“And suddenly from the heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind…”
- Acts 2:2
Shortly before Pentecost Sunday, my son Michael set out on a 44 foot sailboat to sail from Cabo,
Mexico, to San Diego, California. The day after he set sail, the National Hurricane Center reported
that Tropical Storm Adrian had become a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of 140 mph.
Hurricane Adrian was the first Pacific Hurricane of the 2011 season, and it was located 240 miles
southwest of Cabo, traveling in a northeasterly direction.
Fortunately, the storm quickly lost strength over the next 24 hours, and turned to the west, moving
away from the Mexican coast. However… my son reported that the first half of their trip included
20-25 foot swells and winds of 20+ knots. It was an interesting journey, to say the least!
When the Holy Spirit blew into the room where Jesus’ disciples were staying on that first Pentecost,
they, too, were quite surprised by the arrival, and the power, of a mighty wind. God’s presence, they
discovered, is not always benign and comforting. Sometimes it pushes us out of our comfort zones,
causes us to discover strengths and skills we didn’t realize we had, or even blows us “off course” to
experiences and places that we might not have chosen on our own.
The disciples could have shut the windows and the doors to block out the Spirit, but instead, like my
son, they chose to let the Spirit/wind fill their sails, and lead them on an adventure beyond their
wildest imaginings – read the book of Acts if you want to learn more about what happened!
In the Church Year, the season after Pentecost Sunday is known as Ordinary Time, but if we wel-
come God’s Spirit, it will be by no means ordinary! There may be no major festivals until Advent –
the word “ordinary” actually comes from the word “ordinal,” making Ordinary Time the “counted
time” after Pentecost – but… the wind of the Spirit has been loosed among us!
Raise your sails this summer and discover what God has in store for you! I can’t wait to hear your
stories!
Be God’s.

“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary dona-tions to the pantry. If a cash donation to the pantry is made, a wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are $30.00 and bulletin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculp-tures are also gladly accepted. The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedica-tion during this and the upcoming months. Please com-plete one of the special flower/bulletin envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your payment, and either put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office door. You should then sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate date. Thank you.
Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacra-
ment of Holy Communion at both
services on the first Sunday of each
month. Each time communion is
served, some of the bread and non-
alcoholic wine that has been conse-
crated at the altar will be saved in a traveling communion
kit, ready to go to the homes or hospital rooms of mem-
bers who were unable to be present, and would like to
receive the sacrament. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if
you, or someone you know, would appreciate “distance-
communing” with their Shenkel Church family!

Dear Shenkel Community,
I want to thank all of you for the wonderful
gifts you presented to me on my last Sunday at
Shenkel. As I write this, I am warmed by the
beautiful prayer shawl and memories of all of
you!
I pray that the future holds many blessings as you continue
and grow in the mission work you have undertaken in and for
your community.
Yours in Christ,
JoAnne McGee
FOR YOUR INFORMATION….
SHENKEL
QUILTERS
In the month of July, we will
meet on Tuesday the 12th and
26th at 9:30 in the Church So-
cial Hall. As always, we wel-
come anyone interested in learning the art of quilt-
ing. No experience is needed, just bring your scissors,
needle and thread and a willing heart.
We will not meet during the month of August..
Have a great summer!
Margie Allen
PAGE 5
Beginning on July 3rd, we will worship at 9:30 a.m. in the Grove, weather permitting. Summer worship is informal – lawn chairs and beach blankets are welcome!
Summer Peace Services
During the summer, our monthly Peace Service will move outside to the Grove, weather per-
mitting, and will continue to be held on the fourth Sunday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
If you’ve never attended this contemplative service of worship, plan to take a break from
your busy schedule and join us over the summer. There is plenty of time for quiet meditation
and prayer; the repetitive Taizé style chants and candle light (along with the bird songs and
wind rustling through the trees) help create a peaceful and reflective setting for worship.
Communion is offered to everyone at every Peace Service. Hope you can join us.
Parsonage Open House!
Fellowship time after worship on Sun-day, July 17, will take place at Shenkel’s
parsonage. Please stop down and enjoy some light refreshments, and take a tour
of a very special piece of Shenkel’s property!
Save the Date!
We will once again be hosting a community
inter- faith service on the first Sunday of Sep-
tember! The service will be held at 10 am on
September 4 in the Grove (weather permitting.)
FAMILY CAMP-OUT
Come join us for campfire snacks, games and late-night chatter at the Annual Camp-Out in the grove! When? Satur-day, July 9th beginning at 7pm. Bring your tents and sleeping gear, a breakfast item to share with friends and don't forget your church clothes for services in the morning!! Smores, drinks and snacks will be provided. Please contact Christine Durham or Julie Zachesky with any questions. We will see you there!!!
We thank Sheree
Scheler for her years of
service as our Service
Committee Chair, and
have reluctantly ac-
cepted her recent resignation. This
committee provides an opportunity for
families of our deceased members to
have fellowship on the day of their loved
one’s funeral. We are in need of some-
one to step up and fill Sheree’s shoes.
Sheree has been kind enough to provide
written and detailed information on how
to provide this important service. Can
you help? If you are interested in being
part of this much appreciated ministry,
please contact the church office.

