At dermalogica®, we believe professional skin care is not a luxury. To us, skin care is part of daily health — like brushing your teeth. That’s why we believe so much in the power of professional skin therapists to change how people value and care for their skin. It is also why we have fully implemented the dermalogica® concept of microZone® treatments into our business, and we especially rely on it to increase our client base and sales revenue throughout the summer months.

Page 11: July IWS 2014

A microZone® treatment is a 20-minute targeted treatment solution for today’s time compressed or budget conscious client. It can address zone specific issues such as the eye area, breakouts or congestion; or treat the whole face if necessary with exfoliation, hydration or soothing. We offer these treatments at dermalogica® at various store locations for only $30, and they truly are the ultimate quick fix for troubled skin. During a microZone® treatment, a dermalogica® skin expert will use professional grade products to treat each individual’s skin condition and target their specific skin issues for instant results. We recommend for our clients to receive a professional microZone® treatment at least on a monthly basis. These monthly express treatments in conjunction with the client’s prescribed dermalogica® home care regimen deliver real skin care results they just can’t get on their own.

The majority of consumers now are seeking shorter, more cost effective services and even more so in the summer than any other time. Your clients’ children are out of school and they are busy taking them from activity to activity and probably have a family trip or two booked. MicroZone® treatments quickly and effectively meet all of your clients’ skin care needs head on. They are the perfect solution to continue treating your clients’ skin in between their busy summer schedule.

What else can adding targeted treatments onto your spa menu do to benefit your business? Gain new clients, increase services, and generate higher sales revenue just to name a few. You will also have the ability to see more clients in a day, and it will increase client retention.

The average retail transaction at the dermalogica® concept store in Scottsdale, Ariz. without a service is $89, but when the client has received a dermalogica microZone® treatment, our average

transaction increases to $289. Also, 82% of people that receive a microZone® treatment will purchase product after their service and then will return within one month to purchase additional products. MicroZone® treatments create loyalty, and clients return on average two times per month. They are also great to incorporate into your summer marketing calendar and utilize during any of your business’ summer events and promotions.

How to Choose A PLASTIC SURGEON

by Dr. Jason Altman

Page 13: July IWS 2014

How to Choose A PLASTIC SURGEON

THE WORLD of advertising and public relations has brought physicians' names to the public on a continuing basis. Ten years ago if a doctor called himself a cosmetic surgeon, the patient knew precisely what that term meant. Recently, doctors in various sub-specialties such as dermatologists, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, and even dentists are performing cosmetic surgery procedures. This can leave prospective patients utterly confused about how to find the best and most qualified surgeons. “But how,” wonders Dr. Jason Altman, board certified Florida plastic surgeon and medical director of the Plastic Surgery Institute of Miami, “is a prospective patient to know who is a diligent, excellent, caring physician and who is a charlatan?” Dr. Altman wants to disseminate information the public can use and heed as caution when selecting a cosmetic surgeon in a country now brimming with doctors who call themselves “cosmetic surgeons.”

1. A physician needs to be licensed in medicine -- which means earning a recognized medical degree -- and can hang out a shingle in any specialty he or she chooses; the state does not control what area of medicine is practiced or which type of specialist he or she say they are unless there are complaints.

2. A physician should have and be willing to provide evidence that he or she has trained in the area of their expertise. For example, patients want to locate a plastic surgeon that trained in plastic surgery, which means a post-surgical residency fellowship in the sub-specialty. Each residency or fellowship program gives a certificate certifying the dates of service, as well as the hospital and department in which the physician trained. Physicians are usually quite proud of their achievements and keep these and many other framed diplomas in their offices. If they are not available, then at least a curriculum vitae or a brochure describing a doctor's training should be available and should be carefully examined by the patient him or herself.

3. After training in their chosen field, each medical or surgical sub-specialty has a certifying board that is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS). After spending the requisite number of years training, a physician has to take

an examination in order to be certified. After being certified, a surgeon often applies to the American College of Surgeons for a fellowship. These credentials can be checked in libraries and hospital libraries, where there is a Directory of American Medical Specialists that lists all physicians and the various specialties as well as a number of local physician directories, which provide the same information.

