A LETTER FROM DEACON RAY HEAP Dear Brothers & Sisters, It has been a great blessing to have resided in St. Angela Merici Parish since it began in 1965, and most especially to have been able to function as a permanent deacon in my home parish for 44 years. This parish community has been a part of my “extended-family” for 55 wonderful years, and in this, God has granted me the privilege of associating with so many of His most faithful and dedicated children. For that, I am most grateful. But the time has come for me to resign as a permanent deacon from active ministry in the parish, and to curtail considerably my ministry as a chaplain at East Jefferson General Hospital due mostly to age related health problems that limit my mobility. It is times like this that compel me to think back to how this journey all began and to where it has taken me and Marilyn. My journey into the diaconate probably has its roots in my being a lector for Sunday Mass that was celebrated in Leon’s Restaurant while the church was being built. Sometime later, when I was St. Angela Merici Parish Council President, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal was granted use of our church for its weekly prayer meetings and Mass so I attended as an observer. These encounters caused me to become acutely aware of God’s love for me. This lead to a deepening of my faith in God and His church, and a relationship with Jesus that created a great desire in me to read Scripture so to love and serve God more. In the early 1970’s, the permanent diaconate in the Catholic Church was being revived and Fr. Favalora (now retired Archbishop Favalora) approached me to consider studying to become a permanent deacon. My “yes” lead to being ordained in this archdiocese’s second class of permanent deacons in 1976, twenty years into my marriage. The early years of the diaconate were quite experimental and contentious with resistance in some places within the archdiocese, but never here at St. Angela. The people of SAM have always made me feel welcomed and special. The great generosity, enthusiasm, cooperation and hospitality of our parishioners was vividly demonstrated to me during my final year of diaconate formation when as co-chair of the Vietnamese Resettlement Program, the parish volunteered to resettle a family of nine refugees. Twelve committees were formed to do things such as: find a home, furniture, furnishings, household items, and employment for them, as well as to assist them in shopping and in navigating our educational system from college to grade school. This was a very special time that taught me much about serving and ministering God’s love. Some of my fondest memories are of having baptized many babies (some of whom are parishioners today), of serving at the altar, witnessing marriages, visiting the homebound to bring the Eucharist, praying the Rosary at wake services of our beloved deceased, and ministering at funerals and burials. It was during Msgr. Crosby Kern’s tenure at St. Angela Merici that I was called to be a chaplain at East Jefferson General Hospital where I have served for 38 years, meanwhile being involved with liturgies at SAM. Serving the sick, the dying and ministering to their families, especially St. Angela Merici parishioners, has brought tremendous satisfaction to me. Although there were times of sorrow, God has always found a way to fill me with joy and much gratification serving in this capacity. I consider myself extremely blessed to have had the honor of serving the parishioners of St. Angela Merici, and many others in the wider area of East Jefferson. Regrettably, my presence on the altar has ceased, but please know that I remain available to be of service to my St. Angela family whenever possible. With love & much gratitude, Deacon Raymond Heap

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Zechariah

Thus says the LORD: Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; the warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

First Reading Zechariah 9: 9-10

LITURGY FOR THE 14TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

R. (cf. 1) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

I will extol you, O my God and King,

and I will bless your name forever and ever.

Every day will I bless you,

and I will praise your name forever and ever.

R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

The LORD is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and of great kindness.

The LORD is good to all

and compassionate toward all his works.

R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD,

and let your faithful ones bless you.

Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom

and speak of your might.

R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

The LORD is faithful in all his words

and holy in all his works.

The LORD lifts up all who are falling

and raises up all who are bowed down.

R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

SUNDAY, JULY 5, 2020

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Second Reading Romans 8: 9, 11-13

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel Reading Matthew 11:25-30

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Pro-Life Ministry Join St. Angela Pro-Life Ministry at the Abortion facility on General Pershing St. for a prayerful presence on July 9th. We will leave after 8:30 am mass. The deeper value of being outside of the abortion facility is that it is a place of such despair and hopelessness. It is a place where God is most urgently needed. Praying outside is bringing God to the facility. Sometimes that presence is enough to be a sign of hope to somebody entering the facility. Please consider joining us.

Saint of the Week SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902) Feast Day: July 6 Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Goretti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Out of compliance with the precautions regarding COVID-19, Catholic Counseling Service (CCS) continues to offer telehealth services to individuals, couples, and families through the phone or video-conferencing platforms. This new and effective method of counseling allows CCS to extend our services across the archdiocese to areas we weren’t previously available. Beginning Monday, May 18th, we will resume our face-to-face counseling at our New Orleans office; however, staff and clients are required to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all, including wearing facemasks and maintaining 6 feet apart where possible. Through the generosity of a donor, CCS has received a grant to increase the number of clients we can assist with the cost of counseling, including providing pro bono services when necessary. CCS offers counseling for $50 a session and will continue to use a sliding scale to assist anyone looking for counseling. We are committed to removing finances as an obstacle to mental health services. Anyone interested in counseling can speak to our intake coordinator by calling our main office at 504-861-6245. If we are unable to answer a call, please leave a message with their name and preferred contact phone number and someone will return their call within the next business day to complete the intake and schedule an appointment. All calls are completely confidential. We are proud to continue our mission of providing quality and affordable counseling to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
