TAMPA’S MOST EXPERIENCED RUNNING STORE STAFF
T his past month has been one of the hottest on record and it is not yet officially summer. As Florida runners
we need to be very aware of the higher temps and higher humidity. Anyone training for longer events knows that we become like vampires because we don’t like the sun coming up us since it drains our energy. If we continue to run or walk from spring into summer we will find that our bodies get acclimated to the heat and humidity. The best thing we can do is to prepare for the hotter weather and make adjustments to our training, equipment and nutrition.
Some adjustments to training could be running inside on a treadmill for a few miles and finishing your run outside. Running or walking in the woods is also a little cooler than running in the full sunlight. I recommend bug spray for woods running in the summer because flying insects can ruin an enjoyable experience. Another way to get those miles in, is to split a daily run into a shorter one in the morning and another one in the evening. The miles are cumulative and you will get the same benefit with less stress from the heat. One of the best ways to get in some extra running type training is aqua jogging in a pool. This activity will give you a good workout and it does not cause impact on your body.
The equipment for warmer weather running has only gotten better. There is a large selection of portable water belts and containers from Nathan, Amphipod and Fuel Belt. Boston Bill offers a great value for very good running sunglasses, which are a must for Florida activities. Products like Body Glide, a non-petroleum lubricant or Two Toms Blister Shield powder and roll on help eliminate chafing and blisters. The fabrics from such companies as Nike, Brooks, Asics and Saucony have gotten lighter and helps promote moisture management to keep you cooler. Sox from Balega, Feetures and Thorlo will help prevent blisters and keep you drier. Even though everyone perspires during summer running, these technical fabrics will make your body happier when you are moving.
Proper nutrition is not only critical for summer running, but it is critical for daily living. We are all a study in chemistry and should try several options to keep ourselves hydrated and energized for summer activities. Companies such as Gu, Cliff Bar, Huma and Salt Stick products offer everything from energy gels to powder to chewables. These items give our body both carbohydrates and electrolyte replacement to help us get through longer workouts. Water is also essential with any type of summer activity. We should stay hydrated all summer long.
As you run from spring to summer try some new things with your training, equipment and nutrition. This time of year is a good time for experimentation as those hot humid days become inevitable.

Morton’s Neuroma: Ball of Foot Pain The most common source of ball-of-foot pain is Morton’s Neuroma, an irritation of the nerves that run between
the long bones of the foot. If you experience a burning or tingling sensation in the front of your foot, especially when working out, you may have Morton’s Neuroma.
OVERVIEW
Join Club FITniche for just $30 and save $20 on ALL shoes for 2 years! Ask a crew member about additional benefits and details. This promotion excludes items of Brooks, Saucony, Asics and others which are subject to a unilateral minimum advertised price policy. Please check in-‐store or by phone to confirm actual prices of individual items we offer for sale to club members.
Morton’s Neuroma BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP
1. Be sure all your shoes fit very loosely across the knuckles (metatarsal heads).
2. Don’t wear high heels, as they load pressure on the front of the foot.
3. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach.
PURCHASES THAT SHOULD HELP
1. Wear supportive shoes that are a good bit wider across the knuckles than you’re used to and that are correct for your biomechanics. Lower heeled shoes may be helpful. Purchase from a specialty store, like FITniche, that can accurately assess your gait.
2. Wear metatarsal lifts, as they will spread the knuckles out, taking pressure off of the bones and the nerve shafts that run between them. They also shift some weight from the front of the foot to the rear.
A common source of burning or tingling in the front of the foot (most often between the 3rd and 4th knuckles) is Morton’s neuroma. Symptoms If you experience regular pain, burning or tingling near the front of the foot, especially between the 3rd and 4th knuckles from the big toe, you may have Morton’s Neuroma.
Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions within a couple weeks, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose conditions such as Morton’s Neuroma.

Does Stem Cell Therapy Work for Running Injuries?
The sound of the pavement underneath the rubber soles of your shoes is a soft, yet consistent pounding. The swish-swish of your windbreaker, beating of your heart, and inhale and exhale of your breathing combine together to create a sweet harmony with the rhythm booming in your ears from your favorite Pandora station. These are sounds that only a runner can understand. Your destination is still miles away and you’re glad. Running is your outlet. It’s the time of day that is all yours. Not your boss’s, not your husband’s, not your kid’s. It’s just you and the pavement – and usually your best friend who is content to just run along beside you for moral support. Except today she isn’t here because she has a running injury. As you stop at your destination to stretch and watch the sunset an advertisement comes on about stem cell therapy treatment. You wonder, does stem cell therapy work for running injuries? Whether running is your chosen form of exercise, you’re training for a marathon, or just part of a weekly running group, if you’re a runner out with an injury, you want it to heal fast. Stem cell treatment can help common running injuries by speeding healing twice as fast! Some of these common running injuries include:
Achilles tendon tears – caused by making a sudden movement that causes an abrupt tensing of the muscle. Like a sprinter who quickly starts a race.
