The first thing that I think of when I hear the word summer is the sun. This magnificent star
that we revolve around is a source of illumination and life; and, yet, many of us try very hard to protect
ourselves from it in the most unreasonable ways possible. Dont get me wrong, UV overexposure is
certainly a concern, but we dont have to slather ourselves with toxic sunscreens to avoid overexposure
Most commercial sunscreens are filled with various chemicals that have never been evaluated for
safety and are actually toxic and/or carcinogenic. By using these unsafe sunscreens that have been
NATUROPATHIC

sadly approved by authorities not only are we preventing our bodies from producing vitamin D, but we are also
introducing nasty chemicals into our systems.
The best way to protect yourself is to build your inner protection and use safe photoprotectants that are
found in nature instead of using chemical-laden sunscreens that do more harm than good to us and the environment
Take good care of yourselves, be informed, and have a wonderful rest of the summer!

Hashimotos Thyroiditis(HT) is the most common cause ofhypothyroidism. It is an autoimmunecondition where antibodies attackthe thyroid, causing hypothyroidism.
The symptoms and disease of HTare thought to be caused entirely bylower levels of circulating thyroidhormones. As such, the standardtreatment is supplementing withlevo-thyroxine, or the commonpharmaceutical drug Synthroid,
which acts as a replacement forthyroid hormones.
This study followed womenundergoing thyroid surgery andmeasured their antithyroperoxidaseantibody levels, thyroid hormonelevels, and symptoms. Those with elevated antithyroperoxidaseantibodies likely had HT and this wasconfirmed histologically. The women
included had normal levels of thyroid
hormones. The investigators foundthat the mean number of reported
symptoms was significantly higher inpatients with higher antibody levels.Chronic fatigue, dry hair, chronicirritability, chronic nervousness, ahistory of breast cancer and early
miscarriage, and lower quality of lifelevels were significantly associated with a level of higher antibodies. The investigators used the cut-offof 121.0IU/mL for a high level ofantibodies. This study shows that hypothyroidism
is only a contributing factor tothe development of associated
symptoms in HT. Treatment of HTshould include the replacement ofthyroid hormones, but the real causeof HT is autoimmunity. If we wantto remain true to our naturopathicprinciples, we should treat the cause.Selenium supplementation is a naturaltreatment that has been shown to
decrease antibody levels. A deficiency
in selenium can also contribute to thedevelopment of HT, meaning that

WORDS OF WISDOMSelected by Anne Hussain, Student
We have a body, over which we rule as lord and master...It is the first empire over which we can have dominion; it is the
first nation we can govern; it is the first form of leadership we
are able to bestow beyond the leadership of our own minds. We
have no right to try to conquer others till we have conquered
the flesh. We must accomplish in ourselves the leadership thatwe expect to bestow upon others. If we want to see a better
world, we must begin with the self. in very many cases, the
beginning of a better world is a healthy body.
- Manly P Hall
It is of course always easier and pleasanter to let others
think for us... But if people wish to pursue a course that will
certainly lead them to true health, to the springs of life, each must be
his own doctor. - Adolf Just
We could say that meditation doesnt have a reason odoesnt have a purpose. In this respect its unlike almost all othe
things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When w
make music we dont do it in order to reach a certain point, such a
the end of a composition. If that were the purpose of music the
obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we ardancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floo
as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, a
when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly th
same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that th
point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.- Alan Watts
Nature never deceives us; it is we who deceive ourselves.

