Recipe

Berry Banana Bread adapted from The King Arthur Flour Baker’s

Companion

2 large eggs, room temperature

1 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1-1/4 cup mashed banana (2-3 very ripe bananas)

1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3/4 teaspoon almond extract

2-2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 cup yogurt – strawberry (or other berry)

flavored

1/2 – 3/4 cup fresh or frozen raspberries,

blueberries, and/or blackberries, in smallish

pieces

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

-In a medium-sized bowl, beat together the eggs,

sugar, and oil. Blend in the mashed banana, vanilla,

and almond extract. Stir in the cinnamon and nutmeg.

Whisk together.

-In a small mixing bowl, sift the flour, baking soda,

baking powder, and salt. Add to the banana mixture.

-Mix gently but thoroughly, then fold in the yogurt,

just until combined. Fold in the berries.

-Pour the batter into a well-greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

Bake the bread for about 55-60 minutes, or until a

cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. If

the bread begins to brown too quickly, tent it with foil

after 45 minutes in the oven.

-When the bread tests done, remove it from the oven

and place on a cooling rack; after 15 minutes, remove

the bread from its pan and place back on the rack to

finish cooling. Slice when it has cooled completely.

-Store at room temperature in a bread bag or airtight

container for up to 4-5 days.

Ki’su’k kyukyit! Summer is finally upon us despite some chilly mornings and evenings. Strawberries are ripening,

asparagus is done and the rest of the summer fruits now have a chance to ripen. Yaqan Nukiy School has completed

another school year and for our children and grandchildren who attend public schools, an early summer holiday due to the

strike throughout the province. Families will now spend their weekends camping, traveling, and of course, the pow-wow

trail.

This is my report for the period from April to June:

Chief and Council Meetings: There was no meeting on the 1st due to no quorum. But I attended the meetings that were

held on the 15th and 29

th;

April 2nd

: The KKCFSS Board held their monthly meeting. The Action Items were reviewed and some items were tabled

for the May meeting. Policies, some of which were HR were reviewed. Some were approved and others are still in draft

form.

5th: Participated in the Treaty Update that was held at the KNGB in Cranbrook. There was representation from all the

communities.

7th: The Lower Kootenay Band Community meeting was held at the Gym at 1 pm. Audits for the 2013-14 were reviewed

by Don Simpson from BDO. He worked with the Director of Finance for LKB. Housing Co-Ordinator gave an update.

He predicts a five year period to get out of arrears. Repayment plans have been made with those who are in arrears. He

will be contacting the FN Health Authority about safety issues for dwellings that are deemed to be contaminated. An

update was given on the Land Referendum. It was proposed that a day be scheduled at the complex with all key players.

Perhaps a visit to the property that is along the lake towards the ferry. Comments were shared by members including

planning for the future, policies, etc. Members put their names forward to be the working group.

30th: participated in the Cross-cultural workshop that was held in the gym. RCMP, border officials, community members,

and non-community members were well informed in that lots of questions arose. These workshops can only enhance

relationships between service providers, law enforcers and citizens. Awareness alone simplifies in getting the job done

through the art of understanding customary practices.

May 7th: attended the KKCFSS Board meeting. Old Business included review of Action Items; Case Management Model

Practice; and Elders in Residence position. The Assistant Deputy Minister for Service Delivery met with the Board. Signs

of Safety was discussed at length and compared with the SDM which is structured decision making practices. This year,

the Child and Family AGM will be held at Aqam on July 23rd

. The new Executive Director will begin delegation training.

9

th: The Strategic Planning for KKCFS was held at the Heritage Inn. Chief and Council from the communities

participated in this session. Key areas: Looking back 10 years; video of “Family is the Governing Unit; “Policy”

statements – Leadership Business Models; Directives (interior); Nightrunner; and what worked well?. Terry Murphy,

from Australia talked about Signs of Safety and how this empowers families. Closing comments included respect and

listening go a long way, understand where communities come from and understood victimhood (generation to generation).

13th: attended the Chief and Council meeting.

