PUBLISHING INFORMATION
Happy HOT July! It is my honor to serve as your Chairman of the Board for the 2016-
2017 year. A couple of weeks ago we honored some very deserving hardworking members. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Speaking of members, I want to thank CTAP Technology Park, Women of Valor (Pastor Sherrell Compton), Okaloosa Title and Abstract and CCB Community Bank for their sponsorship of the awards, desserts and drinks at the Installation and Awards Banquet.
This month I want you to think about the other members of the Chamber of Commerce. I want you to switch your mindset just for a
bit and ask yourself, “How can I help that member?” Here are a few questions that you can ask yourself.
1. Have I been to that member’s place of business?
2. Do I really know what that business sells or the service they provide?
3. Am I doing business with a Chamber member?
4. Are they incorporated into my everyday referral process?
Think about this, if someone asks you for a recommendation for a bank, lawn service, pest control, electrician, A/C service repair, insurance, attorney, do you know who you would recommend? When you switch your mindset to learn about someone else’s business, the referral back to them is so easy. WHY, because you know who they are and what they do.
This is the year for your business to shine with the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce. Get involved! Get to know your fellow Chamber members.

July marks the start of the 60th year of the Crestview Chamber of Commerce! What an exciting time! If you are a new member, a longtime member, or maybe a potential member, there is no time like the present to get involved! I remember when I first joined the Chamber, Joe Faulk from Edward Jones said that it’s just like joining a gym…. You can’t expect to see results by signing up and paying membership fees, you have to show up and put in the work to get what you want. And he is absolutely right!
So, with my first ever Focus article, I challenge each of you to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t settle for the same old routine,
really commit to trying something new. If that means going to a committee meeting- do it. If that means attending an After Hours- do it. If that means volunteering at the next event- do it. Even if that means something as simple as sitting beside someone you don’t know at the next monthly breakfast and introducing yourself- do it. There are so many ways you can maximize your Chamber investment. We welcome you all with open arms and will help you in any way that we can.
It is an honor to serve you as the incoming Chairman- Elect. I’m looking forward to working with Dawn and all of our amazing members more in the future. This Chamber has seen its fair share of changes over the last year, but I’m confident that we
are on the path to great success. And we want YOU right here with us! Hope to see you real soon!

