Dear friends The rain is washing against my study window heralding the arrival of a truly British summer! Not that I'm complaining, wilted plants are starting to look a little greener. With the arrival of summer come the thoughts of vacation. Time to relax, rest and perhaps catch up with family and friends. For many, life rushes past at an alarming rate. So much to fit into so little time and I'm not just talking of those who work; many of my retired friends seem to be even busier in retirement! We can so easily find ourselves with lives that are completely out of balance, replacing the joy God gives to us with tension and stress. What should a balanced life look like? What are the key ingredients that our God created minds and bodies crave? In the opening chapters of the Bible, in the story of creation, perhaps we find some clues. There is a balance that God strikes between creative work, contributing to the needs of others (six days straight) and complete rest (one day). With Adam and Eve, their initial life also involved time spent with God and the rest of the Bible gives ample example of the need for all of us to find regular time to pray and worship. When the Sunday Trading Act was passed in 1994, allowing more shops and businesses to open, our society changed. Suddenly a day which had been largely a national day of rest started to fill with work or chores. Many would say that the convenience of being able to shop on a Sunday has made life easier. Of course, the Internet now means we can shop all day and all night, if we so desire. This freedom can be very helpful but it can also add to the pressure of life. Unless we are ill, there is no time when we are forced to rest. Learning to strike the right balance between all these elements is a lifelong exercise, moving and shifting as our circumstances change. Whatever the circumstances of your life, I pray that you will find more of God's peace and joy this summer. Andy

COFFEE MORNINGS A lot of regulars were missing this month on June 15th; they were either on holiday or could not come for some other reason. However, the ten local people were augmented by four walkers who were very welcome and it was a noisy, cheerful gathering. Although the numbers were down we still managed to collect £36.00 for the British Red Cross. Julia has written these words as I was enjoying a holiday on the island of Islay – away from it all! A cheque has been sent to the local branch of the British Red Cross and I have asked if the money could be put towards the cost of a new Derbyshire emergency support vehicle which they are trying to purchase. A letter has been received from Christian Aid thanking everyone for our donation from last month’s coffee morning. They thank us for our continued support of their work with and for the poorest communities on earth. Future dates: July 20th, Aug. 17th, and Sept. 21st in the Village Hall between 10.30 am and 12 noon as usual. The charity to benefit from donations in July will be Hearing Dogs for deaf people and in August it will be for our local Community First Responders. Ros Hunt Derbyshire Churches and Chapels Preservation Trust (DCCPT) ‘Ride and Stride’ This annual national sponsored event will take place this year on Saturday September 10th. It would be wonderful if any of you would care to take part – whether on bikes or walking. Sponsorship forms will be available from the end of July and can be obtained from churchwardens. It would be great if refreshments could be provided in each church and even a rota of people to man the churches! However,

Page 11: JULY and AUGUST 2011 - WordPress.com

this is not always possible and is not obligatory, but it does make a big difference to those taking part. The Trust exists to provide grants for Churches and Chapels of all denominations in Derbyshire for their repair and maintenance. 50p out of every £1 raised comes back to the church you nominate. RH

Thorpe Village Hall - Annual Report – 28 April 2011

The Management Committee has consisted of Jim Hudson, David Froggatt, Bob

Evans, Barbara Wager, Cyril Challinor, Clarke Lomas and Andrew Wager during the

year since the last Annual Meeting on 11 June 2010. Andrew Wager has continued to

act as chairman and secretary, while Bob Evans has continued as treasurer. Jim

Hudson retired from the committee at the end 2010 because he no longer has a

connection with the village. Jim had completed his work to ensure that the title of the

Hall is on a sound legal base and the committee expressed their gratitude to Jim for

all his hard work.

Management Committee meetings were held on 11 June 2010 and 10 December 2010

Gill Frith has been the caretaker since 1992. The committee continues to be very

grateful for her work.

The title to the Hall and the side passage has been recorded with the Land Registry

thanks to Jim Hudson’s persistence. It is now in the custodianship of the Charity

Commissioners. The story of Jim’s work was summarised in the Parish Magazine for

February 2011.

In order to improve the Hall for the hard of hearing, Barbara Wager has organised the

installation of a hearing loop. This allows those with suitable hearing aids to hear

what is going on more clearly. There is a table microphone for meetings and a lapel

mike for speakers. The Parish Council provided 20% support of £283, the District

Council £700 and the Dovedale Dash £450.

Barbara has also organised the purchase of a smart nameplate for the front of the

Hall.

Work has started on a project to improve the toilets in the hall. They are long overdue

for an upgrade. The committee are working with an architect to find a design that will

replace the existing facilities with a disabled toilet and two modern unisex toilets.

Existing internal load bearing walls constrain the options but we are hopeful that an

affordable design can be achieved.

The committee are grateful for continuing financial support of £1000 from the

Dovedale Dash which allows hiring rates to be kept affordable.

There is now a website for the village hall at www.thorpevillagehall.org.uk

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

At Thorpe. Co-ordinator Barbara Wager

There have been no messages lately relating to new scams, However there

are scams about, mostly by phone and email. The telephone ones generally

ask for your bank or credit card details on some pretext or other, all of

which are always false. The police advice is simply never tell anyone your

details.

The email scams frequently say you have won money which you can claim

by giving your bank details. Another one is that your computer needs a

new security system, which it does not, anyway certainly not from

somebody you've never heard of.

The most recent case is one where a phone call says you need a new

security update, and giving a website address where you are informed that

it will cost £170 and please supply your credit card details. Surprise,

surprise. Please don't do it! If you do think you need a new security system

go out and buy one from a reputable source at a time of your choosing.

If you do get one of these phone calls or emails it is worth your time to tell

the police. If you don't they cannot know. If you do they can add together

everybody's information and perhaps detect a pattern and so be able to do

something about it.

A good way to stop unwanted phone calls is to register with the Telephone

Preference Service by calling 0845 0700707 or doing it online at

www.tpsonline.org.uk.

The police phone number for non-urgent calls is

Tissington Open Gardens Day

Sunday 7 August 2011 12-4pm

After some discussion we have come up with this date for the Open

Garden Day . I hope to see all those of you that have offered their gardens

so that we can discuss further details of the opening but, meanwhile, can

we all keep that date free in our dairies and perhaps think of a pricing

policy.

Tissington Hall Garden Open in aid of the National Gardens Scheme

The day this year for this excellent charity is Monday 29 August between

12 and 3pm The Hall itself will be open for guided tours that day in

addition.

District Council

for the Ward of Dovedale & Parwich. If anyone has a concern of anything

appertaining to District Council matters then please DO get in touch with

me.

As part of their programme, the District Council will be having a Southern

Area Forum at the Sports Centre in Ashbourne on Monday 4 July between

7 and 9pm where there will be various talks and an opportunity to ask

questions of the Council Members and Officers. Please do attend.

Tissington Youth Club We have started to meet up again! At the Village Hall Fridays 7.15p.m until 9p.m. Thankfully Steve Tame has come back on board to lead the club alongside two Sue’s; Sue Patterson and Sue Davenport. Their children attend the club. At the moment Friday is the evening for meeting, but we have found that there are children carrying out other pursuits on that night, so we may very well return back to a Thursday night if numbers stay low. Now that the evenings are light and hopefully dry, there is a great opportunity to use the Chill Out” area and the playing field in Tissington. If you have children 8years and over please come along to see us and join in the fun. Zena Penfold (Chairman) Tel. 01335 390674
