My Child Begs, Pleads& Demands...What should I do?

Rona Renner, RN

Q.  I have a 5-year-old daughter who wears me down when she wants something that I’ve said “no” to. She begs and pleads until I yell or give her what she wants. What can

I do to stay strong and not give into her demands? I think I’m becoming a real pushover parent.

A. How you discipline is often based on how your parents disciplined you, your culture, and your parenting style. Itʼs possible to discipline without yelling or giving in, but it takes practice and patience.

Here are some tips that might help:• Consider what sheʼs asking for before you say “no”. If you decide she canʼt have a second cookie, get down to her level and tell her, “No more cookies, but if youʼre hungry you can have some carrots and almond butter.” If she continues to plead you can either ignore her or ask her to leave the room until sheʼs done begging. If you give her the cookie after youʼve said no, youʼre reinforcing the idea that she doesnʼt have to listen to you.

• Be proactive and set limits before activities like TV watching or reading stories. Discuss the rules and have her repeat them back so youʼre sure she understands. “Iʼm happy to read you two stories, but after that Iʼll need to start dinner.” This will also help you be clear and not fall pray to her demands for more books.

• Encourage problem solving in a situation sheʼs not happy about. “Since youʼve had your 30 minutes on the computer, letʼs figure out what would be fun to do now.” If she gets angry you can ask her what the rule is, and repeat your offer to help her come up with an activity. If the cries continue, let her know you understand sheʼs disappointed or sad, but she needs to wait until tomorrow. If the yelling continues, you can tell her she will lose her computer privileges for the next day. You can also give her a hug or distract her by doing something else. Be empathetic but clear. Over time she will beg less.

The subject of fluoride can be a very confusing one, and the truth is, it is a very fine balance. Fluoride is used to harden tooth enamel, helping to ward off cavities. Cavities are caused by bacteria and food that are left on a tooth after eating. When this residue is not brushed away properly, acid collects on a tooth, softening its enamel until a hole – or cavity – forms. Regular use of fluoride toughens the enamel, making it harder for the acids to penetrate. However, too much fluoride at a young age can cause fluorosis, a condition damaging to tooth enamel. A few things to consider:

1.  Children under the age of 2 should use water or a training toothpaste when cleaning their teeth – hold off on a fluoridated toothpaste until advised by your dentist.

2.  Check on your waterʼs fluoridation level. While most communities do provide fluoridated water, there are some that do not. Seek advice from your dentist on fluoride supplements vs other water options in the event that you do live in a non-fluoridated community.

3.  While research is still pending for formula fed babies, consider mixing powdered formulas with water containing little or no fluoride – such as distilled water.

4.  When beginning to use a fluoridated toothpaste with your little ones, use only a small shmear. A little bit goes a long way!

TWO FULL SERVICE MEDICAL AND SURGICALCENTERS FOR PETS OF ALL AGES

by Tamara Borland V.M.D.

Summer is here! Itʼs time to get out with the family and your beloved pets to enjoy all those recreational activities youʼve been anxiously awaiting. Here are some reminders to keep your pets safe so your fun wonʼt be spoiled by any unexpected emergencies.

Being that you will be out and about with your pet more during these months, their exposure to other pets and pests will be increased. Go to your veterinarian before the season starts to update their vaccinations and get preventatives for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Heartworm is an example of a preventable disease which can be fatal if left untreated. Preventing disease avoids the stress and cost of treatment and can actually be life saving.

Itʼs important to limit and supervise time outdoors with the hot temperatures. Animals arenʼt as efficient at cooling themselves as we are (they cool through panting and the paws). Providing shade, cool, fresh water, not leaving pets unattended in cars, and avoiding heavy exercise are sure fire ways to prevent heatstroke. Taking your pet on early morning or late evening walks when the sun is less intense is always best. In addition, extra caution should be taken with brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs, boxers, boston terriers) who donʼt pant as efficiently. Signs of heatstroke include panting, rapid heartbeat, bright red gums and tongue, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and collapse. If you see any of these signs, try to first cool them down by hosing them with water, applying rubbing alcohol to their paw pads, and placing wet towels near less haired areas. Then, take them immediately to your veterinarian as this can be a life threatening condition.