Learned that Glen Hoff and Barry Miller have agreed to serve on a task force to review the proposals for
the stained-glass window restoration and make a proposal for funding – still need one additional person!

ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS….
SAVE-A-TAPE
PROGRAM
GREAT NEWS! We just received a check
from Redner’s for $222 as a result of the
register tapes you all brought into church.
Keep up the good work! Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at
the customer service spot at your local Redner’s store,
show your card at the register when you check out, then
bring your register tapes to church and deposit them in the
box in the Narthex. These tapes are collected routinely,
presented to the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage
of your total purchase to the church. Be careful to bring
your tapes in regularly instead of saving them at home, as
they do expire if not redeemed within a certain time period.
Also, please return the entire register tape. Redner’s will
not accept any register receipt that has any part of it re-
moved.

DO YOU HAVE NEWS FOR THE BULLETIN OR THE NEWSLETTER?
Just a reminder that all bulletin announcements should be at the church office by each Tuesday at
noon to be included in that week’s bulletin. Newsletter articles must be submitted by the 15th of
each month to be included in the next issue. Remember, this is a combined issue, so information
for the September Newsletter will be due by August 15th. Have a great summer!
. Thank you!

Recycling Reminder…. Please remember that we collect only aluminum cans here at the church for recycling. But please continue to recy-cle all your other recyclables at home.
SHENKEL LOVES TO GIVE….
REMEMBER TOO…. The Pottstown Cluster Food Bank
collection at Shenkel is the 1st Sun-
day of each month. Please place
your items in the large plastic bins
in the narthex.
AND...Please bring in your used cell phones and
empty ink cartridges and place them in the box
across from the nursery, or in the box located on the
coat rack shelf across from the office.
These cartridges are re-cycled to Sta-
ples, and the church receives credits
toward the purchase of office supplies.
The used cell phones are given to the po-
lice department to be distributed to abused
women.

CAN YOU GIVE A LITTLE TIME?
We are in need of a group of 3-5 people willing to
serve as co-superintendents for the Cemetery. This
is not a difficult job, especially when shared by a
group. It may prove to be very interesting for any-
one interested in the rich history associated with
Shenkel UCC.
CHURCH WOMEN UNITED INGATHERING
As in the past, new articles collected will be given to eleven local agencies in the Pottstown
area on October 3, 2011. Some of the nursing homes need craft items such as construction pa-
per, markers, glue sticks, paint brushes, quilting fabric, beads and jumbo puzzles. Also
needed are toiletries as toothpaste, tooth brushes, lotion (no perfume), shampoo, body wash
and conditioner.
Other items as sweat shirts, and pants, underwear, socks, gloves, wheel chair and walker bags
are always needed and appreciated.
During the summer you might find some of these items on sale and wish to contribute. Items will be collected in September.
BULLETIN BOARD….
COMMUNITY LUNCH
BUNCH
Another year has passed for the Com-munity Lunch Bunch. We have had lots
of good fellowship and good times, with 28-48 people attending each month.
We learned a lot from the electric company about how to best conserve energy and save money. We also learned about organic farming, the Johnstown flood, and was en-tertained by a bagpiper and enjoyed our annual auction. Guest speakers enlightened us on the life of Rosalyn Carter, taught us about chair yoga and nostalgic Christ-mases.
We had two projects this year that enabled us to donate $400 to the Pottstown Cluster.
Most enjoyed our food including our closing annual in-door picnic and games.
We will be back in September with more fun and sur-prises! As we start our 5th season, I hope you will make a point to come and enjoy our monthly get-togethers.

meet this summer on Thursday, July
21st and Thursday, August 18th at

which will provide each of us with
three beautiful cards. To insure there
will be enough materials prepared for
everyone, please call Ann Baccari at 610-323-5525, or
Connie Armbruster at 610-326-6516 if you plan to at-
tend. Come join the fun!

