Dear Brothers and Sisters:It was an honor to be unani-

mously elected as the 28th State President of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts at the 99th Annual State Convention. The State Council has held its fi rst meeting and it was productive and positive. You have a great Council and we look forward to working with all our members in the fi lial lodges, our Benefi t Insurance Commission, and community partners.

This convention was a success and it was all about you, the members. There was a fraternity and a cohesion that permeated throughout. Please know that all of your comments, suggestions and input were heard.

I want to thank Immediate Past President James DiStefano for all of his hard work over the many years he has been on the State Council, and especially during his past four years as State President. He along with the Council moved this Order along. I look forward to his knowledge and guidance on the Council as we advance into this administration.

As the Grand Lodge prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary we are taking this opportunity to review and assess where we are as an organization. This is the

perfect time to look back at the past 100 years and celebrate how far we have come since the inception of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in 1914; a year when the largest immigration of Italians was coming to an end, World War I began, the Boston Braves won the World Series, and Woodrow Wilson was Presi-dent of the United States.

During this time the Order was founded to help the new immigrants integrate into the American way of life. As a community we have success-fully met that challenge. Our heritage is intertwined with the success of America, our ances-tors contributed to all aspects of life. As we continue to attain the highest positions in politics, education, business, popular culture, and other fi elds we im-part Italian-American cultural infl uence in American society.

Our mission now is to pre-serve Italian and Italian-Amer-ican culture, language, and heritage for future generations, continue to support our chari-table endeavors and scholar-ship program, ensure that Americans of Italian descent are fairly portrayed, and recognize achievements and contribu-tions as a community.

In order to address this mis-

sion the annual Bocce Tourna-ment will be held on Sunday, September 22th at the new Methuen Sons of Italy on their state-of-the-art indoor bocce courts. This is not an event to be missed.

Join us as we celebrate our culture on Saturday, Septem-ber 28th at the fabulous Italian American Heritage Month Din-ner. The food is always excel-lent with co-chairmen Florence Ferullo Kane and Tony Sestito coordinating. Come and enjoy great food, good music, and fraternity with your sisters and brothers in the Order. It’s a relaxed evening that you will enjoy.

The Columbus Day holiday will come next, and along with it the annual parade. Co-chair-men John Savastano and Larry Giordano are reviewing options to recommend in which parade we will participate. Keep Octo-ber 13th and 14th open to join in the celebration. What a way to kick off our 100th anniversary celebratory year than with a fl oat, a band and large contin-gency of members marching in the Columbus Day Parade!

Stay tuned for further information.

In our last issue of OSIA Comunita’s Knowledge Corner, Attorney Kathleen Lynch Moncata wrote about the world of Elder Law and the impor-tance that families should put on Elder Law issues. She provided us with guidelines for fi nding an Elder Law attorney. However, in this day and age of the vast information resources available to us via the Internet, many of us prefer to develop a broad understanding of the issues that might affect us before we retain the services of a specialist.

Attorney Moncata has taken the time to compile a list of useful websites that we can visit to learn more about Elder Care and the resources that are available to us. This is a valuable list of websites that Attorney Moncata has spent countless hours extracting from the hundreds of websites that offer information about Elder Care.

Readers can visit Attorney Moncata’s website at www.moncatalaw.com. There you can visit her list of useful websites by going to the “Resources” tab so that you will always have the latest information as she updates the list. Some of the links to the websites are very complex, so rather than print the links here we encourage

you to go to Attorney Moncata’s website so that you can click directly on the website links.MASSACHUSETTS ELDERS

Provides resources available to Massachusetts elders and their families. Of special in-terest is the Family Caregiver Handbook that you will fi nd on the website.U.S. DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS

The Long Term Care Guide provides information about long term care options — home and community based, and in residential settings. It also provides a “Shared Decision Making” approach to long term care decisions.MASSACHUSETTS NURSING HOME SURVEYS

THE CONVERSATION PROJECT

Dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care.

“Too many people are dying in a way they wouldn’t choose, and too many of their loved ones are left feeling bereaved, guilty, and uncertain. It’s time to transform our culture so we shift from not talking about dying to talking about it. It’s time to share the way we want to live at the end of our lives. And it’s time to communicate about the kind of care we want and don’t want for ourselves … The place for this to begin is at the kitchen table — not in the intensive care unit — with the people we love, before it’s too late.”WHO GETS GRANDMA’S PIE PLATE? ™

In coming months Attorney Moncata will be working with OSIA Comunita and the Ben-efi t Insurance Commission to deliver Elder Law workshops to OSIAMA members and their families.