Another concern is safety around water. Keep in mind that not all dogs can swim so swimming, especially the first time, should be under assistance and supervision. Be mindful of strong tides and of hot sand if going into the ocean because injury can be incurred to your petʼs feet. If going in the pool, make sure your pet knows where the stairs or ladder is to safely exit and that any covers are contained as pets can get trapped underneath. Lastly, make sure your pets are leashed to prevent injuries/accidents and are wearing some form of identification (tags, microchip) at all times.

Having these tips in mind, you and your pets will be safer, happier and able to enjoy those lovely summer months!

Dr. Tamara Borland earned her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. She is inspired by the ever-changing climate of veterinary medicine and enjoys ensuring that every patient receives the highest quality of care. Visit her at the new Antioch Veterinary Hospital, 5151 Deer Valley Road or 1432 W. Tenth Street. Visit

The weather has stabilized, school is over, and vacations are planned. This means your family will be spending more time outside and in the heat. Remembering a few safety measures can make the difference between fun in the sun and unwanted sunburns.

Sun is a great source of warmth, Vitamin D, and good karma, but with overexposure it can lead to burns, blisters, and pain. The younger the child, the thinner the skin and the easier it is to get a sunburn so ensure you are using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, or better yet 50. Before heading outdoors, apply a small amount on your childʼs leg to see if there is an allergic reaction to the brand. No sunscreen protects 100% and typically will only last for a few hours before it needs to be reapplied. If the skin is exposed to water including pool water, running through sprinklers, or swimming in a lake or ocean, it must be reapplied after contact. Reapplication of sunscreen is very important and the easiest task to forget.

It is best to keep infants out of direct, bright sunlight as they tend to burn more quickly (even with sunscreen in place). A burn can occur in partial shade, such as under a tree or patio cover. Even the reflection from pool water can intensify these harmful rays - eyelids and even the eyeballs can burn. Sunglasses may help shield the eyes of older children, but you may encounter some push-back if you attempt to put shades on your baby or toddler. Although they may look cute in photos, most babies and young children remove glasses off their faces quickly. Also know that all skin reacts differently and sunburns can occur in as little as a few minutes.

If a burn has occurred, place a cool, wet cloth on the affected area. Use sunburn lotion or aloe gel as a coolant and a cover-up, however, know these do not speed the healing process but simply act as a soother for the pain. If there are small blisters that have not ruptured, use your wet cloth and then apply the lotion after. If the color is deep red, there are many blisters, or the pain is very intense then see your source of medical care immediately. The areas of any burn should not be exposed to sunlight until the color of the skin is back to normal.

Skin cancer has an apparent relationship to the amount of damage the skin has suffered from sun exposure. Donʼt take unnecessary chances - make sure to have your sunscreen handy all summer!

As every parent knows, the arrival of summer means barbecues, playdates, weekend getaways, and summer brain drain! But, while statistics indicate that children can lose up to three months of learning over the summer, the good news is we have a solution.

FREE Summer Activities at Lakeshore Learning      Our friends at Lakeshore Learning Materials have done a great job of compiling free educational activities for three age ranges—preschool (ages 3-5), early learners (ages 5-8) and elementary (ages 9-11). Within each age range, activities are divided into the following categories: reading, writing, math, science and crafts. There are over 100 different activities on the website! Most of these easy-to - implement activities use common household items—and thereʼs always an emphasis on fun. Learning is In!School is Out...

Have your child help you collect several small objects from around the house. (objects that will not be damaged by water!) Next, fill your sink or a large bowl with water. Encourage your child to predict which of the objects will sink or float. As your child tests each object, ask her why she thinks each object sinks or floats. What similarities and differences does your child notice?

Use sidewalk chalk to draw a hopscotch court with 26 spaces. Beginning with the space nearest to the starting point, write one letter of the alphabet —  from A to Z — in each space. Take turns with your child rolling a small rock or pebble onto the court and hopping to the space on which it lands. Once your child has hopped to the space, encourage her to name three words that begin with the letter that is written in the space.

