival drinks attendees networked, enjoying the warm weather and growing their business connections. The guest speaker for the event was long standing Chamber member Philip Tutt, partner at 360 Integrated PR. With his vast experience from working in various PR roles in companies such as Honda Power Equipment, the Army, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, A4e and ALNO kitchens he is well versed in how to create modern communications to grow sustainable businesses.

His talk focused upon how businesses can create and sustain a communications strategy that responds to the needs of what consumers demand of business today. An example of the changing consumer trends are reflected in recent statistics showing customers now value integrity and honestly over a business being innovative and bringing new products to the market; 95% of consumers asked stated “not letting customers down” as the most important quality, in comparison to 71% choosing “bringing new products to market”.

He also spoke of how to use this information and create business and marketing strategies that are reflective of the “always on” society we now operate in. His advice was that to create authentic brands businesses need to be engaging, informing and investing in their stakeholders. Modern PR strategies are not only about the product but about the company; Philip recommended embedding the company’s ethics into the business model and creating partnerships to help add value.

He concluded with three key steps to craft the business message:

1. What is the essential message which will resonate with your audience and create your business USP?

2. Expand this message – what does it mean in detail and why is it important?

3. Substantiation of the message – build its credibility and authority.

After showcasing examples of theory in practice, attendees were enthused to take a fresh look at their communication plans.

Philip’s presentation was followed by a delicious two course lunch, and further networking through seat changing between courses.

Many thanks to Philip for his insightful presentation and to the Holiday Inn for their hospitality.

Our annual update from Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke was a lively session with questions raised about the EU, gender pay gap and workplace pensions.Attendees welcomed the delicious breakfast on offer at the Red Lion Hotel for this early start, which was followed by the MP providing a local update and an overview of the strengths of town.

Maria stated:“Basingstoke has over 60,000 jobs in the borough

and is a leading place for employment. There is also low unemployment due to the great business leaders who work tirelessly to promote matching skills to staff and employees to companies.

One of the main issues with being such an outstanding centre of employment is that of the infrastructure to support the staff and organisations based in the area. Luckily with the support of the LEP, who are standing up for businesses, they have helped to secure substantial investment making a difference to helping achieve the local plan.”

Looking to the future, Maria said that with Basingstoke, there is always an opportunity around the corner. The creation of the BID, the developments in Basing View and the continual growth opportunities supported by the council and MPs and the availability of local skills ensures that businesses are able to progress with the backing of a strong support network.

Maria concluded with an active discussion on the EU referendum, asking businesses for their thoughts. Maria also made her personal position clear, "The UK is the fifth largest economy in the world and would survive inside or outside of the EU. But simply surviving is not good enough, we need our country to thrive. Voting to remain in the EU as part of a 500 million people strong free trade zone is the best way to achieve that. "

Many thanks for Maria for speaking at this event, and the Red Lion for the great setting and delicious breakfast.

Demand for its telemarketing and business development expertise has led Hedge End-based The Call Business to increase the scale of its operations and restructure its growing team. The promotion of two key members to senior positions has been necessary to maintain exceptional service levels during a period of rapid growth, which has seen new clients joining from sectors that include manufacturing, technology and the creative industries who are keen to build relationships with new customers.

The Call Business MD, Andi Catt, comments: “Hampshire businesses are doing an exceptional job providing quality products and services locally and around the world, and many of them require a helping hand to get their message heard and maximise their income by engaging new customers. I’m privileged to work with an outstanding group of people

who have collectively helped us grow 31% in the past year. I’m especially pleased to have promoted Melanie and Claire, two people who have been instrumental to our success.”

Melanie Clarke, who joined mid-2014, has been promoted to Client Director, and Claire Grant, who has been with the company for two years, returns from maternity leave in May to a new position as Client Service and Quality Manager.

prospective customers based on a good understanding of your product, your market and your offer. Sometimes clients have leads which simply need following up, which we are happy to do. For clients who wish to target very specific markets though, we can generate quirky, engaging direct mail campaigns which can dramatically increase our chances of having an engaged conversation.”

Alan was up against stiff competition, with fellow finalists Lee Biggins, from Fleet-based CV Library and Nick Thompson from DCSL Software, based in Farnborough.

On the actual night Alan promised: "I'm going to use this award to help inspire others to become entrepreneurs, and would certainly recommend other business owners to give it a go and enter"

Entry into the INSPIRE16 Business Awards is free yet the positive effects a win can have are invaluable. There are 12 award categories, one suitable for every size and type of business,

and promotion gained through being short listed for, or winning an award can really make a big difference to your business. The awards are open to entries from businesses based in one of the following local authority areas; Basingstoke and Deane, Hart, Rushmoor and the Test Valley.

Now is the time for businesses to put themselves forward to be in with the chance of picking up an award at the November ceremony. To enter your business into this year’s awards visit www.inspirebusinessawards.co.uk.

The Inspire Business Awards 2016, north Hampshire’s largest and most prestigious business awards, are now open for entries, until 26th August. The awards celebrate the success and achievement of all types of businesses across north Hampshire.Organised and managed by Destination Basingstoke, the glittering awards dinner was attended by 600 people last year, representing more than 180 businesses from the region.

