Social Justice Corner Peace to this Household

In the Gospel today, Jesus preaches peace. He asks his disciples to greet each household he visits with the words “Peace to this household.” In the Epistle, Paul preaches inclusion as well as peace. Inclusion is emphasized in the new creation of Christianity. All were welcome – Jews

and Gentiles alike. Paul emphasizes the promulgation of peace as well – “Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule.” This is the foundation of the Church – peace, inclusion and mercy. Jesus cares about the disciples who are just starting out on their journeys to the farthest points on the earth. He invests them with his ability to cure and the disciples are amazed that they are able to cure the sick. They are able to care for people in a real way. They help the poor and the sick, with mercy to all. So the message of Jesus is going out to all – Gentiles and Jews alike. That message is brought by the disciples and Jesus ex-pects us to share the message we have heard. He needed many laborers for the harvest – we are the laborers! We have been given a gift that we can share – our love of God and belief in the Word of Jesus. Jesus wants us to spread His word bringing the message of peace and inclusion. That same mission applies now and in the future. He wants us to live as best we can in His image. “What would Jesus do?” should be our question. What is our response?

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reverend Fr. Jeff J. Fernandez I was born and raised in the Philippines and at the age of 17, migrated to California with my parents and four siblings. The inspiration to priestly life and ministry was imbedded in me at a young age. The call to ser-vice was nourished as I became involved with many church activities in school and in the parish, both back in the Philippines and here in the United States. I had my primary and secondary education at St. Joseph’s Academy, Las Piñas city, home to the Bamboo Organ, enshrined in the parish church of St. Joseph. The lives and the prayers of the many people I had the blessing to encounter in life, people who made me not only their friend but a part of their own family inspired me to embrace the wonderful gift of priestly life and service. I finished my Bachelors Degree in Arts and Masters of Divinity at St. Patrick’s Seminary and Uni-versity, Menlo Park and received my Bachelors Degree in Sacred Theology through St. Mary’s Seminary and University, Baltimore. Since I arrived in San Jose, I have been a part of the life of the diocese serving in different ca-pacities and was a part of the third graduating class of the Institute of Leadership in Ministry. I serve as Episcopal Master of Ceremonies. I was ordained to the priesthood, June 7, 2014 and served as parochial vicar at St. Francis of Assisi and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph. As I continue my ministry and taking the role as pastor of Queen of the Apostles parish, I as-pire to be like the Good Shepherd: Blessed, Broken and Shared. Pray for me as I keep you in mine so that through the maternal guidance of Mary, our Queen and Mother, together we jour-ney in faith, hope and love for the greater glory of God. To Queen of Apostles

Sandwiches for the Homeless Thank you for your donations to the sandwich-making ministry here at Queen of Apostles. We meet twice a month to prepare sandwiches, fruit and snack for the homeless who come to Casa De Clara, a Catholic Worker House in San Jose. We gladly accept donations of peanut butter, jam, granola bars and cash donations. Please bring the food to Fr. Jim’s garage. Cash donations may be left at the Rectory. Thank you for your generosity. Prophets and Peacemaker

Cardinal Yves Congar Yves Congar was one of the many theologians at the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. He was one of those who breathed life into the Church and brought about many needed changes. As Pope John XIII said in his opening statement in 1962, “we need to open the windows and let in fresh air.” Yves Congar was ordained as a Dominican priest and served as a military chaplain in 1939. He was captured and interned as a prisoner of war, an experience that confirmed his commitment to ecumenism and a need for greater open-ness to the world. Pope John asked him to lead several committees for Vati-can II – on revelation, on mission, on ecumenism. His mark is especially reflected in the definition of the Church as “the people of God” and in the role of the laity. Quote: “If there is sin on the part of the reform movement in refusing or misunderstanding the demand for Church unity, there is parallel sin for the institution to misconstrue or stifle prophetic impulses.”