14th: The Lands and Resources had their meeting. Some of the highlights: Elk Valley Conservation Lands; Governance

Transition (KNC); Lafrance Creek Incremental Treaty Agreement; Columbia Lake East Side update; Mica 5-6 IMBA; and

South Selkirk Caribou and Wolf Cull.

21st: KKCFSS Strategic Planning was held at the Heritage Inn. Each band formed groups to identify issues and

solutions. Social Sector Director spoke on the concerns when children in care age out, primarily those who have mental

health issues and the costs attached to this. This concern will be addressed at the KNEC meeting.

22nd

: KNEC meeting was held at Akisqnuk. Finance Report was presented followed by the appointment of Auditor.

Updates on Lafrance Creek and Wensley Bench were given. The recruitment process for the CAO was given by HR. A

briefing note was presented on the Economic Summit.

26th: participated in Clara’s Big Ride which was held at the Gym. I was very honored to be present when Clara arrived

and to hear her story. I was able to relate when she spoke about growing up with mental illness in her family.

27th: attended the Chief and Council meeting.

June 1st: LKB community meeting was held at noon. Agenda items included membership transfer; Custom Election

Regulations; Band Council Orientation; and Housing Insurance. At this meeting, a decision was made to have the

accordingly.

KKCFSS, RDCK and the Town of Creston.

10th: attended the Chief and Council meeting.

11th: attended the TKL Elders’ Advisory meeting held at Aqam. The book “Not So Long Ago” is still being worked on

for accuracy in the contents. Family members of those who told their stories are being contacted. A review of the list of

speakers, writers and readers of the Ktunaxa language was updated. School District 8 is still waiting for the revised

Indigenous Peoples of the West Kootenay so that this can be utilized in the schools. Elders will be sent copies so that they

can review and make comments.

23rd

: attended the Economic Summit meeting held at the KNGB. Overview for the day was followed by background.

Brake out sessions took place to do a SWOT analysis. An example of a FN Development Corporation was used that

included structure, position within the community, protocols, corporate charter, planning framework and current

challenges.

24th: attended the Chief and Council meeting which is also the last one until the Fall.

This concludes my report for this period.

Ktunaxa Round House at Yaqan Nukiy

As we are all aware our culture, language, & spirituality, has been on the verge of being lost forever. Through careful

consultation with esteemed elders, the LKB leadership team has made it a priority to construct a Ktunaxa Round House. The

Round House will serve many purposes and will offer an appropriate venue to host rites of

passage ceremonies, black tail dances, medicine dance, lodge ceremonies, & feasts.

The Lower Kootenay Band began this process with no startup funds but with great determination

and after four years we finally made progress. We had a series of presentations with various

potential funders but the two main interested parties who believed in this project were Teck

Resources & Columbia Basin Trust. Teck made a financial contribution of $250,000.00 &

Columbia Basin Trust has contributed matching funds. The Lower Kootenay Band Development

Corporation will also contribute comparable funds to the project.

Aside from this being a preservation strategy of our culture this initiative will also provide some short term employment during

the construction phase for our community members. The location of the Round House will be north of the LKB ball field using

the existing trees as a buffer for privacy. We have contracted Mandalla Homes from Nelson who specialize in Pre Constructed

Round Buildings to design and build the Round House. We will also utilize local contractors for various phases of this project.

The only other Round House in the Ktunaxa Nation is located in Dayton MT. The ceremonies hosted there, like all ceremonies,

are of great importance to our citizens. However, the driving time can be up to 6 hours (one way) and during inclement weather

this can be difficult for our older family members.

The Yaqan Nukiy Round House will be made available to all of our Nations citizens, however, the majority of use will

be from member communities north of the border.

This project was not done in haste or on a whim, we have received guidance both spiritually & financially to make this

viable. We wish to "re-teach" the use of the Round House to all Nation citizens who are interested in learning & to those

who wish to work aggressively toward preservation of our aboriginal identity.

Please stand by for further developments or contact any member of LKB Council or Curtis Wullum for details on this

project.
