The lea ding cause o death in the United States is rom car diac(heart) disease. It is crucial that Americans o all ages be concerned
about and identiy their Cardiac Risks. In this article I will outline
some modiiable and non-modiiable risk actors, certain tests
which are important to obtain as a part o routine health screen-
ing & lastly some measures to take to reduce the risks. To deine
Cardiac Disease, we mean to say, atherosclerosis o the coronary
arteries or the hardening o the arteries that eed the heart muscle.
In general there are several established risk actors that include:
Family History, Advanced Age, Male Gender, Postmenopausal
Status in Women, Tobacco Use, Diabetes & Kidney Failure, Thyroid
dysunction, Hypertension, Elevated Cholesterol (LDL), Low HDL-
C, Elevated Homocysteine, Lp (a), Sedentary Liestyle, Increased
States o Inlammation, Poor Nutrition, Elevated Fibrinogen, Low
Socioeconomic status, and Low circulating Antioxidants. Traditionally
physicians have ocused on amily history, hypertension, tobacco
use, gender, cholesterol, sedentary liestyle & diabetes. It is becom-
ing increasingly clear that there are other independent risk actors
that should be assessed or the simple reason that coronary artery
disease (CAD) can be ound in people with negative amily history
and normal cholesterol levels. There is probably too much emphasis
today ocused exclusively on lowering total cholesterol and LDL-C
when it is apparent rom research and population studies that
these risk actors are not impacting many o the patients with CAD.
Checking the oxidized-LDL may actually be more important as well
as total oxidative load and total oxidative protection index, than just
a standard lipid prole. Assessing Vitamin A, Beta-carotene levels,Vitamin C and Tocopherol (Vit. E) levels may also play an important
role. Vitamins B-6, B12 and Folate should also be measured since
they play a major role in metabolism and elimination o homocyste-
ine. Another vitamin like substance known as ubiquinone or coen-
zyme Q10 has a tremendous role in cardiac health. Studies mostly out
o Japan have shown that deciencies in coenzyme Q10 can throw
a patient into congestive heart ailure. Certainly assessing serum
levels o coenzyme Q10 may be important in certain individuals.
Those olk s with elevated Lipoprotein (a) or Lp(a) have an increased
risk o coronary artery disease, again that is something that should
be checked as part o a comprehensive cardiac risk assessment.
Elevated Fibrinogen, which can cause blood to clot abnormally, is also
another testable independent risk actor. Homocysteine has come to
the oreront lately ater the publishing o studies and a text by Dr.Kilmer McCully as yet another important independent risk actor or
heart disease. While this is now just becoming more routine in cardiac
testing it certainly is a treatable risk actor that patients should be aware.
Unortunately there are some non-modiable risk actors that dey
treatment such as amily history (probably the strongest o all risk
actors), advanced age (hormonal considerations), the male g en-
der, and low socioeconomic status. But identiying modiable risk
actors and implementing changes will drastically lessen a persons
risk or coronary disease and heart attack, especially i a person has
one or more non-modiable risk actors. These modiable actors
are the postmenopausal state in women, tobacco usage, diabetes
(managing high glucose levels), maintaining proper thyroid unc-
tion, controlling high blood pressures, decreasing elevated levels
o cholesterol, decreasing elevated homocysteine levels, lowering
circulating inlammatory mediators, improving nutrition, increas-
ing circulating antioxidants and implementing an exercise program.
For your own good cardiac health it is important to seek out those
proactive physicians who will order both the esoteric as well as the
routine cardiac risk proles. Also it should be pointed out that the
endpoint o all therapies to lower risk o coronary artery disease is the
reduction o plaques on the arteries. Thereore, studies should be per-
ormed as a baseline and to determine i therapy is eective via non-
invasive Electron Beam (or Siral) CT scan o the heart or calcium score.
The higher on the arch, the higher the contribution
o the risk actor to heart disease. Five o the eight controllable
risk actors are largely under the control o diet.

Patient StoriesWhat is the deal with this WellnessOne all about? I had driven
by it several times and never took the time to stop and ind out.
