It appears to me that there continues to be misunderstanding about the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick— I looked for a concise description online—while I found many articles —I thought some of the pieces went into way too much confusing detail. Below is an excerpt from an article that explains the basics of it.

Why do we anoint the sick? by Victoria M. Tufano

One of the great mysteries of our faith is the incarnation, our core belief that the eternal and al-mighty God became a human being, a man who could and did suffer just as we do. During his ministry on earth, Jesus had a particular concern for sick people; he healed them not just with a word of power, but also with a human and compassionate touch. The anointing of the sick, like all sacraments, is one way that the church continues the ministry of Jesus. Through it, Christ continues to touch, heal, and comfort. The Letter of James attests that this practice has always been part of ministry: “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the church” (5:14). The sacrament may be received by a baptized person who “begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age,” according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1514)—seriously ill, but not necessarily near death—so it may not be apparent that someone receiving the sacrament is ill. This sacrament was once called extreme unction (meaning final anointing) because it had, over time, come to be reserved for the dying. The Second Vatican Council renamed it “anointing of the sick” to describe its appropriate place in the life of the Christian faithful: to offer strength and healing in time of serious illness. In the case of anointing a person near death, it is often accompanied by the sacraments of reconciliation (if possible) and viaticum (holy communion for the dying). Does the sacrament heal? Yes. Is the healing physical? It is certainly what we hope for when we celebrate this sacrament, but we cannot approach it with this expectation. We pray that the Holy Spirit may give strength, peace, and courage to the sick to help them face the difficulties of illness and age with faith and hope. Sometimes such inner healing results in a physical cure; sometimes it allows medical treatment to be more effective; and sometimes it helps someone face death calmly and hopefully. In each case we are grateful for the compassion of our God. This article appeared in the November 2011 issue of U.S. Catholic (Vol. 76, No. 11, page 44-46). Let me just add to that. The Sacrament of the Sick is for anyone (who has reached the age of reason) who becomes sick. Often if someone is preparing for surgery they will contact me to administer the sacrament—at home—after weekend Mass, or daily Mass. It is not “Last Rites”. In the book of prayers that accompany this sacrament, there are prayers that are specific to particular situations (before surgery, advanced age, chronic pain situations, etc.). The prayers for the dying and the prayers for the dead are separate and are not part of administering the sacrament. I mention all this because of my own experiences and those of other priests I have been talking with. We all recount how we receive calls that say something like:

ON VACATION? If you’ve been away or are going… any help you can provide with “catching up” with envelopes/donations would be greatly appreciated! Many Thanks!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION A long-standing participant in Eucharistic Adoration expressed his sentiments recently: “It is an honor to come into this unique form of worship that speaks so much in total silence. I find myself completely absorbed into another place of holiness during Adoration. When the hour is done, I leave with new peace and strength to face the problems of this life.” Spend time before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. In that peaceful Presence where time stands still, you’ll receive an abundance of graces to sustain you in all things.

All are welcome!

LIVING OUR FAITH

Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic organization inspired by the mission of Jesus to live and work with poor communities in Africa, Asia and the Americas, responding to basic needs and helping to create a more just and compassionate world. St. Joseph’s parishioner Jean Thomas’ sister, Peg Vámosy has been a Maryknoll Lay Missioner since 2008, serving in East Timor, Cambodia, and presently in Monte San Juan, El Salvador. A horticulturist, she works with farm families to help improve their agricultural practices and build stronger communities. With growing concerns over global climate change Peg is also now involved in an environmental ministry in the rural parish, organizing community members and youths to preserve and protect their natural resources. The agricultural ministry learns about and attempts to implement sustainable techniques to promote food security, a critical issue for people who live on the marginal land with limited resources. The environ-mental ministry aims to increase awareness of environmental issues and ways to respond to them. This includes promoting various essential practices of recycling and cutting back or eliminating non-biodegradable products. Your generous gift to this Living Our Faith collection supports the work that Peg and the other Maryknoll Lay Missioners serving around the world do, where the compassion of the faithful transforms lives. Peg Vámosy will speak briefly on behalf of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners the weekend of July 13th & 14th at all Masses.

