As a little boy, my grandson, Austin, attended Wichita State University Child Development Center. As a toddler, he loved and adored his teacher, a student aide. Each morning he arrived at his classroom, Austin would peek in and ask, Wheres Yumi? Is Yumi here? If the answer was yes, he would smile and hurry in happily.

As a young man and Engineering major at WSU, Austin chose to take Japanese as his language elective. The first day of class, he walked in and the professor had a familiar face. Her name was Yumi!

This young woman, who provided a toddler with much affection and loving acceptance, shaped not only his young life but his very future. Austin will be traveling to Japan this summer to further study the Japanese language and Japanese culture. He plans to live and work in Japan when he graduates.

Never doubt that you, as a child care provider, leave deep and lasting footprints on the hearts of the children who come through your doors.

Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same.

Are you looking to help further your knowledge in the child care field? Here some opportunities we offer to help you out with just that!

The Step It Up project helps providers increase their awareness of the impact that wellness has on

children. We provide training events and resources to educate them on how to effectively implement the

areas of health, safety, nutrition and physical activity into their childcare programs throughout the project

year. Participants will receive professional development hours as well as an opportunity to receive a

grant or stipend during the course of his project. The project will begin July 1st. Please contact Tanya

Bulluck at 682-1853 ex 2280 for more information about the Step It Up project.

The Strengthening Families project is focused on providing providers with the tools they need

to communicate and develop stronger relationships. The project will offer support; share child

development information; supply parenting strategies; and provide parent engagement opportunities.

During the journey, parents will be invited to participate in parent gatherings (parent cafs) and asked

to partake in the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) process. Grants or stipends may be available to

    participants.

Please contact Renee Lingafelter at 316-682-1853 ext 2280 for more information.

The Quality Steps project promotes high quality, family centered care. The project will assist providers

in making changes in key areas of quality through focusing on quality, availability, child development

and professional development. Providers will have access to free professional development events,

developmental screening tools, and other important tools to help them support their children in the most

effective way. Grants or stipends may be available to participants.