VIPASSANA: How to Become a Great
Naturopathic DoctorErica Robinson, Student
It was in my first semester at CCNMthat I heard the term, mentionedby Drs. Gowan and Montgomery.Vipassana, I searched it: To see thingsas they really are.
Vipassana is a universalremedy for universal ills: sufferingand misery. An art of living. A non-sectarian, non-religious, scientificform of meditation that people ofany belief system can partake in; andone that you should strongly consideron your journey to becoming aNaturopathic Doctor.
During the ten-day intro tothis technique, you live in completesilence without speaking, withoutusing any forms of technology orthe internet; you spend your timesegregated from the opposite sex.
You take on five precepts includingto abstain from killing, stealing, lying,
taking intoxicants, and engaging insexual activity. My friends, family, and fellow future NDs seem to getstuck on these details and think thatthis quest is too arduous for them.Friends, might I argue that life without Vipassana is in truth too arduous? We need to look inwards to find the
strength and determination to gothrough with a ten-day course of thisnature, and it will forever reward us.People ask, But didnt you drown inyour own thoughts? Doesnt yourmind race? How can you ever sitstill so long? I should mention thereare ten hours of meditation per day with at least four of those done in
the common meditation hall, andone 90-minute video discourse each
evening. And yes, your mind willrace: thats why youve come. Youvecome to learn to control your wildmind and learn Vipassana technique.
A wild mind, like a wild animal, isdangerous to society. A tame mind, like a tame animal, will serve all ofhumanity, including yourself.
The technique of Vipassana was used by Buddha to gain
Enlightenment and he broughtit to the people. Buddha offered Vipassana technique as a methodof working out ones own salvationin this lifetime, so that we may enjoypeace and harmony. Vipassana is nota Buddhist practice, it is universal andnon-sectarian.
Vipassana offers benefits tofuture NDs: a greater sense ofpresence and awareness, lessreactivity, improved listening skillsand a greater compassion and lovefor humanity. Vipassana may alsobe the ideal prescription for yourpatient: whether they have cancerchronic pain or disease, are nearing
death or have fears of death, sufferpsychosomatic illness or disease
connected to stress, Vipassana canhelp people stop suffering. While imay not necessarily alleviate physicasymptoms (but often does), it allowspeople to no longer respond to thesesymptoms or pain in a negative way
It allows them to feel their greaterpurpose, instead of being stuck ina state of depression, sadness, oranxiety.
To read more ab Vipassana, see my blog on thtopic: http://wholelifehealthca/2011/06/20/the-low-downdirty-deets-on-vipassana/
Or go to our local VipassanaCentres website; note the centre isonly an hours drive from CCNMhttp://www.dhamma.org/

Since I was a child I havealways, and will always, love cartoons. The reason I love cartoons, besidesall the colour and adorable talkinganimals, is that they have such simpleperfect messages. I recently watched
Kung Fu Panda during a studybreak last week. Although the storyline was completely unrealistic (yes,I know pandas do not practice theawesomeness of kung fu!), the moralwas pure genius you are who youare. To explain more eloquently, youare defined by how you act and live inthe present and not by what happened
in the past. Its such a simple message
that many would brush it off and notgive it a second thought. But thinkabout it how much do we live inthe past, dwelling on past issues, andhow much does that negatively affectour ability to live and grow? For
example, how many times have youwritten an exam and dwelled on theoutcome? How did that affect youphysically? Im guessing not well. Imnot suggesting that we should ignoreour past. Our past experiencesand struggles heavily influence ourpersonalities and present state. I saydont specifically dwell on the past and
let it govern your actions. Be present
in the present (another simple sayingalmost redundant, but if you thinkabout it for a minute it is a powerfustatement). Simplicity is beautifulEmbrace simplicity, embrace thepresent, and have a fantastic summe
everyone!

On May 27th, the CCNM Classof 2011 had their graduation at Uof Ts Convocation Hall to receivetheir ND diplomas. Two days earlier,
we enjoyed being out together
one last time at the graduationformal. This program challenged
all of us, and made us grow anddevelop into the naturopathicdoctors we are today. After goingthrough so much together and
becoming close friends, it was great
to share the accomplishment ofcompleting this program with each
other. Our class would once againlike to thank the CCNM faculty, administration, supervisors andstudent community for their support
throughout these past 4 years.