(continued from page 3) “My grandmother/aunt/grandfather/neighbor just died and we need one of the priests to come immediately and administer Last Rites”. When possible we do come over immediately, and offer prayers (but a priest cannot administer a sacrament to the deceased). However, it is not always possible to come immediately. Also, if we can make contact earlier in an illness, we can offer pastoral care to the person on their journey. HIPAA laws prevent hospitals from notifying us of parishioners who are hospitalized. If family requests a visit, we will be glad to make contact with you. Obviously, there are times when the illness and demise are very sudden, and whatever way we as a parish can serve you we will. Generally speaking though, earlier contact with the priest allows him to serve people better. Thank you for reading this, any questions?—contact me. God Bless our health and strength.

Peter

YOUTH MINISTRY/CONFIRMATION FAITH FORMATION

A Family Perspective Just like the seventy two disciples sent out by Jesus in today’s gospel, families are expected to be MISSION-ARIES. By our lives, words and life style we proclaim peace, commitment, fidelity and respect to a culture caught up with violence and gratification. Bud Ozar

Are you or someone you know interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Interested in completing your sacraments? Are you the parent of a First Communion or Confirmation student who has not received these sacraments? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for those persons exploring the Catholic faith, desiring to enter the Church, or complete their sacraments. Persons inquiring include non-baptized persons, those baptized in other Christian traditions, or Catholics who have not completed their sacraments. Perhaps you are ready to take the next step on your faith journey and wonder what it takes to be fully initiated into the Catholic church. If you are interested or have questions, please contact: St. Joseph’s Parish Office at 315-488-8490

Registration for the 2019-2020 school year is now open. Classes will start September 15th. Visit the parish website to register. Any questions, please feel free to contact Kristyn or Kathy.

Confirmation Registration 2019-2020: It’s time to start thinking about our Confirmation Program and Youth Ministry happenings for the year ahead! For any high school student who would like to start the Confirmation process who will be in the 9th grade and older next fall: we will be sending out registration forms to you by the end of the month. We also will have copies of the Confirmation registration form at the front desk. We do not offer online registration for Confirmation at this time. Any questions? You can contact Cindy Heath or Jodi Hunt @ 315-488-8490 ext. 11. Or contact us via email at: [email protected]

A Special Event for Brady Faith Children Some of our high school youth and youth from the St. Charles-St. Ann’s parish will be teaming up from July 23rd through July 25th to provide a Vacation Bible School for the Brady Faith Center’s neighborhood children. The Brady Center will be transporting 25+ children over to St. Charles-St. Ann’s in Taunton where we will share our faith, our love and have a great time with all of the children. We provide a bible story time & lesson, a craft, along with a snack/lunch and of course lots of fun activities. Terri Condon, the Youth Minister at St. Charles-St. Ann’s and I have been busy planning and preparing for this terrific experience. We absolutely LOVE working together with our high school youth and how wonderful it is to bring 2 parishes together; having our youth work side by side sharing our gifts, our blessings and our talents with the children of Brady. What a message it sends to all! We are cutting back a bit this year but we do need a little help to make this happen. Below is a list of items if you’d like to help us out with this great event. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. All items should be dropped off to the parish office by Thursday, July 11th: individual snack size bags of chips, individual snack size pretzel sticks, Capri sun drink bags, Goldfish, marshmallows (large and small), individual size fruit cups, fruit snacks, small apples, grapes, clemen-tine's, package of individual American cheese slices, mayonnaise and monetary donations are always so appreciated! Thanks again St. Joseph’s for always supporting these valuable outreach projects. This is an incredible event for both the children of the south side of Syracuse AND for our young adults!

Happy Summer! Cindy

We invite you to join us Thursday, July 18, 5:30-8:30pm as we celebrate 75 years of spiritual, personal and professional growth, healing and peace.
