THE DENTISTRY SHOW WHAT’S NEW?

so What’s new?Dedicated to continuing the growth and success of previous years, and to ensure as many professionals as possible are able to attend, The Dentistry Show and DTS have changed their dates from 2015 onwards.

The 2015 Show will take place on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April, enabling dentists and practice owners, who will be busy completing UDA quotas in March, to attend with their teams without any added stress. In a survey of 756 dentists who hadn’t attended the Show in 2013 or 2014, 69% said they were likely or very likely to be able to visit if the Show was held in April - supporting the decision to change the dates for 2015 onwards.

It is anticipated that over 7,500 delegates will be in attendance over the two days, making the very most of the high level clinical and business education and free vCPD available.

Increased networking opportunities across both days will ensure you have the chance to make new contacts from across the industry and catch-up with friends and colleagues. There will also be 400+ leading suppliers

and manufacturers on the trade fl oor, promising an even more dynamic and productive event for the UK dental industry.

A particularly exciting new initiative for 2015 will be ‘Launchpad UK’. With the new dates, The Dentistry Show and DTS will now take place just after IDS in Cologne every other year, making this the perfect platform for the trade to launch and showcase the very latest products, technology and materials available to the UK market following their global unveiling in Germany just a few weeks before.

For delegates, this means that you can be sure to source all the very latest developments and innovations, with an array of brand new, cutting edge technologies and services at your disposal. In the weeks leading up to the shows, all registered delegates will receive updates and highlights on what to expect and who from, so that you can plan and maximise your time at the event. Experts will be on hand across the extensive exhibition fl oor to provide the information and advice you may need and to help ensure that your practice is at the very forefront of dentistry.

Building on the success of recent years, The Dentistry Show 2015 promises to be another unmissable event for UK dentists. With exciting changes and loads of fantastic new features and social events, there will be even more learning and networking opportunities for everyone connected to the profession, and more new products on display than ever before.

The Dental Awards 2015 is now open for entries, and as the premier awards programme of the year, it offers a tremendous accolade for everyone who becomes a fi nalist or winner. THE DENTAL AWARDS 2015 TO TAKE PLACE DURING THE DENTISTRY SHOW

We are thrilled to be supporting the dental profession in this way, and we look forward to hosting such a highly distinguished and respected event- Chris Brown, The Dentistry show

Bridge2Aid has been working tirelessly towards a world free from dental pain since 2004. The charity has set up projects in various areas around East Africa to help provide sustainable access to basic dental treatment for thousands of people.

In order to ensure this dental care provision is sustainable, the charity works with local governments to provide training for local health care workers. Volunteer professionals from across the UK visit the projects to share their own skills and expertise, enabling the health care workers to continue delivering emergency dental treatment needed in rural and developing communities. Since 2004, Bridge2Aid has provided sustainable access to safe emergency dental care for 3.1 million people in East Africa.

Despite its many outstanding achievements and successes, Bridge2Aid has also faced its fair share of challenges. The charity depends on the support and generous donations of the profession to continue its inspiring work, which, as Operations Manager Shaenna Loughnane explains, it could not do without.

“The start of the year was tough for us as a charity and we were all so grateful to the members of the profession who showed their support of our work. We are through the worst of it now and we would like to thank everyone who came to our aid!

“Our main aim for the next year is to help more people understand what we do, and to show the impact our training programmes have on the people living in

constant oral pain in rural areas of East Africa. We offer a sustainable, ethical and appropriate response to the fact that 70% of the world has NO access to oral pain relief – and this access is only available in the cities, whereas the huge majority of people live in rural areas. The charity has big plans for this year and next, we just need to raise the funds to be able to achieve them!

“On 4th October of this year we are celebrating 10 years of our Dental Volunteer Programme. We are running a ‘Birthday Bash’ at Wembley Stadium to celebrate, and all our friends, family, volunteers, donors and fundraisers are invited. More details are available on our website: www.bridge2aid.org/birthdaybash.”

If you attended The Dentistry Show 2014, you may well remember the Bridge2Aid ‘Sea of Pink’ that took over the exhibition on the Saturday, in a bid to promote its work and encourage more industry professionals to get involved.

