IT’S SHOWTIME!
July/August 2014 Volume 14, Issue 6
WELCOME AMY PERRY! The Middleton Public Library staff is pleased to welcome Amy Perry, our long-term substitute for Head of Youth Services, Amanda Struckmeyer, during Amanda’s maternity leave. Amy comes to Madison from San Francisco, where she worked as a children’s librarian for eight
years in a variety of settings, including a bookmobile. She is passionate about providing excellent library services to children and families, and she is excited to join our staff. Amy looks forward to facilitating pro-gramming for ‘tweens, including science-based pro-
gramming, arts and crafts, and events incorporating physical movement. A jewelry maker in her spare time, Amy hopes to hold jewelry making events for ‘tweens. Two of Amy’s favorite authors are Neil Gaiman and Suzanne Collins, and she loves the Pete the Cat books by James Dean. She enjoys running, cooking, garden-ing, art projects, and playing the ukulele. If she can muster the courage, she says she’ll bring her ukulele in for storytime! Amy is an animal lover; she has four cats at home. She lived in the Madison area in 1996, and she’s very happy to be back. Be sure to say hello to Amy the next time you’re at the library!

There are still open shifts, between 9:00am and 3:00pm for this pilot effort. In addition, the Friends are seeking vol-unteers who would work later shifts: Thursdays, 3:00 - 6:00 or 6:00 - 8:00, and Fridays, 3:00 - 5:00. LIBRARY EVENTS FOR ADULTS TWO AUTHOR EVENTS IN THE MONTH OF JULY: Historian and Archivist Michael Edmonds discusses Risking Everything: A Freedom Summer Reader Wednesday, July 9th at 7:00 PM Risking Everything documents the 1964 Freedom Summer project, when SNCC and CORE workers and volunteers went to Mississippi to challenge segrega-tion. More than 60,000 black Mississippians risked everything to join them. In the 44 original documents in this anthology, you'll read their letters, eavesdrop on their meetings, shudder at their suffering, and ad-mire their courage. These vivid primary sources, col-lected by the Wisconsin Historical Society, provide firsthand accounts of this astounding grassroots struggle. Copies of the book will be offered for sale courtesy of the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Author and Poet Dale Kushner discusses her debut novel The Conditions of Love Thursday, July 19th at 7:00 PM The Conditions of Love traces the journey of a girl from childhood to adulthood as she reckons with her parents’ abandonment, her need to break from socie-ty’s limitations, and her overwhelming desire for love. In 1953, ten-year-old Eunice lives in the backwaters of Wisconsin with her outrageously narcissistic mother, a manicurist and movie star worshipper. Abandoned by her father as an infant, Eunice worries that she will become a misfit like her mother. Rescued from a freak storm by the shaman-like Rose, Eunice’s odyssey be-gins.
The event will conclude with a Q&A and book signing. Copies of Ms. Kushner’s novel, recently released in paperback, will be available for sale at the event.
AND FOR THOSE APPROACHING RETIREMENT AGE: “Retirementology” Tuesday, July 15th at 6:00 PM Retirementology is a class designed to prepare cur-rent and future retirees for their retirement years and provide the skills necessary to accomplish the number one goal amongst retirees – to not run out of money. This class is a broad overview of items that retirees need to be cognizant of in planning their retirement. It will help answer questions such as: What types of decisions will I encounter in planning my retirement and what are my options? How do I figure out how much I need to have saved in order to retire? How can I make sure I cannot run out of my retirement savings? How will I be taxed in retirement? Getting to Know Medicare Thursday, July 17th at 10:00 AM Whether you're new to Medicare or have had it for years, most people have questions. Come join us and learn the details of Medicare. There are always changes happening, so bring your questions and have them answered by licensed professionals. This is an educational seminar. There will be no products mar-keted or sold. Please feel free to bring a family mem-ber or friend.
Let’s Talk About Texts: Middleton Public Library’s Other Book Group will discuss Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami on July 31st at 7:00 PM. Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibili-
ties of life unbearable. As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman. A poignant story of one college student's romantic coming-of-age, Norwegian Wood takes us to that distant place of a young man's first, hopeless, and heroic love. We meet in the upstairs room at the Craftsman Table & Tap, 6712 Frank Lloyd Wright Ave in Middleton. Everyone is welcome!
Introduction to Audacity, the free audio editing software Thursday, August 21st at 6:00 PM - Archer Room Audacity is a free, open source software program that can record music; convert it to other formats; and mix, copy, or change the speed of a recording. Learn how to use its many functions with our instructor, Chip Van Dan, an electronic musician and open-source software enthusiast who’s been combining these passions for over a decade. Open to everyone age 13 and up. (Several laptops will be available for attendees to use during and after the class, but participants are encouraged to download the free soft-ware and bring their own laptops as well).

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK Inspired Visiting with library users always inspires me. The ones I remember the most challenge my under-standing of how libraries impact people in a per-sonal way. Whether it’s reading a poem or a lengthy novel, hearing a lyric or a new language, learning about a new concept or trading parent-ing tips, creating an art project or seeing a paint-ing on display, these stories are powerful remind-ers that the community benefits from library ser-vices, the encounters we have with one another in a shared space and the exposure to culture, arts, music, technology and literature. Thanks to all who have shared your stories!
THE STAIRWELL GALLERY By Phil Nelson, Designer of the Community Canvases mosaic In this life we seek to find that which gives us joy.
Times with friends, family, a sunny day, a rainy day, seeing the first snowfall, a smile on a child’s face, or a relaxing cup of coffee or tea. For each of us joy comes in many forms. Whether we realize it or not, we create those moments and memories. They are part of our story. Creating in itself is a joy we’ve all experienced from the idea, to the planning, to its finish. To have put one’s self into the creation and then be appreciated by others is an added joy. This gallery is a bringing together of our commu-nity in a testimony to the creative human spirit and a glimpse into the life story of each person whose work hangs upon this wall. My hope is that as you view these works separately and as a whole you will find a bit of joy that each individual had in making these unique works of art.