JULY / AUGUST 2013 SONS OF ITALY NEWS PAGE 3

As members of the Sons of Italy, we pride ourselves on the many scholarships we give to deserving young students every year. There is something special about helping a young person. Many of us are now at a stage in life where we are thinking about the futures of our children and grandchildren, wondering what we can do to help them. We ask ourselves questions such as: • What can we do to help them get a head start on their fi nancial future? • How can we help them deal with money responsibly? • What can we do for them that will ensure their money grows over their lifetime, and provides some level of fi nancial security for their families? • How can we structure our gifts so that they have access to money for important life events such as their fi rst home down payment or college expenses without stripping their families of the fi nancial security they need?

While there are many options for providing fi nancial gifts, and hopefully some fi nancial wisdom to our chil-dren and grandchildren, one that is often overlooked is permanent life insurance. Though it is often over-looked, permanent life insurance may just be the single most important gift we can give to them. Here is why: 1. Permanent life insurance offers a lifetime of fi nancial security and ensures that the child will be able to maintain their insurance coverage no matter what their health status may be as they grow into adulthood. Some policies offer the advantage of allowing the insured to increase their coverage no matter what their health is. 2. The cash values of a permanent life insurance policy will grow tax deferred for the life of the child or as long as the policy is in force. 3. The child will have access to the growing cash value through policy loans without having to pay taxes or penalties on the withdrawn cash, as long as the insurance stays in force. Whether it is a fi rst car, a down payment on a fi rst home or a wedding, the cash is available to the child. No other fi nancial instrument offers this advantage. 4. The cash values may be used toward college expenses but will not be counted as assets for fi nancial aid evaluations (under current law), unlike the money they might have in a 529 plan or in custodial accounts and trusts.

A gift of permanent life insurance is relatively afford-able because premiums for children are substantially lower than those for an adult. And there is a great deal of fl exibility in structuring the premiums for a life insurance policy so that you can ensure the policy is completely paid up before it is transferred to your child or grandchild.

AN EXAMPLE OF THE “GIFT THAT LASTS A LIFETIME”In a recent situation we were asked to prepare an

illustration of a life insurance policy for a 15 year old child. The individual requesting the illustration asked to have the policy fully paid after ten years of premiums so that the policy could be transferred to the child upon reaching the age of 25 and no further premiums would have to be paid by the child. The individual request-ing this illustration indicated they would be willing to pay $2,000 a year for ten years. The results as shown below indicate just how powerful this life insurance “gift” would be for this young person:

As this illustration shows, by the age of 25, when this policy is transferred to the ownership of the child, the cash value is almost equal to the $20,000 in premiums that have been paid up to that point. The cash values continue to grow for the life of the child with no further premiums having to be paid. Just as importantly, this individual is covered for life with a signifi cant amount of life insurance no matter what their health might be.

As you can see from this illustration, for a relatively low investment this gift truly lasts a lifetime, and gets better with each passing year. Even the most conser-vative of the examples, the “Guaranteed” illustration, is a worthwhile gift, and it is highly likely that actual results will signifi cantly surpass the “Guaranteed” numbers. There are literally hundreds of possibilities of life insurance policies that can be customized to fi t your budget.

So, when you are wondering whether you should give your grandchild an iPhone or a new video game

for their birthday, give some thought to a permanent life insurance policy. They may not have as much fun with a life insurance policy, but they will grow ever more thankful the older they get.

MAKE SURE TO GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICEGifting strategies are complex and require the ex-

pertise of seasoned fi nancial advisors. There are other options for transferring assets to children and grand-children, such as outright gifts, 529 plans, custodial accounts, trusts, joint savings accounts, and others. The advantages and disadvantages of these strategies should be considered by your fi nancial advisor and any decision you make should be made in the context of your overall estate planning strategy. We do not recom-mend you go to your life insurance agent to purchase a policy until you have had a professional look at your overall situation.

