Alan Weinel, Editor JERRY BUILT June was a good month, starting when we approved and signed a 2 YEAR CONTRACT with the Dante Club—with a firm $25 lunch cost through May, 2019. In May, 2018, the Dante Club will talk with us about any proposed rate increase for the year starting in 2019, with a similar discussion each May after that. We’ll get a 1 year notice of any rate increases, giving us time to digest it and take any further action needed. Thanks to Tony Vigil who worked with me to get this together. Thanks to Ted Patterson and others who came up with some alternatives. How about that Civil War program. Some of us couldn’t lift the old rifle. Thanks, Tony, for another good speaker. I’ve heard about the Renaissance Society. Maybe I’ll look into it. We brought in two new members, John Hanson and Bob Clanton, as a result of our Golf Expo presence. Welcome, guys. I got to know John when we played golf together. He’s a winner. Bob, looking forward to getting to know you, too. I am told there are several more possibilities for next month. We lost Ken Lentsch, and that hurts. As you all know by now, the annual Day in the Park was moved to July 19th due to the terrible June heat wave. Perhaps July will be milder! Our recent survey of possible activities came up with two new ones that should work. Wine tasting came in as the top desired activity, with Classic Cars following closely. Don Neufeld, owner of a wonderful classic “48 Chevy Woodie, has agreed to put together a series of Saturday expeditions to automobile shows, many found in shopping center parking lots, and to museums like the California Auto Museum and maybe Blackhawk in Concord. Don shows his ‘48 Woodie at these shows, and will be able to take us to good shows with lunch to follow. Now to find someone to take us to wineries for wine tasting tours.

As you all know by now, the annual Day in the Park was moved to July 19th due to the terrible June heat wave. Perhaps July will be milder!

Our recent survey of possible activities came up with two new ones that should work. Wine tasting came in as the top desired activity, with Classic Cars following closely. Don Neufeld, owner of a wonderful classic “48 Chevy Woodie, has agreed to put together a series of Saturday expeditions to automobile shows, many found in shopping center parking lots, and to museums like the California Auto Museum and

TONY’S TALK

Greetings fellow SIRs members: Here are some significant facts for the month of July: First, the month of July was named after Julius Caesar by a decision of the Roman Senate in 44BC, as that was the month of his birth. Second, July 4th is the day in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress and America came into existence. Our country celebrates this day with fireworks, family reunions, concerts, barbecues, picnics, parades, baseball games, etc. Third, on July 11, 1804, during a duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton was killed. Fourth, call it a blessing or curse to humankind, the first ever nuclear bomb was field-tested by the scientists on July 16, 1945. The testing venue was Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Our speaker for July will be Hal Witsaman. Hal is a member of SIRs Branch 69. He is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy. He served as an officer on merchant ships and two years active duty in the US Navy aboard a patrol craft and minesweeper. He became an attorney and practiced Marine law for 6 years for the US government and 30 years in private practice handling maritime cases of all kinds which occurred on the Great Lakes and the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

Hal’s presentation will be about a two ship collision that occurred in upper Lake Michigan. The collision involved a Greek ship and a Swedish vessel that occurred in deep fog. Hal represented the Swedish vessel and a good friend of his represented the Greek vessel. If time permits, he may discuss a couple of River cases also.

Our August speaker will be Will Robins. Will has an interesting professional goal: Revolutionize golf instruction worldwide. His program at Empire Ranch in Folsom is flourishing, his coaching model is being used by 70 teachers around the world, and in October he was named by Golf Digest as one of 72 “Best Young Teachers in America.”

Bob held various jobs until 1973 when he started with Varian Medical Systems. He spent virtually all his working years (41 years!) at Varian as a quality engineer.

Bob and his wife Linda have two children and three

grandchildren. He enjoys golf, bowling, family activities and travel. Also, his third Great-grandfather was brother to Newman Haynes (Old Man) Clanton whose sons were of the OK Corral fame!

John was born and raised in Sebastopol, CA. After high school, he joined the Air Force and served from 1967 to 1971. He was stationed in the US and Thailand and finished his enlistment at Edwards AFB in Southern California. While stationed in Thailand, his base was only 40 miles from the Ho Chi Min Trail; the Air Force personnel watched their aircraft bomb the trail at night.

After his Air Force tour, John worked independently as a heavy equipment truck driver all over the US and Canada. After 17 years of truck driving, John went back to school at Heald College and earned a degree in electronics. He worked for NEC until the dot.com bust and finished his working career as an industrial electrician at Cottage Bakery.

BOWLING NEWS

The Branch 69 bowlers are in between seasons right now, but many of the guys are competing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Country Club Lanes. In July, several of our Branch 69 bowlers will compete at a tournament in Pollock Pines. August will see more bowlers travel to Reno for a tournament at the National Bowling Stadium.

I passed around a sign-up sheet at the June luncheon for the 2017-2018 bowling season. I haven’t contacted all the bowlers from other branches who bowl with us, but based on the sign-ups from our own branch, I am pretty confident that we can expand to 14 teams for next year. I’ll keep everyone posted via emails and my presentation at the July & August luncheons.

RECRUITING & PUBLICITY

We added two new members in June from Golf Expo, plus we had several guests for the luncheon. My thanks to Ted Patterson, Dan Calcagno and Tony Vigil who have been helping contact the guys who expressed interest in our branch at Golf Expo. The four of us will continue reaching out to the Golf Expo contacts to see if they will join us for lunch.

Let’s keep up on our individual recruiting efforts: as we have seen this year, it’s no easy task keeping up with member attrition.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the July

luncheon.

GOLF NEWS

Reservations, but No Show

This is hurting us and the Branch is asking that you take it seriously when you say you are coming. We want to see

you. But when some just don’t show without calling, it hurts us financially. As I have previously shared, in Febru-ary and April it cost the Branch about $500 out of the treas-ury. Basically, if you don’t show it can cost the whole amount of your annual contribution. The BEC talked about this, and we do not want to become onerous and back charge anyone. We’re supposed to be having fun here. So we’re going to try to manage this by keeping you aware of it so it doesn’t happen.

So, PLEASE, if you say you are coming, show up! And if something comes up, PLEASE let your caller know as soon as you can. Thanks—it really does matter.