“The Dentistry Show has given us free space for the last few years,” continues Shaenna. “We have always found it to be a fantastic Show and it certainly seems to be getting busier each year. It seems to have got the mix of exhibition time and CPD just right, and we welcomed a good number of dental professionals to our unique volunteer programme during the 2014 event. The ‘Sea of Pink’ was also a fantastic success for us – in the end, 30 exhibitors took part and it was amazing to see the support in the room. We also ran a competition offering the opportunity for a practice to become one of our Unity Partners and were delighted to receive a great response.

“As we are always looking to raise our profi le and promote the ever-growing need for dental equipment, products and training in East Africa and other developing regions of the world, we are looking forward to The Dentistry Show 2015. It will present an easy way for professionals to fi nd us and seek more information about our programmes.

“We are in talks with The Dentistry Show organisers at the moment with regards to our promotional activities for the 2015 event. We certainly aim to bring the Sea of Pink back again, but are hoping to make it even bigger and better. We have a great profession and it’s fantastic to see everyone coming together in this way. It’s also lovely to meet the people who have supported

the charity in the past, whether by donating their time, money or resources. The Dentistry Show will provide the perfect opportunity for people to visit our stand and develop their understanding of what we do – we hope to see you there!”

THE DENTISTRY SHOW - WHAT’S NEW?In addition, further proving its commitment to and support of the dental industry, The Dentistry Show is delighted be working with Purple Media Solutions to host the prestigious Dental Awards 2015. The Awards will provide a fantastic chance for delegates to come together to recognise and celebrate the many achievements of both individuals and groups in the industry.

Are The old Favourites Returning? The Dentistry Show wouldn’t be what it is without the varied and vibrant learning opportunities it has become known for. Many key features of previous years will return for 2015 including the hugely popular BSP PerioLounge, Short-Term-Orthodontics Lounge and an array of hands-on workshops and demonstrations. The impressive speaker line-up will once again consist of world-class professionals at the very top of their game, each delivering sessions designed to inform and inspire.

The dedicated conference streams will also return to ensure there is something for each and every member of the dental team, with a wide spectrum of clinical, technical and regulatory topics covered for GDPs, specialists, dental hygienists, therapists, nurses and practice managers. A lecture programme will also be provided concentrating on business topics with fresh and easy to implement ideas on how to motivate your team, enhance your marketing strategies and maximise your online presence, enabling you to develop and

grow your practice. 14 hours of verifi able and general CPD will be available for all delegates through various conference streams, helping your whole team to meet the requirements in a simple, fun way and cost effective way.

With all this and much more to look forward to, The Dentistry Show and DTS 2015 is one event you don’t want to miss. With fi rst-class education, globally recognised speakers, hands-on experiences, a fantastic social and networking programme and the chance to discover the very latest products and innovations to hit the market, what more could you need for your dental business?

If you choose to attend only one UK dental event next year, make it The Dentistry Show and DTS.

InTERVIEW WITH DR. CHRIs oRRKeen to deliver outstanding educational opportunities for all dental professionals, The Dentistry Show focuses on each individual area of the profession, as well as the team as a whole.

As in previous years, the 2015 Show will host separate conference streams

dedicated to various roles within the practice. Each one will concentrate on relevant topics, trends and issues for the respective delegates, with world-class speakers offering a wealth of practical tips and advice to enhance delegates’ every day practice.

Dr Chris Orr, Chair of the Aesthetic Dentist Conference for The Dentistry Show 2014, was delighted with last year’s success:

“Overall it was a very successful event. We had an excellent line-up of speakers who delivered an exciting and inspirational aesthetic programme. It was a pleasure for me to be involved with the Show’s organisers, who were very professional and helpful when designing the programme and organising the speakers. They also made sure that the conference ran very smoothly during the event, so that even a major problem - a speaker unable to attend due to being taken to hospital - was taken care of in a calm and effi cient manner. It was therefore not a diffi cult decision to be involved for a second year.”

Chris Orr will once again be chairing the Aesthetic Dentist Conference for the 2015 Show. Past President of the BACD, a Director of the AACD, Course Director for Advanced Dental Seminars year-long Cosmetic Dentistry training and a prominent UK cosmetic dentist, Chris has a very

good understanding of the demands on modern dentists.