“Inspire is an awards programme, not just a good night out, and the most important part of the programme are the awards themselves and every business that enters them and we would like to encourage customers of businesses, friends, relatives and colleagues to recommend great businesses to enter” said Felicity Edwards, Managing Director at Destination Basingstoke organisers of INSPIRE.

“The best entries are usually the result of someone persuading a business to enter, someone that can reassure them that it’s worth investing the time in putting together a really good entry.”

Previous winner Alan Donegan did just that, and was delighted when it was announced he had won Entrepreneur of the Year at the Inspire15 Business Awards.

The irrepressible Basingstoke businessman, who is behind the PopUp Business School, could not have been happier at winning the richly deserved accolade.

“It was fantastic,” recalled Alan, “The venue was full of energy – there was a wonderful uplifting atmosphere. It was quite an event.

“Winning the award created quite a social media buzz for us. We got some great publicity and the story made it into the local papers and on the radio too.

“It also allowed me to have sales conversations with two local councils. But above all it gave us recognition for the good work we have been doing.”

The Winchester Business Awards 2016, held on Friday 3rd June, was a huge success. With the largest number of tables and guests we’ve ever had, the evening was completely sold out. The Guildhall was adorned with apple centrepieces and green tableware to celebrate the principle sponsor, Denplan. Stephen Gates, Managing Director of Denplan welcomed us and explained why Denplan were delighted to be sponsoring the awards again this year.

Ian Murray, Editor in Chief of Newsquest Hampshire and Eloise Appleby, Assistant Director (Economy and Communities) at Winchester City Council paired up to present the awards. The duo were certainly crowd pleasers and kept the audience entertained throughout the evening.

The evening kicked off with the presentation of the

‘Millennium Egg’, a prestigious lifetime achievement award. This year it was presented to Stewart Dunn, the CEO of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce. Stewart has enjoyed an extensive career, including working for regional newspapers and even launching a radio station.

We were then treated to a presentation from female rally champion, Penny Mallory, who described how she had lived a fast and exciting life competing in a male dominated world and then went on to become a successful television presenter.

This year we introduced several new categories to the competition and entries were at an all-time high, making the judge’s decision extremely hard. Each shortlisted business should feel extremely proud to represent business excellence in the city.

We then welcomed Stephen Gates back to the stage to present the prestigious Denplan Business of the Year Award. The lucky winners were Anchor Pipework, who also scooped the Rooster Creative Marketing Small – Medium Enterprise Award earlier in the evening. Congratulations!

We would like to thank everybody who was involved in the awards, from the Chamber of Commerce, to the Guildhall, to the caterers, to the hosts, speakers and of course, our kind sponsors – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Maureen, the Chamber’s Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Operations, was named Director of the Year, while Lizz, who sits on the Portsmouth & South East Hampshire Area Committee, won the Shirlaws Lifetime Achievement Award.

Maureen said she was thrilled to receive her award, adding: “The Venus Awards are a great way to celebrate what women can achieve in business and, at the same time, inspire younger women setting out on their careers.”

The winners of this year’s

awards, held in association with the Peter Cooper Motor Group, were announced at a ceremony and gala dinner attended by more than 160 guests at The Pyramids in Southsea.

There were 14 categories in all, attracting a record entry of 1,100 nominations and applications.

The evening was hosted by Shelley Jory-Leigh, the Hampshire-born British powerboat champion who, away from sport, runs a successful family bridal business.

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series comes to Portsmouth for round two.

The spectacular sight of America’s Cup racing returns to British waters this summer when the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series takes place in Portsmouth 22-24 July 2016. Featuring the best sailors in the world competing on sleek AC45 catamarans that ‘fly’ on foils at astonishing speeds.

The first Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth event, held in July 2015, saw close to a quarter of a million people visit Portsmouth to watch the six America’s Cup teams battle it out on high-speed, flying catamarans. KPMG estimated that the 2015 event resulted in a staggering £9m Gross Value Added to the UK economy.

2016 will capitalize on the successes of 2015 by including a new-look ‘Race Village’ on Southsea seafront, offering spectators close-up views of the racing, the opportunity to meet America’s Cup experts, including the sailors, and an exciting array of local traders in the local market run by Love Southsea. Southsea Skate Park will also offer visitors the chance to try something new and show more exhilarating action with world class BMX champions performing.

Don’t just expect the high speed action to be on the water; across the weekend the event will also have thrilling air displays from the Red Arrows, the Red Bull Matadors and the Blades.

of Sales/Business Development

• No common language or process

• Lack of good new leads• Not closing a high

enough percentage of opportunities

• Struggle to get decisions from prospective clients

• Spending too much time on proposals and unpaid consulting

• Losing out to the competition

• Discounting too much / high cost of sale

• Management • Making the wrong hires• Sales team revolving

door • Too many average

performers in the business

• Culture of excuse making

• No clear strategy of how to grow the business

• Inaccurate forecasting
