Before too long,Lindseth, with the helpof his son-in-law in BC,found himself a 2005Harley Davidson specialFiremen edition motor-cycle, joined The RedKnights Alberta 1Chapter, and hit theroad.

Lindseth says the clubis not just for firemen, but that their familymembers are alsoallowed to participate asassociate members.

Lindseth participatedin the Red Knights’annual fundraising ridecalled The MotorcycleRide for Dad on June 9 inEdmonton, an annualevent to raise money forprostate cancer aware-ness and research.

The Ride for Dadencompasses 30 cities inCanada, with over100,000 riders involved, and has raised a total of$9,000,000 since 2000.

The Red Knights arevery particular when it

comes to the activities oftheir members, who arerequired to adhere to afairly strict set of guide-lines.

When it comes to thewearing of the colours,as an example, membersare allowed to wear theirRed Knights patches atnon-club events, butmust not do anything todiscredit the club whiledoing so.

That includes no abuseof alcoholic beverageswhile riding a motorcy-cle, and the official three

piece patch may not beworn on anything butthe back of the vest.

Some other interestingdos and don’ts thatmembers must adhere towhile wearing the offi-cial Red Knights patchinclude:

• Treating the Colourswith respect at all times;

• At no times shall theColours touch theground;

• Colours will neverbe yielded to a non-member.

Junior Achievement has great first year in Flagstaff County pilot projectSubmitted

The student entrepre-neurship program JuniorAchievement (JA) wasoffered in the local areafor the first time thiswinter, as a cooperativeproject between CentralHigh Sedgewick PublicSchool, (CHSPS) highschool and FlagstaffCounty.

Meeting on a weeklybasis for a period ofabout four months, the18 program participantslearned how to start acompany, manufactureand sell a product, thenliquidate.

The group chose to

offer “Chameleon Cups”for sale, a product with achameleon-shaped decalthat changes colour asthe cup heats up.

While sales werestrong, the group’s presi-dent, Tanner Skoretz, also admitted that therewere “production chal-lenges” with creating thedecals and quality con-trol was occasionally aconcern.

However, as organiz-ers of Junior Achieve-ment point out, part ofthe goal of the programis to teach young peoplehow to address chal-lenges when they arise.

Overall, the partici-

pants say their involve-ment with JuniorAchievement was funand educational, plusthey were able to receivecredits from their school, donate to charity, andmake a bit of money forthemselves.

The Junior Achieve-ment participantsincluded: TannerSkoretz, Logan Grove,Scott Storbakken,Dawson Bateman, CurtisSlavik, Bradley Link,Braden Bitzer, BryceBuelow, Curtis Miller,Derek Chevraux, DylanEskra, Jarod Zimmer,Jocelynn Ross-Wilke,Jorgen Klein, Raeghan

Schlaut, Justin Mandel,Torin Sheedy, and AliciaBergman.

Thanks to their prod-uct sales as well as a vol-unteer commitment thegroup undertook to raisemoney, the JuniorAchievement group wasable to donate $1,500 tothe family of EvanWallace, the Flagstaff girlwho has been undergo-ing cancer treatmentsover the last year.

Evan’s grandmotherand brother were onhand at the JA wrap-upevent to accept a chequeon behalf of the Wallacefamily.

In addition, each of the

17 participants was ableto turn their $10 share inthe company into areturn of $116. Not badfor four months ofinvestment!

Scott Storbakken wasalso one of only fournorthern Alberta stu-dents to receive a $1,500bursary to attend a NextGeneration LeadersJunior Achievement con-ference in Halifax.

It was presented by JAVice President JavierSalazar.

The students, who rep-resented the smallestparticipating communityin Alberta, were men-tored by business own-

ers and professionalsfrom within FlagstaffCounty who are lookingforward to runninganother program nextwinter.

As crops across theregion start to grow andanother hail season getsunder way, high com-modity prices and inputcosts are raising thestakes for farmers thisyear, says Chris Dyck, with AgricultureFinancial ServicesCorporation (AFSC),Alberta’s provincial cropinsurer.

“Hail is a threat everygrowing season inAlberta because we haveone of the highest inci-dences of hail in theworld.

