The gem’s name comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ that translates to mean red.
Rubies are one of the hardest gemstones with a measurement of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

About Ruby This pink to blood-red gemstone is a
variety of the mineral corundum and the red colour occurs mainly from the amount of chromium present.
Ruby is one of the four precious stones including sapphire, emerald and diamond.
Rubies are considered a symbol of love and passion.

Locations of Ruby A lighter coloured ‘pink sapphire’ is
commonly found in Sri Lanka with newer ruby deposits discovered after the Second World War in:
Tanzania Madagascar Vietnam Nepal Tajikistan And portions of the United States
Rubies have also been found in Greenland, Macedonia, Kenya and Mozambique.
Folklore Points to the Ruby Ruby was called the ‘ratnaraj’ in
Sanskrit, which meant it was the king of all gemstones.
It was also called ‘ratnanayaka’ which meant ‘leader of precious stones’ and ‘padmaraga’ which meant ‘red as the lotus.’

Beliefs of Ruby The red hue of the ruby suggested to
many there was a fire that burned within the stone and it was because of this belief that lead to the myth that nothing would put out the flame, nor could it be hidden in any way, regardless of how it was wrapped or covered.
That belief extended to a fear that if the stone were tossed into water, it would transmit that fire burning from within and turns the body of water into a boiling mass.

Believes of Ruby It was believed to bring a life of peace and
harmony to whoever possessed a good quality gem. The owner would be protected against dangers and because the ruby warded off all evils, they would also be blessed with good health.
Another legend states that if a ruby was offered to the Hindu God Lord Krishna, they would be reborn an Emperor.
Rubies were also believed to enhance status and bring name, fame, virtue, vigor, warmth and amazing power to whoever wore them.
It was also believed that rubies would eliminate depression replacing it with courage and boldness.

Ruby in Burma Ruby was the favourite gem of Burma. They were believed to bring
invincibility to the wearer but in order to tap into that supernatural power wearing the gem was not enough.
The stone had to be inserted into the flesh in order to unlock this magically power.
Those who wore rubies inside their bodies in such a way believed they could not be harmed or killed by spear, sword or gun.