Through the partnership that the Benefi t Insurance Commission has with Highland Financial Group, OSIAMA members have access to the fi nancial expertise necessary to make the correct gifting strategy decisions. There is no charge for a consultation. Contact the Benefi t Insurance Commission at 617-489-0196 if you would like to request a consultation.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE “GIFT THAT LASTS A LIFETIME”As a special service for OSIAMA members, the Benefi t

Insurance Commission and Highland Financial Group will send a representative to meet with any group of three or more individuals/couples who are interested in learning more about gifting strategies for their children or grandchildren. In these discussions you will learn about alternative gifting strategies, their advantages and disadvantages, and you will be given actual il-lustrations based on your situation (we will conduct a brief phone interview to get the relevant information for the illustrations). Any OSIAMA member who wants to host a small get-together (three to fi ve couples is ideal) in their home may request this service. Give some thought to having one of our representatives join you and your friends to lead a discussion on gifting strate-gies for your children or grandchildren (your friends do not have to be OSIAMA members to participate in these discussions). This consultation service is offered free of charge. Call the Benefi t Insurance Commission at 617-489-0196 if you want to learn more about this unique service.

Dinner was a rather excit-ing event; the servers were dressed in togas and paraded about the dining room chant-ing “Hail Caesar” as part of their regularly scheduled Italian

themed night. All in all it was the perfect touch to a day that most delegates spent at least fi ve hours traveling to the Villa Roma. Everyone was visiting hospitality rooms, catching up with friends, and later attending the entertainment provided by the Villa Roma.

Friday morning was the offi -cial opening of the 99th Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, according to ritualistic form. State First Vice President Carmelita Bello introduced and welcomed the Chairmen of Permanent Com-missions, Benefit Insurance Commission Officers, Grand Lodge Officers, and National Offi cers and visiting dignitar-ies, including Michael Polo, President of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut, Anthony Baratta

SAVASTANO was nominated by Richard Picone, and MARIE JACKSON was nominated by Florence Ferullo Kane (1 to be elected). Theresa Farina was nominated by Paul Russo but did not accept the nomination.

For the office of National Delegate - At-Large, ANTONIO SESTITO was nominated by Florence Ferullo Kane, and NORA DiRUZZA was nominated by Amy Caira (1 to be elected).

The fol lowing delegates were nominated for the State Arbitration Committee: Orazio DiMarca, Amy Caira, Gerri Cimino, Sylvia Pacetti- Poirier,

Phil Privitera Esq., Christine Boncore Sciaraffa, Angela Maraia, Lucinda Nolet, Loreto Pellegrini, Rick Picone, Dottie D’Onofrio, and Angelo Rossi (5 to be elected). The fi rst fi ve highest vote-getters would be the State Arbitrators, and the following five would be the Alternate Arbitrators.

At this point, State President James DiStefano welcomed the National Offi cers attending our Convention. It was noted that Candidates Night would be held that evening. Before break-ing for lunch, State President DiStefano implored delegates

assigned to the Committee on Budget and Finance, Commit-tee on Elections, Committee on Laws, and the President’s Cabi-net to please attend these meet-ings. After the meetings ended at 3:00 p.m., the remainder of the afternoon was open to the delegates for rest and relaxation until dinner and Candidates Night.

Elections Chairman Kevin Mercadante spelled out the rules and regulations for vot-ing on Saturday morning. He vigorously noted that elections would be closed promptly at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. After Candidates Night, del-egates and guests were free to visit hospitality rooms or attend the entertainment provided by Villa Roma.

At the President’s Meeting, David Covucci and a repre-sentative from the Highland Financial Group spoke about insurances that can help small businesses, professionals, and families. They will be holding workshops to further explain what they offer. All the informa-tion is kept confi dential, and they feel they have much to

offer us.Publ ic Relat ions

Chairman Dorothy Berlandi spoke for Or-ganization and Educa-tion Chairman Louis Floriani, and talked about the successful seminar offered earlier in the year to address the proper procedures and ritual for the In-stallation of Offi cers.

On the Public Rela-tions side, Sister Ber-landi noted that the Sons of Italy News is our vehicle for com-munication to all our members and that all lodges should partici-pate by sending ar-

ticles about their events to the Grand Lodge for publication.

Magazine Chairman and Edi-tor Pamela Donnaruma talked about how to send in articles and pictures, and noted that anyone who needed help sub-mitting these items could con-tact her office. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].