“But when crop pricesand inputs like fertilizerand seed climb as high asthey are now, at well-above average levels, hailbecomes an even greaterconcern for farmersbecause they have somuch invested in theground,” says Dyck, sen-ior manager of businessrisk management opera-tions for AFSC.

The Crown corpora-tion provides the majori-ty of hail insurance tofarmers across Alberta onbehalf of the provincialgovernment.

“Now is when manyfarmers start thinkingabout hail because assoon as their cropsemerge from the soil, they’re vulnerable,” saysDyck.

He points out hail-storms in late-May andearly June have alreadytriggered several claimsunder the AFSC StraightHail program this springin southern Alberta.

Last year, the firstStraight Hail claim hap-pened on June 4 in thePeace region.

“Crops have an amaz-ing ability to reboundfrom early season haildamage,” says Dyck.

“However, those earlystorms do often result inreduced plant stands andyields. The later hailstrikes in the growingseason, the greater thedamage,” he adds,“because once plantshave podded or headedout, usually by mid-July,it’s too late for recovery.”

AFSC paid out justover $25.5 million lastyear on nearly 1,500Straight Hail claimsacross the province.

The most severe dam-age was caused by twomajor hailstorms, one inearly July that tore

through crops fromSundre to Red Deer, anda second one on July 18that cut a wide swaththrough fields fromMillet to Saskatchewan.Several smaller stormsalso peppered crops withhail in almost everyregion of the province.

“Last year was a goodexample of the fact thathail strikes everywherein Alberta, not just in thehighest risk area knownas Hail Alley that stretch-es from Calgary toEdmonton, along theHighway 2 corridor,”says Dyck, adding 2011was an average hail yearfor Alberta.

What kind of hail sea-son lies ahead this sum-mer is anybody’s guess,he says.

“If it’s wet and warm,we usually get more hail.If it’s dry, there’s general-ly less hail. But theweather can change soquickly, it’s impossible topredict,” he says, refer-ring to the dry conditionsexperienced in 2009.

“Parts of the provincedid end up getting mois-ture that summer, andwe had hail losses ofmore $30 million.”

Jonathan Hofer, whofarms 5,000 acres ofwheat, barley, and canolanorthwest of Killam nearHolden, says his cropshave been hit by hail fiveyears in a row.

“Last July was one ofthe worst storms I’veseen. The stones weregolf ball size, and thecrop was perfect,” saysHofer.

It wiped out 450 acresof his canola and wheat.

“As soon as I see thecanola coming up in Juneand the moisture looksgood, I put on hail cover-age. With our overheadcosts so high, we haveto.”

An increasing numberof farmers are electing totake out Straight Hailcoverage in April withtheir crop insurance, before their fields areeven planted, qualifyingthem for a two per centpremium discount, saysDyck.

“It’s an option westarted offering twoyears ago for producerswho want protection theinstant their seeds are inthe ground rather thanwaiting for their crops toemerge and risk earlyhail damage,” he says, explaining crops that suf-

fer more than 25 per centhail damage before beinginsured with StraightHail coverage becomeineligible for AFSC hailinsurance until the nextgrowing season.

“It’s a risk many farm-ers want to avoid,” saysDyck.

AFSC has been provid-ing hail insurance toAlberta farmers onbehalf of the provincialgovernment for morethan 70 years.

It all started when theprovince passed speciallegislation in 1938 creat-ing the Alberta HailInsurance Board.

The original hail pro-gram offered by the HailBoard still exists todayand is administered byAFSC.

“Until the Hail Boardwas established, therewere farmers in Albertawho didn’t have accessto hail insurance.

“That’s because privateinsurers weren’t able toprovide hail insurance inall areas of the provincedue to the high level ofrisk involved,” saysDyck.

“Hail is risky business, and our mandate as aprovincial insurer todayis the same as it was backthen, to provide hailinsurance to farmers inevery corner of theprovince, even in thehighest risk townships.”

Stakes are high for area farmers as hail season begins

LESLIE CHOLOWSKY PHOTO

Killam experienced a brief but intense rain storm with accompanying pea-sized hail on July 3, with no reportsof crop or building damage, perhaps due to the short duration of the downpour. Dark clouds plagued theregion last week, giving way to sunny skies and ultra-high temperatures, with calls for storms mid-week.