4. The American Board of Plastic Surgeons, Inc., is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the ABMS. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not approved by the American Board of Medical Specialists, and neither are a host of other so-called 'boards’. A gynecologist, ENT or general surgeon may be an exquisitely trained physician--but if they did cosmetic surgery, where did they learn to do it? Was it on-the-job training, or a correspondence course? How often do they go for a refresher course? Are they affiliated with a certified hospital in case of emergency?

5. Don’t be impressed by a P.C. after the physician's name--it only means that they are incorporated.

by Dr. Jason Altman

Page 14: July IWS 2014

Miami Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jason I. Altman attended medical school at The State University of New York, where he again graduated at the top of his class. He was then accepted into a residency at world-renowned Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where he served as Chief Resident before moving to South Florida to complete his training. He then served as Chief Resident in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery and was honored with an invitation to become the Jerome P. Webster Fellow with Interplast, an honor given to only one plastic surgeon in the entire country. Dr. Altman spent the year traveling across the world performing free surgery on children in developing countries and training local surgeons on the latest techniques in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He went on to become one of the founders of The Plastic Surgery Institute of Miami.

Jane Doe, M.D., F.A.C.S., on the other hand, actually tells one something about the qualifications of the physician.

6. If patients are still confused, check a third area: a physician’s associations and affiliations. If a physician is on the staff at a well-respected local teaching hospital in the department that is appropriate to their qualifications, then patients at least know that his or her qualifications have been appropriately researched by the hospital’s committees and should therefore be valid and current. A well-qualified physician--especially a surgeon--should maintain a relationship with a hospital just in case there is a problem with a patient that requires hospitalization. When a physician is outside of an institutional setting, there is no quality control or peer review other than what the physician sets for him or herself.

7. Finally, how does the physician approach and deal with you? You don't have to like your surgeon as a friend, but do you think he/she has you, the patient at heart as his first consideration? It is important that the physician spend time with a patient and explain the goals of his or her care -- the alternatives, risks and possible complications. Were you given an opportunity to ask questions and have them answered to your satisfaction, or were you just rushed out of the office?

8. Patients must look into many areas of a physician's training, especially certification, association, and personality prior to allowing a medical professional to manage their health care. If you do your homework well, you should end up with a compassionate, well-trained competent physician with whom you feel totally at ease and in whom you have the utmost confidence.

N at u r a l Lo o k i n g M a k eu p: 7 Tips & Tricks

from Rebecca Spera

Page 17: July IWS 2014

from Rebecca Spera

1. LESS IS MORE. Makeup is meant to disguise our few imperfections and enhance our best features - not cover them up - so if makeup isn’t helping make the real YOU more beautiful, “less is more” probably applies. 2. DON’T OVERDO IT. First, there’s a self-esteem drawback to wearing too much makeup. When we overdo application, we get used to that image of ourselves. Makeup almost becomes a mask. Second, wearing too much makeup can make us look older - NOT younger! Too much product can set into fine lines and wrinkles and look heavy, making those areas appear more defined. Last, too

much makeup isn’t good for our skin. It can clog pores and lead to breakouts that are more difficult to treat when constantly covered. 3. LET YOU SHINE THROUGH. I think people prefer less makeup rather than a full face of it because less makeup let’s our real beauty shine through. It’s more natural and approach-

able when it’s not camouflaging too much. 4. DON’T COVER EVERY FEATURE. If we decide to build on every feature, it’s a sign we’re wearing too much makeup. For example, a dark eye, dark lip, lots of blush, contouring and full face of foundation is way too much. Spend time applying and defining makeup to the eyes or the lips but not both. Also, if we are wearing a thick full-coverage coat of foundation from forehead to neck and then covered with a lot of powder, it is too much for everyday. Finally, wearing too much eye makeup all the time is another sign. 5. MAKE SMALL CHANGES. First, try substitutions. Perhaps try a light coverage foundation or BB or CC Cream instead of full coverage foundation. For concealer, try a lighter hand and just dab the prod-uct into the areas that absolutely need it. For eyes, take the number of products you currently use, and reduce it to no more than four--that includes mascara! The best part - not only will it look fabulous, but you’ll save time! 6. LIGHTEN UP. Leave the dark and colorful shadows and bright and bold lip colors at home

when you head to the office, ladies! An office look, for most career genres, should be more nat-ural. Go for light to medium neutral shades for the eyes and choose a lip color a few shades

darker than your lips. You can, of course, lean towards pink, coral, and even red, but keep it toned down for work.