State Deputy Chairman Mary Cooper reiterated the need for deputies to make periodic reports (via forms provided to all deputies) back to the Grand Lodge, which helps the Grand Lodge provide assistance to Lodges where it is needed. She also noted that it is not neces-sary to attend every meeting, but at least one meeting per quarter.

Membership Chairman Anto-nio Sestito spoke on member-ship, noting that the Tewksbury Lodge # 2782, Winchester Men’s Lodge # 1580, and Methuen Lodge # 902 have all successful-ly increased their membership in recent months. He noted that National ran an incentive pro-gram to bring in new members, and the grand prize (a trip to

Italy) was awarded to Braintree Ladies Lodge # 1422 member Marie Rountree.

Many other topics were ad-dressed, such as membership At-Large. President-elect Car-melita Bello spoke on plans for the 100th Anniversary of the Grand Lodge, including a gala on October 4, 2014. Additional ideas were discussed like a pa-rade in the North End, how to encourage participation of the Junior Lodges, a St. Patrick Day Breakfast and reception, and logo design. It was noted that these events should appeal to and include participants out-side of our membership.

After the elections concluded on Saturday morning, the Con-vention reconvened at 9:30 a.m. State Recording Secretary Ron Hill read new announcements and Sister Barbara DeStefano gave her final report on the Credentials and Registration Committee, noting that 152 out of the 189 authorized del-egates were present, as well as 64 guests.

The Chairman of the Com-mittee on Laws, Philip Privitera Esq., reported on the recom-mendations of the committee on the proposals presented at this convention. The proposal made by State President James DiSte-fano regarding the elimination of the Senior Member status was sent to a study committee for further review. There was no time limit for the study commit-tee added to this proposal.

Proposal # 1, submitted by Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge # 2183, recommended that conventions be held in the ju-risdiction of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts (Massachu-setts, New Hampshire, Maine, or Vermont). The committee recommended acceptance of this proposal, but after much discussion, the delegation voted to reject their recommendation.

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge # 2183 also submitted Proposal #2, which recom-mended amending the term of offi ce for Lodge offi cers to one year, and Proposal #4, which would have amended the Rights and Duties of a Social Member to allow social members with 20 consecutive years of service to be recognized as regular mem-bers, with the right to vote and hold offi ce up to Trustee of the Lodge. The committee recom-mended rejection of these pro-posals, and the delegation ac-cepted their recommendation. Proposal # 3 was also submitted by the Wilmington Lodge, in regards to the election of State Delegates, but was withdrawn.

Proposal # 5, which recom-mended that a convention be held bi-annually instead of an-nually, and Proposal # 6, which recommended that Lodges be required the send their repre-sentatives only to an election year convention, were submit-ted by the ITAM Lodge # 564. The committee recommended rejection of the proposals and the delegation accepted their recommendations.

The Chairman of the Com-mittee on Budget and Finance, Arthur Bennett, presented its report. Brother Bennett noted that the budget as presented included a per capita increase of $2.48. He also noted that the

In a bowl, mix bread crumbs, chopped garlic and grated cheese. Add olive oil to slightly moisten the bread crumbs. Take one beef slice at a time. Spread some bread crumbs in the center of meat. Leave sides of meat about half-inch clear of bread crumbs. Gently roll from long end of meat, gradually folding in the sides so bread crumbs won’t fall out. Roll the meat to the end. Squeeze the rolled meat in your hands. Take white thread, and wrap around the roll and sides of meat to secure ends from opening.

Brown on all sides in a skillet before adding to your tomato sauce. Cook in sauce about 45 minutes. Before serving, remove Braccioli from sauce. Let stand in platter a minute before remov-ing thread. Then slice into 1/2-inch portions and serve separately or with cooked pasta.

Note: I learned to make Braccioli from watching my mother and mother-in-law. Patience and experience are needed but are well worth the effort.

In my childhood, I remember going to Moscardino’s Meat Market on Salem Street. The butcher cut the beef for Braccioli for the customer as we watched. Today, supermarkets have taken the place of personal butcher shops in many cities. We depend on fi nd-ing thinly cut beef steaks packaged and on display. Occasionally I have purchased a bottom of the round roast and carefully sliced thin steaks myself to make my Braccioli.

After a delicious Italian buffet catered by Rocco’s Restaurant, and served by members Cher-yl Caira, Julie Manos, Alicia Johnson, and Terri Woods, the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183 of Wilmington awarded several $1,000 scholarships at its June 19 meeting.

