Tualatin’s favorite annual event, the Tualatin Crawfish Festival is back- bigger and better than ever this July 31-August 2! A little history: the First Annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival took place in 1951. The purpose of the celebration was to honor the new VFW Hall that was built on Seneca St. It was during this year that crawfish inhabited the Tualatin River to excess. Thus, the idea of a Crawfish Festival was born. Friday’s kickoff event is at the Tualatin Commons with food vendors and the Whole Foods Mystery Box Chef Cook-off beginning at 5:30 pm. The fun continues with the high-energy sounds of Hit Machine in concert at 7:30 pm. Saturday the fun moves to Tualatin Community Park with the annual pancake breakfast sponsored by Village Inn and the “Crawfish Crawl” a 5K, 10K, and half marathon run and walk. Other events include: Oregon Corks and Kegs micro beers and wine tasting, the Petco “Atsa My Dawg Show,” kids’ activities, the Tualatin Home Improvement Show, and the Dodgeball tournament. Several crowd favorites also return on Saturday with the live crawfish boil and crawfish eating contest and, of course, lots of food booths and great vendors. Saturday’s musical entertainment begins at 10:00 am and features The Aphrodisiacs at 4:00 pm, and Seattle’s favorite The Rock Stars, who will take the main stage at 7:00 pm. The festival continues on Sunday, August 2 until 6:00 pm. The Corks & Kegs area and all food and vendor booths will continue through Sunday. Sunday’s entertainment headliner is fan favorite, Doublewide, who will appear on the main stage at 3:30 pm. Many other fun family events will make the 65th year of this annual Tualatin treasure the best ever! Saturday and Sunday Daily Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. The Friday events are free—thanks to the Ford Experience tour. For more information go to the event website at www. TualatinCrawfishFestival.com.

There is a tail wagging good time happening in the Tualatin Dog Park on the second Saturday morning of the month, September through July. An energetic group of

Dog Park Ambassadors are spreading joy and bark chips within the dog park to provide safe traction for their canine companions to play and socialize.

Since the program began in July of last year, 56 active Ambassadors have dedicated over 384 hours to the dog park, moving a total of 620 wheelbarrows of bark chips and planting 3 Autumn Purple Ash trees. That is plenty to bark about! Jane Heathman, one of the

Volunteer at the Dog Park

Last month, Tualatin was named by NerdWallet.com as the 4th best city in Oregon to open a business! The study took into consideration demographic and commerce data that analyzed the business climate and local economic health. Tualatin is fortunate to be at the forefront of world and regional economic growth. Private sector development is growing, local companies are expanding and hiring at record pace, and unemployment remains low.

Tualatin is one of the Top 5 Best Oregon Cities to Open a Business

Job GrowthIn each of the last three years, the total number of jobs has increased by more than 5%, bringing the total number of jobs in Tualatin to over 25,500. Given the additional job opportunities, the local unemployment rate has decreased to nearly 4%.

Growing Our Own“Made in Tualatin” products are in high demand! Companies like Lam Research, Sawstop, Pacific Foods, Barker Cabinets,

founding Ambassadors, has participated in many of these Saturday events, checking in volunteers and tracking wheel barrows. Volunteering in the dog park is natural for Jane. An animal lover and advocate, she owns Give Me a Break Animal Care and works part time at Reynolds Kennels. Jane can be found volunteering throughout Tualatin and was recognized by the City as Senior Volunteer of the Year in 2015.

The next opportunity to join the fun is July 11, 8:30-10:30 am. The Ambassadors will take a break in August to beat the heat, but will start up again in September. For more information or to sign up to be a Dog Park Ambassador, visit www.tualatinoregon.gov/volunteer or contact Jackie Konen, [email protected].

Water Quality ReportAs you probably noticed, a brochure was included with your utility bills this month advertising some of the water services that are provided to our customers. This brochure was notification that the Annual Water Quality Report for 2014 is now available on our website www.tualatinoregon.gov/waterqualityreport.

If you would like a FREE printed copy of the report call 503.691.3093 or email [email protected].

Street SweepingStreet sweeping will occur August 3-14, weather permitting. For specific information on street sweeping in your area, check out our street sweeping map at www.tualatinoregon.gov/publicworks/street-sweeping-program.

Thermal Modifications Technologies, Oregon Wine Services and Storage, and Union Wine are all expanding right here in Tualatin because of the success of their products. Some of these expansions are adding buildings to the tax rolls that support our schools and city services. Others are providing new job opportunities for Tualatin residents.

Development ActivityIn addition to the existing companies that are expanding, there are numerous manufacturing and industrial buildings under construction which will add over 500,000 square feet of space for new and expanding businesses. Many of the buildings do not yet have businesses lined up as tenants. Development companies have taken on the risk of gathering permits and constructing the buildings while they actively recruit prospective businesses. This type of development signifies a high level of confidence in the local market.

