Gospel Meditation Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture

We are all familiar with the refrain, “You have put on Christ. In him you have been baptized. Alleluia, alleluia!” In Baptism, we “put on” Christ. In putting on Christ, we put on all that Christ is and represents: hope, faith, and love. We are no longer bound to the sins and failures of the flesh, that part of us that resists God and relies exclusively on human means. It also means that we are not in debt to our past, complete with its sins, failures, regrets, fears, and unfulfilled dreams. There is always hope. In putting on Christ, we put on God’s vision for the world, for all of His children and for us. We have been given a road map to guide our paths and a blueprint to follow for our life’s journey. There is no need for regret, and we are not tethered to our past. Is there anything in your past that you regret? Any decision or memory that continues to haunt you? We have all made mistakes, and we have this uncanny ability to continue beating ourselves up over things we can no longer do anything about, except learn from them. To put on Christ means that I can now bring God’s unconditional love to my hurtful memories and sinful choices. With each new moment and every new choice, I can start clean and live in freedom. Imagine adults when the disciples were preaching and baptizing. They came to baptism not really knowing who they were, with pasts that were broken, seeking to live the joy of the Gospel they heard spoken to them and wanting the love they saw witnessed in the lives of those who believed. What tremendous celebrations their baptisms must have been! They could now have the support of a community, full participation in the sacraments of the church, focus for their disordered lives, consolation, healing, and an understanding of what life is really all about. Our lives are meant to be celebrations of the Spirit we have received in Baptism. How does that joy get expressed in and through you? When we truly understand that we have put on Christ, our burdens can become much lighter. It is odd that so many Christians look like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if those weights could be lifted and joy experienced!

Prayer During A Health Crisis Compassionate and Loving Father, In the face of confusion and concern impart to us the calm of your presence. In You allow us to find hope and healing. Be with those who serve the sick and give them Your caring hands. Be with those who lead and give them Your Spirit of wisdom. Be with those who have fallen ill and give them Your comforting heart. Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love. Allow us at this time of trial to then serve as instruments of that love to all we meet. We ask this in Your Name. Amen.

Mass and Holy Communion

With the reopening of public Mass after the Covid-19 shut down, those who have returned to attending Mass at Blessed Trinity/St. Patrick know that Holy Communion is given out after Mass. There are practical reasons why I chose to have Holy Communion distributed after Mass: The priest must wear a mask when giving out Holy Communion but is not to wear a mask while saying mass and the priest must sanitize his hands after each Communion if he touches the hands or if someone receives directly on the tongue. Before he sanitizes his hands, he must purify his right thumb and forefinger in an ablution cup to remove any particles of the Blessed Sacrament. This can make giving out Holy Communion longer and awkward. For these reasons I thought it best to wait until after the Mass to distribute Holy Communion. For most of us it seems like a major anomaly to not receive Holy Communion during Mass. However, there was a time in which it was normal to receive Holy Communion after Mass. People went to Mass to attend Mass, not to receive Holy Communion, and it was a time in which only a few would stay to receive Holy Communion. I agree with the norm of today that Holy Communion should be received, when possible, within the context of Mass. I do so for theological and liturgical reasons. However, this does offer an occasion for a little catechesis on the purpose of going to Mass.

The main purpose for going to Mass is not to receive Holy Communion. There are many people who have an attitude that if they cannot receive Holy Communion, why should they bother going to Mass. While there are some exceptions to the rules for receiving Holy Communion that I am going to give, I am not going into the exceptions because that is not part of the scope of this column. But let it be said, I know there are exceptions to the rules. The Rules: 1. You must be a baptized Catholic who has been properly prepared 2. You must have fasted from food for 1 hour before reception of Holy Communion 3. You must be in the state of grace 4. You must not have any interdict forbidding you to receive Holy Communion

The most common reason for someone not to be able to receive Holy Communion is that they are in the state of mortal sin. In other words, they are not in the state of Grace. Again, in other words, they have chosen to commit a sin that is grave (serious) in nature, with sufficient reflection and full consent of will. This is a mortal sin and it causes spiritual death (thus “mortal”) to the soul by the loss of Sanctify Grace. Confession/absolution is required before one returns to Holy Communion. This causes problems for some people because they remain in a habitual condition of mortal sin since they are not ready to stop the sin and thus are not able to be absolved of the sin in the Sacrament of Confession. Since they cannot receive Holy Communion, they do not go to Mass on a regular basis. Two wrongs do not make a right. Deliberately missing Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation when able to attend (again there are exceptions but not the topic of this column), is grave in nature and when done with sufficient reflection and full consent of the will, one has only added to their list of mortal sins.

So why go to Mass, besides not wanting to add to my list of mortal sins? Because our Hope of salvation is in Jesus Christ. It is He who went to the cross to win for us the grace and mercy to forgive our sins and restore us to His Sanctifying Grace. The Mass makes present the mystery of our Lord’s passion. The Eucharistic mystery is the Sacrament by which Christ is offered, present and received. It is presumptuous to receive Holy Communion without true repentance from our sins or to believe one can receive forgiveness without true repentance. It is despair to think that our situation is hopeless so why bother. Thus the virtue of Faith and Hope should be present that brings us to Mass to express our gratitude for the Grace and Mercy that Christ won for us that we might one day be able to receive if at the moment we are not. When at Mass Christ’s offering is made present as is His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. It is “right and just to give thanks”. It is a grave injustice and a lack of gratitude not to go to Mass when obliged and able, even if we cannot receive Holy Communion for our Lord has asked us to do this in remembrance of Him.

In Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Galens

Adam’s Ribs One weekend at Sunday School, they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and asked him, “Johnny, what is the matter?” “I have pain in my side,” Johnny responded. “I think I’m going to have a wife.” ©LPi

Everyday Stewardship Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments

Faith Like a Child

If you Google Search recommendations on how to raise generous children, almost every list of ideas begins with — or at least contains — the directive for adults to be good models of generosity themselves. Our children learn from our actions much more than from our words. Of course, when I think back over the years while my children were growing up, I think I may have learned as much from them as they learned from me. There is a time between early childhood and middle school where a child seems to be freer to give and share than at any other time in life. It is around the age of First Communion when the cries of “mine” turn to laughter and smiles, and the urge to be a part of something bigger than oneself leads to sharing. Before you know it, the child hits the pre-teen years, and once again, he or she becomes the center of the universe. I believe that the previous paragraph is all true, however, the stages described seem to repeat themselves throughout adulthood. Don’t you agree? Sometimes we fall into seeing ourselves as the center of the universe, or we become consumed by our state in life or with what we have acquired. Also, we at times are generous and loving people. It is sin that draws us back into ourselves and away from any meaningful life of stewardship and generosity. In order to be freed for love, we need role models to help us see what really matters. We need to reflect on the example of many of our brothers and sisters in Christ. And, yes, we need to look to children who may be at the point in their lives where sharing is fun, and love is something in abundance. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
