“My Yoke is Easy, and my Burden Light”

The Gospel reading for this Sunday, Matthew 11:25-30, is one of the most commonly used readings for the funeral Mass. Jesus’ invitation makes it very appropriate for funerals: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me… and you will find rest for yourselves; for my yoke is easy and my burden light.” For friends of relatives of the deceased, what a consola-tion it would be to hear of these words from the mouth of the Savior! How-ever, within the context of the Gospel of Matthew, we can also examine these statements of Jesus from a very different perspective.

All you who labor and are burdened: This does not refer to those who toil and are exhausted physically. Nor does it refer to those who have worked hard in this life and now are ready to rest eternally in the next life. Rather, the Evangelist—the author of Matthew’s Gospel—has in mind the religious rules/obligations imposed on the common people by the Pharisees and the scribes. Later in Matthew, we hear this saying from Jesus: “They [Pharisees and scribes] tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people's shoulders…” (Mt 23:4).

Take my yoke upon you: According to biblical scholars, the image of the yoke is that of an animal harnessed to do work. The rabbis would speak of the “yoke of the Torah,” or “yoke of the Law.” When Jesus invites his disciples and others to “take his yoke” because his “yoke is easy,” this does not suggest that he advocates the easy way in religion, but that he wants to free the people from the unnecessary burden of religion.

All in all, the point here is that while religion should instill a sense of joy in the hearts of believers, sometimes it does the exact opposite. Religious leaders can impose heavy burdens on the faithful, so much so that everything becomes an undesirable obligation. The Lord’s message was as relevant back then as it is now. The purpose of religion is to develop a relationship with God, but if one were to focus too much on the legal and external aspects, that in itself may very well stand in the way of authentic worship. This is where I think Pope Francis comes in the picture. Some traditional Catholics have criticized him for being too lax. I do not think that is a fair criticism. I feel like the Pope is very much in line with Jesus. All that Francis has done in the last few years shows that he wants to faithful to live out their authentic Christian calling. He wants them to experience “freedom” in their worship. If in our Catholic daily living, we just focus on keeping the commandments, avoiding mortal sin, trying to get to heaven, etc., we may very well become “mechanical” and may not experience any authentic relationship with God. The Lord Jesus’ invitation today is for us to come to him and take his yoke, so that we may experience joy in our Christian worship.

UN REY HUMILDE Como el centro tonal en música, la nota que sigue retornando en las lecturas de hoy es la humildad. Es-peramos con gozosa expectativa la venida de nuestro Señor como Rey. Pero se nos dice que esperemos y nos regocijemos en este manso y humilde rey, montado en un burrito. No en el caballo o el carruaje de los grandes y poderosos, sino en una humilde bestia que carga al Rey cuyo dominio se extiende "desde el gran río hasta los últi-mos rincones de la tierra" (Zacarías 9:10). Este Rey viene a desterrar las armas del guerrero y a traer la paz. ¡No es de extrañar que un mundo abatido se regocije y dé gra-cias a Dios!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

En el año 2001, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago se convirtió en el primer laico caribeño beatificado por la Igle-sia. Su vida fue ejemplar en la caridad y en el amor a la liturgia, pues promovió la participación de los fieles de una manera activa, mucho antes de que el Concilio Vaticano II así lo pidiera. En 1963 una colitis rectal muy severa lo llevó a los brazos de Cristo resucitado, a la edad de 44 años. Carlitos, como muchos lo llaman, trabajó en la Univer-sidad de Puerto Rico y fundó un grupo apostólico laical en el Centro Católico de dicha universidad. Allí pudo obrar por el desarrollo del humanismo cristiano, la participación activa de los laicos en la liturgia de la Iglesia y por la reno-vación de la Vigilia Pascual. Solía decir que los cristianos "vivimos para esa noche" como cumbre y centro de nues-tra fe. Carlitos es modelo para los laicos comprometidos con su fe. Él insistía no sólo en una participación activa en la pas-toral de la Iglesia, sino también en la liturgia de la Iglesia en una época donde la Misa todavía se consideraba obra exclusiva de los sacerdotes. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