Benefits of Economic GrowthWhile the face of Tualatin is changing, it’s common to ask: what are the benefits of this growth? First, jobs in our key industries, such as advanced manufacturing, pay nearly double the average wage in Tualatin. In addition, the business community provides approximately half of Tualatin’s tax base that supports the parks, trails, roads, and public safety.

Tualatin has been selected as one of America’s Best Communities, and is a finalist in the competition sponsored by

Frontier Communications. An application was submitted in March 2015 outlining a proposal to add shared community gathering space to bring the elements of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) together in one place. Tualatin’s businesses have a demand for a highly technically skilled workforce to meet the increasing number of jobs. There is a great need to develop students’ skills and cultivate interest at all grade levels in careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Tualatin’s application was about more than just STEM jobs, but about STEAM...the ‘A’ stands for the Arts. Technical jobs also require creativity and ingenuity, so it is important to cultivate those skills in students. The purpose of STEAM is not just about teaching the arts (language, performing, design, etc.) but to apply art in real situations. Applied knowledge leads to deeper learning.

Tualatin faces an intrinsic need in the community for gathering space. This

Science & Technology Scholarship WinnersMadison Cochran was selected to receive the $400 Tualatin Science and Technology Scholarship for 2015. Ms. Cochran will attend the University Honors College at Oregon State University to study biology. This scholarship for Tualatin students is awarded from a trust established by a local manufacturer.

America’s Best Community…Tualatin is in the Running!

has been outlined in the community vision ‘Tualatin Tomorrow,’ and it is central to this proposal. To assist in building skills and programs related to STEAM, Tualatin needs space to gather. While technology has helped many individuals connect online, there is still a great need to connect in person for education, appreciating the arts and cultural experiences, and entertainment. These activities help to build a strong community and a robust economy.

A total of $50,000 has been received from the national sponsors and Tualatin’s local sponsor, Intel. This money is to be used to complete the planning process for the competition entry. The process will be an inclusive one, with many opportunities for Tualatin residents and businesses to offer ideas and provide feedback. However, another $15,000 must be raised in matching contributions from the community to demonstrate local support for the plan and to qualify for the semifinal round. Eight finalist teams will receive an additional $100,000 to implement their plans and compete for the three top prizes of $1, $2 and $3 million dollars! You can find out how to donate to the effort and join Team Tualatin at www.tualatinabc.org.

The Tualatin ABC Team is led by Mask & Mirror Community Theatre and the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce, with additional support from the City of Tualatin, Tualatin Tomorrow Advisory Committee, and the South Metro-Salem STEM Partnership, hosted by Oregon Tech.

@MayorOgdenBus service on Tualatin-Sherwood Road will be coming soon! Recently, TriMet announced that new bus service will be added to serve residents and businesses in Tualatin! The Tualatin community has been advocating for increased transit service for years, and we are excited about this coming improvement. The bus route will run along Tualatin-Sherwood Road between Tualatin and Sherwood. While one bus line

will not meet all of our transit needs, it is a big step in the right direction and I feel optimistic about the future.

This new service will connect riders on the Westside Express Service (WES) to the employment areas in Tualatin’s industrial areas, therefore connecting people to their jobs and hopefully relieving some congestion on the roads. In addition, TriMet has partnered with Ride Connection to expand shuttle service around Tualatin. Ride Connection provides a “last-mile” transit connection by assisting riders in getting to work from downtown Tualatin and other existing transit stops. Traffic congestion and limited transit service continue to be Tualatin’s biggest challenges, and it is exciting that our partners are working hard to help us address these issues and improve the overall livability in our community.

Farmers Market

Join the Tualatin Farmers Market this summer at a new place and time! The Market is now on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm in the Tualatin Public Library

parking lot. This new venue gives the Market greater visibility and allows integration with the thriving community growing in the heart of our city. This summer’s Farmers Market will run June 13-September 26, thus offering the abundant late summer harvest to local residents. Stop by and be sure to stock up on local produce, honey, baked goods, meats, cheeses and more. Connect with local community groups at the Community Booth. Enjoy live music, featuring local musicians each week. Grab a bite to eat from hot food vendors. The Tualatin Farmers Market is proud to accept the Oregon Trail EBT Card. We have a token matching program (up to $10 per week) for SNAP participants thanks to generous sponsors. See you there!

All City Council and Advisory Committee meetings are open to the public and provide an opportunity for citizen comment. The agenda and packet materials are available for review in the Library, City offices and at www.tualatinoregon.gov generally seven calendar days prior to the Council meeting.

Unless otherwise noted, all meetings are held in the Juanita Pohl Center, 8513 SW Tualatin Rd (in Community Park).

Watch City Council meetings live on www.tualatinoregon.gov/citycouncil, the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 7:00 pm
