PLANNINGmattersIf An Emergency Happens, Are You Prepared?

iExperts say that there is an increasing prevalence of natural disasters. Statistics show that when such events occur, the human, economic and environmental impact can be substantial. According to a study by U.S. research firm The Gartner Group, 43 percent of companies impacted by an emergency event involving a

major loss of computer records were immediately put out of business. Another 51 percent of businesses permanently closed their doors within two years. These statistics send a strong message; business continuity planning is critical to the success and resiliency of your business.

What about your level of personal emergency preparedness…do you have a 72-Hour Emergency Kit to help cope in the hours and days following an emergency? Have you set aside non-perishable food, tools, clothing, first aid supplies, and copies of important documents such as I.D. and insurance policies? Will you be able to sustain your family while emergency

responders focus initial efforts on critically injured people?

The City of Peterborough has a comprehensive emergency management program including response plans, training, testing, public information, and education. Since the flood in 2004, the City has established a permanent Emergency Operations Centre for coordinating multi-agency emergency response efforts; established a permanent Public Inquiry Centre to disseminate emergency information (876-4636); developed Business Continuity Plans for critical operations; developed an Emergency Social Services plan for the provision of emergency food, clothing, lodging, and personal services; and enhanced partnerships to increase community resiliency

t’s a normal Wednesday workday. A severe thunderstorm is forecast. Mid-day skies become dark with an eerie mix of black and green clouds. Local radio stations report a tornado warning in effect. You take cover. Shortly thereafter you experience the impact of strong funneling winds. Office windows are shattered. A large portion of your facility roof is blown off. Systems are destroyed. Critical items are missing. Debris is everywhere.

Could this happen to you? The answer is yes.

and response capacity. Exercise drills are an integral component of the program. In the past year alone, there have been exercises related to pandemic influenza, high heat emergencies, aircraft incidents, nuclear incidents, severe winter storms and tornadoes.

The success with which Peterborough responds and recovers from an emergency is not solely dependent upon a solid municipal emergency management program but, equally, the planned actions of residents and businesses.

If you have not done so, now is the time to start personal emergency planning and business continuity planning. The City of Peterborough website offers a variety of information and tools to assist you in your planning efforts – log onto www.peterborough.ca/emergencymanagement and begin planning today!

The 7th Annual Peterborough Business Excellence Awards Dinner is being held on Wednesday, October 20th at the Trentwinds International Centre. News from the CCC

News from the OCC

CHAMBERmattersshelley gauthier, administrative assistantby

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce recently applauded the government for introducing legislation to modernize the Copyright Act and thereby strengthen intellectual property (IP) protection in Canada.

“This bill demonstrates the government’s recognition that better IP protection lays the foundation for future economic growth and job creation,” said Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “The Copyright Act amendments announced today are welcomed by Canada’s business community as an important step to ensure a competitive, thriving economy.”

No industry is immune to the theft of intellectual property. Counterfeiting and piracy have a significant impact on consumers, businesses and governments,

through safety issues, lost sales, reduced investment and lower tax revenues.

Bill C-32 will implement the provisions of the World Intellectual Property Protection Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty and the WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty. The Canadian Chamber endorses the ratification of these treaties, which were signed by Canada more than a decade ago, and supports a made-in-Canada approach.

The passage of Bill C-32 will improve digital IP safeguards. Other measures, such as enhanced border protection against counterfeits and an updated patent regime, are also needed.

For more information on Canadian Chamber of Commerce activities, please visit their website at www.chamber.ca

The OCC has written a letter to the Minister of Consumer Services, The Honourable Sophia Aggelonitis, expressing support as well as some concerns for Bill 65, the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. Bill 65 is an attempt to modernize the governance structure and activities of charities and not-for-profit organizations.

“The OCC is concerned that Bill 65’s “as of right” system would eliminate the review and approval process that the Ministry of Government Services currently has in place. The OCC is of the view that an “as of right” system may not safeguard a corporation’s name against misuse and could lead to invalid corporations operating in Ontario.”

The letter is accompanied by a copy of a submission from July 2007 regarding the modernization of the Corporations Act.