PHILLIES PHEVER…. COME ROOT FOR THE READING PHILS!
There’s still time to sign up for
our fun night at the Reading
Phillies. The date is Thursday,
August 4th - Fireworks, of
course! Tickets cost $9.00 each. Children able to
share your seat are free. 40 tickets have been re-
served. First come, first served! Look for the sign up
chart in the Narthex. Transportation by bus is pro-
vided, leaving the church at 5:15 PM. More informa-
tion will follow, or contact Ann Baccari.
Young at Heart
Supper Club
The first group ate out on Tues-
day, June 21 – were you there?
If not – you can still sign up!
Shenkel's Young at Heart Supper
Club will meet on the third
Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm, including on July 19 and
August 16.
Here's the way it works -- you submit, to the church office,
your name (or names if you'd like to be assigned with a part-
ner or spouse) AND the name of at least one restaurant you'd
enjoy dining at. The names and restaurant names are placed
in a box. On the Sunday before the third Tuesday, 5-7 names
will be drawn randomly, along with a restaurant name, and
posted in the narthex. Everyone who does not put a check
next to their name on that Sunday (indicating that they have
seen the assignment) will receive a phone call informing
them of the others in their group, and the name of the restau-
rant their group will be dining at. Everyone is responsible
for their own transportation to and from the restaurant (feel
free to arrange a carpool with someone else in your group!)
and for the cost of their own dinner.
ALL submitted names will be included in a group, and all
names will go back in the box and be re-shuffled and re-
assigned each month. New folks can join the “club” at any
time; if you have submitted your name as a “member” of the
“club,” please let the church office know if you will not be
available on any given month.
BETHANY CHILDREN’S HOME
COMMUNITY FESTIVAL &
148TH ANNIVERSARY DAY
CELEBRATION
On Friday, August 19, 2011, Beth-
any will host its Community Festi-
val & 147th Anniversary Day Cele-
bration and share its rich history of service to over 8,000
kids with the local community. A free event, Bethany will
provide live music in the afternoon by The Ringgold Band
and an evening concert by The Uptown Band. There will
be crafts, children’s games, a car show, food and much
more. The evening will conclude with an incredible fire-
works display. Bethany is asking for support, both finan-
cially and for volunteers to help at the festival. Please
see the flyer on the bulletin board in the social hall. Addi-
tional volunteer registration forms are available by call-
ing the church office.

STEWARD’S CORNER
I just learned about something called “GPS”???
The letters stand for Global Positioning System.
I found out that this is a piece of equipment
that you take with you in your car or truck, and
tell it where you want to go! Well, you don’t just
say it..you have to type in the address and town.
Then you just start driving, and this piece of amazing equipment
knows where you are all the time! And it tells you where to go….
“Turn right at the next intersection,” and so forth. Then, if you
don’t do what it told you to do, it says, “Recalculate” and it gives
you new instructions.
I was listening in one Sunday when the adult class was having fun
giving new meaning to “GPS.” “God’s Prayer Service,” “God’s Pro-
tection Saves,” “God’s Perfect Students,” and so on.
As I thought about this, I realized that we all do have a kind of
spiritual GPS. God does know where we are all the time and gives
us instruction to how to achieve our goals. If we “get off track,”
we need to “Recalculate.”
You can probably come up to more words to apply to “GPS”…..so
go ahead, “God’s People, Start!”
Love,
Steward
Tuesday Talking
“Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something, right here, right now, and anybody can
be a part of it. He encouraged his listeners to search, to question, to wrestle with the implications of
what he was saying and doing. He inspired, challenged, provoked, comforted, and invited people to
be open to God’s work in this world. Wherever he went, whatever he did, Jesus started discussions
about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is always inviting us to open our eyes and join in.
NOOMA is a series of short films that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus.” (excerpted from
Nooma.com)
You are invited to view these films and join the discussion on Tuesday evenings, July 12 - August 23, from 7 – 8 pm.
Weather (and bugs) permitting we’ll meet in the pavilion (otherwise, we’ll meet in the Social Hall), watch a 10 minute film
together, and spend the remainder of the hour discussing its implications for our lives as followers of
Jesus.
Come for one week, or every week – your spiritual life is sure to be stimulated by these thought-provoking evenings!
Speak with Dave Derman or Pastor Bonnie for more information.
Candlelight Labyrinth Walk and
Prayer Experience
If you are yearning for a time to
re-connect with God in a quiet
way in nature, you may want to
come to a Candlelight Walk and
Meditative Prayer Experience at
the Shenkel Labyrinth, following
the 7 PM Peace Service on Au-
gust 28. In addition to walking the labyrinth,
there will be a time of sharing among partici-
pants. The experience will be led by Rev.
Wanda D. Craner, Minister of Spiritual Nur-
ture, Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of
the United Church of Christ.

Healing Prayers We have healing prayers during the worship service on the
second Sunday of each month. It is our hope that you will use
this opportunity to participate. During the collection of the
offering, anyone who desires prayer for themselves or on be-
half of another is invited to go to come to the front of the
grove, where a prayer team will join you for prayer. A prayer
team will also be available in the grove at the conclusion of the
service. Healing prayers are also offered the third Thursday of
every month at 9:15 a.m. in the sanctu-
ary.
Anyone in need of prayers for them-
selves ,or on behalf of another, is welcome !

COME WORSHIP WITH US IN THE PICNIC GROVE Every Sunday morning at 9:30, weather permitting.
COOKIES FOR JOSIE
I started an online bake sale to help raise money for my neighbor’s daugh-
ter, Josie, who is waiting for a heart transplant at the age of 7! I wanted to
find a way to help Josie and her family, and since I love to bake, it was a perfect recipe! I’m doing what I love
and helping a fellow neighbor at the same time.
If you are interested in purchasing any cookies, brownies or other bake sale items, or know of anyone that
would, please check out my website at www.shelleyssweettreats.com. Please feel free to forward this to any of
your friends or family that you think would be interested in helping raise money for Josie and enjoying some
fresh homemade cookies and other sweet treats! I'll keep this going for as long as there is interest.
Thank you,
Shelley McKinley (Sheree Scheler’s daughter)
