WORLD STUDIES
“Our Environment” is the theme of our World Study. The students at secondary level were introduced to Rachel Louise Carson, a 20th century marine biologist and conservationist who had advanced the global environmental movement. The students were introduced to Vexillology, the study of flags. The students saw a small clip from Big Bang Theory and then, were shown the 12 basic flag designs. Towards the end of the session, they were urged to conduct independent research on their own accord. Furthermore, they had also prepared a news talk on the India-China standoff which was presented in the session. They were introduced to marine pollution and how the humans and oceans were closely connected to each other. They discussed the impacts of plastic and other particulates to the oceans. They were also introduced to ocean zones following which they were asked to create PPTs on the same. Towards the end of the month, they were introduced to the practice of marine farming and the varied forms of life in the ocean. They watched a TED talk on the benefits of marine farming. After the talk, they had a virtual tour of life in the sea, where they witnessed sea lions, sea turtles, coral formations and other creatures. As for the book of the month, students had an enriching discussion about Rachel Carson’s ‘The Silent Spring’ which shed light on the harm caused by excess chemicals on the environment. A week later, they watched snippets from the movie, ‘A Plastic Ocean’ where humans had become secondary consumers of plastic.

“Innovation is taking two things that exist and putting them together in a new way.“ Tom Freston Two students from year 7, viz., Gaurav Sood and Ajitesh Narasimhan, designed a game using Scratch which implemented a couple of features from Gothic novels. The feeling of uncertainty, cramped spaces and towering structures were utilized as the core principles for their games. Tishya Tiwary, a student from year 9H, has started working on an original retelling of the fairy tale, ‘The Beauty and the Beast.’ Set in the French Revolution, her story recreates the characters in a more believable setting. The first draft of Beauty and the Beheaded is slated for completion by this autumn.