Several issues were going on in my lie and no one, mainly doc-
tors, wanted to hear about all o them. Separation o my body parts
and my needs had to be armed out to dierent specialists and
modalities(treatments-sometimes my nursing background sneaks
in). Sick o that mentality and being in pain led me to WellnessOne.
Opening their door was by ar the most helpul thing I have or mysel
in a long time. Greeted by a most delightul and caring reception-
ist was to be only the beginning! An appointment was made or the
next day or a massage since I was having muscle pain everywhere. I
have bromyalgia and was having a fare-up. I, also, was looking or a
riendly, compassionate and proessional massage therapist. Not only
was Darin a ne and knowledgeable massage therapist he became a
major orce in my lie. He not only greatly exceeded all o my expec-
tations as ar as medical needs but also lled my inspirational needs.
As time passed, WellnessOne became my home away rom home-I threat-
ened to bring my pillow and take over a room repeatedly. Expansion
has been a welcome site as it brings more riends to meet-both clients
and sta. Small inormational chats have been beneicial to clients
and amily members. I have loved going to these meetings as it makes
any problems easy to discuss and I get answers that are highly helpul.
Dr. Saleeby is a most welcomed addition to the sta. He was con-
cerned with ME and not my chart. A plan was prescribed or my
health needs and not my illness. The diet, massage, inared booth
and eventually chiropractic intervention helped me to nd mysel. Dr.
Ed Thomas, the chiropractor with best southern accent I ever heard,
has given me more mobility than I thought possible. No medicationI took ever gave me pain-ree days like I now have. Having to have a
MRI, see a pain management doctor and a physical therapist or severe
arthritis in my back I, now, have all my needs met at WellnessOne.
Oh, lest I orget, colonic hydrotherapy was in my uture treat-
ment. All, OK most, o the toxins in my digestive system have been
cleared out in a ew treatments. Never elt so clean and empty in my
lie! The newest equipment and the proessionalism shown to me
made this experience pleasant(HAHA) instead o embarrassing. You
should try it sometime. My muscle pains, headaches and digestive
problems have cleared entirely or been lessened to a great degree.
My attitude is back-I am rom Upstate NY, and the real me has been
released! Activity was absent and now is a welcome addition
back in my lie. Aches and pains are not my lead in with conversa-
tion. What can we go do and when are we going is where I am com-
ing rom now. O course, WellnessOne, is highly recommended
to my amily, riends, acquaintances and healthcare providers.
My needs have been met, both physical and emotional. I have a new
understanding o my needs and have learned how to control them and
not have them control me. Heartelt thanks to all I have met and now
count as riends at WellnessOne -the most interested in You place to be!

Health Matters!with Kristen
YOUR LIQUID ASSETS.WATER!No matter what..DRINK WATER. And then when you are
done, drink some more. And then some more. But water
is boring right? Not reallynot i you look at how absolutely
essential it is to your health, and ultimately your happiness!
It took me a while to understand just how important water is to
my every day. I went a LONG time not drinking enough water,
or just drinking the 8 glasses or so a day you hear you need
growing up. No one told me when I was younger how impor-
tant water was. That was because when you are young you
can stand to live o o Capri Sun and Mello Yello. That is how I
remember my ormative years. I can actually remember drink-
ing a Mello Yello every single morning beore schoolor years.
I would explode i I did that now. Makes me sick just thinking
about it. As you get older, and i you choose to live a healthy
liestyle, you must drink lots and lots and lots o H2O! I I go a
day without drinking enough water, it is the rst thing I eel the
next day. I am usually sti, with a bad headache, and a zapped
energy level. Drinking a healthy amount o water is vital to your
health. You gain tremendous health beneits and sometimes
can even throw away your migraine medicine or pain killer.
Water not only helps your body to absorb all the essential nutri-
ents that it needs but it also helps to convert your ood into
energy! How cool is that? This is magniied when you lead
an active liestyle and get plenty o exercise. While exercis-ing you should drink water beore, during and ater. The more
vigorous your exercise, the more water youll need. Water
also cushions your joints, protects your vital organs, regu
-lates your bodys temperature and aids in removing waste.
Th in k ab ou t it th is wa yA bou t 70 % o th e ea rth s su r-
ace is water-covered but water also exists in the air as
water vapor, in the ground as soil moisture and even in