Tears of the plantar fascia ligament – caused by too much pressure on your feet that damages or tears the ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot and supports your arch. Think of a marathon runner who wears shoes that don’t support the arch.
Damaged ligaments in the ankle joint – caused by not bearing weight properly, or an irregular walking pattern. Like a runner who suffers from over-pronation.
So, how does stem cell therapy work for these running injuries? Stem cells have the ability to develop into just about anything because they haven’t yet determined their role in the body. So, if you inject stem cells into a torn Achilles tendon, they will repair the tendon. If it’s new cartilage that you need, they will regenerate new cartilage. The injection is done using a minimally invasive technique, meaning it’s done by making a very small incision, is nearly painless, and doesn’t leave any scarring or cause any trauma to the patient. Most runners hate being out with an injury, which means stem cell treatment is an excellent option because the cells start to work immediately and speed up traditional healing times, allowing runners to get back to their daily route much quicker. So, does stem cell therapy work for runners? Yes! If you’d like to learn more, contact a New York podiatrist at Adler Footcare.

SUMMER RUNNING ESSENTIALSBy: Gene Ulishney, B.S. HPE, LMT, CPED, BOCPED
Now that our summer running and walking training is in full swing, I thought I’d touch on the gear that will help keep you more comfortable and your sport more enjoyable.
Hats, Visors and Headbands - A good mesh hat will offer coolness as well as good sun and eye protection. Preferred is a darker under-bill, which reflects less light towards the eyes. Be sure it has a nice absorbent or wicking headband to capture sweat before it runs down over your face.
A tighter woven polyester hat is best for runners who would like additional sun or rain protection. For the sun, this type of hat is best for those with thinning hair or shaved heads because the dense knit will allow less penetration of the sun’s rays. It will also help to keep your head drier by repelling the rain during those inevitable wet runs. Be sure it has some mesh ventilation panels for heat dispersion.
Visors are the coolest of this group, offering mainly eye protection from the glaring sun. Keep in mind, eye protection may be even more important as the fall and winter sun sinks lower and lower on the southern horizon. We not only have to be concerned about east and west exposure to our eyes, but all day southern exposure as well.
The only place for cotton in a runner’s bag is a headband. It’s sole purpose to keep that profuse sweat from rolling down over your forehead and burning your eyes. Once saturated your headband is easily removed for a good wring, and is again ready to go.
Sunglasses - With the extended amount of time many runners spend in the sun, the eye protection that sunglasses provide is extremely im-portant. They offer protection not only from direct sunlight, but also from every object around you that has the ability to reflect sunlight into your eyes. Don’t cut corners - be sure your lenses offer maximum UV protection as well as exceptional clarity and are distortion-free. If you just feel out of it, get dizzy or have a headache after wearing sunglasses, chances are distortion is causing your discomfort. Up until recently, you had to pay well over $100 to get distortion-free lenses. Today there are a couple of companies offering high-quality products down into the $60 price range. The basic difference in quality fabrication is that the best lenses are ground from the center out versus the simpler way from side to side as you’ll find in more inexpensive sunglasses.
Running Tops -- No cotton here. Synthetic materials such as polyester, or better yet, denier-gradient polyesters are a must. The latter not only wick, but they actually help pull sweat away from the body. Cooler and drier is the result. If you are worried about getting too much sun, it’s not hard to find running tops that offer a very good UPF (Universal Protection Factor) of 40+.
For women, properly-sized sports bras are essential. Well-designed sports bras that offer both compression and encapsulation will usually provide the best in comfort, support and performance.
Running Shorts - Synthetic fabrics with moisture-wicking liners are the only option. Better yet, find one having a waistband that is graded back to front. This means that the back is designed to sit higher than the front to better conform to the way the short actually rests on the waist. This should eliminate most chafing problems. If not, there are some running shorts with a longer short built into them that should virtually eliminate any chafing issue. If this still doesn’t work, find a good anti-friction stick or cream.
Running Socks -- A thin sock offers itself only as a foot covering with few redeeming qualities. A nicely padded synthetic sock offers foot comfort, protection and better performance. Acting like a gasket, the well-padded sock provides a better fit by filling in the excess gaps be-tween the foot and shoe as well as by padding areas where the shoe may irritate the foot. Blisters, corns, calluses, and other friction-based ir-ritations and discomforts can virtually be eliminated with a high quality, well-padded, synthetic sock. And, as long as your shoes fit properly, don’t worry about your feet feeling hot with additional padding. It’s a rare occurrence with the newest synthetic fibers.