7. LOSE THE HEAVY HAND. Work on just adding foundation to the center of the face (t-zone area) and brushing it outward, rather than applying it all over.

Use a dabbing motion and start with just one pump, then add from there. Next, lighten up the eyes. Start removing the darker shades and

any heavy eyeliner, especially for the bottom lash line. Also, choose only one shimmer color for eye makeup. Try

a tinted gloss instead of lots of lip product for a more natural look.

Wearing too much makeup can make us look older - NOT younger!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is quickly gaining wide popularity as a skin and hair moisturizer because it is packed with many of the essential nutrients required for healthy skin and hair. When preparing a new formula to put on your hair, one important thing to remember is that one single formula will not work optimally for all people.

Because of this rule, several of the recipe ingredients are listed in a range of measurements. If you try this recipe and you like it, but wish it were a little different, change it and try it again. This is one of the primary advantages over a product that you purchase off of the shelf. When you buy a retail beauty product, you are buying whatever the manufacturer wants to put in it. When you create a formula at home, you

are in complete control of each ingredient. Just be patient as you develop the best formula for you. It may take a few tries, but the final result will be well worth the wait. You may also want to increase or decrease the proportions of this recipe, depending on the amount of hair you plan to cover.

If you like to keep things simple, just use 100% pure, organic, virgin coconut oil. But, if you enjoy spending a little time in the kitchen, try the following easy, moisturizing DIY hair care recipe.

This recipe is recommended for: hair restoration, deep hair conditioning, split end treatment and hair taming. Dry hair will love it and so will hair during cold and winter months when the weather can beat it up and work away the shine.

HairMask Made

Simple

Page 20: July IWS 2014

The longer this recipe can be left in the hair, the better. If you take time to put it into your hair, try to leave it in for at least one or two hours. If you are able to leave it in over night, do that instead. When leaving this formula in your hair (especially overnight), it is recommended that your hair be put up, above your head and into a protective cover, such as a plastic bag or shower cap. You may also want to drape an old towel across the back of your shoulders, depending on what you are wearing when you do this. These two suggestions will help keep your clothes and pillows from getting stained by the oil.

Page 21: July IWS 2014

UTENSILS NEEDED: • One whisk (electric or manual and hand held) • One medium sized bowl

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: • Pure Coconut Oil: 1.5 - 2 cups (softened) • Eggs: 2 whole ...or, just 2 yolks (with egg whites removed) • Honey: about 2 tablespoons • Essential Oil (optional): add several drops

DIRECTIONS: • Thoroughly mix everything in a bowl with a whisk. Expect this process to take approximately 5 minutes. • An electric blender is not preferred. The blades may heat up, over-liquefying the coconut oil, which typically melts at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. It will be easiest to make this recipe when the coconut oil is semi-solid. • If mixing is too difficult, place everything in the microwave for a short period of time. Time length will vary dependent upon the condition of the coconut oil when you first put it into the microwave. Remember to allow it to remain semi-solid. • If your mixture becomes too runny, simply place it in the refrigerator. Coconut oil returns to a solid at temperatures below 75 degrees Fahrenheit. • Massage the coconut oil mixture into your scalp, completely covering it. • Take extra time to coat the ends of your hair. • Make sure to completely cover all hair. This process is sometimes made easier by working on your hair in separate sections. Each section may be tied or put up when it is covered with oil, and it may stay in sections until the oil is rinsed out. • If your hair is not already up, put it up and cover it. • Finish this process by rinsing out your hair in the shower. • For best results, repeat this process one time each week.

