Reflection - from Rev Alun Burke My fellow believers,
I love to read. My Mam and Dad taught me at a very young age that
books are wonderful things, and I have enjoyed reading ever since.
Val shares this love with me.
Reading trains our minds. We learn to think and share ideas, thoughts
and insights. I was quite young when I read T E White’s ‘The Once and
Future King’. It remains vivid to this day. Reading can touch our emo-
tions as Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ did for me. Perhaps most
importantly reading can feed our spirits as if God is speaking to us.
We would say this is true of the Bible with its history, not that the
writers are necessarily the best historians - they tell what they can
draw lessons from instead of just relating facts and would therefore
be regarded as biased, legends and myths, with its philosophy,
theology, parables, poems, prayers, wisdom and ……... we could go on!
In my coming into faith in my teen years, a book that helped me
tremendously was John Robinson’s ‘Honest to God. The Bishop taught
us to understand God as underlying all things - all life - everything
that exists. God, in the popular mind, has been seen as a sky God and
there was considerable opposition to this new understanding. We all
think this way now. It made faith possible for so many. John also
taught us that there is no such thing as infallibility, in either man or
book, and the Bible will only speak to us if we have a critical approach
to it. Its insights and truths really speak to us when we stop worrying
about its reliability as history or science, and allow God to speak His
truth to us through its words.
Another faith book I treasure is Marcus J Borg’s ‘Jesus’- Uncovering
the life, teaching and relevance of a religious revolutionary’. Worth
every moment of the time spent lost in it’s pages.
Happy reading
Blessings AlunAlunAlunAlun

YOU ARE INVITED TO A
CELEBRATION!!
On Sunday 6th October, we’re proposing to hold a
celebration of 120 years of Northgate
and of completion of the maintenance work on the
Church.
There will be a Bring and Share Tea at 4pm - bring a
plate of something good to share -
to be followed by Songs of Praise at 5:30pm.
Rev Derick Chambers will lead the service.
We hope to advertise this event to the Circuit.
We need a team of volunteers to help with making
posters, advertising, putting up tables, making tea,
washing up etc.
Please see Jenny Beaglehole or any of the Stewards if
you can help in any way.
We also need some suggestions of favourite hymns,
together with the reason why you love the hymn.
Obviously there is a limit to the number we can sing in
a short service,
so we may need to pick them out of a hat!!!

‘Saving’ Grace
Jesus and Satan were having a heated discussion about who was
better on his computer. They had been going at it for days and God
was getting rather frustrated with the ongoing dispute.
Finally, God said, “Cool it. I am going to set up a test that will run for a
day and I will judge who does the better job.”
So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed and moused
away. They did spreadsheets and presentations. They wrote reports.
They sent faxes. They sent e-mails. They set up newsgroups. They
sent out e-mails with attachments. They searched the internet. They
Twittered. They scanned. They downloaded. They uploaded and
published on-line. They did some genealogy reports. They made cards
and labels. They ripped music from their CDs and made MP3 files for
their I-Pods. They did every known job that could be done on a
computer. But ten minutes before their time was up, lightning
suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured, and
of course, the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blank screen
and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just
sighed!
The electricity finally flickered back on after a while, and each of
them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically
screaming "It's gone. It's all gone! I lost everything when the power
went out!” Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started reviewing all of his work
from the past day. Satan observed this and became very angry. “Wait!
he cheated. He must have cheated! How did he do it?”
God shrugged and simply said: “Jesus saves. . .!!"

What did the dentist say
when his wife baked a cake?
Can I do the filling?
A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph
and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem .
A small child replied, ‘They couldn’t get a baby-sitter. ‘
Lord, in the morning I start each day,
By taking a moment to bow and pray.
I start with thanks, and then give praise
For all your kind and loving ways.
Today if sunshine turns to rain,
If a dark cloud brings some pain,
I won't doubt or hide in fear
For you, my God, are always near.
I will travel where you lead;
I will help my friends in need.
Where you send me I will go;
With your help I'll learn and grow.
Hold my family in your hands,
As we follow your commands.
And I will keep you close in sight
Until I crawl in bed tonight.
Amen.

Reflection
A fisherman had landed his catch of fish, cleaned his nets, and was
resting by the water’s edge, watching the sea, thinking about his
day, and enjoying life.
A rich man came strolling by. He could see that the fisherman
looked relaxed and peaceful, but asked him:
“Why are you not working?”
The fisherman was surprised at being asked the question,
and replied:
“I’ve just finished unloading my catch for the day.
”“But you’ve time to go out and get more fish”, said the rich man.
“Why should I do that?” asked the fisherman.
“So that you can sell them and make more money”, explained the
rich man.
“But what would I do with the money?” asked the fisherman.
“You could buy a bigger boat,” the rich man said.
“But why?” asked the fisherman.
“Obviously you could catch more fish and make even more money,
then you’d be rich,” replied the rich man.
“Why would I want to be rich?” asked the poor fisherman.
“Then you’d be able to sit back and enjoy life!”
remarked the rich man.
“But that’s exactly what I’m doing now” said the fisherman,
sitting by the water’s edge.