Sunscreen - be sure your sunscreen offers both UVB and UVA protection. UVB rays are the skin burning type and UVA are the skin damag-ing rays. Sunburn is the body’s natural warning that it has had enough. In the past, it is believed that some sunscreen companies only paid attention to this UVB portion. They helped keep the sunburn down, but may have allowed an excessive amount of UVA rays into the skin. Because they were not burning, individuals opted to stay in the sun longer. This may be one of the reasons why life-long sunscreen enthusi-asts are coming down with skin cancer in record numbers.
Choose a sunscreen that is waterproof and with SPF-30 or higher rating, as well as one that won’t clog your pores and interfere with sweat production. Most companies will recommend applying sunscreen 20 minutes or so prior to going outdoors to allow it to absorb and activate. Your local running stores have the best options for most of the above. They are also the best-trained and most knowledgeable resource for your running and walking needs. Support them – they are in business to support you and your sport.

TIS THE SEASON, PRACTICE SAFE CYCLINGAs I write this, we are on the eve of another St. Anthony’s weekend of triathlons, expos, and fun. St. Anthony’s has now been in existence for more than thirty years, and is one of the venerable venues in the triathlon world. I hope many of you ex-perienced this year’s event, either through direct participation, as a volunteer, or as a spectator.
With the triathlon and cycling racing seasons underway, this means many of us are on the roads training our hearts out. Some of us have and use front and rear lights on our bikes. I submit we ALL should do so, and use them any time you are riding. Yes, that means during broad daylight, as well as in the dark. Many of you know I’m an attorney, and frequently represent athletes struck by cars while training. I believe that lights on your bike, especially in “strobe” fashion during the daytime, can save you from injury by an inattentive driver. Why should you have a light on the front of your bike? So the oncoming driver about to turn in front of you sees you and doesn’t make that potentially (to you) tragic mistake. The strobe light is distinctive, and makes you stand out from other distractions on the side of the road, including homes, businesses, billboards, etc. A light facing the rear, in strobe action, similarly makes you much more visible to oncoming texting or otherwise inattentive drivers.
Even when riding in the country, such as San Antonio on a weekend morning, having your front and rear strobe light operational can save you from grief and injury. An insurance adjuster who lives in that area told me that when driving those roads, cyclists often largely disappear when riding in the daytime when going into a shaded area. He has on more than one occasion nearly struck a cyclist because he didn’t see them because of the shaded area in which the cyclist was riding. He confirms with lights on, this problem disappears for him.
I know its hard enough to get some cyclists to wear a helmet; I know it will be harder to convince many of you using lights on your bike can be a benefit. You don’t want to look like a “dork,” I know. But you will be a live “dork,” not a dead or seriously injured cyclist; which would you prefer?
I use USB rechargeable lights; they are reasonably priced, easy to recharge, and extremely light, adding no appreciable weight or drag to your bike. The more you can do to be safe (lights, bright colored clothes, use of bike lanes where available, observing the law) the more likely you won’t become an accident statistic; or, if you are involved in a vehicle/bike accident, the easier your case will be to win because you will be giving me the ability to prove you did everything right! Please be safe, train hard, and never forget that this is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. See you on the roads.

The Aging Athlete Lynn Gray M.S., RRCA Run Coach
91-Year-Old Finishes San Diego Marathon Harriette Thompson ran 7:07
A new age-group best!