ANTI-AGING Dentistry by Dr. Kourosh Maddahi

Page 24: July IWS 2014

In his new book, Anti-Aging Dentistry, Beverly Hills celebrity cosmetic dentist Dr. Kourosh Maddahi explains how facial features that cause us to look old are actually caused by an aging smile. Dr. Maddahi has developed some

simple anti-aging dental procedures that instantly fix a flawed smile, completely transforming the entire bottom third of the face’s structure—removing wrinkles, fixing the jaw line, and making patients look decades younger, all without surgery or general anesthesia.

“When I graduated from USC Dental School in 1987, my goal was to be the best cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills. After some years of practicing in the 90210 zip code, I started to realize there were some holes in cosmetic dentistry that no one seemed to have answers for. It wasn’t enough for me to just make someone’s teeth whiter and straighter, and unfortunately this is about where the field stops. I knew there was more I could do for my patients. There had to be ways to give them smiles that were not just straight and white, but were structurally sound and, most of all, age-defying.

On top of that, I was convinced that the technology being used needed a huge thrust into the future to make these procedures both fast and virtually painless. The dental world needed a facelift (pun intended).

Did you know that common signs of aging such as deep wrinkles, sagging skin, and changes to your jaw line are actually easily correctable oral health issues?

Page 25: July IWS 2014

Dr. Maddahi has built a reputation as one of the most trusted names in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. After graduating with honors from UCLA in 1983, he went on to complete his dental degree at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and, in 1987, opened his dental office in Beverly Hills. Now, more than 25 years and 8,000 patients later, Dr. Maddahi remains at the forefront of his field. His groundbreaking work has been featured on top television programs, such as Extreme Makeover, Oprah, 10 Years Younger, ABC News, CBS News, and he has frequently been consulted for his expertise on various network news programs, such as KABC News, KTLA Morning News, and FOX’s Good Day L.A.

5 Ways Veneers and Crowns Can Change a Smile

1. Provide support to the lips and cheeks

2. Reshape teeth to compliment one’s face shape

3. Open up a collapsed bite

4. Correct discoloration

5. Straighten crooked teeth

In this book, I intend to explain what can be done in dentistry to reverse years of wear and tear, not just in someone’s mouth but also to the entire bottom 1/3 of the face. This approach to dentistry is so far beyond what is being done in the field that “cosmetic dentistry” as a term no longer seemed to fit, and so Anti-Aging Dentistry was born, which is exactly what it sounds like, dentistry that reverses or stops age.

The way this is done is through the use of porcelain veneers and crowns. These have been the backbone of cosmetic dentistry as well, but with Anti-Aging Dentistry they are being utilized in a completely unique and revolutionary way.

Typically, when one needs a veneer or a crown, a dentist will shave down the tooth and adhere porcelain in the

exact height and width that the tooth was previously. They might change the shape of it a bit, but that’s about it. This has been accepted as the only way to really use veneers and crowns for years. However, they can do much more than this, and in this book I will reveal everything they can do.

My first discovery was in 1992. I had the idea that porcelain veneers and crowns could be used to straighten teeth… It took a lot of convincing for me to finally get a lab technician that I thought could do a good job to construct the pieces the way I wanted them. I was going to be shaving down more of the tooth than was generally accepted as workable, so that I could put on crowns and veneers that were straighter than the original teeth were.