Bake your favorite cookies, allowing your child to help you measure the ingredients. Be sure to say the units of measurement and use math words like “more” and “less.” Once the dough is mixed, cut cookies in a variety of shapes — including triangles, squares, circles and more. Discuss what each shape looks like. How many sides and corners do they have? When the cookies are done baking, have your child count them. How many are there of each shape? Which shape has the most? The least? You can even make a graph of your yummy treats!

It doesnʼt matter if one is pregnant with their first or third child, a mother still needs support, guidance, renewal, and rejuvenation every day. What better way to do this than join a prenatal yoga class? Pregnant women are very aware of body changes, and yoga allows them to embrace the transformation

with a truly open heart. Prenatal yoga, when practiced mindfully, can have countless benefits, which include increased flexibility, strength, overall balance, and healthy circulation.

Practicing prenatal yoga also alleviates common pregnancy problems, such as indigestion, heartburn, morning sickness, fatigue, back pain, swelling and insomnia. Mind-body awareness is a critical part of prenatal yoga as it develops concentration, focus, and reduces stress. Itʼs about developing moment-to-moment awareness, especially useful during labor as it reduces anxiety and fear. The ability to be present and breathe through the sensations of stretching or pose holding allows one to soften and surrender - similar to the experience of labor.

For sciatica pain, practice this particular exercise while sitting or standing. Bend your right standing leg over the left thigh. Cross your right ankle over the opposite knee. Open your bent knee to the side, sitting down a little deeper. With a lengthened spine, lean your torso forward until you feel a stretch in the bent legʼs hip. Hold here for 5 -10 breaths if standing, or 1-2 minutes if seated. Breathing that uses the transverse abdominals (TVA) is extremely valuable for pregnant women. TVA are deep abdominal muscles that make up the foundation of the abdominal core. They support a pregnant woman's growing belly and protect the ligaments that stabilize the uterus. ʻBelly breathingʼ is a simple, gentle, safe, and effective way to work the TVA in pregnancy. You can start by sitting with the lengthened neutral spine. With each inhale allow the belly to expand. This movement allows the diaphragm more room to move down with the in breath. With each exhaltion allow the belly to gently move back toward the spine. This exercise increases energy while simultaneously toning your muscles.

Most parents have experienced their normally, well-behaved child having a tantrum or meltdown right in the middle of their carefully planned (and much needed) vacation. Itʼs easy to blame the disruption of a childʼs schedule for their

disgruntled behavior, and this very well may play a role in it, but how many of us connect the dots between what we feed our children and how they are behaving?

Itʼs a challenge to eat healthy away from home. My son and I follow a gluten free (GF) and dairy free diet. Every day I have to carefully plan our menu, whether eating on the road or at home. Listed below are some tips on feeding your family a healthy balanced diet while traveling.

1. Pack as much food from home as you possibly can. When on the road, thick vegetable stews/soups travel well. Invest in several good thermos containers and - safe, stainless steel to-go ware food containers. Sandwich wraps are great for traveling as well, like nut butter and fruit spread rolls (mock PB&Jʼs) or even hummus and vegetable wraps.

2. For snacks, take nuts, fruits and vegetables with either yogurt, ranch dressing or hummus for dipping. You can also buy small packs of nut butter from Whole Foods that can be easily squeezed on an apple slice or celery stick. Trail mix can be fun to make as well. Use a variety of organic nuts and seeds, dried fruits, cocoa nibs (very high in antioxidants) and gluten free Oʼs cereal (you can substitute cheerios – the no sugar variety). Protein or snack bars made with minimal ingredients are great to keep on hand also. PURE and KIND brands are good options that are available at Whole Foods, Trader Joeʼs and your local health food store.

3. Your phone can be a valuable asset on vacation. If you have the capability, use YELP to locate restaurants along the way that offer healthier options rather than mainstream fast food. Some of our favorites are Chipotle, Panda Express (not organic or GF), El Pollo Loco, PF Changs (GF menu) and Outback (GF menu). You can also do a search on the Internet before your trip to identify restaurants and grocery stores. A carefully planned vacation menu can make for a healthy and more peaceful vacation.

but close!). Here are our top five stay- cationdestinations that are surely worth a visit this summer.