I woke up this morning with my muscles sore and my joints telling me that I may be getting a bit older for this type of impact sport that of distance walking and running. However, I woke up this morning, read the above, and felt mentally refreshed and motivated to start the day. It is reassuring I can still enjoy the running movement despite over 45 years of non-stop pitter patter on my feet and legs. Aging and the physiological results to our bodies can be complex, confusing, and in many cases discouraging. A better understanding and appreciation of running or walking can be had if we focus on the main aspects of what happens to our cardiovascular health and muscular development. With that mind, we can implement strategies to help “stay on the move” as we get chronologically older in age. This article will include untrained men, women, distance walkers, joggers, and competitive runners. Let’s discuss some questions from both a scientific aspect and professional observations of both doctors and myself whom treat and coach individuals who take part in distance walking, jogging, and running. Are there scientific studies which indicate older participants should put limits on both running and distance walking? Also, how about the aging athletes who want to continue to compete; do they lose their ability to consume, transport, and utilize large volumes of oxygen? Indeed, is the actual movement of jogging going to increase arthritis and joint stiffness? Scientifically, there is a decline in VO2, between the ages of 25 and 75 as studied by Sid Robinson in the late 1930s. By definition V02 is the maximal oxygen uptake or maximum volume of oxygen that can be utilized in one minute during maximal or exhaustive exercise. The ability to take in oxygen quickly and efficiently is almost cut in half from those 25 years old to those75 years of age. However, does this chronological decrease in uptake have to occur at that rate of speed for everyone? Not really. Since I was in my early 30s I ran about as fast till fifty years of age. My decrease came mostly due to less running, injury, and other outside factors; all of which would suggest less training at prior intensity. However, now that I have replicated most of my early training routine, I am slowly getting faster again. That result is still unfolding. Most competitive and endurance runners who remain in the game year after year lose little if they maintain their distance, intensity of training, and basically stay with their same training plan; albeit taking more recovery days. I personally see this with many runners whom I known for twenty or more years. What about if we add more distance to our training so we can increase our cardio output and heart volume? Can we in fact make ourselves more trainable as the years pass? It is true the younger we are we can still obtain improvements in maximal cardio output especially during long distance training seasons. The good news seems to be that even older men and women experience little change in maximal cardio output with long distance training, probably by removing more oxygen from the blood more efficiently. Us older folks can add to our stroke volume by going long; making our resting heart rate lower thus giving plenty of leeway before getting near our maximum heart rate. This may be one reason why older runners; such as myself actually take part in longer distance running and do quite well despite aging up. In fact one of the quickest growing sports to be taken up by older runners is found in what is called ultra-running – distance events of 50 miles or more. These individuals sustain a high level of cardio development, and many enter ultra-distance events – another great opportunity to compete in their age group again. The next reality is that we do lose muscle as we age; including our fast twitch muscles-recruitment of the quick up and down foot movement slows down. There is evidence that some muscle fibers may be lost as the individual ages beyond 60 years. (Aniasson, A) Famous runners such as Frank Shorter and Bill Rogers have written much about the importance of muscular training as they grew older. They would also mention that less frequency or the actual days of running is recommended to decrease injury and increase recovery. This would support the importance of beginning
83July/August flraceplace.com
cross-training by weight training as we hit the forty year old mark. Also, active impact participants should practice specificity training for the running muscles to keep a biomechanical advantage and yes, to keep the leg turnover from slowing down. An example of specific muscular training is hill repeats which build leg power, increase turnover, and is cardiovascular challenging. . In sum, as one ages up, both intensity and distance needs also to increase making us more “trainable” for various distance walk and run distance events. One might argue that those who at the very beginning are faster runners and have had prior training would have an advantage over untrained runners; be it men or women. This consideration would be applicable to great runners such as Joan Samuelson and Bill Rogers. According to Bengt Saltin and Gunnar Grimby studied “former athletes” who have kept up their training routine for more than 10 years still have a 20 percent advantage in V02 max compared to untrained non athletes and those of us who are average distance runners. Those of us who are “untrained” are advised to begin an aerobic routine of a steady, brisk walking movement, or a combination of walking and running; both of which will develop lung capacity. Oh, my achy knees. Is joint pain caused by impact sports as we age? If so perhaps we should give up this walking, jogging, and running. Not so. Walking or running can reduce the pain of arthritic knees by about 30 percent. In fact, increasing your speed be it walking or running when you’re older increases mobility. (Stephen Messler) My personal experience has been increased joint pain and tight muscles as I have aged up. I then began to change some of my training habits. I lessened running frequency to four days, implemented yoga and swimming, and began more running on soft ground. Controlling one’s training venue can alter the negative effects of increased arthritis from impact based on my experiences and other older adults whom I train. Further, adult runners aged 45 or older, had a lower incidence of knee osteoarthritis and hip replacement than age-matched walkers. Long distance running might have a protective effect against joint degeneration. (Gretchen Reynolds, NYTimes, 2014) Most importantly, many aging women have signs of osteopenia or have osteoporosis. Study after study reveals that running and similar high impact activities can prevent and hold off the progression of these bone density challenges. The bottom line. We have evidence that walking and running are favorable as we age up. But how much is enough before these benefits kick in? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity aerobic walking or running will improve your health. Or; if you are having time related issues, go for the intensity. 75 minutes a week of intense aerobic activity will help you gain even more health benefits. Note that aerobic activity can also include swimming, biking, and yes, dancing! The good news is now unfolding as us baby boomers are demanding movement such as found in the walk to run movement. We want to continue playing the game; and some of us play to win. So with our healthy heart, great lungs, and strong bones, you and I can very well increase our steps to a healthy life year after year.