This was the first step in pushing

the boundaries on what veneers and crowns could do, and it’s been evolving ever since. We’ve now discovered that we can use these pieces to give someone support in the lower 1/3 of the face where it had been missing, thus giving someone a complete lift and peeling many years from their face.In short, this is a new and exciting way to approach Anti-Aging. It’s long lasting, it’s virtually pain free, and there’s no recovery time. I have seen patients who have felt they were never going to be able to smile, beam. I have seen wrinkles that were deemed impossible to get rid of, vanish and watched 20 years fall off of someone’s face in just a week. Anti-Aging Dentistry is filling the holes I’d spotted so many years ago, and I’m happy to say the world of dentistry will never be the same.”

amenZONE Workout

At-Home

from Amen Iseghohi

Page 29: July IWS 2014

When he was eight years old, Amen Iseghohi’s parents moved him and his sister from Europe to West Africa to live with their grandmother and experience their African culture and traditions firsthand. Amen found that a lot of his fun centered around one significant item, an old tire, which his grandmother taught him was a great symbol of life and to stay alive you have to keep moving. She also ingrained in him that movement is required for progress in life and that to be successful, you need keep moving forward. It was this inspiration that motivated him to create AMENZONE Fitness, a back-to-the-basics primal approach where you’ll find no weights, machines or even mirrors. The workouts are centered around a tire, and participants are pushed both mentally and physically.

Workoutfrom Amen Iseghohi

At Amenzone, all workouts are concluded with an inspirational message. Here’s one for your workout:

“As with anything in life, success requires consistency and dedication.” - Amen Iseghohi

DO THESE 3 TIRE EXERCISES AFTER STRETCHING.

Don’t worry about the number of “reps” you can do; this routine is time-based and should be repeated 3 times. Please ensure you are warmed up and have water close by for hydration as needed.

1. Step-Ups (Lower body & cardio)

For a minimum of 1 minute for beginners; 2 minutes for a regularly active person; and 3 minutes for the very athletic.

Alternate from your left to right foot touching the top of the tire whilst hopping. This is also a great way to warm up and deceivingly taxing if you are not breathing correctly. Exhale as you exert energy and avoid tightening up.

2. Push-Ups On Tire (Upper body & core)

For 15, 30 or 45 seconds depending on your fitness level.

Form is important. Avoid dipping the mid-section; keep a straight plank-like posture.

3. Explosive Knee Tucks (Core)

1, 2, or 3 minutes depending on fitness level.

Assume a position similar to push-ups with hands on tire but feet together. This is your starting position. Then, tuck both knees in as close to the tire as possible between both arms. Go right back to the starting position continuously.

VACATIONHEALTHY

H a b i tsby Laurie Gould

It’s summertime, and the living is easy… Life slows down, and we are ready to breathe a little deeper, take time to really smell those roses, and simply chill. Vacations are on the horizon and we are giddy and starry-eyed with anticipation.

Of course we know to lather on the sunscreen repetitiously and to hydrate, hydrate and hydrate some more. So all that is left is packing some fun summer dresses, strappy sandals, and a bathing suit. OMG, did I just say bathing suit??

Okay, let’s take a step back, breathe in and out for a count of 10 and relax. We have been living cleanly, exercising and taking care of our skin. We have learned to embrace who we are, stand tall and smile. We have been walking the walk and now have a way of life that makes us feel and look good. So, why worry?

Vacations are often a time to just let it all hang out! There is nothing wrong with that, BUT there are also some simple ways to enjoy all the pleasures of leaving reality behind while still “sticking with your program”.

Page 32: July IWS 2014

Pack some exercise clothes and a pair of sneakers for long walks on the beach, boardwalk or a hike in the mountains--wherever you choose to go there will be activities to do. Take advantage of what the outdoors has to offer. Maybe go biking, swimming, canoeing, or kayaking – do anything and everything. It will rejuvenate you and keep your body moving and your mind clear.

Try the local fruits and vegetables that are fresh and juicy. Often there will be farmers markets that are fun to walk around in and taste the local specialties. You will find snacking on those delectables will give you the energy you need and put a lightness in your step.

If you are able to do some of your own cooking, use those fresh ingredients and be the goddess of invention. Experiment with some new recipes and create your own. It is so much fun throwing things together with a few spices and seasonings until something delicious sits before you. Use a colorful cloth napkin to evoke the feeling of dining at a 5-star restaurant, even though you are sitting in your loungewear with a glass of wine. How fun is that?!

Of course, splurging is something we all look forward to, but we can do it in moderation or with substitution. I, for one, do love those cold sweets, but am perfectly happy having frozen yogurt or sorbet instead of ice cream--a few less calories and the taste is still yummy.