“The overall goals for the 2015 conference are the same as last year - to deliver an engaging, up-to-date programme, which will be of interest to the dentists visiting the Show. CPD should be more than just collecting hours or certifi cates - it should encourage the audience to look at their own work and refl ect on how they can perform treatment as best as they can.

“To that end, in 2015 we will be focusing on how better aesthetic results can be achieved through teamwork and we will have several pairs of speakers discussing topics from different viewpoints. Appreciating another colleague’s perspective on treatment is important - whether that is the periodontist, the orthodontist or the technician. This understanding makes it easier to work together productively and to achieve outstanding results for the patient.

“We are also giving many of the speakers a little more time on the podium so that they can cover their subjects in more depth.”

And what a speaker line-up it is shaping up to be! Among those delivering presentations in 2015 will be two internationally respected professionals at the very forefront of dentistry - Dr John Kanca and Dr Luca Dalloca.

Having graduated from the University of Connecticut School Of Dental Medicine, Dr John Kanca is widely renowned for his revolutionary work in the fi eld of adhesive dentistry. He gave validation to the etching of dentin with phosphoric acid, proved that resins can be used as pulp capping agents, discovered the concept known as wet-bonding and has contributed signifi cantly

to the understanding of how resins attach to dentin.

Similarly, Dr Luca Dalloca is internationally recognised as one of the leaders in aesthetic dentistry. Having gained extensive qualifi cations from Universities in the US and Italy, he is a hugely respected lecturer and mentor in aesthetics, prosthodontics and dental technology, worldwide. Dr Dalloca’s qualifi cation and experience in both clinical and technical dentistry will offer a truly unique perspective during his lecture session.

And now, even more dentists will be able to make the most of the free, world-class education and training available. With the new dates (17th and 18th April), The Dentistry Show 2015 will no longer coincide with stressful calendar dates such as the end of the UDA cycle.

“The change in dates is an excellent idea as it removes clashes with some of the other meetings, and also with the NHS’s end of year in March, which is always a busy period for dentists,” adds Chris. “This should hopefully make it easier for those in demanding practices to be able to visit the Show.

“For dentists who want to discover what’s new in the profession and learn how they can work better with their colleagues to achieve the best result possible for their patients, this is an event to attend.”

The full education programme, including the line-up for the Aesthetic Dentist conference, will be available on the website from mid-September.

CATERInG FoR ALL THE DEnTAL InDUsTRYIf the 2014 show is anything to go by, the dental industry is in good shape. With a 9% rise in unique delegates to over 7000 total attendance* across the two days, and brisk trading reported on the show fl oor The Dentistry Show really does deliver for all that dentistry demands.

Haniya Hasan, Dentist, streatham Common Dental surgery:“There is a great mix of trade stands at the Dentistry Show. I am looking in particular for products for whitening, and endodontics to use in my practice. I have particularly enjoyed a 15 minute teaching session on one of the stands and I learned a lot from another one on the mistakes that people make.”

June McCahon, Principal Dentist, oakmor Dental Centre, Braintree, Essex:“This conference has a real buzz. The speakers are all excellent – they are wet fi ngered dentists who are at the top of their game who are working in practice and there is a lot to learn from them I have also found it useful to browse around the stands because you see a lot of things you would never think of buying – it’s really useful to know what is available. This conference is fantastic.”

Phillip Roberts, Principal Dentist, Parkhouse Dental surgery, Birmingham:“I’ve come with my Practice Manager and we have come mainly to browse around the stands. We are particularly looking at preventive dentistry products and equipment. We have found what we wanted to buy and are taking home a lot of brochures. It has been very helpful to talk to the people on the stands. This conference is excellent and we will go back to our practice with renewed enthusiasm.”

*7001 attendance over two days, excluding exhibiting staff

The Hygienist & Therapist Symposium 2015 will be a great source of information and inspiration, with the entire lecture-programme dedicated to helping you reach your full potential. You will have the perfect opportunity to not only refresh and update your skills, but

also to acquire the fresh ideas and motivation you need to signifi cantly advance your career.