By Brian HughesPresident, Crestview Area Sister City Program
CRESTVIEW — We’ve all been there on at least one vacation occasion. The frenzied airport baggage claim. The hectic—and expensive—taxi ride to the
hotel. Arriving to discover your reservation went astray. Negotiating alternatives with a night clerk who really doesn’t care. Then finally hauling your tired ol’ derriere into a dull, sterile room, waking up the next morning to a prepackaged “continental break-fast,” and wondering just what continent would feed offal like that to visitors.
But when we visit Noirmoutier, Crestview’s congenial Sister City on an enchanting island off the west coast of France, our arrival is considerably different.
From Paris or elsewhere in Europe, we converge on Nantes, the ancient historic seat of the dukes of Brittany. Instead of deciphering bus schedules or hailing a taxi, we’re greeted by dear friends—or, if it’s our first visit, friends who will endear themselves to us within hours, if not minutes—who take us to our French homes-away-from-home.
For those who have previously visited Noirmoutier, it’s the beginning of another wonderful adventure. For those who’ve just joined the Crestview Area Sister City Program and make the journey for the first time, it’s the beginning of a lifelong romance with an enchanting place and, more importantly, its charming, hospitable people.
We are welcomed into their lovely homes—no one ever stays in a hotel—and for a week or more, surrender to gracious French hospitality, cultural experiences spanning centuries, and exceptional cooking found nowhere else in the world.
Such immersive home stay experiences are the heart of the Sister City program, and for our friends from France, called Noirmoutrins, the experience is similar when they visit us in Okaloosa County.
During 12 days this October, 45 Noirmoutrins will visit to help us celebrate Crestview’s Centennial and 20 years of friendship between our cities. The Sister City committee is searching for host families between Niceville and Crestview to assure our friends’ experiences are as fulfilling and memorable as ours are when we visit Noirmoutier.
Hosting is a fun, cultural experience that pays boundless dividends, not least of which are realized when we visit Noirmoutier. All it takes is a spare bedroom and a big heart to welcome new members to your family.
At least five more host families are needed to assure all our visitors have a warm, cozy, welcoming home to call their own for 12 days in October. Then wait’ll you see how generously you’re repaid when we head to France in September 2017!
For information about hosting a Noirmoutrin couple, contact Crestview Area Sister City members Brian Hughes, 603.2584, [email protected]; or Pam and Joe Coffield, 682.8437, [email protected].
The Two-Way Reward Plunging into local culture by staying with a host family
Kathy and Philippe Lemoine welcomed two members of the Crestview Area Sister City Program to their lovely home in Noirmoutier during the group’s May 2015 visit.
Frequently host families hold social gather-ings with multiple guests. Clockwise from lower right, Til Fischer and his hosts, Kathy and Philippe Lemoine, share conversation and refreshments with Northwest Florida State College students Tristan Allen and Daniel Thornton at the home of their host, Paddy DeBroucker, right.
Crestview Area Sister City Program President Brian Hughes relaxes with high-brow French literature in the lovely living room of his Noirmoutrin hosts Kathy and Philippe Lemoine.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
Powered by our members CHELCO is a not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative serving
more than 48,000 accounts in Walton, Okaloosa, Holmes and Santa Rosa counties in the Florida panhandle. As a cooperative, we are owned by those we serve, our members. CHELCO is committed to the communities we serve. Our commitment goes beyond providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity. Commitment to community is one of CHELCO’s seven guiding principles and steers the co-op to seek out opportunities to improve our area. We accomplish this through involvement in community organizations such as the Crestview Chamber that promote local business and support our military and veterans.
CHELCO also works in the interests of its members to strategically control costs while maintaining or improving customer service, safety and reliability. We do this, in part by encouraging participation in programs which promote energy efficiency and prudent electricity use. These programs include Beat the Peak, which helps limit and control energy use during critical electrical peak demand periods, our Touchstone Energy Home program, which aids members in using efficient building practices, and with our geothermal, dual fuel, and mini split heat pump rebates for installing high efficiency heating and cooling equipment.
For more information about these programs, contact CHELCO’s marketing department at 850-892-2111 or email us at [email protected].
For additional information, updates, and useful links, please visit our website at CHELCO.com. Stop by one of our area offices in a community near you (Auburn, Baker, Bluewater Bay, DeFuniak Springs, Freeport, or South Walton).

Get to know Okaloosa GasThe Gas District was originally created by the State Legislature as an
Independent Special District of the State of Florida in the year 1953 and was known as Okaloosa County Gas District. In the year 2000 the Legislature renamed the District to what it is referred to this day as, Okaloosa Gas District. The District is a self-supporting organization and performs business on a not-for-profit basis. The purpose for establishing Okaloosa County Gas District was to promote the natural gas commodity by acquiring, constructing, owning, operating, managing, maintaining, extending, improving, and financing one or more gas distribution systems or one or more gas transmission systems or gas transmission and gas distribution systems for its member municipalities of Crestview, Niceville, Valparaiso, and Fort Walton Beach. Okaloosa Gas District has a governing Board of Directors. These Directors are appointed by each cities governing body from the City of Crestview, Niceville, Valparaiso and Fort Walton Beach. One member of the board is also appointed by Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) answers directly to the Board of Directors. Under the CEO there are four Vice Presidents, one for each department within the organization. These departments are: Operations, Marketing, Corporate Services and Accounting & Finance. Okaloosa Gas District’s Service Territory takes in the counties of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton. The District sells Natural Gas to the city gas companies of Milton and Gulf Breeze and transports gas for TECO Energy in Bay County. Okaloosa Gas serves several military installations within its service area. These installations are Eglin Main, Hurlburt Field, 7th Special Forces, Duke Field, Navy EOD Training Compound and Naval Air Station (NAS) Whiting Field. The District is comprised of over 42,000 customers. These customers are made up from the Residential and Commercial markets, Military, State and Local Governments as well as Schools, Colleges, Churches and Day Care Facilities. The District is proud to employ more than 125 employees from the surrounding areas. The District has confidence in the commodity it sells and transports. Okaloosa Gas strongly believes that Natural Gas is America’s energy for the future. It’s abundant, clean and affordable, signifying that the customer is responsible by its use. The commodity can be found widely throughout the USA.