This is the time to reinvigorate and harmonize your body and soul. Have a good book on hand, some games to play, and allow yourself to try new things or simply just be!

So whether you are going on a faraway vacation or a staycation (turn off the phone, lock the doors and shut the shades), remember to nurture and be nurtured, to laugh and release those endorphins, and to continue making and enjoying the small life changes that embrace who you are.

LEA CAPPELLI is no stranger to the life of a musician. This 19-year-old singer/songwriter has performed privately for Muhammad Ali and has shared the stage with Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers, Katherine McPhee and Grammy Award winner India.Arie. In between recording sessions with Timbaland and European sensation Fink, we caught up with her to find out about her personal style and what skincare and makeup products she can’t hit the road without.

DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.

I have always been fascinated by the dichotomy between ugly and beautiful. Where does one start and the other begin? I’ve never considered myself very fashionable or girly, and through that I’ve discovered a darker style that fits my personality. It’s inspired by high-fashion, grunge, vintage, and those certain elements of beauty mixed with darker, more entrancing tones.

DO YOU FOLLOW SEASONAL FASHION TRENDS? WHAT BRANDS DO YOU LOVE?

I’m afraid I don’t follow seasonal trends too often, as I’m usually following musicians instead. One brand that I do love is Alexander McQueen. I remember the first time I walked into his store in New York--I was floored by the details in the gowns and shoes. At that time the theme was honeycombs, which was the common thread that held all of the clothing pieces together. It was fantastic and incredibly creative.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

Definitely a sturdy pair of shoes. I have a pair of DSquared black boots with steel toes that I’ve worn for years. It makes any piece I wear have an interesting edge.

WHAT IS YOUR DAILY SKINCARE ROUTINE? WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE RELIGIOUSLY?

At night I use Purity facial cleanser with my Clarisonic, and then I use a brand of skincare called EstheCeuticals. There are three bottles: Nytamin, Fractional, and Skin Seal. I apply all three in that order and then use my

Origins Spot Remover for any acne I may have. Then I use a small tube of Cherry Blossom L’Occitane hand cream because I have a bad habit of chewing on my fingers!

ARE THERE ANY MAKEUP BRANDS/PRODUCTS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

I jumped on the makeup train a bit late. I never wore makeup in school, and I hated applying it when I had performances. I now have a few quality products that I use to give myself touch-ups, but I’m still fairly hopeless with my face. I do really love my Benefit “Brows a-go-go” kit. It has two brow highlighters, two shadows, and comes with black eyeliner and a set of tweezers. Aside from that, I like to use my Naked 2 eyeshadow palette, which I believe offers beautiful and subtle shades.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO STAY IN SHAPE?

I am grateful that both my mother and grandmother have always had fantastic metabolisms, and I have taken after the both of them. However, I was the girl in high school who was so lethargic that I would feel faint if I ran for more than five minutes. I realized that even though I loved my body, I needed to become healthier and stronger. I started training twice a week two months ago, and I can feel myself becoming more powerful.

DO YOU STICK TO A SPECIFIC DIET?

Does a steady diet of mashed potatoes and chocolate count? The only thing that I really look for when I purchase my food is whether or not it is GMO (genetically modified), as there have been very negative studies pertaining to the quality of the food. It is so worth it when you can read the label and know what you are putting into your body.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

One of the best experiences I’ve had was singing for Muhammad Ali at a private dinner party and another time when I sang at Jane Seymour’s Open Heart Foundation Gala. I met Beck, who saw me sing and told me to keep going. That was a special moment for me.

WHO HAVE YOU BEEN MOST EXCITED TO WORK WITH?

I am excited to work with anybody and everybody. I’ve found that people who are unknown are usually willing to be more creative and open-minded than bigger names, so I can never judge a session until it’s finished.

WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU?

I’m currently working on an album in both L.A. and New York, and when I come back to visit Arizona I can usually be found doing gigs at a great little coffee shop called Altitude in Scottsdale.