- Monterey -A couple hours from the San Francisco bay lies the sleepy beach townof Monterey. Home of the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, possi -bilities are endless in this beautiful beach- front town. Take in the ocean view or even better, let your kids

get up close and personal byfeeding otters and penguins for around $30. Hop on the free trolley while shopping and snacking at Cannery Row or Carmel - by - the - Sea. Central to downtown, the Aquarium, and Old Fishermanʼs Wharf is the Best Western Monterey Beach Resort - a solid option for families on the go. Pack a picnic and drive just 7 miles to the many hidden beaches along 17 Mile Drive where you and your kids can explore tide pools as they show you what they learned at the Aquarium the day before. More great finds - the Monterey County Youth Museum, or exercise your sea legs with the Monterey Bay Whale Watch.

Your Ultimate Family

Stay-cation - Big Sur -A scenic drive down Hwy 1 leads you a few miles past Carmel Valley to your outdoor destination of Big Sur. If youʼd like to take the little ones camping, this is the place to do it. Big Sur is home to a few state parks and camp grounds. Families

can feel safe staying at Big Sur Campgrounds and Cabins. But hurry! There are only a few cabins left to book. Let your kids explore by hiking through gigantic redwoods to McWay falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Take a soak in the Skyes Hot Springs, one of two natural hot springs within the area. Your kids will love looking for dolphins and seals while hiking to hidden coves at the Point Lobos State Reserve. For children 6 yrs. and older, saddle up and take a horse ride along the beach at Andrew Molera State Park. Lastly, replenish yourself at family-friendly restaurants in town. Satisfy your sweet tooth at Big Sur Bakery or enjoy vegan and vegetarian options at joint eateries, Café Kevah and Nepenthe.

- Calistoga -Just past Napa is the quaint little town of Calistoga. Yes, you can take a trip to Napa and bring your youngsters along too. Go ahead and wine taste guilt - free: Sterling Vineyards offers a kid -  friendly gondola ride, while Castello di Amorosa Winery has a tour of the castle for children 5 yrs. and older. Visit Old Faithful Geyser, which erupts every 30 minutes, and then head over to explore the Petrified Forest (claim your 10% discount coupon online). Near Hwy 29 in Santa Rosa is Safari West, which brings the African jungle to young explorers and offers a “full moon madness lodging” deal for you. Continue to downtown Calistoga where you can peruse shops and restaurants, including Oxbow Public Market, which, like the Ferry Building in SF, offers a quick bite to eat for families on the go.

- Lake Tahoe -Squaw Valley at North Shore is the perfect mountain getaway to bring the whole family. Because it is located in California and just 10 minutes from Tahoe City, you wonʼt have to worry about exposing your kids to casinos and smokers. Stay at Squaw Valley Lodge, the Resort at Squaw Creek, or Red Wolf Lodge during your stay. For around $200/night, these hotels offer centrally located and comfortable condo options complete with kitchenettes - convenient for families with small children. Encourage your kidsʼ creativity as they make pottery, tye-dye, jewelry, or handmade masks for only $10 each. On the valley floor, Squaw Valley Adventure Center offers mini-golf, a bungee trampoline, climbing wall, and a rope course. An exciting gondola ride up to High Camp greets families with a roller skating rink and pool. Alternatively, there are great bike trails along the Truckee River, or for the cost of a raft and floaties, spend the afternoon playing in the shallows of the river.

- San Diego  -(Worth a vacation!) - If you are looking to really get out of dodge, look no further than San Diego. Only in California could you drive across the state, stopping at an array of vistas to get to one of the most beautiful beach destinations in America. Centrally located to beaches, theme parks, hotels, and restaurants, San Diego is your one-stop-shop for some serious FUN! When you arrive, make sure to relax and enjoy kid -

friendly accommodations, such as complimen-tary toys at Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Build a sandcastle at the family friendly south shoreline of La Jolla Beach or take the family snorkeling, biking, or kayaking with the San Diego Bike/Kayak Tours. Book early and get $5 off your package. Hungry? Stop at Anthonyʼs Fish Grotto right next to the Maritime Museum where kids can explore ships, submarines, or a weekend pirate show before or after they chow down on some local favorites. Want more adventure? Spend the day at SeaWorld Adventure Park or LEGOLAND California. Both theme parks offer online specials and package deals.