Chair of the Symposium in 2015 will be Melanie Joyce, Professional Services Clinical Specialist at Ivoclar Vivadent and a fi ercely passionate and enthusiastic professional who won Dental Therapist of the Year at The Dental Awards 2013. She is also the Director of ‘Aspiradent’, and she will be able to draw on her extensive experience in creating relevant educational programmes for the 2015 conference.

“I felt that there was a lack of courses catering specifi cally to the needs of dental hygienists and therapists, so I set up the training company Aspiradent. Designed to provide the good quality CPD on current topics professionals were lacking, courses help delegates maintain their knowledge and skills, but also advance them in line with the new scope of practice.”

“Therefore, when I was asked to Chair next years’ Dentistry Show, I jumped at the chance because it meant I could create a complete programme specifi c to the needs of the modern hygienist and therapist.”

Focusing on what she hopes to deliver at The Dentistry Show 2015, Melanie has a clear focus in mind:

This years theme is ‘Maintain, develop, inspire, clarify’: • Maintain your existing knowledge and skills by keeping

up-to-date with the latest evidence and guidance

• Develop and extend your knowledge and skills to provide more for your patients

• Be inspired by your colleagues and others around you• Clarify all of your burning questions to enhance

your practice

“The idea of ‘maintain’ and ‘develop’ stems from Principle 7 of the GDC Standards for the Dental Team. The GDC want CPD to relate more closely to their set of Standards in the future, and with the planned changes to CPD requirements, this may be a good way of highlighting that.”

“Principle 7 states that patients expect to receive good quality care and treatment, and that they expect all members of the dental team to be adequately trained and qualifi ed. This means we need to keep our skills and knowledge current, remaining abreast of the latest evidence and authoritative guidance throughout our professional lives. We also need to identify our limits and refer patients appropriately whilst working within the various laws and regulations. This is a principle that we as dental hygienists and therapists are very good at following.”

“Throughout the Hygienists & Therapist Symposium 2015, we hope to both maintain and develop your knowledge and skills through a programme designed to update you on current evidence surrounding some well known topics. We also hope to deliver some truly interesting lectures that will help to advance your understanding and abilities, especially in light of changes to the scope of practice and the ever-evolving services provided in dentistry. Topics covered will include local anaesthetics, caries risk assessment, diabetes and oral health, acute dental care, orthodontics, nutrition and periodontal disease and advanced periodontal instrumentation.”

“To provide inspiration, almost the entire programme will be presented by your fellow hygienists and therapists.

Those with advanced skills and knowledge will be able to pass on their experience, ensuring that the conference is written BY dental hygienists and therapists, FOR dental hygienists and therapists. We hope our line up of speakers will inspire you to fi nd new ways to really utilise the skills you already have and extend your competencies to reach your full potential.”

Melanie is also keen for delegates to get all their questions answered, and will ensure there are plenty of opportunities for you to do just this.

“Sometimes we leave these seminars with more questions than we came with, especially when it comes to what we can and can’t do, or what we are or aren’t indemnifi ed to do. To promote clarity and ensure you get your answers, we have invited a representative from the GDC and an indemnity specialist to answer relevant questions as and when they arise. Representatives from both the BADT and BSDHT are also invited to answer any relevant questions.”

“What’s more, we are taking questions during the sessions hosted by Aspiradent via Twitter. To ask a question tweet @aspiradent - pertinent questions will be answered at the end of the session where time permits, and any unanswered questions will be responded to by the relevant person following the Show, available via the Aspiradent website: www.aspiradent.com.”

The Dentistry Show 2015 will once again be held in conjunction with DTS on 17th and 18th April at the NEC in Birmingham.

WHAT’S NEW FOR DELEGATES INJECT CONFIDENCEHave you ever thought about taking your cosmetic dentistry one step further and providing facial aesthetics procedures? Or do you already offer these but want to enhance your services?

The social pressure on the public to look a certain way has increased enormously in recent decades, and the growth of cosmetic dentistry has certainly echoed this. It has become the bread and butter of every day life for many practices throughout the UK, with patients frequently requesting treatments such as teeth whitening or cosmetic orthodontics to enhance their smile and facial appearance.