To begin the awards pro-gram, Trustee Lennie Malvone personally awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Gemma Fuller in memory of his late wife, Rose-mary. Gemma graduated from Woburn High School and will attend Endicott College to major in Nursing.

Scholarship Chairman Jen-nifer Bolanos continued the program by introducing six more students to the assem-bly: Rachel Yarid, Courtney Patterson, and Kirstin Alfonso, all graduates of Methuen High School; Mark Caira, a graduate of Shawsheen Valley Technical

High School; and Michelle Woods and David Caira, gradu-ates of Wilmington High School.

Rachel Yarid received the Wilmington Sons of Italy Memorial Award and will attend Westfield State University in the fall, with a major in Social Work. Courtney Patterson was the recipient of the Gerald Es-posito Memorial Award and will study Elementary Education at Fitchburg State. The Past Presi-dents’ Award was presented to Kirstin Alfonso, who will attend UMass Lowell, where she will major in Kinesiology. Mark Caira received the scholarship in honor of his grandmother and the founder of the lodge, Laura Caira. He will attend ITT Technical Institute and major in computer networking. Michelle Woods, the recipient of the Christopher S. DiCecca Memo-rial Award, will attend Wheelock College, with a major in Elemen-

tary Education. The Fr. Francis W. Mackin Memorial Award was presented to David Caira. David will attend the University of New Hampshire in the fall, with a major in Sociology.

After the students received their scholarships, they were initiated into the lodge as members.

This year, for the fi rst time, the Wilmington Lodge award-ed a $2,000 scholarship to a graduate student, Aldo Caira III. Aldo is pursuing a law degree at St. John’s College in New York. Wilmington Lodge members enrolled in graduate studies are encouraged to apply for these (one-time only) scholarships.

The offi cers and members of the lodge offer their congratu-lations and best wishes to the scholarship recipients and invite them to become as active in lodge activities as their col-lege schedules allow.

During the June 6, 2013 meet-ing of the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411, the members gathered to present seven grad-uates with scholarships, four of which are annually award-ed by the Lodge and three that were awarded as memo-rial scholarships by families in memory of lodge members who have passed in the last three years.

Fundraising events are planned throughout the year by the lodge and its members such as Wednesday pasta night dinners, porchetta dinners, and other social dances and festive occasions with the pro-ceeds used to award these scholarships.

The scholarship committee, comprised of lodge members, meets to review submitted applications for scholarships with recipients chosen based on grades and other criteria which identifi es them as stellar students.

The four recipients of the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 scholarships are : Michelle Rose of Ashland, Mi-chaela Rose Bliss of Bellingham, Thomas Ubaldino of Natick, and Alena Ubaldino of Natick.

Raffaela Fitzpatrick of Fram-ingham was awarded the Faus-tino Piccioli Memorial Scholar-ship, presented by Faustino’s wife Milly, his children, and his grandchildren. Faustino “Tino” Piccioli joined the Fran-cesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 in 1994, held many offi ces, includ-ing that of Financial Secretary for the Board of Directors for many years. He was an avid and skilled bocce player. Upon his passing, lodge members con-tributed towards the memorial

scholarship in his memory and his family will continue work-ing tirelessly to raise funds in order to annually award this scholarship.

Francis Cristofori, or “Friendly Fran, the Pasta Man,” and who passed on February 3, 2011, was the creator of the lodge’s Wednes-day pasta nights. He managed the pasta nights since their in-ception and when turning over management to Lodge brother Francis “Benny” Polagruto, Frannie continued to serve as host and greeter, often dancing with small children as the vol-unteer accordion player enter-tained the dinner guests. Fran-nie never allowed the serving of the meal to begin before the traditional ringing of his cher-ished brass dinner bell. Frannie was a long serving member and recipient of the Lion of the Year award. A scholarship recipient himself, Francis graduated from Northeastern University upon returning from serving as a pilot during WWII.

Nicole Perkins of Natick was presented the Anna Massa Memorial Scholarship by Anna’s husband, Robert Massa. Anna passed April 1, 2012. continued dedication. He con-tinued to say that throughout history, there are certain situa-tions that remind us that there is always hope, noting: “Hope prevails, it is good, it pulls us out of those dark places that we all go through … nothing is per-fect but hope raises us up many times.” Fr. Mazzone encouraged the members of the Lodge to continue the good work they do, continue to provide education opportunities to young people by offering scholarships, con-tinue to provide hope to those who are not as fortunate as we are. The Lodge has continued to

provide hope for 100 years, and others will continue to provide this hope for another 100 years!

Names of the year’s deceased members were read, as they were remembered and prayed for during the Mass. Those members are Elizabeth Mon-freda, Angeline Dabrowski, Louis Ventresca, and Harold Swindell. Following the Mass, Lodge members and guests gathered to celebrate and remi-nisce about events of the past and hopes for the future. Plans for a gala celebration for the Worcester Lodge #168 on Oc-tober 26 at Union Station were a popular topic of conversation.

A wonderful breakfast was

prepared by Maria & Mike’s Catering, including homemade muffi ns, eggs, bacon, sausage, orange juice, coffee, and fruit. The food was delicious, the ca-maraderie was great, and we are hopeful for the future!

We are all looking forward to the October 26, 2013 Gala Celebration of our 100th An-niversary, and hope that many people join us for the celebra-tion. Anyone wishing to join us should contact co-chairmen Rose Porcaro at 508-756-9114, Kevin Mercadante at 508-757-0050, or Maria Sciannameo at 508-842-7604.

We look forward to celebrating with you!

At 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013, the Honorable Mayor Linda M. Balzotti – in collaboration with Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 and the Italian American War Veterans Association – celebrated Italian Republic Day at Brockton City Hall. This marked the 152nd anniversary of when Italian citizens voted to replace the monarchy with a republic.

The event commenced with a welcome from Mayor Balzotti, followed by a short talk from the Italian American War Veterans Association Past National Commander George Cataldo. Next, Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 President Richard Alfonso gave an animated history of the events leading up to Italy’s change from a monarchy to a republic. Retired Navy Seal Offi cer, Plymouth County Commissioner, and Commander of the Brockton Italian American War Veterans Post Anthony O’Brien was the last speaker.

Due to inclement weather that day, the Italian Flag could not be raised, however Mayor Balzotti promised to raise it later in the week on a more pleasant day. All stood solemnly as the Italian Na-tional Anthem was played. The morning concluded with everyone enjoying camaraderie with hot coffee, Italian cookies, and delicious Italian rum cake served in the Brockton City Hall Rotunda.

Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Lodge #216 Immediate Past President Louis Tarantino, Vice President Jacque-lyn Bonarrigo, Orator Gloria Cesarini, and other Lodge Members. Other dignitaries included State Representatives Michael D. Brady and Claire Cronin, representing Brockton and Brockton/Easton respectively, and Brockton City Councilors Dennis Eaniri and Robert Sullivan.

On Sunday June 2, 2013 the Watertown Sons of Italy, Lodge Piave Fiume #1036, held the 1st Annual Boston Strong–Water-town Strong Bike Run, a mo-torcycle run to benefi t the 1st Responders Scholarship Fund, in honor of the fi rst respond-ers from the recent Boston Marathon tragedy. “When the horrible tragedy of the Boston Marathon occurred we knew we had to do something, then when things escalated to Wa-tertown we had no choice but to organize a fundraiser,” says organizer Michael DiStefano, a member of the Piave Fiume Lodge and a fellow rider.

Nearly 300 motorcycles par-ticipated in a ride from the Sons of Italy parking lot, through Watertown, Waltham, Weston, Acton, Concord, Lincoln, and returning to the Watertown Sons of Italy. In less than three weeks this incredible fundraiser was organized and publicized, largely due to Facebook and word of mouth through vari-ous supporters. This endeavor could not have been as suc-cessful as it was without help from Sheriff Peter Koutoujian and the Middlesex Sheriff’s Department, along with the Watertown, Waltham, Weston, Acton, Concord, and Lincoln Police Departments.

Riders from the American Le-gion Motorcycle Group (Joe Hill

Lodge, Waltham) led the ride and helped organize the route. Donations from local businesses supported this event, from busi-nesses including Watertown Ford, Trillennium Services, BJ’s Wholesale Club-Waltham, Penta Auto Body, Cheviot Cor-poration, Architectural Glazing Systems, Inc., Queen Screw Manufacturing, Inc. and Weiss Sheet Metal, Inc. The ride ended with a cookout and concert with music provided by two local bands, The Peacheaters and Live Bullet.