But why limit your services there? As a thoroughly trained healthcare professional, you already have medical grounding to enable you to expand your treatment offering into the area of non-surgical facial aesthetics. You understand the anatomy of the face and facial tissues, and already consider the symmetry and aesthetics of the face when delivering dental treatment. What’s more, you operate in a heavily regulated and highly hygienic environment, so you can ensure the safety of your patients during treatment. You can create the perfect smile, so why not also help create the perfect frame for that smile?

FACIAL AESTHETICSThe fi eld of facial aesthetics has grown rapidly in the past few years. The demand for surgical procedures has risen by a huge margin in 2013 alone – eyelid lifts increased by 14%,

face and neck lifts rose by 13% and eyebrow lifts were up by 17%. Non-surgical facial procedures such as botulinum toxin, dermal fi llers and facial chemical peels demonstrated a similar huge rise in popularity, accounting for 75% of the modern cosmetic market. A worldwide study conducted by the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in 2011, found that the demand for botulinum toxin came out on top, with more than 3m injections administered around the globe in a year.

According to the Department of Health, the combined cosmetic sector was worth £720m in 2005, by 2010 it was valued at £2.3bn and by 2015 the sector is forecast to grow to a value of £3.6bn. Statistics are yet to be collected and published to confi rm how accurate this estimate will be, although many believe that current trends could indicate an even larger fi gure.

However, despite the massive demand for non-surgical facial aesthetics, it remains a widely unregulated fi eld as materials used for treatments like dermal fi llers are not classifi ed as a ‘medicine’. The existing regulations were therefore not designed to encompass the changes seen in the cosmetic interventions industry, and many feel that this can put patients at risk.

The controversial subject was highlighted in the public media earlier this year, when healthcare professionals called for dermal fi llers to be provided on a prescription-only basis. While patients don’t ‘go under the knife’, the treatment is widely recognised as a medical procedure that requires adequate knowledge of the facial anatomy and refi ned skills to deliver safely and successfully. Many healthcare and indeed dental professionals were keen to raise their concerns

about such procedures being offered by those without medical training, the responding Government’s report went on to focus on three key areas:

• Regulating advertising and clamping down on irresponsible offers and competitions

• Reviewing patient complaint and redress processes

• Recommendations to improve and standardise training and supervision for practitioners

Designed to protect both the patient and the clinician delivering treatment, it is hoped the review will help to raise public awareness of the dangers and ensure protocols are in place to ensure the quality of procedures provided.

WHEN IT’S EFFECTIVE, IT’S LIFE-CHANGINGWhen performed competently and safely, non-surgical facial aesthetics can, however, have a massive effect on patients’ confi dence, self-esteem and quality of life. Whether patients seek treatment due to a previous illness or accident, or they simply wish to adjust some imperfections, these treatments can deliver the results they want in an effi cient and relatively cost-effective way. As the aforementioned statistics suggest, the less invasive options are also more widely sought than their surgical counterparts.

And as a dental professional, you are perfectly positioned to meet this demand in a safe and mutually benefi cial way. With the right training and experience you can become a competent provider of non-surgical facial aesthetics, offering treatment with confi dence. You will not only be able to offer the services your patients want in a secure and controlled environment, but you’ll also reap the rewards of increased patient satisfaction and enhanced referrals. What’s more,

Page 9: July Newspaper

9

patients who have undergone other procedures with your practice such as orthodontics or teeth whitening, are also more likely to extend their treatment with facial aesthetic procedures in order to achieve their overall desired fi nal results. This is therefore a great way of further boosting your profi ts, while also growing the business.

AT THE SHOWTo help meet this increasing demand on the profession, The Dentistry Show 2015 will host a brand new Facial Aesthetics education theatre on the exhibition fl oor. Whether you are interested in expanding your treatment offering to include facial aesthetics or you wish to develop and enhance your existing skills to provide a higher calibre or more advanced treatments, this will the perfect platform to do just this.

Leading professionals will deliver an inspiring two-day lecture-programme, designed to give you all the guidance and clinical advice you may need. Details will also be available on the various training courses you can attend to gain full qualifi cation and to advance your capabilities even further.

To inject confi dence into your patients’ lives, make sure you have the knowledge and skills to deliver safe and competent facial aesthetic treatments.

The full education programme will be available on the website from mid-September.
